Lizzo is a bona fide style icon. Since she came onto the scene, the “Good As Hell” singer has never been one to shy away from innovative fashion statements, especially when the ensemble involves bearing some skin. Her most recent head-turning look was just this week, when the star stepped out in a crystal see-through dress. The glistening, sheer purple outfit is reminiscent of the famous Swarovski crystal gown that Rihanna sported to the 2014 CFDA awards — even still, it is so uniquely Lizzo. The fashion moment has (understandably) been the topic of social media praise since the first snaps hit the internet. To her fans, Lizzo’s ability to consistently turn these types of risqué looks is a testament to her unshakable self-love. Now, she’s working to help others achieve the same self-confidence. Earlier this year, the singer announced her partnership with the Dove Self-Esteem Project, which aims to address confidence issues resulting from social media use.

Part of what makes Lizzo so great is that her aura of confidence is contagious. From her lyrics of self-assurance to her refreshingly candid social media presence, she seems to have it all together. But this has not always been the case. “My self-love journey was literally for survival,” she says. Since she began to gain popularity within the notoriously critical entertainment industry, Lizzo has become an advocate for body acceptance — not out of desire, but out of necessity — in response to the fatphobia she’s often received. “I thought, ‘If I’m going to continue living in this body, I have to find a way to like myself.’” And that she did. The star has become synonymous with the concept of self-love, and now she wants to help young people struggling to attain it.

Lizzo’s partnership with the Dove Self-Esteem Project addresses how social media can worsen our feelings of self-worth. A key part of the initiative is The Selfie Talk, a guide for parents and teachers wanting to discuss digital photo altering and unrealistic beauty standards with kids and teens. One of the tools available for download is Dove’s Confidence Kit, a self-esteem resource written by experts in the field designed to help parents and teachers navigate these difficult conversations. The kit was developed as a result of shocking survey findings — like the fact that by the age of 13, 80 per cent of Canadian girls have downloaded a filter or used an app to change the way they look in photos, or that 37 per cent of girls between ages 10 and 17 say they don’t feel confident posting a picture of themselves without editing it first.

“It was much easier before Instagram and TikTok,” says Lizzo. “My heart goes out to young people growing up in a world that’s constantly showing them who they should be.” The singer notes that trends in women’s body types have fluctuated through the decades — and this contributes to falling self-confidence. “Women’s bodies have always been seen as a trend, and this is inherently an issue. It’s so important to find love and acceptance within ourselves, because then no matter what movement or trend comes along, we know that we’re good.”

As for Lizzo’s role in changing the conversation, she’s ready to move past talking about her appearance. “My body has been politicized since I stepped onto the scene wearing leotards. It was shocking to see in 2015, but now you all know what it looks like. You’ve seen it naked, in couture and at the Met Gala. Let’s stop talking about it and normalize bodies just existing.”

As the seasons change, so too do our curls. The unforgiving nature of the Canadian winter means taking refuge inside our dry, heated homes and putting our curls (which spend the season fighting the friction of wintry accessories from toques to on-trend balaclavas) up into a protective style. The result? Dehydrated hair in desperate need of extra attention in the form of a restorative hair mask.

Much like clothing is seasonally swapped in and out, your hair products should also rotate to match the outdoor environment. Elisha Gotha, owner of acclaimed Toronto curly hair salon The Curl Lounge, explains that the use of hair masks is particularly beneficial for curly hair due to its fragility, in comparison to other hair types. “We have a lot of natural broken bonds in our hair, which on a molecular level means that we have a lot of twists and turns that can cause more breakage,” says Gotha.

In such a vast natural hair market, curly customers are spoiled for choice. To narrow down the search for a winter-ready mask, Gotha suggests avoiding products largely composed of heavier oils (think shea butter, castor oil and coconut oil) which can create product build-up and prevent hydrating ingredients from penetrating the hair. One word you do want to seek out? Hydration.

Below, find the best hair masks for curly and natural hair to lean on this winter.

Holy Curls Curl Mask

Founded across the pond in London, England, Holy Curls is a cruelty-free brand all about empowering women to embrace their curly hair — and with it comes a restorative baobab and shea-rich 15-minute curl mask. The mantra on the product label? “Flux the flow. Feel the vibe. Take it slow. Do it right. Because this is a moment, not a routine. It’s downtime. It’s your time. It’s me time.” We heard that! P.S. The brand is newly available at Detox Market Canada.

Everist The Deep Conditioning Concentrate

Canadian zero-waste hair and body brand Everist just dropped a plant-based deep conditioning concentrate that curls will love. Its major focus? You guessed it, hydration. The 100ml tube is packed with pumpkin seed oil and more than 20% aloe vera to back up its smoothing and detangling properties — all without harmful ingredients like parabens, silicones and synthetic fragrances. It can be used as a daily hair conditioner or left on for 15 minutes to really penetrate the hair as a deep treatment mask.

The Potion Studio Confident Crown Conditioner

In all honesty, any hair product named “Confident Crown” sounds good to us already, but this conditioner from The Potion Studio walks the walk, too. Formulated with wheat protein, mango butter, and organic coconut oil, this product can double as a deep conditioner to moisturize and smooth all curls and coils — because founder Aziza El Wanni believes in helping curly-haired customers simplify their hair routines. If that weren’t enough, did we mention it’s vegan?

While hydration is key during these icy months, it’s also important to protect our textured tresses. Gotha’s top pick? Its patented technology helps reform your hair and the broken bonds we naturally have as curly girls,” she says. This treatment will help strengthen hair to withstand even the toughest winter accessories and protective styles.

