Last summer, we couldn’t seem to escape the shimmering lure of Hailey Bieber‘s glazed donut nails. And just shy of one year later, there’s a new chrome nail craze on the rise that is just as sweet. Enter vanilla chrome nails, the creamy metallic manicure making us melt.

Not to be confused with the original glazed donut look, this new iteration of last year’s trend features a more off-white, vanilla-coloured undertone — hence, the name of the look — paired with a classic chrome top coat that gives off a pearlescent finish. By combining a neutral base with a pearly element of high shine, the result is a look that reads subtle yet glamorous. Call it a cross between quiet luxury and mermaidcore, if you will.

Racking up nearly 100,000 likes on Instagram, it was nail artist Alexandra Teleki (a.k.a The Hot Blend) who posted the save-worthy snapshot of her vanilla chrome manicure back in March that has served as the main source of inspiration for the trend ever since. “This is a chrome twist, it is so subtle and beautiful!” comments one user beneath the viral post. “Omg I am obsessed,” writes a fellow nail tech. With her vanilla chrome look in high demand and over 500,000 curious followers on TikTok and Instagram to answer to, Teleki revealed her creative process on both platforms in a step-by-step tutorial right in time for spring and summer. The best part? You can recreate the look yourself at home — and it only requires a few simple steps.

As seen in her viral TikTok (which has accumulated over six million on the app so far), Teleki begins by painting each nail with a coat of The GelBottle’s Love Letter polish to create a creamy vanilla-coloured base. To lock it in, she then swipes a layer of Extreme Shine Top Coat on top of the off-white polish. As for the pearlescent pièce de résistance, each nail is then buffed with a white pearl chrome powder to create that shimmery, reflective finish. Lastly, she cleans up the look by brushing away any excess powder surrounding the nails, and reveals a fresh spring-ready vanilla chrome mani. It’s as simple as that!

Loving the look of this manicure trend? Keep scrolling for more pearly inspiration — including two new ways to further simplify your at-home chrome manis that’ll change your nail game forever.

Try a French vanilla

If you’re already into the vanilla trend, might we suggest a vanilla Française? And why not save yourself some time by going the press-on route? These French Glaze press-ons by Canadian beauty brand Quickies are gorgeous, easy to apply, and right on trend.

Go for a pink pearl mani

Strawberry chrome nails, anyone? Try opting for a layer of translucent pink polish over your cream shade before adding your chrome powder to create a soft pink pearl look that is subtle yet chic.

Get the look with a glaze pen

Using this convenient Glazing Powder Pen by Salon Perfect, all you’ll need is a single swipe of the gel polish included on one side of the pen followed by a buff of chrome powder on the other to achieve the chrome look overtop bare nails or coloured polish.

Try soft spring shades

Giving in to pastels for spring? As you should! Elevate the classic chrome look with a multicoloured pattern by swapping out the neutral base shade with any combination of your favourite springy pastels. Baby blue, candy floss pink, sweet lilac — the choice is yours.

Make it abstract

If you’re feeling experimental, follow Teleki’s lead and take the classic vanilla chrome manicure to new heights with this abstract design on a few accent nails for a little extra fun.

As the internet continues to be enamoured with Sofia Richie‘s wedding, new details are emerging daily about the luxurious, South of France-situated soirée. And since FASHION detailed all the products used to create Richie’s bridal glam earlier this week, there’s been an update on the beauty front regarding the bride’s wedding day nails. Thanks to a TikTok posted by Richie’s nuptial nail artiste, we’ve got the low-down on how to recreate the Sofia Richie wedding nails and all the products you’ll need to do so.

While celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff was behind Richie’s timeless glam and hairstylist to the stars Kathleen Hair was responsible for her bridal bun, London-based manicurist Georgia Rae was the talented manicurist on nail duty. As a self-titled “minimal nail artist,” Rae’s expertise lent itself fittingly to Richie’s soft glamour wedding aesthetic.

This week, everyone from wedding guests to members of Richie’s glam squad have offered up a unique behind-the-scenes insight into the happenings of the Richie Grainge wedding, by way of elaborate beauty breakdowns and entertaining GRWM segments on TikTok. Posting the details of Richie’s rehearsal dinner and nuptial nails on the app, Rae is the latest to reveal her creative process — following other key wedding players like Dubroff and celebrity tan artist Isabel Alysa.

For both events, Rae prepped Richie’s nails using Navy Professional tools to create a clean, flawless base for the polishes to come. She then opted for a soft square shape (which she shares is Richie’s signature) to match the elegant mood of the wedding weekend. For the bride’s rehearsal dinner nails, Rae used a single coat of OPI’s beloved Funny Bunny polish to create a milky white manicure. “I decided to do one coat because it kind of allowed Sofia’s natural skin tone to come through and almost created a custom shade for her — which I loved,” shares Rae in her TikTok post. As for the big day, two coats of Bio Sculpture’s Sweet Candy Breath polish brought Richie’s official wedding manicure together for a look that whispers “quiet luxury gone bridal.”

To ensure that Richie’s hands were moisturized throughout the weekend (because, let’s be real, all eyes were on her and her ring), Rae sealed in each manicure with Chanel skincare for an extra layer of nourishment that wouldn’t leave behind an oily or greasy finish. I mean, what could be more luxurious than topping off your wedding mani with a little Chanel?

Along with blooming flowers, brighter days, and bluer skies, spring welcomes a high dose of candy-coloured inspiration by way of fresh fashion and beauty trends. Within the celebrity beauty circuit, spring-ready manicures are following suit.

RELATED: Why Not Try Alien Nails?

From Hailey Bieber‘s glow-in-the-dark green talons to Kourtney Kardashian’s cherry-speckled set, consider vibrant colour palettes and dainty floral nail designs your sign that spring has officially sprung. Below, we’ve got all the inspiration you need for your next appointment this season, cosigned by your favourite stars. Plus, we’re breaking down how pro manicurists like Zola Ganzorigt and Britney Tokyo achieved these looks, and how you can too.

Hailey Bieber’s glow-in-the-dark green set

As the pioneer of last year’s glazed donut manicure trend, we’re always curious about what Hailey Bieber will do next with her nails. Her most recent set? These neon green almond tips with 3D chrome detailing. On Instagram, Bieber’s nail tech Zola Ganzorigt revealed they cycled through 50 different shades of polish before landing on this custom glow-in-the-dark colour for a day of festival fun at Coachella. To achieve this slime green shade, Ganzorigt mixed OPI GelColor’s No Faux Yellow and Green Come True polishes with a base coat and a sprinkle of glow-in-the-dark powder. For the gold details, she then drew lines with OPI’s Suzi’s Slinging Mezcal gel polish before curing. She finished the look by rubbing the brand’s Chrome Effects Powder in the Gold Digger shade over each of the gold lines. Turns out these neon nails accessorized the Rhode founder’s pared-back festival attire perfectly.

Jennifer Lopez’s floral decal nails

Groundbreaking or not, we love to adorn ourselves and our nails with floral patterns for spring — much to the dismay of The Devil Wears Prada antagonist Miranda Priestly — but we just can’t seem to help it. Especially when celebrities like Jennifer Lopez debut dreamy flower-bedecked sets like this one crafted by Tom Bachik, inspiring us to do the same. Bachik labels Lopez “spring queen” in his Instagram caption, and we can totally see why. What says spring more than these blossoming tips? To replicate her milk bath manicure, search through Amazon, Etsy, or your local beauty supply store to find a pack of miniature dried flower nail decals to your taste. Then, use a neutral shade of nude-pink polish as your base colour, and apply the flowers overtop. Lock it all in with a layer of top coat, and you’ve got yourself a J.Lo-inspired spring set.

Selena Gomez’s rainbow Skittles set

’Tis the season of candy-coloured palettes, and this snapshot of Selena Gomez posted by her go-to manicurist (also the aforementioned Bachik) earlier this month is right on trend. With this multi-coloured Skittles-inspired set, we can practically “taste the rainbow” through our screens. There’s some speculation from fans in Bachik’s comments over whether or not this photo may be a throwback to her “999” music video nails or a brand-new mani, but either way, the post comes at the perfect time for the spring season. If you’re indecisive when it comes to planning your manicures, these rainbow nails are your answer. All you’ll need is five bold shades of polish (or 10 if you really want that mix-and-match look) for each finger on one hand, then repeat the pattern on your other hand to get Gomez’s look. Sweet, right?

Gwen Stefani’s spring-bling talons

A post shared by eri ishizu (@eriishizu)

The maximalist version of J. Lo’s milk bath floral mani? This flower power set by celebrity nail artist Eri Ishizu on Gwen Stefani. Above, observe a mega-sized French manicure dotted with rhinestone flowers on XXL square tips that are so Stefani’s style (check her Instagram feed for lots of nail action if you don’t believe us). In Ishizu’s post, she shared that she used Aprés Nail’s Chaun Legend Square XX Long nails to achieve this ultra-long length. As for polish, she used the brand’s Fairy Wings shade as a base and Kunzite Light for the French tips. To recreate the rhinestone flowers yourself, any itty-bitty craft store bought gems can be used and placed on the nails in a flower formation — just use Ishizu’s photo as your guide.

