Social media influencers are the modern-day arbiters for what’s hot and what’s not. Whether that’s convincing you that you can’t live another day without a pair of adidas Sambas or Mikayla Nogueira’s L’Oréal mascara controversy had you racing to the drugstore to grab your own tube, the sway that content creators like Alix Earle, Glamzilla and Matilda Djerf have cannot be understated. They have huge followings — and the power to create hype that sells out products instantly.

RELATED: Should We Really Expect Honesty from Beauty Influencers?

But the tables have turned — if you’ve been on TikTok in recent months, you’ve surely seen “deinfluencing” videos on your “For You Page” where creators explain why they think you shouldn’t buy certain products. Here, we dive into the deinfluencing trend, how influencers can use it to their advantage, and what it might mean for the future of content creation.

What is deinfluencing?

Deinfluencing videos continue to go viral for doing the literal opposite of traditional influencer videos that promote fashion, beauty, wellness and home products. Instead, these posts try to convince viewers not to buy buzzy items, often while promoting more cautious spending habits.

@kayli.boyle def gonna be taken off a lot of PR lists after this🤠 #hairtok #skincare #makeup #deinfluencing ♬ original sound – kayli

The hashtag #deinfluencing has over 484 million views on TikTok and counting on videos cautioning people against buying products they felt didn’t live up to their expectations. Popular beauty goodies like the Makeup by Mario SurrealSkin foundation, wellness products like Bloom Nutrition’s Super Greens powder mix (you know the one that almost every morning routine or “get ready with me” video starts with), the omnipresent Stanley cup and the viral Zara bomber jacket are examples of goods that were rabidly popular — and now heavily deinfluenced.

Deinfluencing has sparked conversations about waste and overconsumption. The resounding message is this: Brands will continue to drop new releases, influencers will promote products (including ones they don’t truly love, but more on that in a bit), and you don’t need to buy into the hype every time.

@eliseeatsplants considering that the rare beauty blushes each last a lifetime, you may not need 6 of them #deinfluencing #makeup ♬ original sound – elise maria

“I didn’t realize how weird and abnormal [it is] to have 17 different blushes that are all the same colour,” says TikToker Elsie Maria in her de-influencing video about how normalized rabid consumerism is. “ I didn’t think about the long-term effects.”

A response to a looming recession

The prevalence and longevity of deinfluencing is also symbolic of the reality of a potential economic recession and suggests it’s a response to people being more aware of how they spend their money. According to the CBC, consumers and businesses are expecting a recession this year, and with rising inflation rates and cost of living, consumers are cutting back on spending.

In her video, TikToker Jenna Romano says, “in a recession, the ‘nice to have’ products and ‘need to have’ products become more distinguished.”

“This trend is great, especially during this time when we are about to enter a recession and many are searching for ways to decrease their discretionary spending,” Danica Nelson, a lifestyle and personal finance content creator and senior product marketing manager at Shopify, tells FASHION.

“Does one really need the Stanley bottle when you already have five perfectly functioning water bottles at home?” Nelson adds. (The answer, of course, would be no.)

What deinfluencing means for influencers and brands

The deinfluencing trend relates to discussions of authenticity and transparency between content creators and their audience. Not every new product actually deserves an audible gasp. People tend to build deeper connections with content creators who are relatable and honest, rather than those who always post positive reviews or share snapshots of their always-perfect lives, according to Nelson. “People tend to gravitate to creators that commit to being transparent and those that don’t solely focus on the highlights, butterflies, and rainbows of life,” says Nelson. Ultimately, authenticity is more on-trend than ever — and deinfluencing is a strategy that content creators can use to build trust with their audiences.

Deinfluencing actually provides highly valuable information to brands, and potentially presents new marketing opportunities. “It would be a gigantic missed opportunity if brands weren’t actively paying attention to their products being deinfluenced and criticized on social media.” It’s a blessing in disguise, because these videos are “valuable customer feedback and insight that companies would typically need to run costly and time-consuming research studies to get access to,” says Nelson.

In Nelson’s view, deinfluencing doesn’t signal the end of the influencer era, but rather an opportunity for consumers, influencers and brands to re-evaluate marketing and consumption habits. “In an age where almost everything is an ad and people are becoming more easily influenced by products and services they see advertised on social media, this deinfluencing trend is a refreshing perspective that encourages folks to see through the hype,” says Nelson.

After all, makeup expires. Trends come and go, and come back again (hello, rosettes). The pressure to keep up with the latest viral products is unrelenting and deinfluencing is a welcome reminder to be as intentional as ever with our purchases.