Innersense Hydrating Hair Masque

When using this mask by Innersense, less is more. “It doesn’t have a lot of water content, and it’s very concentrated. A little goes a long way and it’s activated by the water that’s already in your hair,” explains Gotha. Packed with the right balance of nourishing nutrients and hydrating oils, Innersense skips out on damaging toxins to give you an organic, clean concoction of hydration in a bottle.

TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask

Oh, honey. If you’re in search of a budget-friendly treatment mask, Gotha recommends looking no further than TGIN’S Honey Miracle Hair Mask. “While it does contain some olive oil, the other ingredients are simple and it doesn’t have any damaging or filler ingredients,” says Gotha — meaning, no need to worry about the parabens or sulphates common in standard hair formulas. Thanks to the star ingredient of raw honey, this mask will leave your hair looking good and smelling good. Plus, it’s safe for colour treated curls too.

Winter and dry skin just go together. The pairing may be unpleasant, but it’s perennial. Kind of like Tom and Shiv on Succession or Fitz and Olivia on Scandal. As the enfant terrible of the skincare world, chilly weather tends to unearth issues that otherwise get literally glossed over by summer’s dew. By the time the first snow falls, there’s often a new emergence of cracked lips and skin so dry that it can be likened to a chalkboard. Winter is a universal adversary against hydration, but it’s particularly pressing for darker skin tones, on whom these skincare issues can be more pronounced.

We all feel winter’s ashy wrath, but you’re more likely to actually see it on deeper hues. “In melanin-rich skin there can be increased water loss from the epidermis along with a faster rate of shedding these layers of skin,” explains NYC-based dermatologist and 4.5.6 Melanin Skincare founder Dr. Carlos Charles. “When taken all together, these factors contribute to what is often colloquially termed ‘ashy skin,’ which will typically get worse in the frigid winter months.”

There obviously isn’t a one-size skincare solution for all people of colour, but to build our winter skincare cheat sheet for darker skin tones, we tapped Dr. Charles and esthetician Orica Smart, owner of Ajax-based skin clinic The O Spot, to answer our top-of-mind q’s.

Are some ingredients more winter-friendly than others?

Knowing which ingredients to look out for comes down to understanding what our skin is lacking in the winter. “Black skin and Asian skin doesn’t naturally produce a lot of ceramides, which are natural fats that protect our outer layer of skin.” Smart explains. This ceramide deficit is what’s to blame for the dryness that tends to rear its head from December onward.

To make up for this loss of protection, Smart recommends not only reaching for products rich in ceramides, but also hyaluronic acid, squalene and glycerin. Steer clear of lactic, glycolic and salicylic acids, as these blemish-destroyers can be too drying for daily winter use.

“Exfoliation can still play a role in your winter skincare routine, however you should keep it to a minimum as it can lead to dry, irritated and inflamed skin,” says Smart. It’s all about smart doses of gentle exfoliants when it comes to BHAs and AHAs. These, paired with mild enzymatic exfoliators, can buff away dead skin without disturbing your skin’s equilibrium or leaving you vulnerable to the elements.

Do I need to swap out my usual cleanser?

“Ditch the over-drying, water-based gel cleansers,” Dr. Charles says. I know — over-drying and water-based don’t sound like qualities that belong in the same sentence. Here’s the thing: water-based cleansers draw out water-based impurities like sweat and sebum, but they don’t replace what they remove. Instead, Dr. Charles recommends opting for something lighter with more lipids and less water. “A gentle, creamy cleanser will help to restore and maintain the skin barrier,” he says. If you have oily skin that’s prone to breakouts, look for ingredients such as cucumber extract and tea tree oil, which will keep sebum overproduction at bay without leaving your skin feeling stripped.

How can I step up my moisture game?

“The biggest concern as we enter the winter months is moisture retention,” Dr. Charles says. “As melanin-rich skin becomes dry, it also can become inflamed and sensitive. This is a perfect storm for darker skin tones as the inflammation can result in hyperpigmentation.” No, thank you. Since dry skin triggers this domino effect, sealing in hydration is key. Providing a barrier for your skin during the winter months is the best practice for deeper complexions because, as Dr. Charles puts it, “melanin-rich skin is more prone to trans-epidermal water loss, which is when we lose water through the outermost layer of our skin.”

For POC, childhood memories of being slathered in Vaseline or shea butter may no longer be a thing of the past (we’ve been serving glazed donut skin before glazed donut skin was ever a thing.) “Those are legitimate protectants and they’re great for winter, especially if you’re going to be spending a lot of time outside,” says Smart. “They protect our skin barrier, so they work to bounce dust and pollution off your face. While they won’t actually nourish the skin, they do seal in moisture.”

As those with mobility and accessibility needs know, mastering the skill (and sometimes strength) required to get the hair and makeup looks you long for without a few hacks here and there can feel like an unfair struggle. “There are so many people who don’t call themselves disabled or consider that they have accessibility needs, but they might have hand tremors from normal, daily tasks such as typing all the time or simply ageing,” says Bella Strange, a pro makeup artist, who along with expert hairstylist Susan Shipley, is appearing on Fashion Dis, a new show that features head-to-toe makeovers for those seeking adaptive solutions. We asked Strange and Shipley about the many face and the hair and makeup tools and formulas that can potentially make your daily beauty routine a lot more accessible.

What are some common accessibility issues with makeup packaging?

