“One of my many creative outlets is drawing on my face,” reads an Instagram caption on Samantha Tan’s feed. The description, which is followed by a list of 12 makeup products, accompanies a selfie of the professional race-car driver rocking an exaggerated inky-black cat-eye accentuated with red-meets-pink eyeshadow, glitter, faux lashes and flawless filled-in brows. It’s a total lewk, sandwiched between shots of her suited up to drive and her BMW race car.

The more than 100,000 fans who follow Tan on Instagram are sure to notice that black winged eyeliner is a signature of the car enthusiast’s, even under her helmet. For Tan, makeup is an extension of the power she feels at the wheel. “I definitely put on a full face of makeup before I go for a race,” she expresses. “It really sets the tone and makes me feel confident and badass.” And her passion for beauty doesn’t stop at makeup. “I have struggled with eczema my entire life, so I’m used to having a very specific skincare routine. At night my routine is typically four to five steps, and in the morning it’s three.”

Hearing that Tan has an extensive beauty arsenal that she always keeps close is rather refreshing, especially since she’s in a sport dominated by men and where women are often treated as marketing gimmicks rather than major competitors. “I feel like if you show any kind of femininity, people don’t take you seriously,” she says. “I want to show that you can embrace your feminine side — be whoever you are — and still be successful.”

Originally from Stouffville, Ont., Tan, who is based in Southern California, started her professional career as a solo racer when she was 16 but today routinely participates in team-endurance sprints (some lasting a full 24 hours). And at just 25 years old, she has quickly climbed the ranks in motorsport: In 2021, she not only walked away with six championship titles but also made history by becoming the first Asian woman to win a major international endurance-racing championship — the renowned 24H Dubai. “It feels so good to be the first, but I also don’t want to be the last,” she says of the milestone. “I hope to continue paving the way for other girls who want to partake in this sport.”

Her deep love of beauty products also started when she was in her teens; in the early aughts, she used to watch Michelle Phan, an OG Asian American beauty vlogger. “Growing up in a small town, I was the only Asian person in my class in high school, so I ran to YouTube to find people I could relate to,” she recounts. “Michelle Phan quickly became one of my role models, and I fell in love with makeup. She’s also a big skincare junkie.”

Hoping to continue to break barriers in her field, Tan now has her sights set on the 24 Hours Le Mans in France — the pinnacle of competitive endurance racing. “My ultimate goal is to go to Le Mans and be the first Asian woman to win that,” she says. “And if — when — I hit that milestone, it would be so monumental for not only me but young girls. My whole thing is to become the role model I never had in the industry.”

Below are the beauty essentials Samantha Tan swears by, whether she’s at home or on the race track.

We’re continuing to honour Black excellence beyond Black History Month by amplifying Black Canadian media trailblazers who are achieving incredible firsts, creating new paths and inspiring others along the way.

A graduate of Toronto’s College of Sports Media, award-winning broadcaster Kayla Grey started out as an intern for the Toronto Argonauts before venturing to Winnipeg as a beat news reporter and later Prince Rupert, British Columbia to cover local sports. Today, the 30-year-old mother of one is an anchor for SportsCentre on TSN (her 2018 debut on the network made her the first Black woman to host a flagship sports highlight show in Canada), a sideline reporter for the Toronto Raptors, and co-producer and host of The Shift, a game-changing show she launched on TSN.ca in 2021 that covers topics at the intersection of sports, life and culture. Here, Grey talks to FASHION about her show, her personal style and the importance of being your true self.

RELATED: How My Jamaican Culture Has Helped Me To Not Fear Aging

On how The Shift came to be:

“The Shift came out of frustration [with] what I was not seeing in media. I felt like there wasn’t a place that was allowing certain viewers and audiences to feel seen and heard and I was done just talking about it. So I started putting in the work by thinking about, if I were to have a show in sports that made me feel seen or heard, and that didn’t require me having to stream American ESPN to see myself represented on television, what would it look like? Once I came up with the show idea and how I wanted it to look, I eventually went into a brand partnership at TSN who helped me pitch it to Dell at the time.

A post shared by Kayla Grey (@kayla_grey)

“I created The Shift during a time when there was a lot of trauma within marginalized communities being highlighted. I wanted the show to be a place where that was spoken about and where we could hold space for the really rough and tough conversations that needed to be had. But, I also high key wanted it to be a place where it also really highlighted joy — Black joy. I thought that, as media, we weren’t doing a good job in terms of balance — talking about a community’s lack but also highlighting what a community has. The Black community already knows what it doesn’t have. I feel like there needs to be reminders of what we do — of what we have done and what we can create. Reminders of the groundwork that we have already laid and where we’re headed next. I wanted a show that really embodied all of that.”

On pushback and difficulties she faced along the way:

“There were naysayers who would comment like, ‘Oh, she’s just getting a show because she’s Black and because of the climate right now. This is the trend right now.’ There was definitely that element to it. But at some point you have to turn off the noise and do your thing and understand that I’ve put in years and years into my craft and my place in this industry. I would expect good things to happen to someone who works incredibly hard to position themselves.

“There was also [pressure of feeling] like the show had to make sense to everybody — even to people it probably would never make sense to in the first place. I faced comments like, ‘It’s not going work. It’s not going resonate.’ I think when you push something on the mainstream, you always have these thoughts in the back of your head like, how is this content digestible? How is it going to be monetized? But often, you’re gearing those types of questions towards a white audience only. I had to let go of all of that to prove that it could be done — and not only done well but received well, too.”

On overcoming biases and microagressions throughout her career:

“I remember someone had the audacity during my very first on-air experience to tell me that ‘Someone who looks like you should be lucky that you even have a job.’ And with me being a woman — a Black woman — around professional athletes, there have been people over the years (never the players themselves) who have objectified me. To them it’s like, ‘God forbid this ‘object’ actually has something to say about sports. She must be here for other reasons.’ It sometimes feels like, as a woman in this industry, you are hyper-sexualized in that sense. Also, when you start to advocate for yourself as a Black woman, some people can often take that as ‘she’s angry’ or ‘she’s defiant.’ That’s how you’re automatically described when you set boundaries for yourself. So for the longest time, as a result, I would dress a certain way and talk a certain way — hide my true light so that I could fly under the radar and not be seen as ‘other,’ because I just wanted to feel safe at work and safe in this industry. Eventually, I had to check myself because it was taking so much energy trying to be who I’m not and I knew I wouldn’t get far playing that game. I’ve discovered that the more authentic I am, the more things flow my way.”

More on being a woman in the sports space:

“It’s still a very male-dominated industry, but there are a bunch of women that have entered the game. I’m seeing sideline reporting done by predominantly women. I’m seeing more women in front office positions, in tech and also in the sports science space, which is great! But it’s been this old boys club for a very, very long time, so certain conversations have been slow moving — there are certain rules that haven’t been made, boundaries that haven’t been established. It’s one thing to have women in this space, it’s another to make us feel safe, supported and like we are allowed to have a sense of balance. Like when I got pregnant with my son, I remember not wanting to tell anyone for months, and trying to figure out how my professional and personal goals could coexist — because it felt like the groundwork had been laid for them not to be able to coexist. It’s not like anyone had told me that flat out, but it felt like there was this unwritten rule or suggestion that once you have a baby your career is done. That it’s time to find something else. That’s the assumption I had and I know it didn’t just come out of nowhere. It wasn’t a story that I was simply telling myself. So I rushed back six weeks after I gave birth because I felt like I was going to be forgotten about.”

How fashion and personal style play a critical role:

“I know I have a great personality — I love who I am — and I’m really learning to enjoy it by expressing myself more, especially through the clothes I wear. I like to play in both the masculine and feminine worlds with my style; I adore my sneakers but can easily go into a heel, and I feel good in a nice dress moment or even a tech fleece. To me, fashion gives my personality permission to show up. It helps me get into the mindset that I can be whoever I want to be on any day. I’m not saying that I adapt my personality to my clothes. It’s more that clothes allow me to adopt the concept of, ‘Kayla, you are many things and you are allowed to be many things — and those many things look pretty dope, too.’ I feel like I do my job that much better coming at it with a certain confidence because, for me, my outfits help set the tone.”

On her relationship with beauty:

“I love to play with my hair and I love a good nighttime routine: heavy face cream, eye cream — all of those things. I really believe in the practice of settling down and ‘taking off’ the day. And I love to play with makeup. I think because for so long I wasn’t getting makeup artists who knew how to properly work with my skin tone — today I work with a really good artist — I found fun in watching YouTube and Instagram videos (these days I’m all about TikTok) and learning how to do things on my own. They made me fall in love with the process of getting ready and knowing that I have the tools myself to make myself look my best.”

On the future of The Shift:

“I see The Shift becoming a completely different show, owned by a completely different network and produced by a completely different person. What I’ve created is just a starting point. I want someone else to eventually go out there and create the next Shift, but like ten times better with ten times more resources. I want The Shift to be a testament to what you can do when you put pen down to paper from your ideas and actually see them through. I hope that the show sparks others to go for it in their own ways, and not limit or cap things. I want abundance for what the show has already brought and the team and staff behind it that I’m so lucky to work alongside. Bigger, greater things ahead are what I see.”