Kourtney Kardashian’s mini cherry mani

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kim Truong (@kimkimnails)

Kourtney Kardashian’s micro cherry mani is spring-ready and oh-so-cute. This intricate set was hand-painted by A-list manicurist Kim Truong — who has also been responsible for some of sisters Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner’s best nail looks over the years. It can be tricky to replicate such small details at home without the help of a pro, so try sending screenshots of Kourt’s cherry mani to your nail tech ahead of your next appointment to avoid the at-home hassle. Or, if you prefer taking more of a DIY approach to your nails, browse Etsy to find fruit-pattern nail art stickers perfectly suited for this set. Cherries? Lemons? Strawberries? The possibilities are endless.

Georgia May Jagger’s blue chrome claws

Thought chrome nails were passé? Think again. This spring, prepare to see more colourful takes on the chrome nail trend — like these mermaid blue chrome claws that Georgia May Jagger wore last weekend. L.A.-based artist Britney Tokyo, who is known for her boldly coloured, OTT manicures on celebrities from Paris Hilton to Christina Aguilera, is the manicurist behind Jagger’s aqua tips. To take an already cool blue chrome set to the next level like Georgia, apply rhinestone hearts courtesy of a craft store at the centre of each nail. Posing with this festival-approved set for her 1.3 million followers on Instagram, it’s clear that model Georgia May (daughter of Mick Jagger and supermodel Jerry Hall) inherited her parents’ cool charm.

Transparency is trendy in society these days — and on our nails, too. Allow us to explain.

Though intricate floral designs and sweet pastel polishes capture the blooming essence of spring, there is a new nail trend in demand this season that has nothing to do with the polish painted onto them but rather, the lack thereof. Meet alien nails, the avant-garde see-through manicure that is anything but boring.

RELATED: Press-On Nails Are the Easiest Way to Change Up Your Manicure

Coined by celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik (who is also the brain behind the lip gloss nails trend), becoming a “nailien” through your futuristic mani involves a cosmic base of barely-there chrome polish and a set of acrylic nail extensions overtop to form transparent tips. The result is a mesmerizing manicure with a futuristic feel that’s minimalist, yet experimental. Bachik’s muse for the look? Anne Hathaway, who debuted this super fly set in attendance at Versace’s Fall 2023 show in Los Angeles last week.

Joining Hathaway in the see-through manicure movement is Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer, who accessorized her viral 2023 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party ensemble with an extraterrestrial set of clear nails, featuring gel bubble accents on each finger that can be spotted upon close inspection. Schafer’s other-worldly mani was crafted by Soji Nails, whose long-time signature is a surreal set of sculptural translucent nails. Once you become an admirer of her artistry, her work is hard to miss — and you may recognize it on the fingertips of stars like Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, and Christina Aguilera in editorial campaigns.

If you can’t decide on a colour at your next nail appointment, why not try a “nailien” mani instead? Or, at least begin with its glassy base and go from there? Though Bachik’s method has a particular look, there are many ways to approach a translucent manicure — if you’re up for the trend. Below, we’ve rounded up five interpretations of the clear nail trend for you to share with your manicurist at your next appointment.

Rhinestone shine

If you’re a French manicure devotee, might we suggest you give this spin on the classic a go? After double lining the tip of your natural nail, complete the look with these gel bubble accents like Schafer’s.

Go dark

Add these glassy mosaic tips to the top of a dark manicure for a satisfying contrast of dark and light that feels super interstellar. And don’t worry about wearing black during the spring, the Spring 2023 runways proved that goth beauty is still on trend.

Bubble bling

If you’re a manicure minimalist who has attempted to expand your polish palette with vibrant shades and elaborate designs, you likely know the feeling of nail regret all too well. Two steps out of the salon door and you’re already plotting your return, wishing you’d gone with one of your beloved nude shades. Feeling seen by this sentiment? We think Jennifer Lopez’s lipgloss nails were made for you.

Now, don’t be fooled by the rocks that she’s got, J.Lo loves a minimal mani (see: “rich girl” nails). And when she teams up with her trusty manicurist Tom Bachik for a new set, we know it’s bound to make headlines. This dream duo is the latest to contribute to the lipgloss nail trend that broke out on TikTok, with an elevated twist that is totally on brand for the JLo Beauty founder (she’s a Leo, btw). “You’re not fully dressed until you sparkle,” says Bachik on Instagram of the sparkly iteration of the manicure he dreamed up for the singer. Though our eyes are drawn to the silver glitter lining, we know minimalists can appreciate the ultra-glossy base of Lopez’s nails that give this trend its name.

Mimicking the high-shine finish of freshly applied lipgloss, this manicure results in sheer nails that accentuate your skin tone and boast some serious shine. With their polished yet subtle appeal, lipgloss nails will make you feel done up without doing too much. They’re a manicure made in minimalist heaven.

If you’re looking to recreate, J.Lo’s lipgloss nails, here’s how Bachik broke it down in an Instagram post for his 500,000 followers. As all the best nail artists do, he began by prepping the nails with a meticulous manicure, which covers all the bases from clipping to filing. He then applied a set of medium stiletto shaped Gel X nail tips topped with a custom mixed coat of semi-sheer nude polish to compliment J.Lo’s skin tone. For a little extra oomph, Bachik finished up with a reflective gel polish along the tips to create an ultra-thin silver lining.

Although lipgloss nails appear similar to Hailey Bieber’s glazed donut nails from 2022, there is one defining difference between them. Where Bieber’s nails are glazed with pearlescent, chrome-like pigments, the lipgloss nail trend is all about maintaining a sleek and glossy finish. So consider these trends sisters — not twins.

The beauty of a lipgloss manicure is that it can exist as just that — a no-fuss, subdued nude with a high-gloss surface that will never tire. Yet, it is those minimalist qualities that also make it a flattering base worthy of elevation. You can draw inspiration from Lopez and opt for a flashy French tip, or add a dainty design to an accent nail to up the ante, as seen above. Or, perhaps an additional coat of gold-flecked glitter polish is more to your taste? The creative touches you can add to your lipgloss nails are infinite. And even in its most natural state, this manicure will still make a chic statement.

Whether you’re a true minimalist or looking to expand your horizons *just* a little bit, make lipgloss nails your next nail set. Tap through some of our favourites nude nail polishes below.

The ultimate accessory to a shiny gold trophy (or flute of Champagne) is a perfectly polished manicure. Case in point? The bejewelled Golden Globes celeb nails we spotted on the award show’s 2023 red carpet.

As the stars stepped out in Beverly Hills for an evening of glamour at the 80th edition of the Golden Globes, the Swarovski crystal-encrusted nails worn by Selena Gomez and diamond-flecked polish spotted on Margot Robbie captured the essence of Hollywood reunited in all its lavish glory.

Below, we’re rounding up five of the iciest manicures of the night and how celebrity nail artists from Tom Bachik to Betina Goldstein achieved the maximum-bling manis. Plus, we’ve gathered the polishes, tools, and maintenance necessities (with recommendations straight from the red carpet!) to use if you’re looking to if you’re looking to create your own Golden Globes-inspired manicure at home.

Selena Gomez’s Swarovski-embellished claws

The artiste behind Gomez’s crystal-embellished Golden Globes mani is none other than A-list manicurist Tom Bachik, her go-to for campaigns and red carpets over the years. Bachik labeled this look “Mabel’s mani” — a nod to Gomez’s character in Only Murder in the Building, for which she received a nomination last night in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series category. “We wanted to use a softer shade with a bit of sparkle to contrast the deep dark drama of her @maisonvalentino gown 🖤,” he shared in an Instagram caption. Further revealing his creative process, Bachik wrote that he began by using stiletto-shaped Gel-X nail tips topped with two coats of a pinky-nude polish for a neutral base. As for the pièce de résistance (the bling, of course), a luxe mixture of fine glitter and Swarovski pixie dust was placed overtop for extra sparkle and dimension.

Anya Taylor-Joy’s gold chrome talons

Photography by Getty Images

Golden Globe-nominated actress Anya Taylor-Joy has us feeling some kind of way about chrome manicures with her electric gold-meets-green set of almond-shaped nails that pop against her canary yellow Dior co-ord. Last year, we marvelled at Hailey Bieber’s subtle glazed donut nails with their neutral approach to chrome, but in 2023 this manicure finisher may be due for a vibrantly pigmented makeover. And Taylor-Joy is clearly pioneering the movement. What would the Golden Globes be without a little gilded glamour, right?

Margot Robbie’s subtle metallic pink manicure

Hiya, Barbie! We know Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie film isn’t set to hit theatres until summer 2023, but Margot Robbie is either still in character or well-prepared for future press tour looks with this subdued glitter manicure that oozes Barbie girl energy. Painted by Bachik, this “soft but deliberate” set was created with an Essie base coat over manicured nails and a single coat of what he labels a “rich girl shade” — Essie’s sheer pale pink Hi Maintenance polish, in this case. For that sparkling finish, Bachik applied a thin even layer of FX Expressie polish in the shade Holo, a pearly top coat infused with a diamond-like glitter flecks. “This gave our nails just the right amount of sparkle to mimicking the sequins in the dress,” he shared in the caption of his post.