Bella: “A lot of skincare and makeup brands use glass bottles, which is understandable, but they can be heavy and hard to handle if you don’t have a lot of strength in your arms and hands. If you drop it, it’s a huge mess. Twist-off caps are also really challenging for a lot of people to manage.”

What about regular haircare maintenance?

Susan: “Not everyone has the energy to wash and style their own hair. Some might not have the strength to lift their arms, or for others with chronic illness, sometimes just having a shower is exhausting. As a hairstylist, it’s important to consider which haircuts can make our disabled client’s life easier and more enjoyable. For example, if you have really curly hair, ask you stylist for a cut that will still look great with minimal product when it’s air dried.”

What are some other tips that hairstylists should consider when they have clients with accessibility needs?

Susan: “Start by having a discussion. Can you provide alternate seating or any accessories that would make washing their hair in the salon easier? If your client is having their colour done, consider creating a take-home kit so they can refresh their haircolour at home. That way, they can visit every eight weeks, instead of every four.”

What are some solutions that could make makeup and other products more accessible?

Bella: “I usually have to cover the tops of components in duct tape so it has more surface area I can grip. Easier-to-open makeup packaging with magnets would be great. Also, lids with a ring-like design on the top would allow you to hook your finger through for easier access.”

What are some other beauty resources those with disabilities should consider?

Bella: “It’s easy to give up when you don’t think there are any solutions, but when you start looking, there are actually a lot of blogs and message boards you can use to get great tips. There are people out there who want to help and are interested in sharing what they’ve learned. It’s about making your life easier because we’ve already gone through so many challenges. Beauty is supposed to be about fun and confidence, it shouldn’t be something that seems scary and frustrating.”

Fashion Dis premieres Wednesday, February 9th at 8 p.m. EST on AMI-tv, AMI.ca and the AMI-tv app.

In a surprise twist, the beauty trends out of Paris Fashion Week were arguably the month’s most pared down of all. Instead of delivering over the top glam, the city of lights’ message for fall entailed various levels of chic undress when it came to hair and makeup.

Bare faces were taken a step further with seemingly not a speck of eye makeup (save for a strong brow) at shows such as Loewe, Elie Saab, Chloé and Balmain. The look was paired with the part of the moment (flat down the middle) at several shows, including Courrèges, Louis Vuitton and Acne Studios.

If depending so heavily on a fine-toothed comb doesn’t appeal, the wet looks we saw in Milan continued at Sacai and Valentino, ensuring nary a blowdry is necessary. Ann Demeulemeester, Elie Saab, and Isabel Marant even served up bedhead hair as a very undone option, complete with windswept and wispy baby hairs. At the latter presentation, it was the day old, dented texture that took centre stage (dry shampoo not required), while the wild, unkempt look spotted at Cecilie Bahnsen was accompanied by a sprinkling of messy braids — similar to those you may have tried sleeping in in hopes of achieving a wavy texture come morning.

Braids were also seen at Christian Dior, where models’ hairlines were subtly embellished and fitted with a metallic headband, and at Rochas, which featured long, braid-like twists.

For makeup lovers that just can’t imagine facing what is usually the year’s most polished season without dipping into their makeup bags, boldly hued panda eyes that bordered on punk popped up in bright pink at Valentino, purple at Saint Laurent and a dark, inverted cat-eye shape at Rochas. Finally, the rebellious tone rang true in the form of lip piercing-like cuffs at Balmain and piercing-like studs on lips, cheeks and foreheads at Givenchy.

It was only a matter of time before Gwen Stefani released her own makeup range inspired by her famous red lips and killer brows. Gxve by Gwen Stefani (pronounced “give”) is indeed inspired by her love of the classics but has been formulated with high-performance colour payoff in mind. The range is highly edited with only a few red lip colours, four eyeshadow palettes (all in neutral shades), two brow pencil formulas, a black eyeliner pencil (dubbed “Spiderwebs,” of course) and a universal priming face oil, but we can only guess there’s more exciting drops to come. The whole line has earned Sephora’s certified clean label and based on the fact that it just about instantly sold out, we’d say so far it seems hella good.

This cult firming cream just got a new scent

Sol de Janeiro cream

Sol de Janeiro, makers of the much-loved Brazilian Bum Bum Body Cream, have released another firming cream with an equally delicious scent. The new Beija Flor Elasti-Cream is inspired by hummingbirds (beija flor translates to “flower kisser”) to kiss your skin with all the nourishment it needs to look lush in time for the sunny season. Clinically proven to build collagen, the luxe cream also contains cacay nut oil, said to be an effective alternative to retinol, and hydrating squalane. Even if the skin benefits don’t woo you, we can guarantee that the vacation-in-a-jar scent complete with exotic florals, pink dragonfruit and sea salt will.

Summer Fridays releases its first deep hydration serum

This new weightless jelly serum from Summer Fridays is aimed at drenching SOS-mode skin with mega-hydration. Glycerin, squalane and hyaluronic acid join forces in the oil-free Dream Oasis serum for a refreshing feel that leaves skin soft, silky, and most importantly, plump with moisture. For those whose skin is feeling particularly dry and/or sensitive ATM, you can layer this fragrance-free formula under your go-to moisturizer, while added aloe, colloidal oatmeal and chamomile will help keep your complexion looking and feeling calm.

A new shower must-have from Jack Black

For when you need that extra-refreshing deep clean (say, post workout) this new exfoliating cleanser from Jack Black is just the thing. Perfect for your gym bag, it contains volcanic charcoal to zap odour, dirt and dead skin cells. A moisturizing blend of shea butter, aloe, sea algae and baobab oil leave your skin feeling fresh and hydrated, while the amazingly refreshing saltwater-like scent will leave you feeling ready to take on the world post-rinse.