This is Texture Talk, our long-running column that deep dives into the dynamic world of curly hair, from crowns of curls that are free flowing to strands that are tucked away in a protective style.

An incredibly empowering thing about afro-textured hair is how versatile it is. Locs — a protective hairstyle where strands of hair are twisted around themselves into permanent fused units — are heavily associated with Black identity and have rich and complex origins. From Africa to Asia to the Americas, the hairstyle has been worn continuously by people of colour from various regions around the world, dating from ancient times until now. But despite their long history, locs were only really thrust into Western culture in the 1970s thanks to the success of reggae artist Bob Marley, who wore them as a part of his connection to Rastafarianism — a religious movement born in Jamaica.

RELATED: Tyrone Edwards on the Powerful Relationship He Has With His Signature Locs

For decades, the term “dreadlocks” has been used to describe the style, but today it’s considered problematic due to its deep entanglement in colonialism and the establishment of Eurocentric beauty standards, which have caused natural hair and protective styles to be unfairly judged and policed. Thus, there’s been a push to drop “dread” altogether to create a healthier narrative.

Sure, locs continue to be symbolic of spiritual or religious beliefs for many who sport them, but for a multitude of others, the hairstyle holds different meanings. It can represent cultural or ethnic pride, a step in determining one’s own beauty ideal or making a hairstyle choice that simply feels convenient  (though it does come with its own unique maintenance routine — and yes, that means regular washing). Here, four creatives share their locs journey and the experiences they’ve encountered along the way.

I grew up admiring locs. (My dad has had them for as long as I can remember.) To me, they represent power. I started growing my own when I was around 14, and five years into my locs journey, I began dabbling with different hues — blond, blue, red and green. But grey has always been my favourite hair colour; it reminds me of wisdom. I went through a series of boxed dyes to achieve my desired grey shade, but the process was really damaging to my hair so I eventually went to a hairdresser to try faux locs. My own locs get braided; then extensions (mine are handmade in Poland) are added in using a crochet technique. I’ve spent the majority of my life trying to fit in, but now I’m all about standing out. A locs mullet (bangs at the front, long in the back, shaved sides) has been my signature look for the past three years. My hair makes me feel magical, unique and exclusively me.

My parents and my brothers all have locs. Even my aunt has beautiful locs flowing almost all the way down to her ankles. I got mine done in Trinidad and Tobago, where my family is from, and it’s been quite a few years now that I’ve been growing them out. There are unpleasant stigmas associated with locs due to a lack of knowledge and the ways people can see you. A common question I get asked is if I wash my hair. A lot of people also mistake locs for braids or continue to refer to them as “dreadlocks,” not realizing that the traditional term now has a negative connotation attached to it. People have also randomly asked me if I have weed, assuming I’m a stoner or that I sell it. There’s a larger conversation that needs to be had about how people view the hairstyle and think you’re living a certain way based on your appearance.

My locs journey started in the late ’90s with me shaving my head and going completely bald to get rid of my relaxed strands. I didn’t know any other way because there was not a lot of information available on locs, so it was a process learning about them. People would ask me why I was growing them out, commenting that I wouldn’t be able to find work. Maybe I wouldn’t have been able to get an office job — especially back then — but because I’m a makeup artist, I felt like I had creative licence to do what I wanted. Also, my image of locs was Angela Davis, an educated activist and university professor who had them at the time. Seeing her really gave me confidence and made me not worry about others’ opinions. I grew up being told that hair is a woman’s beauty, but I’ve never liked being controlled by anything. So when I shaved my head, I felt empowered knowing that my beauty was me and growing locs would only add to it. Since the ’90s, I’ve had my locs really long and short, I’ve coloured them many times and I’ve even shaved them off, grown an afro and then eventually retwisted my hair. I’ve never stuck to just one style. I just love how in control I feel with my locs.

I’ve been growing my locs for eight years. I was tired of the process of getting my hair chemically relaxed (which was often painful) every few weeks or having to get extensions redone. To me, locs felt like something that would be easier to maintain and that I could take on myself. And they’re very versatile: I’ll do updos or half-up styles and curl them or braid them. Common stereotypes I experience about my locs are people assuming I’m Rastafarian or spiritual or that I’m either vegan or vegetarian. And as a model, I’ve been on-set with hairstylists who think they can’t do much with my hair so they just leave it down.

“Life isn’t black and white; it’s gold.” If you’re a beauty history buff, then you likely know that famous tag line from the original 1999 Christian Dior J’adore fragrance advert starring Estonian supermodel Carmen Kass walking through a pool of liquid gold (actor Charlize Theron has taken over as the face since 2006).

With its signature gilded bottle inspired by the figure-eight (a nod to Christian Dior’s 1949 cyclone dress) and adorned with what looks like fine, golden jewellery around a women’s neck (derived from one of John Galliano’s Maasai-style gold chokers from fall 1997), Dior’s J’adore is arguably one of the most well known perfumes out there.

Ushering in a new era of opulence and optimism for the new millennium at the time, the initial fragrance, which was created by French master perfumer Calice Becker, was a robust, classic floral that smelt nothing like your grandma’s bedroom: think a cluster of ylang-ylang, rose and jasmine for a sensual, magnetic spritz. And even though the original juice has since been reformulated to include a number of different concentrations over the years, including different iterations of the iconic gold-wire-wrapped flacon, the allure of J’adore has never gone out of style. Now, over two decades later, the scent is disrupting perfume circles yet again with J’adore Parfum d’Eau, which dropped earlier this fall.

Photography courtesy of Dior

Made with the same feminine, floral DNA, J’adore Parfum d’Eau is an innovative water-based scent, the brainchild of Dior’s former in-house perfumer of nearly fifteen years, Francois Demachy, who officially stepped down last year.

The outcome of a Dior patented nano-emulsion technique — it is able to infuse higher-than-normal quantities of flower oil into a water base using extremely high pressure and in turn eliminates the need for any chemical solubilizers — the latest spritz is made without a trace of alcohol, leaving only the good stuff: a bouquet of magnolia, jasmine, rose and honeysuckle. (Tip: No alcohol means it also doubles as a fabulous scented hair mist without drying out tresses.) What’s more, there’s also a brand new signature floral note, bitter orange neroli flower blossoms of Vallauris, which are grown exclusively for Dior.

Over 900 kilometres south of Paris, in the hillside commune of Vallauris just outside of the seaside town of Antibes, former sales director turned flower farmer Christelle Archer tends to Florapolis, a once abandoned, 100-year-old bitter orange tree grove. “The Florapolis estate has 502 trees, including 300 that are centenary,” shares Archer. Her exclusive partnership with Dior helps to rehabilitate flower production in the region. “Unfortunately, due to land pressure, most of the orange tree farms disappeared in favor of the construction of villas, which can be menacing for our heritage.”

Photography courtesy of Dior

During harvest time in the spring, flowers are picked by hand with the help of seasonal workers. “Over a period of four weeks, we pick each flower. They are then grouped in sheets to be brought on the sorting table in order to remove any leaves or other vegetation that could alter the quality of the neroli oil,” Archer explains. The neroli oil itself is then obtained via a steam distillation. “This a profession that requires a precise savoir faire. I transport the flowers every day to a distillery so they can be processed the same day. This way, we preserve the optimal quality of fresh flowers.”

Housed in a reimagined white opalescent bottle, J’adore Parfum d’Eau ($195) feels incredibly easy to wear, and is a delight to spritz on: the spray experience has even been elevated to a cocooning mist that just hits different than other perfumes.

So if you’re still looking for a last-minute gift or simply want a new signature scent to help you ring in the New Year, we highly recommend this one. There will be zero regifting here, trust.

Whether it be from colouring and heat styling, frequent brushing or exposure to extreme weather, our hair undergoes a lot of stress. Biolage’s Strength Recovery line takes a strategic approach to hair repair, with proven ingredients that target weak, fragile strands. The range, which is suitable for all hair types and includes shampoo, conditioner, a deep-treatment mask and a leave-in spray, is infused with vegan squalane to replenish and protect the inner core of the hair. Plant emollients also nourish and smooth the outer fibre of the hair for increased softness and shine.

Rodan + Fields ventures into haircare

After 15 years of developing results-driven, multiple-step skincare regimens, Rodan+Fields, the skincare brand founded by San Francisco-based dermatologists Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields, has expanded into an entirely new beauty category: haircare. Taking a scalp-first approach via skincare-inspired ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid — the goal is to maintain the scalp moisture barrier — the new haircare collection consists of two three-step lines (think shampoo, conditioner and treatment) to choose from. There’s the Volume+ regimen to help repair fine hair and boost its thickness, and Smooth+ for ample hydration, defrizzing and shine. In addition, you’ll find two stylers: the Refresh+ Dry Shampoo and the Define+ Curl Cream.