International Women’s Day is here, and what better way to to mark the occasion than by supporting women-owned brands?

With its origins as a socialist movement in the early 1900s, IWD is a celebration of the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. This year’s theme, “Break the Bias,” calls on us all to “imagine a gender equal world.” In Canada and internationally, this dream can feel out of reach. From the abortion ban in Texas to the crisis in Ukraine that threatens the rights of LGBTQ+ people, playing an active role to create “a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination,” per IWD, is more important than ever.

If your last time wearing Mary Jane shoes coincided with kindergarten graduation, let us get you up to speed on the season’s seen-everywhere shoe.

RELATED: Prepare to See Rosettes Everywhere

From New York all the way to Paris, you couldn’t blink without missing a Mary Jane moment. There was Coach’s heart-stamped heels, Emilia Wickstead’s metallic-meets-minimalist options, and Prada’s Western-influenced iterations coming in a kaleidoscope of zingy colour that popped with every look. Even Bally got the boys into a black patent version paired with languid suiting, making us question why we hadn’t thought of it as the most obvious choice for evening wear in the first place.

Soon, the street style elite followed suit, putting their own spin on the buzz-worthy style: pairing them with pristine white dress socks, delicately scrunched at the ankle; off-setting zany tights or trousers with a neutral pair; and leaning into its preppy reputation with long pleated skirts.

If you’re wondering whether the Mary Jane resurgence has reached the mainstream, here’s the good news: this season’s offering pretty much spans the entire style spectrum. From teetering patent platforms to velvety ballet flats and T-strapped oxfords with chunky, punk-happy soles, there’s truly a pair for everyone. Read on for 19 of our favourite pairs of Mary Jane shoes.

In the fall of 2019, I attended a panel discussion hosted by the British Fashion Council on the last day of London Fashion Week (LFW). Centred on the topic of sustainability and fashion, it included designer Phoebe English; model and environmental activist Arizona Muse; and Bel Jacobs, a former fashion editor who now works with the environmental protest group Extinction Rebellion. I was eager to hear what the informed and illustrious speakers had to say about how the industry can do its part by being more sustainably minded. (I’ve started using this phrase instead of the word “sustainable” since success is hard to measure or even define.)

RELATED: Feeling Existential Dread Because of Climate Change? Here’s What You Can Do

I listened patiently while the usual factoids were listed off. You know the ones — like the 2018 study stating that the fashion industry contributes to around 10 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions. But when Jacobs, in an effort to stop the promotion of wasteful practices, called for an end to LFWs, it gave me pause, prompting me to raise my hand during the Q&A period and ask “Are there any plans to call for a boycott of the Super Bowl?”

My query seemed to catch some of the panellists off guard, and some anger churned within me when it was essentially deflected and redirected back to the evils of the fashion industry. When talking about my feelings post-event with others who weren’t in attendance, I was occasionally met with churlish astonishment that I got this upset over the fact that fashion seems to bear the brunt of our climate crisis activism when the sports industry, for example, is supremely environmentally damaging as well. Or, folks were gobsmacked that they hadn’t thought much about the inconsistency at all.

It’s easy to see why that is: It’s a generally unpopular observation. Since the sustainability conversation is anchored by alarming statistics, here’s one for your consideration: As of this writing, Google Trends reported that searches for “sustainability fashion” happen nearly five times more frequently than searches for “sustainability sports” — and that’s just one industry other than fashion that you could choose. There’s also entertainment (which was meagre by comparison, with one twelfth of the search power), automotive and travel, to name a few. The variety of climate-crisis villains is vast, yet the outrage directed toward them is palpably sparser.

I’m galled by this discrepancy because not only am I a “fashion person” — via both vocation and a personal investment in vestiary self-expression since childhood — but my interest in the concept of sustainability and design has made me realize that intersectionality and scope-broadening are important. To put it another way, I’m weary of standing outside a house that’s on fire (the earth, in this case) and focusing wholly on one method of putting it out when there are plenty at our disposal.

When I hear a statistic like the aforementioned about the fashion industry’s emissions, it makes me wonder: What’s the breakdown when it comes to garments crafted by someone like Phoebe English versus those by a company like Shein? Or, to the point of this story, are we going to continue pretending that this number doesn’t include the creation of sports gear for both players and fans? And what about uniforms for fast-food employees and medical scrubs? If all apparel falls under the category “fashion,” why is the fashion industry solely taking the blame?