Valentino drops two romantic fragrances

Valentino Born in Roma

Valentino’s latest eaux de parfums for men and women, dubbed Born in Roma Coral Fantasy, are inspired by that magic part of day when the sun begins to set (and you feel like you still have the whole night ahead of you.) Both feature a romantic rosy-orange juice and the house’s trademark studs. The donna scent is a unique oriental-fruity number, with juicy top notes of kiwi and orange and an exotic woody trail filled with Indian jasmine and creamy Texan cedarwood. Uomo, on the other hand, has a decidedly sexier take on the golden hour with aromatic notes of lavender and clary sage combined with earthy hits of patchouli and smoky tobacco.

The 2022 wedding season is right around the corner, and many are taking a different approach to their bridal hair. Since the pandemic altered the way we plan weddings, many couples fall into one of two camps: wanting a smaller, more intimate affair or going completely over-the-top to make up for all the fun they’ve missed out on in recent years. “I see two versions of a bride at the moment: the super-natural, relatable-looking bride with a more windblown hairstyle that has natural texture or a curl and a middle part, or there’s the bride that says, ‘Screw it. I’ve been on lock down for two years. I’m going all out,'” says pro hairstylist and groomer Cia Mandarello.

Read on for more of the biggest bridal hair trends for 2022.

The Updo is back, baby

Blame it on Bridgerton if you will, but after years of beachy waves and undone buns, the glamour of the opulent updo has returned. “The new updo is not as clean and tight as the prom hair of our youth, but it does have a lot more intentional shape. It’s not boho chic, but there’s a more natural effect, with lots of room for natural curls and textures and a misplaced coil here and there,” says Mandarello. For those with naturally textured hair, Mandarello says to consider combining a high shape with some small braids, or twisting a braid along your hairline for an inspired take.

Embellishing is always the right move

Bridal Hair Trends 2022
Lelet NY Pearl Hoop Crown

Chic hair accessories are more popular than ever and, again, reflect the luxe Georgian era of Bridgerton with added jewellery, bows, pearls and, yes, even tiaras. This look is especially perfect for those with short hair who want to take their signature look to the next level. “If your style is long enough, you can blow it out super sleek and tight and then pull it back or wear it side-parted and tucked really tight behind your ears,” says Mandarello. For super-short lengths, consider a slight wave that’s lightly brushed out and accentuate it with a jewelled barrette over one ear or even a luxe headband. Lastly, add a veil for some extra drama. “Ditch the flower crowns, veils are back,” says Mandarello who notes that even though brides are embracing colour for their overall look more than ever, the classic veil, especially in white or cream lace, is a romantic statement that is back in high demand.

Showcase your signature texture

Step away from the mermaid wave extensions. While a little extra hair may be needed for the elaborate updos mentioned above, if you’re wearing your hair down, it’s all about making the most of the hair you already have. “During the [pandemic], people started to finally embrace their natural colour and texture and are even more comfortable with letting greys come through,” says Mandarello. Now, brides feel like they want to show more of themselves for their big day, and are losing that desire to relax, colour process and totally change up their bridal look.

Upgrade your routine…but don’t change it

“The months leading up to your wedding is not the time to try something new!” says Mandarello. Instead, focus on keeping your hair as healthy as possible so that it’s easy to work with and naturally looks great on the big day. “Instead of jumping off the deep end with a new colour or cut, lean in to hair treatments and leave-in conditioners,” says Mandarello. Try to limit heat styling to keep breakage to a minimum. “If you feel like you absolutely have to change it up, give yourself at least three months so that if something catastrophic occurs, you’ve got a buffer,” says Mandarello. Lastly, whether you’re going for a hair trial or not (highly recommended if you’re seeing a professional on your wedding day) try to wear your hair in the same style you have planned for one of your dress fittings, so you can ensure you like how everything looks together before the big day. It’s also a helpful move so you can double-check that your hairstyle of choice doesn’t cause any strands to get caught in any beadwork on your dress, or if certain hair accessories are too uncomfortable to wear for hours on end.

When Black Opium first launched in 2014 with its signature floral-coffee twist on the famous original, it was an instant hit. Addictive in its clash of strong notes such as white flowers, black coffee and gourmand vanilla, the juice is now being reinvented once more. The new YSL Black Opium Illicit Green parfum is predictably still quite bold, but is a fresh take with notes of sparkling green mandarin, crisp fig leaf and an accord of creamy fig fruit.

We’ve all been told that getting a solid night of sleep is the secret to keeping everything from our mind to our weight in check. Now, Noble Panacea, founded by British-American scientist Sir Fraser Stoddart (who won the Noble Prize in 2016 for his lifetime contributions to organic chemistry), is taking a deeper dive into how we can optimize our skin’s nightly DNA repair and recovery in sync with our circadian rhythms. The brand’s new overnight mask contains a series of potent and sophisticated actives, such as exfoliating polyhydroxy acid, retinol, peptides and two weights of hyaluronic acid (to reach different levels of skin), each of which are programmed to release in sequence so that it works with your skin’s overnight phases of detox, repair and regeneration. Everyone knows that the best time to target a breakout is as soon as you feel that painful pressure brewing below your skin’s surface. Avène’s new drying emulsion was made for getting ahead of a pesky spot (or many) and limiting its havoc to just one day. The spot treatment was developed with the brand’s trademark thermal mineral spring water sourced from the south of France, along with Comedoclastin, an active ingredient which limits the development of microcomedones, and retinaldehyde, a vitamin A derivative widely used by derms for treating acne-prone skin. Simply dab it on where needed and wait for the magic to happen.