Quinta Brunson’s custom ombre press-ons

Photography by Getty Images

On Quinta Brunson’s blinged-out press-on mani, celebrity nail artist Temeka Jackson shared in a press release that she wanted her client’s nails to say “classy, fierce, phenomenal woman,” and that they did. With crystal embellishments and a sharp-tipped shape, Brunson’s custom ombre nails were in fierce competition with her newly awarded Golden Globe trophy, which she received as the winner of Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series for her work in Abbott Elementary. After applying KISS press-on nails, Jackson personalized this set for Brunson by reshaping each nail from coffin to a more medium-pointed length and added a couple of extra crystals to enhance the pre-existing ombre design.

Julia Garner’s diamond-dusted tips

Photography via instagram.com/betina_goldstein

On the red carpet, Ozark’s Best Supporting Actress in a Musical, Comedy or Drama award winner Julia Garner debuted an ultra-thin diamond French manicure sure to capture the heart of minimalists worldwide. Chanel nail artist Betina Goldstein took to Instagram reels to share her product list used to achieve these “diamond dust tips.” The ballet slipper shade used at the base of this look is Chanel’s Longwear Nail Colour in Ballerina, with a glittery silver polish used for the thinly-painted tips.

When taking in the current beauty landscape, you’ll find French manicures, airbrushed designs, chunky nail charms and press-on nails are the manicures of the moment. With one glance at these nostalgia-inducing trends, we couldn’t help but wonder, is it the year 2000 or 2022?

If press-ons being the secret behind enviably glossy manicures on celebrities like J.Lo and Hailee Steinfeld’s fingertips doesn’t sway you, take TikTok’s #pressonnails hashtag with 4.9 billion views as evidence that this mani cheat is in its comeback era.

Since false nails gained prominence during the ’80s as an affordable dupe for glamorous salon manicures (see: classic crimson talons on stars like Diana Ross and Tina Turner), the trend trickled into the ’90s and eventually early aughts before being overtaken by artfully hand-painted acrylic styles. When considering the ease of press-on manicures today, it makes us wonder why this nail hack ever went out of style in the first place.

Alexa Liberatore, founder of the Allure Readers’ Choice Award-winning Canadian nail care brand FACILE, believes the return of the press-ons was the result of a demand for salon manicure alternatives during the peak of pandemic lockdowns. Along with the convenience of these false nails also came staying power and approval from A-list celebs — especially during this hectic time of year. “Everyone is so busy during the holiday season that this alternative saves them time and money they would otherwise be spending in a salon!” says the Montreal-based nail expert.

And with a list of festive fêtes to attend, sometimes one nail design just won’t do. Some clothes require cherry red stiletto tips, and others a more minimal nude with subtle glitter accents. This is where press-on nails really shine. “They are versatile — depending on the wear time you want, you can use the nail tabs and wear them for a special event or use the glue and keep them on for up to two weeks at a time,” shares Liberatore, referring to the alternate ways of applying press-ons.

Interested in trying a press-on manicure for yourself? Here’s expert advice on how to apply, maintain and remove press-on nails.

How to prep your nails for press-ons

According to Liberatore, to apply your holiday party press-ons, it’s best to have a cuticle pusher, nail file, nail buffer, alcohol pad, and glue or nail tabs in your nail kit. Begin by gently pushing your cuticles back, then buffing is up next. “You need to buff the entire surface of your natural nail bed to ‘rough it up’ and create a slight texture for the glue to best adhere to the natural nail,” she says. Once buffed, you can wipe the nails down with an alcohol pad or nail polish remover to remove any natural oils. And finally, apply the glue (or tabs, if you’re going for a more temporary look) all over your natural nail and press the false nail firmly in place while holding for 15 seconds.

How to maintain your press-on manicure

To maintain your new nails, Liberatore has three key tips you’ll need to keep in mind. First, remember that prep is the most important thing for a long-lasting manicure — so take this step seriously. Second, as tempting as it may be, skip using your nails as tools! “For example, don’t use the tip of your nail as a box cutter, or a soda can opener,” she insists. Lastly, we know self care is important but be careful not to soak your nails in water for extended periods of time as it will begin to loosen the nail adhesive. Although, this advice will come in handy for removal.

How to safely remove your press-on nails

When it’s time to swap your press-ons out to match your next outfit, Liberatore suggests soaking your nails in warm soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes for the safest removal.“You can also add any type of oil to the water to help loosen the nails,” she adds. Rinse and repeat these steps for your next set and you’re en route to becoming a press-on pro.

If you’re like us, you’ll find pleasure in switching up your manicure without the cost and long-term commitment of salon gel manis. And the design and colour options are endless. From frost-tipped almond nails to a metallic mani moment from celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik, tap through below for our top press-on nail picks for the holiday season. They’ll look festive in your cart, and even better on your fingertips.

If you’re not familiar with the theory sweeping the nation (a.k.a. TikTok), the lore of the red nail theory alleges that crimson nail polish is the most appealing colour to men. Apparently, men like red nails so much, the very sight of it leads them to ask you out, shell out compliments, and/or approach you in the wild.

Why, you ask? Well, the term “red nail theory” was originally coined by Robyn Delmonte, better known as @GirlBossTown, when she noticed a spike in male attention whenever she donned the hue on her fingertips. She theorized that men are drawn to red nails because it reminds them of… their moms (and other female authority figures from their youth). “Every time I have red nails, a guy comments on it… and then it hit me,” she shared on TikTok. “In the nineties when we were growing up, women had red nails a lot, especially our moms. And I weirdly think guys are attracted to red nails because it reminds them of their moms.”

Now, I don’t doubt that red is an attention-grabbing colour. How else can we, as a nation, explain the success of Kit Kat bars, Colonel Sanders, and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Mauricio Umansky’s real-estate agency, The Agency? But that said, selecting my nail colour to bend to the preference of men, in 2022, is not exactly it. However, for the sake of science and the culture, I screamed “to the salon!” and took the red nail theory out for a spin.

Monday started strong when my nails and I were approached by not one but two of my male neighbours, sparking up conversation beyond the usual “hi,” and asking about my travel plans, my job, and most importantly, my name (huge considering I’ve lived in the building for almost two years). Was this a positive reaction to my nails, or just extra time by the elevator? We might never know, but attention was given so that’s a point for the theory.

Later that day, my nails picked up their daily cappuccino, hit up a co-ed Studio Lagree class, and attended a dinner with friends. And while my barista (a woman) complimented my nails, no one else did — that’s called balance, baby.

Tuesday was a relatively chill day since my body, mind, and fingers needed to rest post-workout, so I decided to take my tips to the gluten-free aisles of Farm Boy. While I perused the assortment of snacks, my digits were hard at work picking up items and setting them down in the sight line of nearly every male patron and employee in the hopes that they might elicit a convo or a compliment, to no avail.

Departing the grocery store my nails locked eyes with a rogue car hub cap. And knowing cis men’s stereotypical love of cars, I stood next to it in hopes that the gent who had lost it might return to retrieve it, and ask me out. After two whole minutes and zero action, I bid the discarded hub cap adieu.

On Wednesday, my nails had a stacked day of events to attend. To get the party started, they made their way to a beauty preview where, once again, not a single human commented on my tips despite using them to deliberately swatch various embargoed products I can neither confirm nor deny.

From there, I made my way over to Holts Café to celebrate Moët & Chandon. This was an optimal chance for my crimson tips to mix and mingle with the opposite sex. Yet not even these blurry men (see below), with a clear view of my Champagne-holding hands, cared to pay mes mains any attention. I had to make a run for it.

Photography courtesy of Amanda Demeku

The restaurant Kasa Moto was unveiling its new menu, so my hands bopped across the street with red nail varnish on their tips and hope in their heart. The party was in full swing so my mitts said hi to the sushi bar and toasted strangers at the martini station, and yet still, no takers — total bust.

Photography courtesy of Amanda Demeku

Thursday my nails had an actual date to attend, arranged before the colour red got involved, so I wasn’t entirely surprised when the mention of my manicure never entered the chat (even though I gave my pointers every opportunity to shine). And while I will be seeing him again… does this encounter technically count?

Which brings me to Sunday, my final act, the airport — where everyone in your age range, with a pulse, is fair game. In case my harrowing retelling of the above experiences did not prepare you for the ultimate fail alas, not one single sir on either side of the border, come security, customs, or the Starbucks line, cared to pay my scarlet claws a single shoutout. We didn’t have to go out like this, but here we are.

Photography courtesy of Amanda Demeku

So girlies, my takeaway? Paint your nails any damn colour you please. And a message for all my male readers: As the great Tyra Banks once screamed: I was rooting for you, we were all rooting for you! How dare you? Learn from this.

How to Remove Your Shellac Nail Polish at Home https://fashionmagazine.com/beauty-grooming/how-to-remove-shellac-from-nails-at-home/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 17:00:43 +0000 https://fashionmagazine.com/?p=431333 We got expert advice on how to remove your grown-out gel manicure safely (no picking!) while in self-isolation

The post How to Remove Your Shellac Nail Polish at Home appeared first on FASHION Magazine.