Radford and Toronto illustrator Lauren Pearson collaborate for an at-home LED mask

Once restricted to the four walls of an aesthetician’s treatment room, light therapy devices have fully broken into the mainstream of at-home masking. This limited-edition LED mask from Canadian beauty brand Radford is FDA-approved and equipped with four different light settings so you can target different concerns simultaneously. Red light diminishes inflammation and pigmentation, blue targets excess oil and infrared increases moisture levels, while a mixed light kills off bacteria. The flexible mask, designed to make you feel comfortable while you wear it for each of the 10- to 15-minute treatments, also features striking line drawings from Toronto illustrator Lauren Pearson.

Available in one signature shade, Ref Rose, the warm-toned rosy liquid is a hybrid between Saie’s fan-favourite Glowy Super Gel and Dew Blush. What’s more, the collaboration was developed to coordinate with Reformation’s holiday collection of silky pieces in a similar rose-gold palette.

Inspired by the practice of hair co-washing, U Beauty’s brand new The Mantle Skin Conditioning Wash is an oil-balm formula that promises to be your one-step solution for removing water- and oil-soluble debris, including waterproof makeup, SPF, and pollutants without stripping the skin of its acid mantle. Our acid mantle is an invisible natural shield on the surface of the skin composed of lipids. Its main job is to keep the good stuff (like moisture) in, and the bad stuff (like bacteria and pollution) out. The secret sauce is U Beauty’s double patent-pending Flora-Siren Capsule Technology, a pH-regulating encapsulation of vitamins, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid that ensures a deep cleanse while leaving the skin ultra conditioned. According to founder Tina Craig, the product has replaced her own triple-cleansing routine.

A good facial cleanser should be the backbone of any skincare routine. If your pores aren’t totally clean, other products just won’t work as well and you’ll be prone to breakouts. All-natural Canadian skincare brand Consonant’s latest formula, Makeup Removing Cleansing Oil, turns into a cleansing milk when emulsified with water and harnesses the power of jojoba and sunflower oils as well as plant-derived squalane to thoroughly dissolve and wash away sunscreen, stubborn waterproof makeup and excess sebum. And the best part is that it doesn’t leave any oily residue and can be used on all skin types — yes, even acne-prone ones.

Charlotte Tilbury drops stunning eyeshadow singles

Palettes are great if you’re looking for multiple shades in one place, but oftentimes eyeshadow singles just can’t be beat (like when you want to experiment with only one new shade or finish, you need a compact essential to fit in your clutch for on-the-go touch-ups or a single wash of colour on your lids is simply more your makeup vibe). Whatever your reasoning, Charlotte Tilbury’s Hypnotising Pop Shot eyeshadows are sure to pack a punch. Available in seven highly pigmented shades, this formula comes in two different finishes: sparkle and chrome.

The fragrance profile includes notes of bergamot, geranium, vetiver, vanilla and frankincense and is meant to create a space that makes you want to linger. Ask any dermatologist what ingredients you should add into your routine and, without fail, they’ll list the holy trifecta: retinol, sunscreen and vitamin C. There are two big benefits of vitamin C; it acts as an antioxidant to protect your skin against environmental damage and it’s a brightener, so it makes uneven skin look more radiant. With the new Naturally Serious C Your Glow Vitamin C Radiance Oil, you get highly potent 2 per cent THD Ascorbate Vitamin C along with botanicals and extracts that smooth fine lines and soothe irritation. It’s the perfect choice for anyone with sensitive skin who finds other vitamin C products too irritating.

“Typically when people ask me to do something that I have no relationship to, I’m always more interested in it,” says Adam Driver over Zoom. The Star Wars and House Of Gucci actor is talking about starring in Burberry’s campaign for its fragrance, Hero, a woody-meets-spicy eau de toilette with bergamot, pepper, juniper and cedar that launched last year. “Being the face of a fragrance is never something I had plans to be involved with, especially since scent has never been part of my routine.” The ad, which sees the actor strip down and swim with a horse to FKA Twigs’ “Two Weeks,” captured the attention of the Internet upon its release. It cemented, once again, the Academy Award nominee’s position (and hotness, let’s be real) as a multi-talented leading man.

A post shared by Burberry (@burberry)

Earlier this fall, when Burberry dropped a more intense version of the spritz, Hero Eau de Parfum (think notes of pine needles, incense and cedar), FASHION had the opportunity to chat with Driver, who’s currently on location in Italy. Between filming scenes for a big-budget biopic of racing mogul Enzo Ferrari (the first images of the upcoming film just surfaced this week), he spoke about his idols and how he gets into character. He also delved into his passion project, Arts in the Armed Forces, a non-profit bringing arts programming to the U.S. military community around the globe, free of charge. Interesting fact: Driver was a former Marine himself before going off to study theatre at Juilliard.

His first fragrance memory:

Burberry Hero Eau De Parfum, $115 (50 ml). Photography courtesy of Burberry

“I have a memory of Brut when I was, like, four. I don’t even know if that’s still around! I also have memories of my mom gifting me a bottle of Stetson cologne for Christmas and I would just keep getting the same bottle of Stetson.”

His heroes:

“I don’t have a singular hero. There have been many people throughout different times in my life. More recently, I would say the parents of the Uvalde, Texas school shooting. To lose your kid and get up the next day is a heroic act. That requires a will that I think is really impressive.”

His favourite city:

New York. It has an energy and a pulse that, even if you’re indoors, you can feel.”

On getting into character:

Photography courtesy of Burberry

“Sometimes you don’t find your character until you’re already a week into shooting. Sometimes it happens in your first costume fitting or you can read a script and right away you understand who your character is and what you want to do with them. It really depends. Clothes, which physically tell a character’s story, play a huge part — especially shoes. Shoes to me represent how someone chooses to move around in the world.”

On Arts in the Armed Forces:

A post shared by Arts in the Armed Forces (@aitaf)

“The idea was to bring the power of live theatre to an audience that’s been told that they won’t understand a play or that that theatre is not for them. Service members are regular people who just have this crazy job. Less than 1 per cent of the United States is in the military, so the disconnect between our military community and the civilian community is the biggest it’s ever been in history. People really don’t know what others are doing. Civilians look at the military as these, like, Neanderthals who just follow orders and don’t question anything. But they’re really these incredible people who like to be artistically fed and inspired, just like anybody else. That’s basically what we do.

“We go to bases and first train with troops, whether that be going up in Blackhawks with them or watching their water training or attack dog training. Then after they watch us read a play and we have a conversation about it. We also do film screenings. Military bases reach out to us all the time and we have a $10,000 grant for a screenwriting and playwriting award for any military or veteran to write a play about anything that’s been going on in the world. Arts in the Armed Forces is exposing troops to a new way of expressing themselves, similar to what I went through after leaving the Marine Corps and going to Juilliard. I was able to articulate feelings that I had while in the Marine Corps through plays that had nothing to do with the military.

“This isn’t a new idea, it’s an ancient one: In ancient Greek theatre, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides were elected generals and playwrights who wrote plays for an audience of people who were in the military. We’re kind of doing a modern-day version of that.”

ICYMI: Earlier this month, Guerlain dropped a stunning new colour collection of velvet-metal longwear lispticks (Rouge G) and rose oil–laced eyeshadow quads (Ombres G). The colourful assortment was steered by French makeup-artist-turned-beauty-entrepreneur Violette Serrat, who joined the luxury beauty brand last year following sought-after gigs at Dior and Estée Lauder. She also heads her own beauty line, Violette FR, a tightly edited mix of skincare and makeup essentials inspired by French beauty culture. Below, the beauty insider shares her inspiration for the new Guerlain products, her favourite techniques and more.

Tells us about the creative concept behind the new fall makeup collection.

I’m constantly blown away by nature. I can never get used to it. I’m always visiting botanical gardens, taking pictures and getting inspired by things like flowers. And for a long time, I have wanted to do something around moths. We usually picture this brown fluttering insect that’s boring and dusty, but trust me, its wings can resemble an haute couture dress. Moth wings can have black and white prints, dots of reds — it’s absolutely mind blowing.

For this collection, I first started looking into moths and eventually butterflies and really dug into the different species. And what really wowed with me with butterflies is that they are unapologetic with their fabulousness; their wings come in all of these incredible colours as if they are wearing a dress. At the same time, they’re very vulnerable insects. So there’s almost this paradox between strength, power, extreme fragility and vulnerability, which really reminds me of women in a way. As women, I think it’s a strength to be in touch with our vulnerability. So I wanted to explore all of that through colour.

The hues and finishes are quite something. How did you decide on them?

When I studied butterfly wings very closely, I noticed that they have this coating of metallic-like pigments. It’s like a little dust of metal pigment that’s there to help absorb and reflect light — which is why butterfly wings are so vibrant to the eye. I wanted to recreate that same effect for the Rouge G lipsticks, so I worked really hard with the Guerlain lab to try and replicate that same sheen, which was quite difficult and meticulous. It almost felt like haute couture work with all the research and back and forth. And for the lipstick case, I wanted to highlight the butterfly wings as an art piece by zooming in on it.

What about for the eyeshadows?

I took my inspo a bit further and decided to have each one celebrate a different aspect of nature: butterflies, the richness of peacock feathers, the jungle, roses. Within each palette you have gorgeous and unexpected topper shades and are encouraged to play. For example, with Mystic Peacock, I like mixing the blue shade with a bit of water and applying it halfway up my eyelid to my middle crease. I’ll then use the green as a topper by patting it over the blue and all the way to my upper lid. This creates like an ombre effect and a sheer veil of sparkle. It’s quite magical.