And where are the venomous TikToks — an all-too-common form of commentary lobbed at the great big “fashion bogeyperson” on the daily — about the tens of millions of meat products sold at sporting events every season when we know that a study released last year found that 60 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture? (I can’t recall a time I was given a red hot — let alone asked to pay an exorbitant price for one — during LFW, FWIW.)

Unlike with fashion events, at any given moment of the day across the entire world, sports are being played both professionally and at an amateur level. Players need uniforms, and spectators are buying everything from food to foam fingers. On top of that, consider that for every championship game played, clothing and other paraphernalia are created with the expectation that one team is going to win.

What happens to the losing team’s commodities? The website Mental Floss attempted to answer this question in a story that includes a staggering stat about the 2007 Super Bowl: “Based on strong sales after the Chicago Bears’s 2007 NFC Championship win…Sports Authority printed more than 15,000 shirts proclaiming a Bears Super Bowl victory well before the game even started. And then the Colts beat the Bears, 29–17.” After reading the entire article, though, I came away from it feeling like we’re all losers here because what follows these lines is a photo of a group of smiling children wearing much-too-large sports jerseys that were donated to them by the evangelical Christian organization World Vision, which previously facilitated the distribution of unused products from suppliers to communities in need around the world.

Now, you’ve likely heard of markets and landfills, particularly in the Global South, that are choked with garment and accessories castoffs from countries like Canada and the United States. I see it posted about vigorously alongside calls to reframe our consumption of fashion goods. But, to date, I have never seen this reality dissected by way of a cleverly designed infographic social post with regard to sports swag or the promotional spoils that come with blockbuster movies, the latest Netflix releases or concert tours. That photo truly crystallized what I’ve been feeling this entire time when it comes to where we lay the blame of waste as well as what we do with it.

I can only speculate as to why this compartmentalizing, or sheer, wilful ignorance, is a reality. Part of my supposition comes from knowing that fashion’s reputation as an allegedly protective domain for women and members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community makes it an easy target for undue scrutiny in the distressingly bigoted world we live in.

It’s also seen as frivolous — by many people for multiple reasons — despite what a lot of us know about its ability to help us manifest our inner selves to the world or unite us by community or subculture. And perhaps most importantly, sports and entertainment — specifically the kind that requires energy-sucking productions and rampant global travel — are industries that have been designed to alleviate our daily dismay. We don’t think about our anxiety or depression when we’re watching “our team” win a game. Such distractions are salves for the trials and tribulations of the human condition.

But fashion, especially nowadays, is increasingly an echo chamber and outlet for our existential angst. Whether it’s Balenciaga’s snow-covered runways or the brands that launch on the daily touting a new miracle textile du jour, the industry has unfortunately attempted to right wrongs by creating more hype and more products. But at the very least, there’s some self- — and communal — awareness about how much needs to change in this sphere; I cannot say the same for the Super Bowl.

February is Black History Month. At FASHION, we celebrate diversity all year, but we’d like to take this opportunity to specifically highlight the exceptional talent of Black designers, who still face barriers to entrymarginalization and a lack of representation in the world of fashion.

It’s been more than two years since protests against policy brutality that escalated across the U.S. and around the world triggered change across many industries, including fashion. In May 2020, Aurora James founded the 15 Percent Pledge, calling on retailers to pledge 15 percent of shelf space to Black-owned businesses. A month after that, notable Canadian designer George Sully launched the platform Black Designers of Canada to feature and celebrate Black talent across the country.

And while we witnessed the overwhelming support of Black businesses at the height of the summer of 2020, our support must extend beyond a movement (or a month, for that matter). You’re probably familiar with a few of Canada’s renowned fashion figures, such as Kirk Pickersgill of Greta Constantine, Aurora James of Brother Vellies and Byron and Dexter Peart of Goodee (and formerly Want Les Essentiels), but there are myriad up-and-coming creatives that also deserve the spotlight. Here are some of our favourite Black Canadian designers to shop all year round.

It’s February, friends, and depending on where you are in the world, that might mean you’re staring down the final frigid stretch of a dark, long winter. Our skin is dry, our pant hems are wet, our wallets are hurting because of holiday spending and inflation. If you’re feeling the cold weather blues, we have some shopping-related news that might add a little sparkle to your day: Mejuri, the female-founded, direct-to-consumer jewellery brand, is having its first-ever site-wide sale on diamonds. As in, literally no exceptions. Frost yourself with abandon!