It’s official: Makeup is back. We’ve kept our routines to a minimum for the past couple of years in favour of focusing on more mask-friendly skincare, but this season’s looks are all about playing in our cosmetics bags again. While over-the-top Italian glamour will always send hearts racing (we’re looking at you, Moschino), natural and carefree beauty continued to be the overwhelming theme at Milan Fashion Week Fall 2022.

Middle parts and natural textures were seen on the runways of classically boho labels such as Etro and Missoni, as well as many others, including Abodi and Sportmax. However, just as we were thinking we could stash our blow dryers come fall, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana paired middle parts with super-sleek and polished strands that nearly have us blowing the dust off our early 2000s-era flat irons.

Don’t even have time for an air dry? Why not simply slick your hair back right out of the shower? Jil Sander and Giorgio Armani showed too-cool-for-school wet looks, while the pared-down bouffants at Prada were slicked back with more sculpted shapes and volume. Just like we saw in London, headgear continues to be a major accessory (and saving grace) for next fall, with a wide variety of hats, caps and snoods seen at Max Mara, Alberta Ferretti, Gucci, DSquared2 and more.

Gorgeous, glowing skin (and not much else) continued to dominate the catwalk (Fendi, Roberto Cavalli and Tod’s), while on the opposite side of the spectrum a more jubilant mood brought bright flashes of colour to the forefront. Eyes continued to be the focus with liner and shadows seen in every shade of the rainbow at Capasa Milano, purple at Blumarine, orange at AC9 and Missoni, pink at Emporio Armani (complete with those club kid crystals), and silver and cobalt at Gucci. But brightly pigmented hairlines and face paint at Diesel and bright blue, black and scarlet pouts at Gucci and Blumarine showed that it’s not just your eyeline that can have all the fun come fall.

The internet’s favourite beauty rebel is finally bringing what they do so well in skincare (scientific formulas, utter transparency and excellent prices) to your hair routine. One of the biggest messages sure to turn heads is the brand’s pro-sulfate approach. In recent years, beauty fans have turned against the ingredient (which creates lather but is also thought to be overly drying to the hair), however The Ordinary’s stance is that it’s still the key to effectively ditching dirt and sebum when used in the correct concentrations (instead of, say, as the first or second ingredient). The hair care line from The Ordinary contains a shampoo (with 4 per cent sulphate) that can also be used on the body, a light conditioner and a post-wash hydrating scalp treatment with hyaluronic acid.

Charlotte Tilbury drops a new facial oil for glowing skin

Charlotte Tilbury’s new Collagen Superfusion Facial Oil is formulated with a potent plant-based protein (which the brand calls the next-generation collagen matrix) that plumps skin and leaves a radiant glow while also forming a barrier on the skin to seal in moisture throughout the day or overnight. For a relaxing spa-like experience, it also contains lavender, Damask rose, neroli and eucalyptus oils.

Make Up For Ever reformulates its popular HD Foundation

Designed with a new bottle made from 40 per cent recycled glass, a bio-sourced cap and FSC carton, Make Up For Ever’s new and improved HD Skin Foundation has been developed to mimic and blend in with your skin as realistically as possible under any light source. The long-time industry darling is also water- and sweat-proof and instantly blurs the complexion. It’s also buildable for light to full coverage in a semi-matte finish. If you’re already a fan, many of the existing shades will still be available in the new 40-shade offering, which serves up hues in four shade families and three undertones.

Ogx introduces a new anti-fall shampoo

Just as you wouldn’t start your morning sans your customary cup o’ joe, the new hopped-up Anti-Hair Fall + Coconut Caffeine Shampoo and Conditioner from Ogx may just become another one of your A.M. must-haves. The formula works to strengthen hair and cut down on lost strands due to over-styling and breakage. Fortified with coconut oil, caffeine and coffee extract, hair is left looking fuller and more resilient to brushing, heat styling and general tension (not to mention smelling heavenly, too.)

Restart your complexion with Holifrog’s new exfoliating mask

Holistic skincare brand Holifrog (inspired by how the skin of frogs is so thin and permeable it absorbs everything in its surroundings) has released a new type of exfoliating mask that goes way beyond your standard skin smoothing processes. Instead, the Kosi Multi-Acid Mask reaches the cellular level to prevent further skin damage and help eradicate signs of stressed skin, such as general dullness and splotchy patches. A mega-blend of AHAs, PHA and BHA help brighten the skin and target hyper-pigmentation. The mask also contains anti-inflammatory magnesium and a potent blend of anti-oxidants such as neem leaf, gingko biloba and turmeric root to calm and protect the skin.

Growing up, I had one of those moms that could do almost anything. She cooked jerk chicken, built shelves and, most importantly, she could braid. When I was younger, I would sit on a pillow in front of the TV and get my hair done by her capable hands. After marathoning Charmed or One Tree Hill for hours, I would leave the flattened pillow with a bruised butt, a tender scalp and gleaming braids.

At the time, I wasn’t interested in the process. I was interested in looking cute and watching toxic couples break up and make up (Phoebe and Cole forever.)

When I moved to Toronto for school and noticed my lack of Black girl beauty skills, doing my own hair still didn’t cross my mind. Instead, I suffered through a few braidless years before meeting my favourite stylist, Stephon. Her styles never missed, and I never missed out.