Do you have a go-to technique for applying lipstick?

There are two things I do all the time. First, I really like to moisturize the lips by over-applying lip balm. I’ll then remove the excess before applying the lipstick. Then, I’ll overdraw the lips a bit by applying colour just beyond their natural curve. Cheating your own volume a bit, which naturally diminishes with age, really provides this plumpness.

Guerlain also dropped its new Parure Gold Skin Matte Foundation at the same time as this colour collection. What’s a foundation hack you love doing?

One thing I like to do is not apply foundation on the nose. So I’ll apply it lightly everywhere else, but keep the nose bare. This, to me, creates the illusion that you’re not wearing foundation. But, with this technique, you can’t do heavy things like bake your makeup or contour because then you will really see the difference and the effect is lost.

What’s a signature makeup look of yours?

Bright lipstick, very matte, very intense. That’s definitely my personal go-to.

Do you have a favourite skincare product you like to use under makeup?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Violette (@violette_fr)

My Violette FR Boum-Boum Milk. I’ll use it as a prepping mist before makeup but also at the end of a look because the birch sap in the formula gives your complexion this, like, tiny topcoat of shine and it leaves your skin feeling really great. It also helps to lock in other products.

What role does makeup play in your own life?

I don’t care about trends. To me, beauty is very personal and makeup should be used as a mood lifter. I think you should wake up in the morning and ask yourself, ‘How do I feel today? How can makeup support that feeling or push that feeling?’ If you’re feeling a little fragile and you have a big meeting that day, maybe wearing a red lipstick will make you feel powerful and provide protection. Or, if you’re feeling very inspired and you want to really tap into that, maybe you’ll go for metallic eyeshadow.

Makeup should never be used to ‘better’ who you already are. It should be about celebrating yourself. I always say to people: When you’re cleaning your teeth in the morning, putting on your skincare and brushing your hair, please believe that you are a god or goddess and really feel it. Your beauty routine then becomes this amazing tool for your mental health, instead of something you use to ‘fix’ yourself.

A new annual fashion and beauty awards gala has officially hit Canada and it’s here to showcase Black creatives and Black-owned businesses across the country. The event also has a huge focus on mentoring future talent through bursary programs and workshops.

On Saturday night, the Black Fashion & Beauty Gala took place at Toronto’s Grand Luxe Event Boutique. With a dress code of “The Phoenix Rises from the Ashes,” a drove of individuals showed up in bold ensembles. The brain child of Toronto-based fashion and event stylist Ann-Marie Daniel Barker, the event honoured 11 winners across different categories. (The nominees were earlier submitted and voted on by the public.)

The night started out with a red carpet photo op followed by trays of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the lobby where guests were free to mingle and network. Next, was a seated three-course dinner in the ballroom where attendees were entertained with a live performance by singer Jay Harmony, plus DJ Randee playing on the sound system. Read on for our favourite moments from the Black Fashion & Beauty Gala.

Stacey McKenzie delivered an empowering speech

Jamaican-born Canadian model, runway coach, motivational speaker and television personality Stacey McKenzie was honoured with a special BFBG Trailblazer and Lifetime Achievement award for her barrier-breaking career. Dancing on stage to “Ordinary Servant” by Vybz Kartel, McKenzie lip sang and grooved at the awards podium for a good 30 seconds, encouraging the crowd to listen to the powerful lyrics.

Then came her acceptance speech: “Listening to people say that I couldn’t do certain things based on how I looked and sounded really took its toll on me, and there were times I was going to give up and walk away. But I felt it within my spirit that I belonged in fashion. We all go through ups and downs and ugliness in life, but it’s what we take from [those experiences] and what we do with them,” she said. “Don’t give up on yourselves. Love yourself. Own yourself. Embrace yourself. Don’t let anyone make you feel less than who you are. Don’t make anyone make you feel like you can’t do something because of the colour of your skin. You are worthy. We are worthy.”

She ended by commending founder Ann-Marie. “I’ve been in the industry for 25 years, and I’ve never come across an event like this celebrating Black people — my people — within fashion and beauty. It’s important for us as a community to really work together and that is what you’re doing here, Ann-Marie. This event that you’re putting on, honouring and showcasing talent within the Black community, is really important and phenomenal. Drop this event every year. Even when it’s hard and you feel like giving up — don’t.”

Tynomi Banks nailed her presenting duties

For her on-stage moment to present the Model of the Year award, drag performer and Canada’s Drag Race Season 1 contestant Tynomi Banks was full of wit and charisma, which had the entire house laughing. “Yes, I killed it [on Drag Race]. Got voted off real early, but booked myself a Super Bowl ad right away. Booked and blessed!” she said, letting out a full-barrelled laugh. Then came her announcement of the award winner: “And the winner is Honey Benjamin. I am going to accept this award on her behalf because I look like an award. Oh, no wait, she’s here,” she said, kissing her teeth. The crowd was even treated to some voguing later on in the night.

Cloré Beauty Supply CEO Clara Jina Kim got super emotional during her speech

Cloré Beauty Supply, a major sponsor of the BFBG Awards, is a go-to beauty supply chain across Ontario for Black beauty products. (It’s well-known within the community for its stock of textured hair products, hair extensions, wigs and more.) When the CEO of the family-run business, Clara Jina Kim, graced the stage, it became apparent that she was overwhelmed by the significance of the evening. It prompted BFBG founder Ann-Marie Daniel Barker to stand by Kim’s side during the deliverance of her remarks.

“This is the first time [we as a company] have been able to come and speak to the community we serve,” said Kim. “Our vision is to grow the community that we are part of — to make this a franchise for the Black community. Our goal is to support those who support us with jobs, sponsorships and donations. Thank you for the opportunity to share our vision with all of you.”

It may be presumptuous to think you can free two birds with one key, but we’re betting high on this one.

Facial fanatics, rejoice. The Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial is finally available in Canada. The at-home mask gently exfoliates the skin’s pore lining, sloughing away dead skin cells and harnessing a smoother skin texture. And because it was formulated with an ideal pH of 3.5, the pro-quality AHA/BHA blend will serve your skin a youthful-looking radiance, as if you were in the hands of a facialist.

If you’re blessed with natural waves, curls or coils, it’s important to know that top-notch definition begins once you step into the shower—not when you get out—and that the products you select dictate how well your hair will hold up throughout the week. We know that mastering a wash-and-go can take a lot of trial and error, so we’ve consulted two Canadian curly-hair specialists to help you craft a washing routine. Read on for their top tips, from techniques to product recommendations.

Deep cleanse

The key to a ridiculously good wash-and-go? Start with a clarifying shampoo to create a totally clean foundation stripped of all buildup. “I always emphasize clarifying because it strips the hair of any product, oils, debris or dead skin cells—things that could affect the scalp and hair and lead to excessive dryness and breakage,” says Maegan Berment, founder of and chief stylist at Crowned Melanin Beauty in Winnipeg. “Once you have clarified and removed any buildup, your hair is now ready to accept moisture back into it,” adds Shelly Guerin, owner of Honey Curly Hair Studio in Calgary, who recommends a clarifier free of stripping detergents (a.k.a. sulfates). And take your time. “Give your scalp some love and attention,” advises Guerin. “You shouldn’t just be doing a two-minute scrub and then not washing it again for a while.” As for frequency, using a clarifying shampoo every seven to 10 days or every two weeks is a pro-recommended rule of thumb—it just depends on lifestyle. “Someone who is constantly layering products should clarify once a week,” says Berment, adding that you can always follow up with a moisturizing shampoo if you are worried that the process will leave your hair too parched. And if you want to do a gentler cleanse in between the deeper ones, perhaps due to working out or having looser waves and curls that tend to get weighed down quickly, a moisturizing shampoo or cleansing conditioner will be your friend.

Kirrikin SS23 / Imaxtree

Condition and detangle

One important thing to remember is that curl definition loves hydration and hydration starts with water. “We forget that water is moisture,” says Guerin. “It’s definitely the most important ingredient that we should be factoring in.” This means making sure that your hair is sopping wet when you’re applying the next step: a deep conditioner. “This helps the conditioner travel through the hair cuticles, which will result in less tension when it comes to detangling,” adds Berment. “Water also helps you avoid overusing product.” Once your hair is coated with conditioner, diligent detangling can begin. “I alternate between using my hands and a Denman brush or wide-toothed comb,” says Berment, who sections clients’ hair with clips during the process, especially those with thick locks. “I’ll go in with my fingers and pull apart any single-strand knots.” Once hair is knot-free (note: detangling to the roots will aid in elongating your curls), let your deep conditioner sit for a bit to help hair retain as much moisture as possible before rinsing it thoroughly. Afterwards, it’s time for a leave-in. “A leave-in conditioner seals in all the moisture from your conditioning and detangling and also keeps hair soft for styling,” notes Berment.