Mejuri’s Diamond Week sale, on now until February 7, offers shoppers 15 percent off all diamond jewellery, including some new styles released just in time for the sale. Bonus: You’ll be supporting a Canadian jewellery brand while you build your accessories wardrobe.

Mejuri diamonds are a-plenty, so to help you narrow down your choices, we’ve rounded up 10 items that will be right at home in a jewellery capsule collection, including classic diamond stud earrings, a chic signet pinky ring and a pavé bracelet you can wear every day. Grab your cream-coloured cashmere, it’s officially #vanillagirl winter. All about soft, cozy looks, the vanilla girl wraps herself in lush neutrals, likes to cuddle up in her ivory silk pyjamas and takes vanilla santal-scented bubble baths. As an extension of the “clean girl” aesthetic and “sad beige” trend, the vanilla girl is all about channelling the scent, taste, colour and texture of vanilla. She’s like the little sister of the “coastal grandmother” — more ecru knits, fewer stripes and boat totes. On TikTok, the #vanillagirl hashtag has amassed over 330 million views, while Google searches for “vanilla girl” had increased by 78% at the end of 2022, according to clothing brand Pour Moi.

Remember: This TikTok-approved niche aesthetic can be recreated by anyone — all you need is a comfy cable-knit sweater, fuzzy accessories and a warm vanilla scent to spritz. (And maybe a stain removal pen because of all that light-coloured fabric.)

Canada and cold go hand in hand so it’s no surprise that Canadian companies are among some of the coolest when it comes to coats. In a country where the temperature dips from October to April, keeping outerwear fresh, fashionable and functional is a must.

Look to the brand Luxton when it comes to refreshing an old-school outerwear silhouette. The Toronto-based label has officially rebranded the one-piece snowsuit into a veritable fashion item, thanks to its sleek (seriously, it’s not even remotely bulky) quilted version. The jumpsuit hits the utility trend spot-on but takes it from runway to real Canadian way thanks to a vegan down filling.

Looking to add some colour to your life? Vibrant coats, like a royal blue look from Quartz Co.’s collaboration with CAFA winner Marie-Ève Lecavalier or a soft-lilac jacket from Canada Goose, will ensure you stand out in a sea of black outerwear and brighten up long, dreary Canadian winter days.

Whether you’re looking for a textured, cropped shearling or a dramatic floor-length statement coat à la Nicole Kidman in the The Undoing, there’s a winter warmer for every wardrobe. Below, check out our favourite Canadian coats to help see you through the winter season in style.

Winter has officially arrived (sorry), but with it comes winter sports season — and winter sports dressing! Whether you’ll be dashing through Black Diamond slopes or prefer a more après-ski approach to the chilly season by sipping mulled wine in front of a crackling fire, your outfit should be as eye-catching as the scenic snow-capped landscape. Naturally, bold patterns and vibrant colours should find a way into your skiwear collection, while retro silhouettes add a stylish flair to the often utilitarian looks of high-performance sports gear.

For retro inspiration, look to Princess Diana’s style from the ’90s and Lady Gaga in House of Gucci. The best part? You can always source vintage pieces to get the nostalgic look without spending a fortune.

From designer skiwear to puffer-like boots, take in the fresh winter air (or the cozy vibes of the ski chalet) with the best skiwear and winter sports gear, below.

Look, you’re busy. Between festive parties with friends, your office Secret Santa and going back home for the holidays, you need to think smarter—not harder—when it comes to your shopping this year. Did you know that you can get all of your gifts at the same place you stock up on your toothpaste, cold medications and late-night munchies? Shoppers Drug Mart is your one-stop-shop for gifts for everyone from your super-picky best friend to your mom who swears she doesn’t need anything.

And the best part? You’ll earn PC Optimum points with every purchase—an extra-special gift for yourself (and your wallet). Plus, you can get free delivery on all orders over $50.

We asked Shoppers Beauty Pro Chanel Cruz to share her must-have holiday gift sets (which are sure to sell out fast). Get ‘em before they’re gone!

The recipe for #NoFilter skin

Kylie Skin Hydrate + Glow Mini Set, $58

A four-step skincare routine, created by Kylie Jenner herself, in one Instagram-worthy package? We’re listening. “Skincare sets are great gifting options for those looking to get glowing skin,” says Cruz. This set of minis, exclusive to Shoppers Drug Mart, comes with a face mask, face moisturizer, eye cream and coconut body lotion that all work together to give you glowing, plump and moisturized skin on the go. Is your BFF going on a last-minute winter getaway to Cabo? She can just throw these in her carry-on and breeze through security, and when she lands at her destination, she’ll look like she just got a two-hour facial. A truly priceless gift. Thank us later!