However, in March 2020, haircare got complicated again. As stylists started cancelling appointments due to COVID-19, I started to feel completely helpless and powerless. On top of the chaos of layoffs and lockdowns going on around me, it was crushing to think that even my appearance was now out of my control.

That summer, while everyone else was baking bread, I decided to carpe diem my own new skill: the box braid. Here’s how I did it.

Step 1: Do your research

While I love my mom, I’d rather swallow a jean jacket than have her teach me how to braid my hair over the phone. Instead, I turned to visual cues as my best resource and and watched tons of YouTube videos. Arnell Armon’s first attempt stood out.

But, let’s be real: Arnell is an Aquarius known for looking good, and I’m a Sagittarius who can’t even lay edges. I knew my first go would be way more chaotic than hers, but I soaked up as much information as I could, such as using apple cider vinegar as a cleanser and using pre-stretched hair to save time. Every tip made me feel like I was in on something special that only Black girls knew. Soon, I went from feeling powerless to powerful.

Step 2: Practice doesn’t always make the perfect box braid

Once I sourced my supplies — six packs of hair, wrap foam, gel and a tail comb — I was ready to go. Turns out, it wasn’t as hard as I thought. It was harder. My parts were messy. My braids were loose. My hair wasn’t blending in with the synthetic hair the way I’d hoped. I’d finish one hideous braid with aching fingers and then watch it unravel moments later.

After the first four hours, I felt like giving up. But, with the help of a couple pizza pockets and a lot of Phoebe Bridgers, I soldiered on and somehow managed the above look.

My friends said they looked good but…we all saw Arnell’s braids, right? I was proud of myself for trying, but I also knew I was rocking a look that would put a queen in the bottom two on Drag Race. Humiliating.

Step 3: Take a break, but try again

By fall, salons started opening up again and I went back to Stephon with a new appreciation. Like I said, her braids don’t miss.

However, by the following summer I felt like I owed it to myself to try again. I switched things up to work for me this time. I went with big braids instead of medium-sized; knotless instead of knotted; and I actually used the pre-stretched hair. The results were world’s apart.

I loved these chunky rose gold braids. They fit my style, they fit my skills, and I literally created them with my own two hands. I got tons of compliments from friends and even strangers on the street. I’d bask in that little look of shock they got when I said, “Thanks, I did it myself!”

The barrier that had always existed between me and my favourite protective style was suddenly gone. Although I did contemplate shaving my head once or twice during the process, now I knew that I could box braid whenever I wanted. On my terms.

Pandemic restrictions ended up showing me that you don’t actually have to be a perfect stylist to be your own perfect stylist. It’s never too late to learn a new skill, especially when it can make you feel instantly more powerful and in control of your own sense of self. What’s more beautiful than that?

In a surprise move, one of the most noteworthy beauty lessons to come out of London Fashion Week Fall 2022 was that you may not have to worry about styling your hair at all next season. The prolific parade of headwear that was seen in all forms on the runways, from jovial extra-wide brimmed hats to moody hoods and balaclavas, practically guaranteed that bad hair days need not be feared any longer. Those not yet ready to cover their coif à la Richard Quinn, Ahluwalia and Erdem can dip their toes into the accessory waters with a headband, as seen at Eudon Choi and Roksanda.

If it’s your makeup brushes you’re ready to take a break from, bare faces continued to be the trend du jour at shows including Christopher Kane, David Koma and Nensi Dojaka. But on the other end of the spectrum, a beauty rebellion of sorts was brewing, including a bevy of ’90s-era punk rock looks complete with generously applied black eye liner and spiky devil-may-care updos.

While Aadnevik and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi may tempt you to unearth your volumizing mousse and texturizing pomade, you can still play nice with your standby eyeliner pencils and pens thanks to Bora Aksu, Molly Goddard and Eudon Choi. To mix it up a little, there was still lots of the party-ready embellishment we previewed in New York, with a spectrum of colour (Mark Fast), crystals (Simone Rocha, The Blonds and Paul Costelloe) and a dynamic focus on the lower lash line, such as the graphic looks spotted at Ozwald Boatang and Roksanda.

Finally, if it’s a smooth-as-silk blowout you prefer to pair with your smoky eye (à la Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface) look no further than the throwback looks spotted at Halpern and 16Arlington, who along with Bora Aksu, proved that middle part supremacy rages on.

The best beauty trends from New York Fashion Week Fall 2022

As the first leg of fashion month wrapped up in New York, we got an early glimpse at some of best beauty trends we’ll be coveting come fall 2022. Of course, the usual standbys of smoky eyes and red lips were still on-tap (one can always count on celeb-fave Michael Kors to bring the glam) but other looks seemed to fall into two current beauty directions: natural and understated or over-the-top whimsy. The former is undoubtedly still inspired by years of masks and a lack of hair appointments, and simple, un-done hair was a refreshing touch at Prabal Gurung, Collina Strada and Proenza Schouler.

The pared-down look at Proenza Schouler was made complete with a skin-first complexion that showed off glowing, healthy faces which were also seen at Carolina Herrera, Altuzarra and Ulla Johnson.

On the flip side, the urge to dial up the glam with the party-inspired beauty we saw for spring was still going strong on many New York Fashion Week runways. Euphoria’s influence on glitter, boldly-coloured eyeshadow and dynamic lashes were spotted at several shows, including Area, LaQuan Smith and Bronx and Banco. The throwbacks didn’t stop there — bubble ponies at Tia Adeola and crimped hair at Christian Siriano proved that the ’90s and 2000s heyday isn’t coming to an end anytime soon.