]]>
This article was originally published in March 2020.

I think we can all agree that in the beauty-sphere, Shellac and gel nail polish has been the best thing to come along since sliced bread. These LED-cured polishes bestow our nails with chip-resistant coverage, extreme shine and extend the longevity of our manicure for weeks. But with the highs, come the lows. The removal process is, well, a process! That’s why most of us leave it to the skilled nail artists and technicians to deal with when we transition from an old polish job to a new one.

But times are… strange. In a matter of a few days, we’ve staggered into a global pandemic, which means we’re all faced with an influx of new restrictions, including social distancing rules and spas and salons being temporarily shuttered. Since we’re all doing our part to stop the spread of COVID-19, which means staying home, what do we do with our gel nails? Pandemic or not, nails are going to continue to grow and if your gel manicure is on the brink of total collapse, it’s time to take removal matters into your own hands—and we’ll tell you how.

According to Leeanne Colley, the owner of Toronto’s Tips Nail Bar and a professional manicurist who’s worked with celebrity clients including Lady Gaga and Gigi Hadid, it’s not hard to remove gel polish at home, but it does take inner strength. “Sure, you need a few tools, most of which you probably already have at home. But the most important tool that people need is patience.”

There’s a common misconception that removing gel nail polish leaves nails weak and unhealthy. Untrue, says Colley. “When removal is done correctly and patiently, it doesn’t damage your nails,” she says. But peeling or picking, that’s a different story. It’s tempting and occasionally satisfying, but it causes major damage. “A single peel will remove at least six [of 50] layers of your nail,” says Colley. “It’s the worst thing you can do for your nails.” Frequent peeling weakens nails and over time it leaves them brittle, cracked and left with ridges.

We asked Colley to explain how to remove gel polish at home—which she promises in most cases can be completed in under 30 minutes. This translates to half an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race<—or whatever 30-minute self-soothing show you’ve been binging on since social distancing and isolation became our new reality.

Tool Kit

You likely already have many (if not all) of the tools needed to do the job at home. But if you don’t, we’ve linked to websites you can order from, or listed alternatives you might find at home. Ready, set, soak!

Here’s what you likely already have on your cupboard:

 • Aluminum foil (cut 10, 2-inch squares)
 • Paper towel (cut 10, 1-inch squares)

Here’s what you might need to buy:

 • 100% acetone (or acetone-based nail polish remover)
 • Stainless steel cuticle pusher (or a wooden cuticle stick)
 • Nail file
 • Nail buffer
 • Nail strengthening polish
 • Cuticle oil (or coconut oil)

Step 1:Lightly file the tops of your nails

The first thing you want to do is break the gel polish seal on your nails using a file. “This part is crucial because a lot of the different gel nail polish companies have non-soak topcoats,” says Colley. Filing the nail breaks the seal, this way the acetone can pass right through the topcoat’s barrier and do all the heavy lifting.

Step 2: Become a wrap star

Once you’ve sanded away the topcoat on all 10 nails, Colley recommends working on one hand at a time. If you go all-in, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Start by saturating a small paper towel square with acetone, then immediately place it on your fingernail. Next, Colley says to tightly wrap the aluminum foil around your finger to cover the paper towel, then repeat on the other four digits. “Acetone evaporates, so air will slow it down. That’s why the tighter you can wrap the quicker the gel will lift,” says Colley.

Step 3: Let them soak

According to Colley, not all gel polishes are cut from the same cloth. “With so many brands, the formulas vary and some are more difficult to remove. Some can even take up to an hour.” Though in most cases, she says 15 minutes should do it. How can you tell if the gel is ready? “Remove a foil, and if it looks like the gel is lifting and crumbling you should be good to go.”

Step 4: Remove foils and push

Working one finger at a time, remove the foil and use the metal cuticle pusher or wooden cuticle stick, gently scrape the gel from the nail. “If you find the gel polish isn’t lifting easily, then nails need more time to soak,” Colley.

Step 5: Buff, baby, buff

Nails should look almost gel-free at this point, but you may have some rough spots. Use the less coarse side of the buffer to gently smooth any roughness left on the surface of the nail. “This step just removes any excess gel that’s left on your nail from the base coat,” says Colley. Plus, it leaves them extra smooth. Now, repeat steps one to five on your next hand.

Step 6: Give them some TLC

You should always moisturize your nails and the area around them, but it’s even more important after you’ve removed your gel polish manicure. Colley recommends using cuticle oil but if you don’t have any handy you can borrow from your pantry. “Using something like coconut oil as an after-care [cream] to add moisture can also be beneficial,” says Colley. She says gel-sensitive nails or not, our nails are naturally dry, so it’s less about hydrating them with cuticle oil and more about giving them flexibly, so they don’t break or crack. If you feel naked without nail polish, you can top your nails with a strengthening product. Colley likes OPI Nail Envy, which fortifies nails with hydrolyzed wheat protein and calcium.

Hailey Bieber might as well be the face of summer’s minimalist beauty trend. The model and now skincare mogul’s “glazed donut” glow is the season’s most sought-after look. But much like her dewy complexion, Bieber’s glistening talons are hard to miss — and we have celebrity nail artist Zola Ganzorigt to thank.

The Los Angeles-based manicurist (whose clientele includes Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Hudgens, Kendall Jenner, Maude Apatow and Simone Ashley) is responsible for creating what she calls “glazed donut nails” — a nude chromatic combination that resembles the confection it’s named after.

Just because we’re ditching the heavy makeup this summer doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a little sparkle, especially when it comes to our nails. So we caught up with Ganzorigt to talk about her favourite trends, creating the perfect nude shade and her predictions for fall.

What’s your favourite nail trend for this summer?

Usually bright colours would be my answer but this time I’d say Hailey Bieber’s glazed donut nails. It’s really simple and minimalist but catches everyone’s eye from a mile away. (Ganzorigt shared everything she used to create this look on IG, which you can shop in the gallery below.)

What are the most sought after nail looks by your clients?

When summer comes, bright colours are more popular. So recently, I’ve been getting requests for bright neon colours such as orange, yellow, blue and pink.

What shapes and lengths are most on trend right now?

In my opinion, people are going towards a more natural look and most of my clients get the medium length oval shape.

Do you have a favourite design that you’ve created?

My favourite design right now is, as I mentioned before, Hailey Bieber’s glazed donut nails. You can create it with any colour and it just makes them all more elegant and pretty.

When you’re working with a client for a photoshoot, how do you coordinate their nails with the rest of their look?

First I look at what they’re wearing and understand what they’re trying to present. Then I talk to the client and we come up with an idea together [and decide] if [they] should do [a] design or just go simple and neutral.

How much of a consideration is skin tone/undertone when you’re selecting a colour for a client?

That’s really important especially when it comes to nude shades. So that’s why I always mix at least two different nude colours depending on my client’s skin tone.

What are some tools that you would recommend for at-home manicures?

The fundamental [part] of [a] good and long lasting manicure is good nail prep. So I’d recommend nail prep tools such as a pusher and nipper. They aren’t hard to find and you can get them from Amazon. And also, always keep your nails moisturized and use cuticle oil, or any beauty oil, every day.

Any predictions around nail trends for fall 2022?

When it comes to nails, it’s really unpredictable nowadays. But usually dark, warm toned colours get more popular in fall. Since chrome nails are so hot this year, I’d say dark chrome nails will be really trendy in fall.

Shop some of our top picks for an eye-catching at-home manicure in the gallery below.

If you can’t squeeze in an appointment at your fave nail bar before the holidays, no need to panic. You can still show up and show out at your upcoming shindigs thanks to this super easy DIY holiday nail look whipped up by Rita Remark, Essie’s lead nail artist and global educator. Abstract, painterly nail looks have been popping up on our Insta feeds all year, which is ideal, since it just so happens to be a foolproof method for those that don’t exactly have pro nail artist on their CV.

Step 1: Ace of base

easy holiday nail look nude nail base
Photography Courtesy of Essie

To increase long wear and protect your nail bed, apply two coats of your favourite base coat, followed by a neutral coat of polish. If your skin has neutral or cool undertones, go with a creamy or pinky shade. If you’re warm, try beige.

Step 2: Winning streaks

a neutral nail base with a single line of polish in a berry shade

Once your neutral shade has dried, carefully brush on a berry red in wavy lines across each nail. (If you have the time and patience, you can dump a little polish onto some tin foil and use a small art brush to get extra precise lines.) Paint one or two lines on each nail and take your time. Don’t fret if it takes one or two nails to get in the groove. This is an easy holiday nail look to remove so it’s no big deal if you need to start over with one or two nails.

Step 3: Coordinate colours

Once the berry shade has dried, repeat step two with a brighter red hue and white polish and paint so each stroke is side-by-side. Feel free to experiment with the colours of your choice — other fun options could include metallics or a green-on-green palette.

Step 4: Go the distance

nails with abstract red white and berry waves and a neutral base

Since chips are not on this holiday menu, protect your handiwork with a longwear top coat and reapply daily. A moisturizing serum or nail oil will also go a long way in making your cuticles and hands look like they were groomed by a professional.