The pop star-approved fragrance

Ariana Grande Cloud Gift Set, $82

*Out of stock online, but still available in store

“It’s my go-to fragrance,” says Cruz of the intoxicating mix of lavender blossom, juicy pear, creamy coconut, vanilla orchid and musk. “This set comes with a travel-size bottle that’s perfect for popping into your purse on those days where you’re racing to an after-work holiday event.” How cute is the retro cassette packaging that stylishly holds the two perfumes and a shower gel? And given that a full size of the Cloud eau de parfum is $78, this gift set is a steal. Fair warning to the receiver: people will stop you on the street and ask what perfume you’re wearing. It’s up to you whether you’d like to keep it a secret.

The moisture-boosting essential

Drunk Elephant Welcome to Lala Land, $84

This popular skincare brand—which is probably all over your TikTok For You page—just launched its new Lala Retro whipped moisturizer gift set, and it’s worth a spot under the tree. You’ll get a full and a travel size of this repairing and replenishing cream that’s infused with six rare, wild-harvested oils, a plant ceramide complex and omega acids. Translation: Your skin will be able to retain moisture for longer and be protected against environmental stressors. Who doesn’t want that?

The secret to perfect holiday hair

Quo Beauty 1” Ceramic Straightener, $37.99

With holiday parties in full swing, give the gift of fabulous hair with the high-performance 1” Ceramic Straightener from Quo Beauty. This straightener is made with rose gold ceramic technology that creates silky smooth, frizz-free, and high-shine results. Friends and loved ones with fully booked social calendars will be eternally grateful.

The self-care starter pack

Air and Water Holiday Bliss 7-Piece Beauty Luxuries Robe Set, $47

Nothing says “’Tis the season to ignore all of my responsibilities, put my phone on airplane mode and bury myself under the comforter” more than this luxurious set. It comes with a fluffy hotel-style robe, three rich body butters and two nourishing hand creams (a.k.a. everything you need for a night of rest, relaxation and Real Housewives). “This is the perfect set for you or someone on your list who needs the gift of self-care during this busy season,” says Cruz. With scents like Rosé Champagne, Wild Vanilla, Peony Bouquet and Rosé Cake, each lotion is more delicious-smelling than the next. Bonus tip: you can even divide them up among your friends for their stockings.

There is no shortage of homegrown talent in Canada — especially when it comes to jewellery brands. Every year, the Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards have highlighted some of the immensely talented Canadian designers. And this year was no different. After three years of cancelled or postponed ceremonies, this year’s gala felt extra special.

Included in our list of Canadian jewellery brands are industry veterans like Biko and Ecksand, newcomers like Steff Eleoff and Cyntia Miglio, and CAFA winner, Melanie Auld Jewellery. Given the small-scale production among many of our favourite local brands, there’s a focus on sustainability as well as the use of recycled material. Just look to Vancouver-based Wolf Circus, which uses recycled silver and bronze throughout its collections.

Whether you’re looking for your next pair of statement earrings or hunting for a piece that will one day become an heirloom, here are 30 Canadian jewellery brands you should check out.

Step aside, Very Peri, there’s a romantic new hue in town. Pantone has announced the 2023 Colour of the Year, Viva Magenta, and while the name sounds sort of obvious (hello, Barbiecore!), this specific shade of pink is actually quite distinct. Sitting somewhere between red and fuchsia, Viva Magenta is bold but decidedly muted compared to the saturated, nearly neon pink seen on the Valentino fall/winter 2022 runway, for example.

According to the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, the new Colour of the Year is “inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

You know that line in Mean Girls “I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and flip flops, so I bought army pants and flip flops”? Despite my urge to resist the influence of the Kardashian-Jenners and their oh-so-well-oiled marketing machine, I sometimes find myself feeling that way about Kendall Jenner’s outfits. From her penchant for cool prints to her embrace of kooky knitwear, Kendall’s style of late (well, perhaps more accurately, her stylist) is good. One recent accessory pairing that had the internet in an absolute froth came in early fall when the model attended a daytime tennis event wearing mega-sized gold teardrop earrings and a baseball cap. (Cue the above Mean Girls-inspired quote.) The juxtaposition of the ladylike earrings with the sporty hat was unexpected, while the large size of the earring’s elegant silhouette bordered on absurd. It was a real chef’s kiss style moment that naturally led me down a TikTok rabbit hole, feverishly searching “Bottega Veneta Drop earrings dupes.”