Style

Depending on your curl pattern, your mileage from curl-defining products and techniques may vary, meaning there may be more steps needed. Both hairstylists recommend a water-based gel layered over your leave-in conditioner for amplifying springy curls and coils (“Tighter curls tend to have more moisture needs, and gels retain the most,” says Guerin) and a lightweight volumizing foam or mousse for looser curl patterns, which are prone to being weighed down. Again, don’t underestimate the importance of water: “Work in small sections, and rake your product through super-wet hair with either your fingers or a hair tool, like a Denman brush,” says Berment. (Tip: Keep your stylers in your shower so you can easily add more water as you go.) If your hair is especially dry or you live in a dry climate, Berment suggests taking the extra step of adding an oil-based topper (particularly if you have thick, tighter textures). For example, a moisturizing curl cream will help stop water from evaporating. And on the subject of tightly wound hair: It can sometimes clump together and seem undefined, which means a regular finger-raking process might not cut it. Other tried-and-true techniques? Shingling (applying a curl product through each curl to separate and smooth), finger coiling (twirling small sections of hair with a curl definer using your fingers) and two-strand twists (separating mini sections of product-coated hair into two pieces and wrapping them around each other as tightly as possible; hair is unravelled once it’s fully dry). Time-consuming, yes. But the results are beyond.

Casablanca SS23 / Imaxtree

Dry

Guerin and Berment recommend using a hood dryer. The dome-shaped tool’s controlled heat reduces overall drying time and won’t blow hair around, allowing defined curls to set very quickly for a polished final look. There are many compact, portable options on the market, but if that’s not feasible, simply air-drying or using a diffuser attachment will do the job. And don’t touch. “Let your hair completely dry so you don’t disturb the curl pattern—you’ll get more longevity,” says Berment.

Gary Bigeni SS23 / Imaxtree

Extend

A good wash-and-go can take some time, so it’s helpful to know how to make your style last until the next washday comes around. Wearing a silk or satin bonnet at night will protect your mane from frizz-inducing friction while you sleep. It also helps retain moisture in the hair, notes Guerin. If your curls look a bit crushed come morning, reach for a fine-mist spray bottle filled with water or water mixed with a light conditioner for a quick refresh. (Berment personally loves cocktailing water and hydrating rosewater.) “Don’t oversaturate the hair,” she advises. “Just dampen it enough to make it flexible again.”

Reset, moisturize and style

This curated list of hair products and tools will help you master your next wash-‘n’-go.

When you’re selecting a go-to foundation for everyday use, there’s one characteristic that should be non-negotiable: long-lasting. Because what’s the point of gushing over a makeup base that’s only going to fade, cake or crease by midday? Infused with hydrating hyaluronic acid and skin-smoothing mandelic acid, Lancôme’s new 30-shade Teint Idole Ultra Wear Care & Glow Foundation is a dependable radiance-boosting option that promises all-day medium coverage that won’t settle into pores or fine lines.

Tatcha has officially stepped into body care

In Japan, going for a meditative stroll in the woods is known as shinrin-yoku (which translates to “forest bathing”) and has been enthusiastically popularized since the 1980s. According to studies, immersing ourselves in nature is excellent for boosting ailing mental health and our immune systems. The eco-therapy practice has not been lost on Japanese-inspired skincare brand Tatcha, which has set out to harness the power of forest bathing with its latest skincare line, Hinoki. Featuring an aroma of cedar and cypress essential oils, the collection consists of a gentle exfoliating body wash, a milky body lotion and a fast-absorbing body oil, all of which will leave you feeling calm and relaxed, with supremely moisturized skin.

Announced as the official beauty sponsor of the new season of RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race, which is already in full swing and features actors Jenna Ushkowitz and Loretta Devine, the set of the show will be fully stocked with the best of the brand. Picture rows on rows (and the full ranges) of Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, Gloss Bomb and Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Colour to name a few. As mother Rih likes to say: “Makeup is there for you to have fun with. It should never feel like pressure. It should never feel like a uniform. Feel free to take chances, and take risks, and dare to do something new or different.”

Starting with the Boost Vitamin C Pro serum, its high-quality formula of Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), hyaluronic acid, Vitamin E and of course the miracle molecule, Vitamin C, targets anti-aging concerns while brightening and evening out the skin tone. For those looking to tackle fine lines and signs of aging, the brand’s latest Boost Retinol serum will play the part. With a cocktail of 0.3 per cent pure retinol, bukachiol, biopeptides and shea butter, your skin will appear firmer and smoother and pores will be nearly invisible.

With each fragile twist and turn, curly hair should be met with a hairstylist educated in the workings of textured hair who just gets it — curls, coils, kinks and all. Continuing our Canada-wide search for some of the country’s best curly hair salons (first came Toronto then Montreal), we’re taking this next roundup to the West Coast: Vancouver.

Home to breathtaking sea views and mountainous landscapes, this city also has expert stylists and salons for natural hair necessities. Scroll on to explore Vancouver’s curl scene (and check back for new additions).

Alara Hair Solutions

At Alara Hair Solutions, tick all your hair boxes from braiding and hair extension services to curl-strengthening treatments. If that weren’t enough, founder and celebrity stylist Clara Amaguru’s star-studded resume (including Vivica A. Fox and Jason Momoa) is sure to impress. “As more movie productions moved up to ‘Hollywood North’ [Vancouver], the demand increased for stylists that could especially work with [Black hair],” says Amaguru about her career journey into the film industry after opening her salon in 2003. In addition to being a film set regular, Amaguru is also an artistic educator and ambassador for Design Essentials, one of the leading multicultural hair product lines in North America.

Ammerose

Ammerose Hair Salon is where multi-talented stylists take a multicultural approach to styling. In the heart of downtown Vancouver, Ammerose offers over 20 salon services including braiding, beading, wash and styles and chemical treatments for all textures, putting inclusion at the forefront of its work. On its multicultural message: “It allows us to work with diverse styles and creates an opportunity for the fusion of new styles,” says a salon representative.

Axis Salon

A post shared by Dawn (@vancityhairgirl)

Axis Salon is home to in-demand curly cut connoisseur Dawn Archer. “My decision to focus on curly textured hair is rooted in a desire to create a safe space for people like me that have salon horror stories and haven’t been encouraged to love and accept how their hair grows naturally,” says Archer. On her signature cutting method, she adds: “I would say that my technique is more organic as I adapt to how the hair wants to move.” Archer also hosts a workshop called “Unapologetically Curly” on how to create a safe space for textured curly hair clients.

Her Royal Hair

Her Royal Hair is a salon-meets-store where wigs and hair extensions are the main attraction. You can shop top quality human hair wigs and extensions at affordable prices both in-store and online, and, in the studio, the “celebrity style wig installation” is Her Royal Hair’s most sought after hair extension service. “The service includes customizing a human hair wig to the clients desired look and applying the wig to fit the clients needs. The undetectable lace material used helps to give the installation a flawless scalp-like look — the wig literally looks like it’s growing from the client’s scalp,” says a salon representative. “Wig installations can last anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on the client’s skin type and after care.”

Kokopelli

For your next colouring service, visit Kokopelli Salon’s resident colour and curly cut specialist Lala Santos. Though colouring curls can be daunting, rest assured Santos carries out her colouring treatments with care. “In order to colour curls hair without damage, there first needs to be a consultation where I will learn about a client’s hair journey and, if necessary, do a strand test to see how their hair will react to be sure the colour won’t disrupt their curls,” she says. Santos is also the creator of the signature “Lala cut” for which she uses a dry-cutting technique to accurately shape curls.

The Texture Workshops

Not a brick-and-motor salon per se, but this next one is definitely worth noting — especially for hair professionals. Hairstylists can benefit from a visit from The Texture Workshops team to master natural hair education. Founded by celebrity stylist Alicia Chowen, the team consists of two main educators: Michelle St Hill (natural hair specialist) and Mary Kiarie (braiding and wig application specialist). “Our two-day intro workshop includes history — because you need to know our story before touching our hair — product and curl knowledge, a lace-front wig application demo, braiding techniques and hands-on work with models,” says Chowen. Completing approximately thirty workshops to date, this accomplished group hosts public workshops and private in-salon bookings. Though based in Vancouver, classes are offered Canada-wide.

The Toronto Caribbean Carnival is back in full force this weekend after two years of pandemic-related cancellations, and Shea Moisture, a popular haircare brand among those with curly and coily hair, is joining in on the important cultural celebration with a four day pop-up (the brand’s second Toronto Caribbean Carnival-themed event to date). Taking over the city’s downtown Stackt Market until Monday, August 1st, the Shea Carnival experience features complimentary hairstyling services provided by local black owned and operated salons and barber shops (shout-out to JouJou Hair Studio, The Curl Lounge, Hair By Glenna and Big House Barber Studios), as well as community talent including musicians, artists, media personalities, community leaders, speakers and local vendors.

Herbivore Botanicals releases an eye cream

For those making strides to shop all-natural and plant-based, vegan skin and body care line Herbivore Botanicals has a new eye treatment worth noting. Dubbed Moon Dew, the creamy a.m. and p.m. formula is powered by bakuchiol extract — a non-irritating plant-based retinol alternative — as well as botanical peptides to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time with zero irritation.