Machine Gun Kelly is getting into the nail polish game.

The musician (and boyfriend to Megan Fox) is set to launch his own gender-neutral nail polish line, UN/DN LAQR. Available online December 2, the brand will offer 10 shades from neutrals to bright colours, with one black lacquer aptly named “Depressionist.” Each polish will cost $23, with trios going for $67 and kits of six being sold at $110.

Born Colson Baker, the 31-year-old musician co-founded the brand with incubator Unlisted Brand Lab, and told Allure he chose shades that can be worn year-round. As for the name, UN/DN is a play on the word “undone,” reported Business of Fashion, representing Baker’s ambition to flip the script on the beauty world that has long catered to women.

Known for his eccentric personal style, MGK loves to sport a manicure. At times elevated with the addition of acrylics, his nails are often coloured with busy patterns and mismatched hues. Machine Gun Kelly is the unofficial poster boy for what the internet has dubbed the “Manic Pixie Dream Boyfriend” – a man who is free-spirited, artsy and grungy AF (in a cool way). Notably, this free-spirited regard for self-expression often results in exhibiting gender fluidity.

Machine Gun Kelly is one of a growing number of male celebrities who have worn nail polish to showcase their personal style.

Artists like Lil Nas X, A$AP Rocky and Lil Yachty have been known to don impressive manicures, and while men sporting nail art is nothing new, it would seem we’re in the age of capitalizing on the trend. The launch of UN/DN comes just weeks after Harry Styles released his own beauty brand, Pleasing. Similar to Styles, Baker’s line aims to embrace inclusivity.

Male celebs stepping into the beauty space speaks to the growing calls for gender-neutral fashion and beauty products, specifically by Gen Z. And while the celebrity-founded beauty brand space is arguably over-saturated, line’s like Machine Gun Kelly’s represent an important cultural shift in traditional gender expectations. Sign us up!

It was only a matter of time before singer-turned-fashion-darling Harry Styles stepped into the role we all know is right for him: beauty mogul. You read that right — Harry Styles has launched his own beauty brand, Pleasing, and we’re kind of freaking out.

Known for donning feather boas, mismatched patterns and statement jewelry, Styles has become something of a fashion risk-taker in recent years, and fans love his over the top style. On November 15, Dazed published an interview with Styles — alongside an experimental photoshoot — where he opened up about his Pleasing and its starting lineup: nail polish and skincare.

The Dazed cover photo served us a nipple-bearing Styles on a motorcycle sporting a custom-made Gucci outfit, complete with leather boots and violet flare pants. The “Watermelon Sugar” singer posted the shot on Twitter with the caption “Find your Pleasing,” his brand’s official tagline.

It seems only fitting for Styles to introduce his new line to the world by putting his non-conforming fashion sense on display. Photos from the shoot — which broke the internet, obviously — show Styles in avant-garde ensembles through which he channels a cloaked magician, a Victorian painting and something that can only be described as “rich aunt” energy.

Pleasing’s ethos is clear: It’s not about adhering to beauty norms, but rather celebrating unique identities. In a press release, the brand wrote it hopes to “dispel the myth of a binary existence.” The line thereby centres the conversation around bodies that have been historically excluded from beauty spaces.

Take, for instance, the Pleasing hand model: Harry Styles himself. In a promotional video, the new polish is displayed on his manicured hands that are tattooed and decorated with an assortment of rings. It’s a distinctly different beauty campaign, and we would expect nothing less from Styles, who’s clearly bringing his androgynous style to the line.

The brand’s first drop, Perfect Pearl, is available for pre-order on Pleasing’s website with shipments going out the week of November 29. Nail polishes in the collection include a pearly white, a clear iridescent matte topcoat and a curated set of four Perfect polishes.

Pleasing is also dipping its toes into skincare with two products: a serum pen that hydrates the under eyes and lips and an illuminating serum that comes in the form of iridescent capsules resembling pearls.

Styles stated sustainability was a big part of the development process. According to Dazed, the Pleasing line was created with “the lightest possible footprint in mind, using post-consumer plastics and compostable paper printed with bio-sourced inks.” Ranging from $27 to $87, prices reflect the often costly process of producing sustainable beauty products. Some fans have expressed disappointment with the price point — especially those of us in Canada, who can expect to pay hefty duty and shipping prices compared to our American counterparts.

A post shared by Pleasing (@pleasing)

There’s no doubt that there’s been an influx of celebrities venturing into the beauty zeitgeist — enter Ariana Grande, Addison Rae, and Billie Eilish, to name a few. But Styles seems to intentionally leave the door open for Pleasing to grow and expand into other areas.

“Do I have any idea where Pleasing will be in five years? No. Obviously I have an idea of what I would like us to be aiming at, but honestly, I don’t know,” the singer told Dazed. “That’s what makes it exciting to me.”

With the vague promise of other ventures in the future, we’re sure to be in for even more products that channel Styles’s unique aesthetic. For now, we’re simply left to wonder what product drops could come next. An exfoliating watermelon sugar scrub? It only seems right.

Halloween always offers up the perfect excuse to get a little adventurous with your look. Regardless of whether you have plans to wear a costume, you can still have a little fun with your nails come spooky season. Since we recognize that a neon orange pumpkin manicure might not be a great wardrobe fit post All Hallows’ Eve, we gathered some of our favourite on-trend Halloween nail designs that you won’t need to hide with a pair of gloves come November 1.

A classic tortoiseshell manicure

We may be used to seeing this classically chic pattern on glam sunglasses and other accessories, but it has officially migrated to your nail beds and we are not mad about it. Not only is this marble effect very on-trend, but the mix of dark browns, black and orange tie perfectly into Halloween season in a modern and clever way. Get the look with CND’s new Candlelight shade and Phantom, a deep brown-black.

Nude nails with metallic webs

Metallics — one of the easiest, goes-with-anything nail looks — are back. Adding some gold spiderweb details is a great way to elevate any nail look, whether you want to add a little scare to your weekly nude mani or take it a step further with a black or merlot base shade. No time to hit the salon? Go faux with these chic limited edition stick-ons from Kiss.

An abstract Halloween manicure

For those that want festive tips without having a full on jack-o-lantern motif, this deconstructed spin is likely right up your alley. The bonus? These artsy abstract swirls and swipes are probably one of the easiest negative space trends to replicate. There truly are no rules when it comes to re-creating this style and you can use as much or as little of each colour as you wish. Get the look with this perfect pumpkin shimmer and moody black polish.

Black French manicure with a twist

The French manicure may be back, but this is not your mom’s square white tips. Instead, this Halloween nail design is all about experimenting with new shapes, colours and designs, and this black ombré effect can easily transition from evening Halloween party to morning video call. If, like most of us, you don’t have an incredibly steady hand or the time to create nail art with such detail, you can easily take this look to the next level with these celestial-themed nail stickers.

A matte mani with a blood drip

For those who won’t give up their nude nails no matter what, this minimalist look might just do the trick. The almond shape adds a chic finish and the deep maroon drips could be blood, or another cool design accent that will still give you that seasonal pop of colour. The key to a look like this is the contrasting matte base, so get started with a matte top coat before adding any accents.

A Halloween nail design for those who don’t love Halloween

If you avoid scary movies, costumes and Halloween festivities at all costs, you can still get in on the spirit of the season with this sweet-as-candy nail look. This fun and playful manicure may inspire you to add a friendly ghost to your favourite pastel, floral or other all-seasons nail look. Casper, is that you?

Attention nail polish lovers: Hermès has entered the chat. Following the launch of its own beauty line in March 2020, the brand is once again expanding its offering with Les Mains Hermès, a nail polish collection guaranteed to upgrade your mani game this fall.

The collection, launching October 15, comprises 24 stunning nail lacquers (inspired by Hermès’s iconic Parisian address, 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré) in an assortment of shades from vibrant fuchsia pinks, such as Rouge Exotique, to Violet Byzantin, a moody dark plum. A best-seller is sure to be the luxury house’s signature orange hue, Orange Boîte. The made-in-France formulas promise high concentrations of ultra-fine pigments, and are based on existing lipstick shades, so you can match your tips to your lips.

That’s not all, though. Les Main Hermès offers up a full manicure experience, elevating the at-home beauty ritual with a high-gloss transparent gel top coat, protective enamel base coat, an all-natural nail and cuticle oil, branded poplar wood nail files and an incredibly lush hand cream (the scent — a beautiful blend of sandalwood, arnica, rosewater and patchouli — was dreamed up by in-house perfumer Christine Nagel).

Of course, it wouldn’t be Hermès without meticulous attention to design and detail. The nail enamels are dressed up with an elegant white and gold cap created in collaboration with Pierre Hardy (the weighty toppers are a unifying thread in the entire beauty line). No Birkin, no problem — consider these it-polishes a more attainable but equally chic option.

This article was originally published in April 2020.