Big, bulbous and curling around the ear like a sleeping snail, Kendall’s mammoth earrings first appeared on the Bottega Veneta fall 2022 ready-to-wear runway in Milan where then-new creative director Mathieu Blazy showed trompe l’oeil denim made entirely of buttery leather, the brand’s signature woven leather intrecciato iterated in high shaft boots, and Muppet-ready faux fur wedge loafers.

Alas, the Bottega Veneta Drop earrings quickly sold out in both gold and silver but the desire to replicate Kendall’s look is going strong. Luckily, there are alternatives out there that achieve the same statement-making look and are in stock now (plus, blessedly, most are far less painful on the wallet than the luxury iteration which can range from $910 to $1,510, depending on the size). Here, we tracked down seven chic Bottega Veneta Drop earrings dupes of various sizes to wear while you wait for the real thing. Just add a baseball cap.

Plush textures like shearling and faux fur have been winter staples for years, but now they’re popping up everywhere, from furry outerwear to fuzzy trapper hats. We first noticed “yeti couture” on the fall/winter 2022 runways of designers such as GCDS, Saint Laurent and Michael Kors, while on the streets, style stars like Rihanna have been sporting fuzzy bucket hats since last year. And we understand why — not only do these fun, furry accessories keep you warm, they also make excellent statement pieces that will lift your spirits during often long and dreadful winters.

Let your knits hang out in your closet a little longer and try a ultra-glossy, high-shine look instead. Look to brands like Blumarine, Givenchy and Courrèges, who all decided that we need more drama in wardrobes that can get a little drab during the colder months. An extension of the punk aesthetic that’s been popular lately and the trend cycle returning back to the 2010s, we’re parting with muted looks and embracing high-voltage varnish.

The allure of the lustrous finish is undeniable, but only if you’re prepared for it. If going full throttle in head to toe patent leather feels too bold or intimidating, start slowly by incorporating the sleek texture into your accessories — think handbags, shoes, and hair accoutrements. The more adventurous can amp up your look with metallic leather pieces that really make a statement.

Still not sure how to wear this trend? Look to none other than Zendaya, who look masterfully effortless in Ferragamo’s latest collection, designed by the brand’s new creative director, Maximillian Davis.

Bretman Rock’s sense of style is quite simple: he doesn’t have one. Sure, the social media phenomenon attends runway shows, walks red carpets and appears on the cover of magazines. But when it comes down to it, his taste in fashion, like pretty much every other part of his identity, is impossible to categorize. And that makes it all the more fun.

The Hawaii-based content creator, reality TV star, and newly-minted memoir author has crafted his pop-culture presence around doing all things without limitations — and that includes getting dressed. At the start of our video call, the multi-hyphenate reminds me yet again of his flare for fluidity by playfully reciting a now-famous catchphrase. “I am very much a singer, songwriter, actor, actress, activist and a scientist on the side,” he says. “But because I wear so many hats per se, I need a lot of hats.”

bretman rock klarna shoot
Photography courtesy of Klarna

Hence his fashion direction — or lack thereof. “I don’t really have a sense of style because my sense of style is kind of like all the hats I wear. It’s just dependent on what I feel like I’m doing that day. I feel like because I am non-binary, it gives me the power to play with not only, ‘What am I wearing today?’ but, ‘What gender am I going to pull from today?’”

As we chat, he’s perched in a retro orange chair resembling a pod, wearing cozy blue pyjamas with his hair tied up in space buns. “I think [people put] too much pressure on clothes all the time,” he tells me. But in Bretman Rock’s world, getting dressed is nothing but a delight. He will take an objectively unpleasant wardrobe mishap and make it look intentional. He bundles up in Hawaiian weather for the sole sake of channelling a Christmas movie scene. At this point, the Filipino influencer is an outfit-picking expert. And as the global ambassador of the shopping and payments service Klarna, he’s further refined those skills. Below, Bretman Rock shares his advice for developing an out-of-the-box sense of style.

Tip #1: Remember that trends are not always your friends

“My biggest fashion regret is always following trends, because I do not like to feel basic. I’m too much of a Leo. I feel like you can only really find your sense of style when you try not to wear what everybody else is wearing and focus on what you really want to wear. Wear whatever makes you comfortable. I mean, I’m wearing space buns in a literal cocoon right now. Just don’t be basic.”