Shoppers Drug Mart’s in-house cosmetics brand, Quo Beauty, recently dropped its Big Planet, Big Love collection in collaboration with Oceanworks, a platform that strives to help brands measure their plastic footprint and find sustainable alternatives. Featuring close to 30 vegan and cruelty-free beauty products and accessories (think colour cosmetics, hair and makeup accessories, nail colour and jewellery), forward-thinking packaging is the focus here: Within you’ll find Oceanworks reclaimed ocean-bound plastic in the eye and face palettes, reusable accessories such as swabs and cleansing pads, and the use of bio-sourced materials from renewable vegetal sources in the brand’s plant-based nail colour range.

Meet e.l.f. Cosmetics viral Halo Glow Liquid Filter

If you haven’t heard about it all over the internet yet, drugstore beauty brand e.l.f. Cosmetics dropped its Halo Glow Liquid Filter earlier this month, and, according to TikTok fans and beauty gurus, it’s a dupe for the iconic Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter — at less than half the price. Available in eight shades, the multi-use, skincare-meets-makeup hybrid is infused with squalane and hyaluronic acid to help both smooth and brighten the skin for a radiant soft-focus look. Don’t think of it as a foundation — it’s more of a complexion booster, meaning you can wear it alone or under makeup, add it to your foundation or even use it like a highlighter. You can find it in-store at Shopper’s Drug Mart and also online at shoppersdrugmart.ca (as of this week).

Benefit Cosmetics drops a new brow pencil

The world of curls is vast; kinks, coils, cuts and braids barely scratch the surface of natural hair possibilities. Mindful of the lack of natural hair education and styling capabilities in the beauty industry, curl-informed stylists across Canada have been filling the gap with specialized salons catered to textured haircare and styling. After launching our countrywide search for some of Canada’s best curly hair salons in Toronto, next on our list is charming Montreal.

Here, cobblestone streets lined with historic monuments host a well rounded posse of stylists and salons equipped for your natural hair needs. As we continue to research the best curly hair salons in Montreal, check back for future updates and new additions below.

Artizans 4/22

For the earth conscious curly client, consider booking your next appointment at eco-boutique and salon, Artizans 4/22. The eco-friendly ethos that drives this salon manifests in the selection of products used on and sold to clients. As part of Green Circle Salons — the beauty industry’s first sustainable salon solution designed to combat beauty waste and climate change — salon waste from hair clippings to product bottles at Artizans 4/22 are recycled, recovered and repurposed. Need a chic cut? A fresh set of faux locs perhaps? Pamper yourself comfortably and consciously here.

Aura Beauté

Collectively trained in Vidal Sassoon, Toni and Guy, Deva Curl, Rezo Cut and Cut it Kinky methods, Aura Beauté co-founders Cyan Caruso-Comas and Sherrie Virtue are the curl cut experts to book. Equality and inclusivity are highly valued at this spot — with gender neutral pricing offered to clients. “We’re tired of the pink tax that many women are familiar with,” say the stylists on equal-length haircuts taking the same amount of time regardless of gender. “We recognize that many people don’t fall into traditional gender binaries, and we want to create a space for all people to feel comfortable.”

Inhairitance

Known locally as a ‘curl spa’, Inhairitance founder Abisara Machold says that the focus of the salon is on the “health and celebration of curly hair textures.” After receiving a complimentary consultation to discover your ‘curl ID’, Inhairitance then offers a diverse selection of curly services from restorative treatments to vibrant curl colouring. Implementing no compromises on toxic ingredients, Inhairitance carries its own self-titled products and 14 other black and female owned natural hair brands. Aiming to spread natural hair knowledge that has been lost throughout history, in-house classes are also offered to hairdressers in practice. “The word ‘Inhairitance’ is not for nothing because it really connects you with your ancestry, your background and your pride where maybe you’ve felt shame before,” Machold tells FASHION.

Melissandre Coiffure Inc

With an emphasis on African braiding techniques from twists to crochet braids, Melissandre Coiffure salon owner Melissandre Nsoumb delivers aesthetically pleasing results while considering hair health. “It takes a lot of time to take care of natural Afro hair, so braiding it requires an extra touch in order to not only allow it to grow properly but to protect it as well,” she says. “This goes a long way to reduce how much time my clients would normally have to engage in protecting their hair from breaking and getting dirty.” Nsoumb also offers specialized braiding classes at all levels.

Salon Académie Nancy Falaise

Inclusive of each unique curl pattern from loose waves to tighter coils, Salon Académie Nancy Falaise covers all the bases. Though tangible updates on a Quebec-based curly hair education petition launched by founder Nancy Falaise in 2020 are still pending, Falaise does offer her own occasional curl workshops teaching clients curl etiquette from wash to finish. Inspired by her own haircare journey post-breast cancer treatment, Falaise also tells FASHION that the salon now offers ‘PRP’ (Platelet-Rich Plasma), a regenerative hair treatment performed with a doctor to promote hair growth.

The textured-hair experience is multitudinous. No two heads of curls are the same, and the ways in which they are styled, or can be styled, are infinite. From braiding to balayage, the art of catering to curly hair is intricate and should be handled with care. Naturally then, we find ourselves seeking out hair salons well-versed in the dynamic needs and wants of curly-headed clients. Commencing our search for Canada’s best curly hair salons, we begin with the multicultural homebase of FASHION: Toronto.

Whether you’re looking to colour your curls or lengthen them with extensions, read on to discover some of the best curly hair salons in Toronto that understand the workings of textured hair.

Crown N’ Glory

Photography courtesy of Crown N’ Glory

Specializing in natural hair needs, Crown N’ Glory is Toronto’s Midtown go-to. The salon is run by mother daughter duo, Aisha and Anesia Loobie, whose own expertise in afro-textured hair not only lends itself to the salon’s curly-haired clients, but to the establishment’s curl classes, too. “We offer a variety of classes to haircare professionals of all levels. These classes give in depth training on cutting curly hair, basic braiding techniques, product knowledge and creating a flawless silk press,” says Aisha. Be they curious clients or parents struggling with curly-haired kiddies — come one, come all.

Curl Bar

If you’re in search of a curly cut, an appointment at the Curl Bar for a ‘Deva Cut’ is worth booking. Owner of the salon, Trudie Mulalu, ensures that what you see is what you get with this patented dry-cutting practice. “By cutting the hair dry, in its natural state, stylists are able to cut the curls where they live naturally, and thereby creating a beautiful shape. The stylist sees how each curl will fall and each individual curl is shaped according to where it lives.”

Hill Studio

Catering to a variety of curly hair inquiries from cuts to colours, Hill Studio one of our favourite Toronto salons that offers everything you need and a little more. Trained under the wing of leading stylists from New York to Paris, founder Allison Hill brings her worldly styling experience back to Toronto. Hill has since gone on to double the salon as a wellness space for the Black community, developing yoga, breath, mindfulness and anti-Black racism initiatives delivered by Black trauma-informed movement specialists, counsellors and therapists. “There is more than just hair going on here. It’s where creativity and healing meet,” says Hill.

Jazma Hair

Photography Courtesy of Jazma Hair

Though we’ve witnessed the meteoric rise of the natural hair movement, there is no shame in the relaxing game when done professionally. Created by salon founder Asha McLeod, Jazma Hair offers a signature Wash & Wear relaxing procedure that’s not your average. “Wash and wear relaxer is the technique and process of working with your hair’s natural texture to achieve more softness, versatility and manageability. The curl releasing agent defines and enhances its natural beauty,” a salon representative says. While they reveal the demand for traditional relaxers have decreased, this texture release treatment has become the desired alternative for those seeking a looser curl pattern. Black Hair Care MasterClasses, an education program developed by Jazma, are also offered to professional hairstylists here.

JouJou Hair

Share stylists with the stars, from Tracy Moore and Marci Ien to Sasha Exeter and Keshia Chanté, at local celebrity hair hotspot, JouJou Hair Studio. Owned by L’Oréal Paris Canada hair expert Janet Jackson, this hair parlour is glowing with accolades, including ByBlacks People’s Choice Awards – Best Beauty Salon and the Black Canadian Awards – Best Beauty Destination. Welcoming each new client with a thorough hair consultation, JouJou Hair Studio prioritizes haircare first — and then their diverse-talent team perfects hairstyles from braids to colour transformations to silk presses.

SheBeenHair

If you’ve ever admired etalk co-anchor Tyrone Edwards’ signature locs, then you’d be admiring the work of Nakisha Straker, owner and lead stylist at SheBeenHair Studio. Since styling Edwards, Straker has seen an influx of male clients including pop-R&B singer Miguel and rapper Waka Flocka Flame. However, Straker’s expertise is not limited to locs. “I pride myself to be a master in textures, as I cater to a clientele of all ethnicities, creeds and races,” she says of her impressive ability to tackle many different styles, colours and cuts.

Kuhl.er Bar

At the Kuhl.er Bar, flawless wig installations and top quality extensions are the main attraction. “Wigs and extensions are an excellent option for our clients to switch up their look without causing damage to their natural hair,” shares the salon. Owner and lead stylist Cree Barrocks creates custom hair colours, while wig specialist Jae R seamlessly blends wig hairlines with every skin tone, and braids and extension specialist Patricia Lee formulates personalized install methods to suit each client’s hairline and density.