With week three of social distancing well underway, and public authorities still turning the lights off on non-essential services, we’ve all had to hit pause on many scheduled plans, like our go-to beauty services. And for those of you who are nail salon loyalists, not going for your regular feel-good refresh every week or two can be somewhat of a rude awakening — especially without knowing for sure when life will return back to normal. To help you out during this adjustment period, we spoke to two professional manicurists, Essie’s global lead educator Rita Remark and CND brand ambassador Winnie Huang, to get insider tips for perfecting the art of the mani and pedi at home. And even if you’re a DIY aficionado, trust us: a little help from these Canadian experts will only better your nail game, especially now that sandal season is almost upon us. Here, six DIY manicure and pedicure tips to help you nail your next home spa session.

Start with a clean (dry) base and shape

First things first: for nail colour that lasts well beyond a couple of days, start by removing any traces of existing (regular) polish residue, dirt and oil with an acetone-based remover, suggests both pros. Once you have a clean base to work with, it’s time to trim your nails to a desired length with nail clippers, followed by refining the shape of them with a nail file.

Now, nail files don’t seem like the thing you need to overthink (many of us have probably have emery boards gathering dust in drawers around our house) but for a salon-standard manicure, it’s worth upgrading your nail file selection. “Try to use a finer-grit nail file. It gives you more control when shaping without losing any length,” says Remark. Opting for a softer, cushier board also avoids damaging your nails when filing, adds Huang, as ultra-grainy files are known to shred the edges of natural nails if not careful, leaving them more prone to splitting and breaking.

A common thought is to sit and soak your nails before tending to dry, overgrown cuticles, or even before filing nails for that matter, but both Remark and Huang suggest only reserving this step for your feet to cleanse and soften any calluses. For your hands, a dry manicure is best for extending the lifespan of all your hard work. “Your nails are porous, so when you soak them, they absorb the water and become more flexible, which in turn often results in chipping,” says Huang. When pampering your toes however, Huang suggests soaking them in warm water for five to ten minutes, and adding in some soothing bath salts for an elevated spa-like feel.

Tend to your cuticles

Once you have your perfect nail shape, proceed with gently pushing back cuticles with a stainless steel cuticle pusher before lightly exfoliating the nail surface with a nail buffer, recommends Remark. Alternatively, applying a cuticle oil and a cuticle exfoliator (Huang suggests using CND’s Cuticle Eraser and Solar Oil) and gently scrubbing nail beds with a manicure brush works just as well. “This will gently push back the skin around the nail and help exfoliate any cuticle and dry skin away,” says Huang.

For feet, don’t forget to give some TLC to any scaly heels with a callus remover. Remark is a fan of the double-sided foot file: “The coarse side is for removing calluses and the finer side softens,” she says.

And while it may be tempting to clip cuticles, don’t go overboard. Delicate trimming — with a proper cuticle nipper — should only be reserved for loose, dead skin (aka hangnails). “Nip hangnails off while being careful not to cut into your actual skin,” stresses Huang.

Lotion up and prep properly for polish

Next up: Massage in some lotion (avoiding your actual nails as best as you can), and give your nails a once-over with a swipe of acetone.

Two thin coats are better than one massive thick coat

The perfect polish application is your best friend when it comes to longwear nail colour, and that process always starts with one swipe of a good basecoat to protect your nails, says Remark. It also gives your colour something to properly cling to. “This is the double-sided tape that adheres the polish to your nail. It’ll help your manicure last that much longer,” adds Huang.

Proceed with brushing on two thin coats of colour (the pro-approved wait time is one to two minutes between each coat) and finish up with a topcoat — unless you’ve been polishing with a multitasking, all-in-one basecoat, says Remark. And it’s important to cap the free edge, both pros advise – this means to swipe across the end of the nail after every polish layer.

Fix mistakes

Dealing with polish smudges and slip-ups? Try upcycling old makeup brushes for quick clean-ups. “My favourite trick is to use a tiny angled brush dipped in nail polish remover,” reveals Huang. “But don’t load too much liquid on the brush, which may cause flooding,” she continues. If you don’t have a makeup brush to spare, good-old orangewood sticks will easily do the clean-up (and earlier cuticle-pushing) trick as well.

“If you smudge or nick your polish when it’s still tacky, dip the tip of your finger in acetone, and with a very gentle touch, you can glide the polish back into place,” adds Remark.

Say yes to more cuticle oil

During these hand-washing and hand-sanitization obsessed times, more is more. In fact, Huang recommends pampering cuticles with oil or a balm once to twice a day to keep nails and skin well moisturized. “Really commit to a cuticle-care routine. I always like to keep a bottle of oil close to me. Now more than ever, it’s time to take care of cuticles since we’re washing our hands way more often.”

In a regular year, wearing amazingly detailed holiday nail designs would be as simple as booking an appointment at your local nail salon. Alas, it is 2020. Not being able to see nail artists in person complicates things, but we have solutions.

First, simplify! You don’t need a Meredith Grey-level steady hand to DIY some festival nail art. Think solid colours: a wash of red, silver, gold or any sort of glitter-y polish. (Or perhaps a solid colour topped with some glitter? Layer away!)

Second, press-on nails. The old-school technique is having a major renaissance right now and there are more size, shape and colour options than ever. Check out designs from Canadian nail experts at TIPS Nail Bar, Naked Beauty Bar and Rebecca Ramsdale. If you don’t think you’re a press-on person, think again.

See below for 16 holiday nail design ideas to try now.

Red

It doesn’t get more classic than a red manicure – and the design options are endless.

With heavy government-ordered pandemic measures back in place in many COVID-19 hotspots, including mandated salon closures, the state of many of our nails has, once again, landed entirely in our own hands. One scroll through celebrity nail artist and KISS Nails ambassador Gina Edwards’ Instagram page and we’re sure you’ll be convinced that, with more weeks at home inevitably still to come, this social-distancing era is prime time to embrace press-on nails and practice your nail-art skills.

Since the spring, the sought-after editorial manicurist has been blessing our feed with whimsical stick-on nails that she’s been coordinating with her face coverings, and they’ve been a much-welcomed source of joy during the pandemic. So when we got the opportunity to catch up with Edwards virtually, we had to ask her about the go-to items in her quarantine nail kit and the nail look we’ll likely see her rocking this holiday. Read on for what she shared.

Most treasured possessions in her nail kit right now:

“The number one tool I could not bear to not have at home is a toe nail clipper. When my nails are overgrown and unkept, this a lifesaver. Then the follow up for my unruly nails are KISS’s hand and foot masks, especially since we’re washing our hands so often.”

Favourite press-on nails during quarantine:

“As an artist, I find myself creating new styles and the best product to do that on is the Gel Fantasy or Salon Acrylic Naturals from KISS. They’re an open canvas and I can paint on top of the nails with ease.”

Her no-fail, holiday-ready nail look:

“A glitter nail always feel glamorous and festive. You can use polish or a stick-on nail from KISS that takes less than 3 minutes to apply.”

The royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry feels like a lifetime ago – particularly now that the pair have relocated to the US after stepping down as senior royals two years after the big day – but one big beauty question has remained since that day which we’d never had a clear answer on: What nail polish colour was Meghan wearing? Many speculated it was Essie’s Ballet Slippers (the colour favoured by The Queen), which seemed like a pretty good guess, but it turns out it was a custom shade.

Photograph by JOHN SIBLEY/AFP via Getty Images

In a new report by British Vogue, the site revealed that Meghan visited London’s DryBar ahead of her big day for her CND shellac manicure and that the end result was a mix of two shades. The Duchess opted for one coat of Unmasked (a baby pink hue) as the base layer, followed by two coats of Negligee (a very sheer, pale white-pink) on top. For her pedicure, she chose Cashmere Wrap (a soft neutral).

Markle played by the rules for her wedding day mani by opting for a light, neutral colour. On previous occasions, she broke the unofficial palace nail protocol by wearing darker hues on her fingers. But let’s face it, she wears both very well.

Whether you opt to replicate the look during your next at-home manicure, or visit to a salon as the country slowly begins to reopen, we think this is the perfect wear-with-everything hue for summer – and we suspect we’ll be seeing it everywhere now that the news is finally out.

Now’s the Perfect Time to Learn to Use Press-On Nails https://fashionmagazine.com/beauty-grooming/how-to-use-press-on-nails/ Thu, 21 May 2020 22:35:06 +0000 https://fashionmagazine.com/?p=431527 A mistake-proof mani FTW!

The post Now’s the Perfect Time to Learn to Use Press-On Nails appeared first on FASHION Magazine.

]]>

Newsflash: Press-on nails are awesome. Like nail art itself, they’ve long been beloved—and popularized—by trendsetting Black women, and more recently they have become a beauty secret-weapon for red carpet events by celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Cynthia Erivo. But they don’t have to be just for special events: Wearing press-on nails IRL is surprisingly easy and seriously cute. (Plus, they’ve come a looooong way from the fussy sets of the past.) Not only do modern press-ons look like a professional paint job, they are also less maintenance and cost less money than a salon manicure, says Neketa Andrews, a Toronto-based nail tech and founder of Nailketa.

With salons and spas still closed across most of the country, there’s never been a better time to give them a try. Here’s how to use press-on nails to get a profesh-looking spring manicure from the comfort of your own couch.