Tip #2: Make getting dressed an occasion, even if you’re wearing sweatpants

“I feel like people expect me to always be dressed up. But that’s just my fashion week persona. That is not me. When I’m home, I’m literally just in sweats. If anything, I would rather be naked sometimes.

“In Hawaii, our fall and winter are just rainy days — and I love dressing up for a rainy day. I don’t think there’s anything I love dressing up for more. I just love being so dramatic. Like, heating up my hot chocolate, playing music and pretending that it’s freezing outside and I’m being snowed in. I literally got mittens and a furry hat just for that.”

Bretman Rock
Photography courtesy of Klarna

Tip #3: Love your outfit, even when it doesn’t love you back

“The other day when I was at a Kehlani concert, I was wearing Acne Studios snakeskin yellow leather pants, and [the back side ripped]. I was sweating so much, and the sweat and the leather were sticking together, which is the worst feeling ever. It stretched it so much that [the whole butt tore].

“I brought with me like four safety pins, and that’s what I used to keep my pants closed. But it’s a Kehlani concert, and I will be twerking. So I just kept twerking all the pins off. At that point, the rip had gone all the way down to my thigh, and there was just no saving it. I was like, let’s wrap the night up. Let’s go home girl.

“But I would say wardrobe malfunctions happen for a reason. Because if my pants didn’t break, I might not have gotten the attention that I wanted from the really hot man who said hi to me that night. It was really fate. So, embrace the malfunction. You can just say, ‘I meant for that to happen.’”

Bretman Rock
Photography courtesy of Klarna

Tip #4: Ignore the labels — literally

“Labels don’t ever really matter. Regardless of if it’s a high-end brand or not, or if it’s woman’s clothing or men’s clothing, I feel like labels are so outdated. It’d be really cool to see clothes with no labels one of these days. So when you go shopping, you don’t have to go to only the men’s or women’s section. Go to all the sections, because they’re just clothes at the end of the day. [People put] too much pressure on clothes all the time. This unisex era that we’re going through? I think it’s the right path.”

Bretman Rock
Photography courtesy of Klarna

Tip #5: Choose quality over quantity

“When shopping online, first of all, try your best to not do any fast fashion. [Instead, invest in one good quality piece.] With Klarna, if you can’t pay for it now, pay for it later. To save more money, compare prices on different websites before you buy. People don’t think I do this, but I literally check every website. Because I hate when I buy something and then I see it at Saks or Nordstrom for cheaper than I got it. So check everywhere before you buy, because it’s such a commitment.”

October has arrived, which means it’s officially time to think about Halloween. While Tiktok’s has been reeling off Halloween costume ideas since August (back off, TikTok!), you’re not alone if you’ve only started to ideate your look. But where to begin?

According to Google, last year’s most popular Halloween costumes were inspired by Squid Game, clowns and Harley Quinn. More fashionable choices like cowboy or cowgirl, Cruella de Vil and characters from Euphoria also trended. Meanwhile, this year promises to be big for Shania Twain, Barbie and Hocus Pocus. So what will you dress up as this spooky season?

If you’re looking for the Halloween costume ideas to make you stand out from the crowd, we got you! Scroll down for five fashionable costumes worth trying this year — plus, stylish finds to help you get the looks.

Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell

The fashion landscape would look very different without OG supermodels (and best friends) Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. The pair had MANY memorable looks, including their ensembles at the London Fashion Week Designer of the Year Awards in 1991. Naomi’s full Vivienne Westwood lewk is particularly worthy of a Halloween redo.

Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman

Every generation has its Selina Kyle. For us, it’s none other than Zoë Kravitz. Although a classic catsuit might be an obvious choice, the 2022 version of The Batman included many drool-worthy looks, including her leather-trench ensemble (one of the earliest costumes revealed to the public during the production). All you need for this modern femme-fatale Halloween costume is a shiny trench, fishnet stockings, lace-up boots and, most importantly, kohl eyeliner.

Harry Styles

Singer (and now actor) Harry Styles’ world tour wardrobe, largely designed by Alessandro Michele of Gucci, brought metallics, flared pants and all sorts of playfulness to the stage. For one of his Coachella performances, Styles hopped on the Barbiecore trend by donning a monotone pink ensemble, including a metallic two-piece set and a shaggy faux-fur jacket. Of course, he completed the look with painted nails and his collection of conspicuous tattoos. It’s easily one of the best Halloween costume ideas of the year.