Urban Curls Boutique

Though colouring curls can be daunting, the team at UrbanCurls boutique is well equipped to colour all curls and coils. Here, stylists use a “curl colour fusion” technique, expert Keina Morgan tells us. “This is a form of using highlights and balayage to create a highlight and lowlight effect that helps to give amazing blending in super coily textures.” For lasting strength, the process is sealed with luxurious Olaplex and colour lock treatments. The best part: each client receives a take-home guide noting products used during the service, best future practices and curated product recommendations.

worldSALON

Since opening its doors to Toronto in 1989, worldSALON has been heralded as one of the city’s most sustainably-focused salon stops. “Beauty without the toxic hangover” is what they preach and practice. As recipients of the first Environmental Stewardship Award – Green Circle Salons in 2010 and the Green Champion Award – Environmental Defence in 2015, it came as no surprise when founder and hairstylist Brian Phillips told FASHION that the salon uses solar panels to heat its hot water. Sustainable haircuts and healthy hair colouring are most in demand here, and you can be rest assured that every service (including loc installation and maintenance) is completed with only the cleanest products on the market. This Green Circle-certified salon also doubles as the flagship for green beauty line WORLD Hair Skin.

Ziba Style Bar

Modern aesthetics and fresh design elements welcome guests to Ziba Style Bar. With a focus on “inclusivity over niche,” stylists are versed in all hair textures and reflect the multicultural diversity of Toronto, says Founder Solange Ashoori. Since Ashoori launched an Ontario petition in 2020 to mandate textured hair education in beauty schools, she tells FASHION it has received over 11,000 signatures with more to come on the movement. “It’s clear the demand is there,” she says. Though the ministry hasn’t been responsive, Ashoori says she has had help from local politicians, organizations and businesses.

Zoma Beauty Salon

Zoma Beauty Salon owner Elizabhet Kiffle and her go-to assistant Ester both boast expertise in all types of curls, and are well-versed in doing an array of textured hairstyles, from sleek blow-outs to locs. But the salon’s true specialty is braids, and, on any given day, you can spot both men and women sitting in the shop getting their hair washed and plaited. “I grew up in braids,” expresses Elizabhet, going on to explain that in her home country of Ethiopia, plaits play a heavily ingrained role in the culture. Just turn to the striking portraits and artwork dotted all over the colourful salon and you’ll come to learn about the significance different braided hairstyles hold in various Ethiopian tribes and groups.

And be sure to check out our Montreal and Vancouver curly hair salon guides.

Canadian lipstick junkies, rejoice: Beauty gurus on TikTok have been obsessed with YSL Beauty’s latest tech-smart custom lipstick device, Rouge Sur Mesure, since this winter, and now the patented technology is officially available in Canada. If you haven’t seen it on social media yet, the Bluetooth-enabled, handheld device carries a set of three cartridges, which are available in four colour families — pink, orange, red and nude — and when activated, colour (in the brand’s signature velvet cream matte finish) flows from each one into the top portion of the device to create your desired lip shade — up to a whopping 4,000 to be exact.

Calibrated through the Rouge Sur Mesure phone app, users can choose from three different methods to pick a lipstick on the app. There’s the “shade palette” setting, which opens your phone’s front-facing camera to display a colour wheel that can be virtually tried, and the “shade match” setting that allows you to point to a random colour using your back camera to create an exact or similar lipstick. Alternatively, the third setting, “shade stylist,” allows you to upload a photo of your outfit and pick a matching lip shade. Bonus: The top portion of the device is a compact of sorts that can be removed and stashed away in your makeup bag or purse for on-the-go touch ups!

In a culture that puts a high premium on beauty — and by “beauty,” we mean “youth” (let’s be real) — Tai Salih is a torchbearer for ripping up the rule book. Box braids, which she gets re-braided with extensions every five weeks, have been the Toronto-based yoga instructor’s signature hairstyle for more than five years, and when her natural grey hairs began to sprout, she wasn’t about to give it up.

Instead of beginning the exhausting regimen of reaching for dye, Salih chose to accentuate her silvery strands by weaving grey-coloured braiding hair into her extra-long plaits. “I don’t know why society is so adamant about pushing us toward this Peter Pan syndrome where we have to stay young to be relevant,” she says. “When I looked at myself in the mirror and saw those first few strands of grey, I was just proud that I had lived long enough to see grey hair. I come from a place where not a lot of people live to see that — where it’s a privilege to get wrinkles. Grey is wisdom. I wanted to lean into that.”

When Salih was just five years old, her family fled persecution in Sudan, a country torn apart by civil war. Their odyssey took them through multiple countries until they were able to find asylum in Canada. Salih was 11. “I don’t think there’s been a time since I left when it’s been stable enough — safe enough — to spend a prolonged period of time back home; there’s just always been one thing or another going on,” says the 36-year-old.

Far from her homeland, Salih decided to seize the opportunity to build a new life on her own terms. “When I came to Canada, there was a sense of having found a place where I could start creating something for myself,” she says. “Where I could flourish and grow and start saying no to things—things that were acceptable in previous generations.” Things like child marriage, Salih reveals.

As the eldest of five children, Salih prioritized pursuing an education. “I wanted something more for my siblings,” she explains. “Doing the work — getting myself educated — meant a lot to me because I knew it would trickle down to them and show them another way.”

Salih was also determined to address her poor mental health, caused by post-migration trauma. “I have complex PTSD, and I wanted to find joy,” she says. “I opened myself up to a lot of different avenues — therapy, the gym — to look for healing.” But it wasn’t until she tried yoga that the restorative gates were flung wide open. “At the end of my first class — in that final shavasana pose — the peace and quiet I experienced was unlike anything I’d ever felt before,” she shares. “That moment provided relief from the baggage I had been carrying and the pain I had refused to let myself shed.”

Hooked on yoga’s freeing powers, Salih became inspired to pursue teacher training, a venture that would completely shatter her shell. “It wasn’t until my first yoga training that I actually let go and cried heavy tears; I met some of my suppressed emotions for the first time,” she reveals. “I remember my legs getting weak and collapsing — it was the best cry of my life.”

Salih’s deep passion for yoga inspired her to not only become a studio director at BIPOC-owned Modo Yoga in Scarborough, Ont., and a Lululemon ambassador but also found her own non-profit, Red Ma’at (pronounced “Muh-aht”; the name is rooted in Salih’s Egyptian and Sudanese background) Collective. Using a trauma-informed lens to help guide practices that offer a safe, healing environment, Salih’s organization provides free community classes to marginalized women of colour, with a focus on Black and Indigenous bodies. “When it comes to Black and Indigenous women, we share so much when it comes to being unseen, unheard and forgotten,” she declares.

Through outreach to women’s shelters and community centres across the Greater Toronto Area, Salih invites women 16 years and older to register for her classes at a studio inside Lululemon’s Queen Street West store. The goal is to give women access to a beautiful space where they can truly connect. “While the movement is very profound and powerful, the ‘seeing’ and ‘hearing’ is just as important,” she says. “As a Black woman, I’m tired of having to diminish myself to fit into what society deems worthy. My hairstyle is very loud and obvious. I accept every grey strand, and I’m making it louder. My hair is my crown.”

As an industry polymath — award-winning fashion and beauty editor and broadcast journalist, co-founder of the wildly popular beauty brand Milk Makeup and brand ambassador for payment platform Afterpay — as well as a mother of eight-year-old twins, Zanna Roberts Rassi is the ultimate multi-tasking wonder.

In fact, her busy schedule is what first birthed the idea for Milk Makeup, a line of vegan, gender-blending makeup and skincare staples, back in 2016. “There are four co-founders, and when we launched, we had five kids under the age of two between all of us, so the brand was created with multifunction and speed in mind. Something clean that you don’t mind your kids picking up in the bathroom while you’re all trying to get ready at the same time. Something you can use in a cab on the way to somewhere,” explains the 40-year-old British-born, New York-based entrepreneur. “Minimal effort, maximum impact has always been my theme in life.”

Ahead, we spoke to Zanna Roberts Rassi about her beauty routine, personal style, favourite Spring/Summer 2022 trends and loads more.

Her go-to skincare routine

“I’m pretty low maintenance. In the morning before I jump into the shower I’ll use a face mask while I’m brushing my teeth or pouring the kids’ their cereal. The girls find it hilarious because I always look like a witch at breakfast. I wash if off in the shower and then, as soon as I’m out, I apply my moisturizer on damp, warm skin. That’s my big thing. If my skin is too cold or dry, then it’s too late — I have to wash my face again. I use the Vegan Milk Moisturizer morning and night. In the evening, I like to use our Ungrip Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm to cleanse my skin. If my skin is in need of some extra help, I will use Sunday Riley’s Good Genes Treatment. I’m a big fan of it.”