Step 1: ID your nail size

When determining what size of press-on nails to use, Andrews explains that the right fit should lie flush with the edges of your natural nail bed, perfectly covering your whole nail. To help make the process easier, many brands have a number system when it comes to sizes. The numbers go from biggest to smallest, with zero typically being for thumbs and higher numbers for pinkies, explains Gina Edwards, KISS products Inc. brand ambassador and a celebrity manicurist whose client list includes Naomi Campbell and Rosie Huntington Whiteley. This number system can vary slightly between brands but generally sizing tends to be similar, and many brands provide a sizing guide on their website. Once you ID your size for each finger, write it down in your phone, so you remember for future applications and don’t have to spend time on trial and error.

Step 2: File and prep your nails

Prepping your nails for press-ons doesn’t differ much from what you would (ideally) do for a regular polish mani. “Pushing back your cuticles, cutting your nails down and giving them a gentle buff to create a rough surface so that the glue can bond well is recommended for a better hold,” says Andrews. You also want to get your nails as clean as possible. Edwards advises washing your hands before getting started and swiping an acetone-based remover over your nail beds to get an extra-clean surface, which will help with adherence.

Step 3: Glue down your set

Your nails are sized and your fingers are prepped, so now it’s go time. To achieve the best application results, Andrews recommends applying one nail at a time and not rushing it. Apply a small amount of glue onto your natural nail plate. (Most sets are sold with glue but you can purchase it separately.) For the sturdiest hold, Andrews recommends applying one or two drops of glue and then spreading it across the entire surface of your nail for a thin, even coat. Then, apply your press-on nail right away and hold it in place for 10 seconds before moving on to the next finger. To ensure your nails are secure, Edwards advises placing your press-on right up to the cuticle leaving no gaps or exposed nail bed.

Step 4: Shorten and shape them

Now that your nails are on (hooray!), if the length is too long for your liking, simply file down the press-ons to your desired length. “Filing and contouring the sides of the nails will give a more natural and streamlined look,” Edwards says. She recommends always using your file at an angle underneath the nail and never directly on top of the press-on because you may end up filing off the colour or design. And if you’re tempted to cut them at all with nail clippers, don’t! It can damage and crack the nail.

Step 5: Make them last

Now that your application is finished, you want those babies to last, right? Depending on the type of press-on used and the form of glue, most sets should stay on anywhere from five days to well over a week. To get the most out of your newly applied manicure, both Andrews and Edwards advise against soaking your nails in warm or hot water as this can cause the press-on to swell and pop off. (Pick up some dish gloves, stat!) Another no-no: using your nails to open cans or jars, as it can weaken the hold of the glue.

When it’s time to remove your press-ons

When it’s time to take your press-ons off, you want to take precautions to ensure you don’t damage your natural nails during the process. According to Edwards, the best way to remove your press-ons is soaking them in warm water for a few minutes, then applying a little bit of cuticle oil or olive oil onto an orange-wood stick and gently encouraging the nail to release by massaging in a circular motion around your nail beds.

Can you reuse press-on nails?

If your press-ons are in good shape after removal (there’s no wear and tear and the shape didn’t get warped during removal), they can be worn again. Some brands, like Static Nails, even carry styles that are specifically made to be worn again and again. But before you pop them back on, Andrews recommends wiping down the inside of the nail with an alcohol-soaked cotton swab to remove any residual glue. If there’s still glue hanging on post wipe down, she says you can gently buff it off with a file or buffer. Editor’s note: Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, it might be best to refrain from reusing nails for the time being.

Spring 2020 nail trends to try

One of the golden rules of nail art is to have fun, and press-ons are no different. There are *so* many options now, from nude to OTT glitter to intricate designs, that you truly are spoiled for choice. If you want to hit on a spring trend with your next application, Edwards is all about light peach and terracotta hues right now, and Andrews is obsessed with pastels and metallics. Both call-out the double French manicure—two stripes of colour on the tip—as the nail art style du jour. Just remember: Anything goes. “Try something fresh, like a nail colour or design that is new to your style and step outside your comfort level,” says Edwards.

Press-ons are flying off the shelves right now, but here are a few styles to try if you can snap them up!

From her signature M.A.Bs (Morning After Bags) to her colourful, mix-and-match garments, fashion designer and household name Rebecca Minkoff has a knack for painting a chic and realistic picture of her customers, and meeting them right where they’re at in their lives, from the busy young professional to the time-strapped mom.

Nowhere was that more evident than in her see-now, buy-now Spring/Summer 2020 New York Fashion Week collection showing back in February pre-pandemic. Scrapping the traditional runway setting, Minkoff opted for a two-hour presentation which highlighted a series of vignettes to better capture and represent the needs, wardrobe and environment of the modern-day working woman. Models (one woman was actually pregnant) were accompanied by babies, youngsters, strollers and breast pumps, and dressed in versatile, on-the-go fashion pieces (think: billowy blouses, floral dresses, colourful leather shorts and over-the-shoulder handbags) as they took over a rainbow-themed playground set complete with a swing set, park benches and an ice cream stand.

Her modern, female-focused lens was also evident in the models’ nails thanks to a limited-edition press-on nails collab with imPRESS by KISS Nails, which *finally* dropped this month. “These are do-and-go nails. They’re a great lifestyle nail,” commented celebrity nail artist and KISS ambassador Gina Edwards while giving FASHION a sneak peek of the colourful digits backstage.

Quick, wallet-friendly and hassle-free (these press-ons use an adhesive layer, so no glue is required), the Rebecca Minkoff x imPRESS instant manicure collection comes in seven unique and eye-catching sets that vary in shape, design, length and finish. The best part? “You can mix and match. That’s what I love about them! You become your own artist without actually having to paint and do all the detail,” mused Edwards. Translation: press-on nails are officially the unsung heroes of at-home manicures now that nail salons are closed indefinitely due to COVID-19. And from chrome to gem-covered to negative space and beyond, accent nail options are a plenty. What’s more, each pack comes complete with an alcohol-soaked prep pad to help remove any oil from bare nails, a mini nail file for shape and nail length adjustments if desired, and a wood stick to push back cuticles. For a truly fool-proof application process, read Edwards’ helpful tips here.

From his velvet tuxedo jacket and sweeping ball gown at the 2019 Oscars to his figure-hugging crystal-encrusted jumpsuit paired with a brimmed hat at the Grammys this year, Billy Porter has become one of the most watched stars on the red carpet – his fluid and larger-than-life sartorial choices continuously spark discussions around identity and gender norms, and the same applies to his nails.

“My team has been doing his nails for big events for a while,” reveals CND’s co-founder Jan Arnold. “I love his approach because he’s like, ‘I’m a man, I love to wear skirts, but I like “boy” nails. Give me nails that are like armour.’ We usually do metallics, and we’ve also done pavé crystals on him.” Ultimately, one could easily say that the Broadway performer and screen actor has become a refreshing style trailblazer. “He’s the perfect kind of icon for how men can embrace and wear nail art because his nails never look wrong,” says Arnold. “They fit exactly the statement he’s making.”

Could Nail Art Be the Next Frontier of Gender-Neutral Beauty? https://fashionmagazine.com/beauty-grooming/nails/could-nail-art-be-the-next-frontier-of-gender-neutral-beauty/ Wed, 06 May 2020 18:16:09 +0000 https://fashionmagazine.com/?p=400835 For centuries, men have polished their nails to symbolize everything from social standing to rebellious indifference. Fast-forward to now and style-savvy dudes are embracing intricate manicures.

Since splitting from One Direction and emerging as a solo artist in 2017, Harry Styles has become somewhat of a poster child for eccentric men’s fashion in the world of mainstream pop music. (Think paisley prints, floral suits, sheer women’s blouses and costume jewellery.) The 26-year-old has also been using beauty—nail art in particular—to play with the notion of genderless style. While Styles may not be a nail art pioneer (after all, men have been wearing nail polish for ages), his penchant for two-toned, playful nail art has not gone unnoticed. These days, he joins the growing list of male celebrities, including the likes of Pete Davidson, Bad Bunny, Ansel Elgort, Jaden Smith and A$AP Rocky, who are using nail polish to amplify their personal style.

What do the aforementioned celebrities have in common? Other than the fact that they’re all entertainers, not a whole lot. They exist within different genres of music and even entirely different avenues of entertainment—and that’s the point. While nail polish has adorned the fingertips of famous artist types in the past (like Kurt Cobain, Iggy Pop, Marc Bolan and David Bowie), it used to be a symbol of a certain counterculture—be it grunge, punk or glam rock. Black nail polish in particular, and the subcultures in which it resided, symbolized a deviation from the norm.

men's nail art
Figures like Harry Styles and A$AP Rocky have brought men’s nail art back into the spotlight

But these days, with genderless fashion and beauty becoming the norm and a “no rules” approach to style cementing itself as the only—and perhaps final— style rule, do countercultures exist anymore? “The acceptance and freedom in men’s fashion has opened up a sense of creativity in styling, including the use of beauty as an accessory,” says Jan Arnold, co-founder and style director of CND, who suggests that nail art is the obvious next step in the world of gender-neutral style, following in the footsteps of unisex fashion and genderless skincare, hair care and makeup.