Television’s starring role in our pandemic-era lives is no secret, and ahead of its much-anticipated return, Bridgerton’s stamp on unapologetic glam (and effort) was seen in fanciful and romantic updos at shows such as Brandon Maxwell and Batsheva. For some middle ground, the hair at Patbo struck a balanced note with the season’s undone locks still made photo-ready with bows and other pearl embellishments.

Euphoria’s Doniella Davy announces a new beauty line

Davy’s power and influence in the beauty world reigns supreme and to further connect her reach, the makeup artist announced on her Instagram this week that a Euphoria-inspired beauty line named Half Magic and created by herself and the creators of the show would be coming to the masses this May. Davy has already collaborated on various show-inspired pieces for Face Lace, so we can only expect that these new formulas (which she’s been using during Season 2) will help fans take those bold looks to the next level. Excuse us while we set an Insta alert…

Glossier’s After Baume is here for your complexion woes

Moisture barrier protectors are all the rage ATM, and this new balm from Glossier is right on target to be a new fave amongst Canadian brand fans (it’s described as a “puffer jacket for your skin,” after all). The heavy duty cream has the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance in the U.S. and is perfect for using as a last step to your evening routine, or giving your skin a little TLC at anytime with its cocooning formula that’s rid of alcohol, fragrance, colour or essential oils, which can all be very sensitizing. It’s perfect for giving your complexion a  much-needed re-set (and for nabbing that skin-first look from above in time for fall.)

Gone are the days that male celebs would shrink away from a little men’s grooming such as some well-placed concealer or hairspray before stepping onto the red carpet. “Now my clients come in and say, ‘Make me look like you did for X person,’” says LA-based men’s groomer Lauren Kaye Cohen, who has been prepping an endless list of A-listers such as Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Leonardo DiCaprio and Rami Malek for high-profile events and photoshoots over the last 20 years.

What exactly is causing this shift, you may be wondering? Beauty-conscious celebs like Timothée Chalamet, Henry Golding and Harry Styles (thanks in part to their makeup artists) have reimagined the boundaries of men’s grooming. And some experts (like TikToker Cat Quinn) note the power in primping for the “female gaze” — meaning less restriction and more creativity.

A post shared by Timothée Chalamet (@tchalamet)

“We all want to look our best for ourselves, but the reality is, we also want to be appealing to whoever we want to find us attractive. I think that guys are getting it more and more that when they put a little bit more effort in, it gets noticed,” says Cohen.

Read on for Cohen’s best tricks and the biggest men’s grooming trends right now:

Ready to Join Meeting?

“Clients that are in the Zoom world have become more focused on wanting their hair, eyes and skin to look really put together because their faces are taking up the whole screen and that’s all anyone sees,” says Cohen. Years of wearing masks have also had a huge effect, with many experiencing more skin irritation. As a result, more men are sporting facial hair not only to be able to skip daily shaving, but also to be more comfortable while wearing a mask. However, the overgrown beard is a thing of the past. “Now the facial hair look is a little tighter, shorter and much more clean,” says Cohen. For effortless hair between washes (and even post-gym), a cleansing texturizing spray is man’s new best friend.

Golden arches for the win

Cohen says that well-groomed brows are critical to giving your look that certain je ne sais quoi since they frame your entire face. While she says over-grooming is a definite no-no, aim to define your brow’s general shape and clean up the in-between areas. “Our faces are not symmetrical, so we’re never going to have identical brows and shouldn’t try to,” says Cohen, who explains that the biggest trap for men trying to DIY their brows is standing too close to the mirror while trying to make each brow look exactly the same (and quickly getting carried away.) “Stand back after plucking every two or three hairs and make sure you’re clocking their natural shape.” A good quality set of tweezers that are easy to handle are key (Cohen says these are still the best.) As a finishing touch, Tom Ford’s Fiber Brow Gel is the most natural looking as it’s not shiny and doesn’t dry hard or flake off. “Wipe off like tip first, so it doesn’t deposit too much product and apply sparingly,” says Cohen.

Ditch tired eyes

“A lot of clients are really into eye masks,” says Cohen who is obsessed with these 111Skin gel masks because they instantly brighten and tighten the skin and zap puffy eyes. Cohen is also a fan of the Foreo UFO 2 masking device, which is great tech for guys since they can track the app on their phones and get event-ready results in three minutes. “I always use it with the Youth Junkie mask, which is collagen-infused and great for the whole face,” she says.

Polish is here to stay

While more and more men are turning to nail colour to express themselves, Cohen (who painted long-time client Steven Tyler’s nails for over a decade!) says putting in a little extra work with your manicure will go a long way. “A lot of guys just throw polish on without a base or topcoat, but then it looks like a little kid did it and it definitely won’t last as long,” she says. While moody hues like black and navy are go-tos, the new must-haves are off-beat neutrals. Think this cool grey, sage green or chic espresso shade. Since you’re drawing extra attention to your hands, remember to treat them (and those dry cuticles) with a luxe hand cream. This anti-aging Dr. Barbara Strum formula is one of Cohen’s favourite pre-red carpet treatments because it doesn’t leave any residue behind and can even be applied the night before for great results.