Drea and Eleanor from Do Revenge

One of the latest hit films by Netflix, Do Revenge features a pastel-hued wardrobe that’s made quite the impact on its audience. Costume designer Alana Morshead was inspired by South Korean school uniforms and created a candy-coloured world that will easily become the 2022 version of Heathers and Clueless. The best part? You can dress up with all of your friends for an easy group costume that has preppy flair.

Rihanna at Gucci Fall 2022

No one does fashion quite like Rihanna. The singer turns out look after look and her now-iconic maternity style basically broke the internet as fans eagerly waited to find out what she’d wear next. Why not recreate one of the most memorable ensembles, worn to the Gucci Fall 2022 show in Milan? The perk: It’s an easy Halloween costume if you’re expecting.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when beauty, fashion and lifestyle brands partner with charities to spread awareness and fundraise for life-saving breast cancer research. Often, these efforts involve donation campaigns and dedicated products — typically in varying shades of pink.

This year, Estée Lauder Companies continues its breast-cancer awareness campaign with themed skincare, makeup and fragrance from an extensive list of brands (such as Estée Lauder, La Mer and Jo Malone London), with a percentage of proceeds dedicated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Several fashion labels — from Jimmy Choo to David Yurman — are also participating in fundraising efforts.

When I first saw on Instagram that Samsung would be launching smart flip phones, I felt instantly nostalgic. In the early aughts, I was obsessed with the pocket-sized gadgets. I remember begging my parents for a candy-coloured Sharp flip phone after seeing some of my Grade 5 classmates carrying their new phones decked out in charms, rhinestones and other personalizations.

As an adult, the idea of finally owning a flip phone without compromising on function is exciting. So to celebrate the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 launch in August, I’ve spent the past week test driving the newly improved device to see what all the fuss is about.

First impressions

The sophisticated metal exterior of my phone features the brand’s signature Bora Purple. It happens to be one of this year’s hottest colours on runways and in design, making a strong case for visual appeal. If purple is not your thing, there are other shades to choose from: Blue, Graphite, and Pink Gold.

The phone is also compact. Gripping a regular-sized smartphone sometimes leaves me with sore fingers, but this model feels sleek and easy to handle. Due to my love for tiny purses (thanks, Lizzo and Jacquemus), I often have my phone in my hand, but the (roughly) three-inch Flip4 solves that problem.

Once I flip the phone open, it reveals a seamless 6.7-inch screen with a clear display. There’s a small dip in the middle of the screen where it folds, which could bother some people, but the screen can reportedly withstand over 200,000 folds.

As part of Samsung’s sustainability initiative, the device is made with repurposed fishing nets, or ghost nets, that would otherwise end up in the ocean.

That cover screen, though

One of the coolest features of the Galaxy Z Flip4 is its cover screen. An improvement from previous models, the updated 1.9-inch cover screen means I can respond to notifications, check the weather and make payments without flipping open the phone. It’s also a nice feature when I’m spending time with loved ones. I can still be notified of any important information without picking up my phone , and can easily return to my conversations.

The customization of it all

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is all about personalization, so the brand has released bespoke editions so anyone can mix and match the colours of the exteriors and the frame. It’s the perfect way to make your phone your own, especially if you prefer traditional hues over pastels.

I also love that you can customize your cover screen with a variety of clock styles, avatars and even gifs. At first, I went for the adorable blue “monster” that reminded me of Susuwatari, the blobs from My Neighbour Totoro. Later in the week, I swapped to a photo of me and my friends.

Quick Shot and other camera features

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 has a “Quick Shot” function, which means I can take photos without opening up the phone. With just a click of the side button, the cover screen shows me a front view of the camera. Not only is this feature handy when I want to do a quick fit check, but it also allows me to snap a selfie by waving to the camera (although it doesn’t always work).

What’s more, the main camera features “Flex” mode so I can capture content hands-free. For content creators, solo travellers or people who enjoy taking group photos without relying on strangers, the Flip4 acts as its own tripod. Though I’m not used to the colour grading and sharpness of photos taken with this camera in comparison to the other devices I’ve used, the clearness of image quality when zoomed in (10x at maximum) is something I appreciate.

Final thoughts

After a week of taking the phone with me wherever I go (albeit as a second device), I see the appeal that first attracted me to the innovative phone. I keep reaching for the Galaxy Z Flip4 to check my notifications, look at my calendar and take photos with my friends throughout the week. Although I’m not ready to convert to Android for every aspect of my life, I can certainly see the benefits to this neat, compact device. Bonus point: It makes a great conversation starter, turning me into the most popular person wherever I go. I’m already on my way to converting the people around me to make the “flip.”