Ironically, although polished nails—from intricate designs to simple one- shade manicures—have long been seen as feminine, nail polish has actually been around since 3200 BCE, and back then, it was used by men. Babylonian warriors would paint their nails with kohl to intimidate their enemies. In ancient China, nail colour was used to symbolize social standing and class; bold shades, such as black and red, were reserved for royalty. But as we’ve seen with other facets of the fashion and beauty industries in the past, gender associations can, and often do, change over time. Pink wasn’t viewed as a feminine shade until the 1950s. Today, gender associations are becoming altogether obsolete.

Unsurprisingly, the fashion industry has welcomed the genderless nail art movement with open arms. From the kitschy manicures at Balenciaga’s Fall 2017 menswear show (created by fashion industry favourite Mei Kawajiri) to Marc Jacobs’s eye-catching nail art in the Givenchy Spring 2020 campaign, men wearing nail polish is gradually becoming more and more common in photo shoots and on runways. Rita Remark, global lead educator for Essie, has noticed the trend gaining traction backstage at fashion week, where she has painted identical nail art manicures on male and female models walking the runway for brands like WRKDEPT and Monse. “Nails walk the line between fashion and beauty, so genderless nail art has always just made sense to me,” she says.

Men’s nail art on runways and in fashion campaigns.

While some celebrities, like Styles, Elgort and Davidson, turn to nail polish to complete a look and express a previously untapped facet of their personal style, A$AP Rocky has used nail art to make statements unrelated to fashion. Following his release from prison in Sweden last year, the rapper was seen with the words “F*ck Off” painted on his nails (the nails on his middle fingers, to be precise).

Amsterdam-based nail artist Jessica Scholten, who works with A$AP Rocky, predicts that while the men who wear nail art now are still largely celebrities and artists, it will soon reach the masses—and has already started to—noting that the number of men who visit her salons (she is the owner of Amsterdam’s nail art concept salons, Lawerk) is climbing. “Nail art today is a form of personal expression,” says Scholten, “instead of the rebellious act it used to be.”

3200 BCE
According to an exhibit presented by CND called Tiny Canvases: The Art of Nails, the first known instance of nail polish was in ancient Babylon. As an intimidation tactic, Babylonian soldiers would paint their nails with kohl before going into battle.

600 BCE
In ancient China, certain nail colours, such as black, gold and red, were reserved for royalty—regardless of gender. Non-royals were only permitted to use pale shades, like soft pink, which was achieved with the use of rose petals, explains Gabriela Hernandez, a makeup historian and the founder of Bésame Cosmetics. Wearing the wrong colour was punishable by death.

500 BCE
Greek soldiers applied red colouring to their nails (and lips!) to prepare for battle.

1368
Wealthy Chinese noblemen and noblewomen would protect their fingernails with precious metals and jewel- encrusted nail coverings.

1400s
In preparation for battle, members of the Inca tribe of Peru used natural dyes to decorate their nails with drawings of eagles, symbolizing power and strength.

1800s
Well-groomed nails with a sheen to them became popular because they gave the appearance of good health, says Hernandez, so men would regularly get their nails buffed at the barbershop. “Ads for nail pomades would feature men, not women.”

1970s
The first-ever nail polish to be sold in stores (a red lacquer called “Cherries in the Snow” by Revlon) had been around for four decades, but the beauty product was marketed solely to women. In the 1970s, rockstars like David Bowie and Freddie Mercury took to wearing colour on their nails.

1980s
Glam metal bands, like Aerosmith and Mötley Crüe, paired shiny black nail polish with leather.

1990s
Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain was often photo- graphed wearing red nail polish (chipped, of course), challenging the status quo.

2010s
Celebrities like Johnny Depp and Seal have adopted nail polish as part of their signature looks, wearing bold shades of blue and green. In 2019, nail polish brand OPI released an ad called “Will you mani up?” that showcases men wearing lacquer and getting manicures.

If I were to say the words “press-on nails” to you, it’s likely that your brain would conjure up images of middle school slumber parties where you and your friends turned a living room into a beauty salon with temporary hair dyes, body stickers and the aforementioned press-on nails. But the school days staple is having a major resurgence during quarantine. With all of us staying indoors and nail salons shuttered until further notice, we’ve all had to turn our hands (sorry not sorry) to taking care of our own nails. From DIY manicures and pedicures, to removing gel polish, it’s given us a newfound appreciation for our local nail technician. But if you haven’t managed to perfect painting your own nails (myself included), press-on nails are a relatively quick and easy way to ‘cheat’ your way to a salon-worthy manicure.

In fact, even glam queen Ariana Grande is getting in on the action. Earlier this week, the Thank You, Next singer posted two images to stories of a set of press-on nails she had been gifted by a Los Angeles based nail artist with the handle @bettyinacherry. In one of the shots, Grande showed off her perfectly manicured hand, with the caption “u are a gift @bettyinacherry thank u.”

When applying press-on nails, be sure to properly fit each nail. Gina Edwards, celebrity nail artist and ambassador for Kiss Nails, says, “The best way to apply press-on nails is to apply the nails on your dominant hand first which makes it a little easier for application. Also, measure the nail from nail groove to nail groove without overlapping the skin.” Her top tip for a perfect end result? “Make sure you cleanse your natural nails before applying by removing oils and debris for better adhesion. Also make sure to size all ten nails and lay out in number order before applying. This ensures you choose the best fit for each nail.”

There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to application, too. Some sets require glue, whilst others use an adhesive layer to hold the nail in place. As for how either will treat your natural nails, Edwards explains, “There is no risk to your natural nails if you apply a press on with an adhesive layer, not glue. Glue nails may cause damage only if they are not removed properly.”

Speaking of removal, if your nails are still going strong but you’re ready for a new set, Edwards says, “If the adhesive is still holding well, don’t rip the nail off as that will damage the nails. You can use warm water and oil or add a little acetone under the nail. If your nails were applied with glue you need to remove with an acetone -based product and soak off for a minimum of 15-30 mins.” If you happen to lose one before you’re ready to take them all off, Edwards says, “For hygiene and optimal wear, its best to keep the nail off and reapply a new one,” adding that all KISS/imPRESS nails include ‘extras’ for mishaps and fallen nails for that very reason.

Here’s some of our favourite at-home press-on nail kits to try:

Your local Shopper’s/Rexall/pharmacy will also likely have an extensive selection of press-ons so be sure to visit the nail aisle on your next visit.

This Easter, we’re trading in the traditional itinerary to fête a home-based holiday. What to do With Your Gel Manicure Now That You’re in Quarantine https://fashionmagazine.com/beauty-grooming/nails/what-to-do-with-your-gel-manicure-now-that-youre-in-quarantine/ Thu, 02 Apr 2020 17:30:05 +0000 https://fashionmagazine.com/?p=397590 Pro-recommended DIY tips for when you can’t make it into a salon.

It’s easy to gush over the perks of a gel manicure…Two to three weeks of glossy, chip-free nails? Yes, please! But now that all non-essential businesses are closed during this self-isolation period, what on earth does one do with LED-cured lacquer that’s growing out — and with no follow-up nail salon visit in sight?

Here, two pro manicurists offer up tips on to how milk the life of your gel manicure for as long as humanly possible, plus *safe* DIY methods to effectively remove gel polish — without completely wrecking the health of your nails in the process.

Squash that urge to pick

When having to resort to taking nail matters into your own hands, the first at-home solution is likely to want to rip, pick or bite all ten gelled shells from your digits — which can actually take off layers of your natural nail bed underneath. So, we repeat, don’t resort to that DIY method. “As long as there’s no lifting [of the gel polish], let your nails grow and simply file down the lengths,” says CND brand ambassador Winnie Huang, who also encourages daily nail conditioning with a cuticle oil.

Go for some easy, do-at-home nail art

This grow-out period is also a fabulous time to try your own handiwork at some nail art. “I suggest you dab glittery polish lightly into the area where the product has grown out by the cuticle,” recommends Rita Remark, Essie’s global lead educator. “Because the glitter bits in the polish have texture, they’ll conceal the seam where the gel ends and your nail begins.”

Remove gel polish safely

Once you do start experiencing excessive chipping or lifting, the good news is that you can remove a gel manicure yourself with products that you likely already have around your house. “If you have a nail file, a cuticle pusher, acetone remover, tinfoil and cotton, you’re good to go!” says Remark.

First, gently file down the surface of your gel polish to remove shine, then saturate a cotton ball or pad with acetone and press it on top of the nail. Proceed with wrapping your cotton-adorned fingertip tightly with a square piece of tinfoil. Wait 15 minutes, then remove the tinfoil and cotton and lightly push away any leftover gel polish with the cuticle pusher.

Don’t have a cuticle pusher? “Try an orangewood stick,” says Remark. No cotton balls? “Cut paper towel into little squares.”

For more detailed instructions, Huang encourages gel lovers to watch easy-to-follow video tutorials, like these two:

Take care of those bare nails

“What is also important is what happens after removal,” says Huang. Apply cuticle oil afterwards to add hydration, and if nails are in need of some extra TLC, reach for a repairing treatment, like CND’s keratin and jojoba oil-infused RescueRXx.
