We Interviewed Cher and It Was Everything We Hoped It Would Be

While I’m too young to remember watching Sonny and Cher in their variety show heyday, Cher was very much a part of my childhood. My dad being the serious 70s music fan that he is, her songs were played in high rotation in our house and her style evolution was clocked closely. I so clearly remember that episode of Will & Grace where the threesome is forced to wait for a 4-person table at a restaurant to accommodate Jack’s Cher doll (Cher makes a cameo too). It’s an oft-quoted moment in our house. Plus, plastic surgery and wigs aside, who wouldn’t want to turn back time and grow up to look just like her? So when the email asking if I’d like to interview Cher landed in my inbox (and after the requisite happy dance in my desk chair), I excitedly typed back YES!

Gap loves it’s icons. Alongside rapper Future, the 71 year-old mega star is starring in the Gap’s new “Meet Me in the Gap” fall campaign. In the video, the two stars (who never met before) combine their soul and rock roots for a rendition of “Everyday People.”

“I love the idea of ‘Meet Me in the Gap’ because it’s easy to have common ground if you are really open and curious to people from different cultures,” said Cher in a Gap press release. “I didn’t know who Future was before this but I knew it would be so fun to work with someone who is completely unlike me, and who is young, really talented and striving.”

Below are the best bits from our conversation about the pajamas she just can’t part with, the longest relationship she’s ever had (hint: it’s not with a human) and discovering new designers.

What’s the oldest piece from the Gap in your closet?

“I have these great gray and white polka dot pajama bottoms that I can’t give up.”

Would you consider yourself a quintessential Gap girl?

“I think because the brand has always been inclusive, we all can consider ourselves a part of the Gap community. We all remember our favorite piece that made us feel great, and that nostalgia is so cool.”

At 71, what’s your uniform?

“The thing I love about style is that it is continually evolving. I don’t believe I’ve ever had a uniform.”

What’s your relationship with denim?

“My relationship with denim started when I was six years old. And it has gone on ever since. It is the longest relationship I have ever had.”

You have such unique style, do you work with anyone or prefer to shop on your own?

“I really love both. I enjoy shopping on my own and discovering new designers, but it is also wonderful to be surprised and have great things brought to me.”