Her favourite hair hack

“My platinum blonde is serious maintenance, there’s no doubt about it. I’ve tried just about every single hair mask in the business, but nothing is quite as regenerative as raw, natural coconut oil. I will literally sit with just coconut oil on my hair once a week for two hours. I first use a cleansing shampoo then I’ll apply my coconut oil. Sure, my hair is greasy for, like, four days afterwards, but it honestly stops breakage. I like to warm it up in the microwave and then brush it through my hair. If you go to bed with it on, cover your pillows!”

Her personal style uniform

“I love an outfit with a little bit of masculine in it — a little bit tomboy. For me, that usually means something oversized. This season that manifested into the oversized blazer with a skinny legging, or a menswear-inspired high-waisted pant paired with a tighter knit top. There’s something about pairing an oversized silhouette with something more form fitting that that makes me feel confident.”

Her favourite item in her closet

“I have this Monse Letterman jacket that says NYC on the back and that has big, oversized baseball cuffs. It’s super obnoxious but I just love it! I wear it over anything, from jeans to even over a mini dress feels cool.”

Her everyday makeup routine

“I always apply Milk Makeup’s Sunshine Skin Tint with my fingers because the heat from my hands makes the product soak in really well. Then I will apply the Rise mascara and quick flick of the Kush eyebrow gel. For night, I’ll pump my look up with my Tom Ford quad eyeshadow palette — it’s the easiest thing to use for instant glamour — and a Victoria Beckham kajal eyeliner.”

Her genuis beauty tip

“I’m into this ’90s supermodel-esque vibe: lip liner, but not applied all the way around the lips. Instead of lining the whole way around before lipstick, you only apply it around your cupid’s bow and under the lower lip, not on the sides. It just gives you this super, duper full lip. Victoria Beckham told me about it.”

Her most coveted fashion trend

“Colour! From being at fashion shows to all over award show red carpets — even just walking around the streets of New York — I see people really embracing colour more than ever. Serotonin dressing, or dopamine dressing, is trending big time and it’s definitely manifesting into these saturated colours. On the Oscars red carpet for example, H.E.R wore a gorgeous green Carolina Herrera dress that was crazy bright. I think after we’ve all endured being locked down, in the ‘cozy mode’ of hoodies, sweatpants and nice neutrals, now it’s time to celebrate with some wearable optimism.”

Her favourite beauty trend

“It’s all about clean, easy, beautiful skin — no more of the heavy contour, thankfully — but with experimentation and play through accents of makeup: eyeshadow in the inner corner of the eye, a high blush, dual-tone shadow that’s tight lined, graphic eyeliner.”

Her go-to skin treatment:

Laura Dyer. She is a clinical skincare specialist in New York and a godsend. A lot of people in the beauty industry go and see her. She does her signature AquaGold treatment on me, which includes a cocktail of vitamins and hyaluronic acids that she stamps into the skin — like a form of microneedling. It’s one of those pleasure-pain things. It’s incredible!”

Her take on aging

“The idea of aging used to scare me. But I think now, at my age, I feel more and more together than I ever have. There’s something so great about getting older and more mature: becoming more finely tuned at everything in your life, from kids to career to friends. I’m excited about it even more now because I think life is just going to get better and better. It’s funny, when it comes to style, I’ve got a folder on Instagram of really chic older women in their fifties and sixties that dress really cool. I’m like, ‘This is my goal!” I want to look like them, dress as cool as they are and have a short haircut with spiky, white-blonde hair. And I’ll still wear oversized clothes and big combat boots. I think aging is all about doing it gracefully and doing it with class.”

Flashback to the 2012 Oscars red carpet: Viola Davis, who was up for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Aibileen Clark in 2011’s The Help, stunned in a flowing long emerald-green Vera Wang gown and matching oversized earrings. But her vibrant ensemble was far from the main attention-grabber that night. After years of donning an array of wigs on red carpets, the veteran actress had decided to ditch her hairpieces for the prestigious ceremony and unveil her natural hair for the very first time. For Davis, embracing her afro that evening was more than just a style choice. The decision was freeing and became a teachable moment that gave a huge audience a crash course on the ever-complicated politics of Black beauty in the face of Eurocentric standards.

“It’s been projected in culture that the Black woman isn’t pretty, and we carry that mentality as Black women,” she says. “By that point, I was exhausted. Every time I was on a red carpet, it felt like a strange mixture of my belonging on a red carpet because I was dressed appropriately and my trying to be myself — and I could never find the balance. When I took the wig off, I found the balance.”

Davis’s coils would go on to turn heads again during an episode of the freshman season of her hit ABC show How to Get Away With Murder. While preparing for bed, the high-powered attorney Annalise Keating played by Viola Davis, removed her makeup and her wig, revealing a compressed head of curly hair that had been tucked up underneath. The powerful scene instantly went viral — it was a standout moment that showcased the behind-closed-doors beauty preparation process of so many Black women to the rest of the world.

But for the Oscar-, Emmy- and Tony-winning performer and L’Oreal Paris ambassador, her most pivotal Hollywood hair moment came with her 2018 film Widows, a lead role she performed while wearing her natural afro for the entire movie. The hair experience, which came at the suggestion of director Steve McQueen, helped break down long-standing hang-ups Davis had within an industry where Black women’s beauty onscreen has often been measured by the looseness of their curl patterns and, as a result, highly textured hair has rarely been given the airtime it deserves.

“Whenever you get a role as an actress, your hair is the number one thing that you feel can transform you into a character, but I never felt like my own hair was an option,” says Davis. “There’s something about connecting natural hair that’s kinky to ‘what’s not beautiful’—and not only to what’s not beautiful but that natural hair isn’t even in the conversation of beauty. My big thing now is that at least I can see my hair as an option.”

Whether it be on red carpets (like the 2022 Cannes Film Festival) or on the big screen, Davis’s public hair evolution has been neck and neck with her long road to self-acceptance, she says. It’s a journey that found the 56-year-old trying to erase her natural beauty when she was younger: “from my lips to my nose to putting a lot of products in my hair to straighten it, which totally destroyed it,” she recalls.

Davis’s current makeup choices also reflect that inner growth. “The makeup that makes me feel the most empowered is the makeup that enhances what I already have; especially as I get older, I want myself to be the palette,” she shares, adding that red lipstick holds a special status in her kit. “I spent so much of my younger years feeling like my lips were too big,” she recounts. “Then, one day, I loved my lips, and now I want to show them off. That’s what red does: I feel like my lips enter the room before I do, and I love that!”

It might be fashion’s biggest night of the year, but that doesn’t mean beauty takes a backseat on the Met Gala red carpet. And Monday night’s “gilded glamour” theme saw many celebs up the fashion ante even further with their chosen beauty looks.

The 2022 Met Gala brought together the biggest names in the entertainment, fashion and beauty industries, and A-list attendees wore their most avant-garde ensembles, resulting in red carpet buzz surrounding the parade of experimental garments. But this year proved that hair, makeup and nails are part of the overall package.

After all, it was during the Gilded Age that cosmetics became more accessible thanks to the industrial revolution. And while the era’s penchant for soft hues translated to rosy cheeks on the 2022 Met Gala red carpet, many celebrities took a more modern approach to beauty with colourful lids, dewy skin and, yes, bleached eyebrows.

We’ve rounded up the most memorable beauty moments from the 2022 Met Gala in the gallery below.

A little definitely goes a long way here.

Speaking of double cleansing: The Korean-born method of starting with a remove-it-all oil followed by a deeper water-based cleanser is a skincare habit we’re 100 per cent here for, especially when it comes to breaking down and lifting away stubborn makeup, SPF and sebum at the end of the day. Lotus Aroma’s all-natural Complete Oil Cleanser contains a cocktail of safflower, castor and grapefruit oils that gently and efficiently remove pore-clogging debris while leaving skin feel impossibly soft and pampered post-rinse. Bonus: The antioxidant-rich formula also fortifies lashes.

The blendable formula is packed with antioxidant and fatty acid-rich avocado oil and skin-nourishing orange peel wax and shea butter. Glow on, friends, glow on.

What’s better than a sleek blowout? Being able to give yourself one with just one tool. Amika’s multi-tasking Double Agent 2-in-1 Blow Dryer + Straightening Brush understood the assignment. This hybrid tool has three settings to help you customize your look on a whim. You can use the blow dryer setting to dry damp hair or retouch your blowout, the blow dryer and straightening brush combo to dry slightly damp hair while simultaneously straightening, and the thermal setting to straighten or touch up already dried locks.

Vacation SPF 30 Classic Spray

We can’t speak of warmer weather and outdoor plans without the number-one beauty rule: wear sunscreen. Regardless of your skin tone or type, a generous application of an SPF of at least 30 should be an essential everyday step to keep your skin protected against short- and long-term sun damage like dark spots, fine lines, melasma, loss of elasticity — the list goes on. For those not keen on rubbing in creamy, white lotions all over and waiting for them to absorb, a spray format that can be applied in seconds without creating a mess is just the ticket. Our pick? Vacation’s new Classic SPF 30 Spray. The spritz is a fast-absorbing, airy version of the brand’s signature lotion, and the coconut oil, banana extract, aloe vera and vitamin E-infused formula smells like you’ve been to paradise and back.