A little concealer goes a long way

All you need to keep your eyes looking light and bright 24/7 is a tiny dab of well-placed concealer. “I love using your fingers for this because their little bit of heat helps to meld the product seamlessly into your skin,” says Cohen. Use your ring finger to dab the inner corner of your eye first, then work the product only slightly downward and stop. Avoiding the urge to cover your whole under-eye area is the trick to keeping the makeup invisible while still getting results, says Cohen. The other key? Applying a good eye cream first, which helps the concealer to go on super smooth and resist settling into fine lines. For a wide variety of shades and a super-light consistency, Cohen turns to this formula, which is a standby in her kit.

In fact, the social platform predicts these trending “puff love” searches will continue to fuel this look’s popularity in 2022. “It’s been around, but I think what’s making high-puff really cool now is all the creative variations of it,” says Janet Jackson, a pro hairstylist and L’Oréal Paris hair expert.

Looking to elevate your puff? Scroll on.

Stock the right tools

While there are many ways to reach high puff perfection, there are a few key items that can help set the foundation. Stock up on elastic bands of various sizes so you can customize your look to your hair texture. (You can even cut and tie traditional cloth elastics to get the perfect fit.) Other necessities? Hair pins, a hard brush and a slicking product, if you want to achieve that ultra-sleek finish. “For ultimate polish with this style, I like using pomades and cream pastes, which allow you to manipulate the hair a lot easier than with a gel,” says Jackson.

Build your foundation

All curls are not created equal. Though Jackson says any hair type can pull off this look, your curl pattern and hair length may affect the way you do your ‘do. Type 3 or 4 textures naturally have that puff look, whereas those with looser curl patterns may have to put in a little extra work. “If you have type 3 or 4 hair, depending on the length, you can simply pick it out or use hairspray to set it into place. Those with type 1 or 2 hair can still achieve that puffy texture by pre-braiding, teasing or even creating knots on top of their head and pining them in place,” says Jackson.

Elevate, elevate, elevate!

How you style your hair is a form of self-expression, so let loose! If your puff isn’t quite as voluminous or as long as you’d like, textured hair extensions can be a great way to cheat the system. Elevate your extensions by switching up your colour to add a bit of creative flair, suggests Jackson.  You can also double the fun by creating two puffs for a space bun look. “Instead of parting your hair straight down the middle, switch it up by parting on an angle or even creating a zig zag part,” says Jackson. To spice things up even more, consider incorporating braids either at the base of your look, or outside your puff.

Make it shine

Up the ante by getting experimental with your baby hairs and accessories. The styling possibilities are endless when it comes to shaping baby hairs, with countless variations of loops and swirls to play with. “You can definitely go wild with baby hairs and you can even add accessories,” says Jackson. Let Euphoria be your guide and try adding rhinestones atop your baby hairs and throughout your look to turn your casual days into editorial evenings.

U Beauty founder Tina Chen Craig (of BagSnob fame) was inspired to create her latest concoction The Barrier Bioactive Treatment after reminiscing about her grandmother taking her for acupuncture and Immortelle Jellyfish treatments in Hong Kong to remedy her tired skin between school semesters in the U.S. While she says she dreaded the sticky, less-than-glam experience, there was no denying the glowing responses she received once returning stateside. After testing the mask for nearly five years (a process that included sending samples for feedback to BFF Nicky Hilton Rothschild), Craig was finally able to replicate the skin-plumping and smoothing experience — no endangered jellyfish required. The overnight mask still uses bioactive marine ingredients along with the brand’s patent-pending siren capsule technology to target free radicals and boost new cell growth. She’s so obsessed she has to stop herself from applying it all over her body — though she secretly says it’s the best “baby foot” treatment around.

If you’ve left Valentine’s Day shopping to the last minute and are starting to see red, don’t sweat it. Sephora stores across the country are stepping up to save the occasion by offering same-day delivery up to and including Monday, so you can still play Cupid (and show face). While the speedy service will set you back around $10, you can use code VDAYSAMEDAY and add to cart in a hurry, free of charge.

Trinny London’s new skincare range lands in Canada

Trinny London‘s easy-to-use, no-fuss makeup range is already available around the globe. Now, the brand (from Trinny Woodall of the UK’s original What Not to Wear) is launching two new cleansers in Canada as a preview of its soon-to-come skincare range. Be Your Best is an oil-based balm perfect for dry or irritated skin, which comes with a muslin cloth and gently nourishes with pineapple enzymes, glycolipids and almond and linseed oils. For those with oily or combination skin, Better Off is a gel cleanser with oat amino acids and both malic and lactic acids for an exfoliating wash that targets clogged pores without stripping your skin. The best part? Both are refillable so you can continue to use with abandon.

Dior reinvents a classic men’s scent

Dior Homme Sport cologne

Inspired by the sport of boxing and house ambassador Robert Pattinson (whose highly anticipated The Batman is due in cinemas in a matter of weeks), Dior Homme Sport has been reinvented by perfumer Francois Demachy for a bolder take on the popular original. While the eau de toilette has been given a dynamic twist with sultry notes of wood and spice, the juice still retains its refreshing citrus zing thanks to Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian lemon. The new heart note of moody frankincense is another bold take, not unlike the series of videos documented by the house featuring pro and amateur boxers from around the globe, including Ryan Garcia and Younes Bendjima. Check them out now on Insta.

This lavender bath duo is Valentine’s Day approved

Bleu Lavande Bath

This new bath duo from French Canadian brand Bleu Lavande is just begging to be the star of your Valentine’s evening self care (or couples bath) moment. The Quebec-based lavender farm (one of the country’s first) is the source of the essential oil featured in both the all-natural lavender bath salts and massage oil. Use the latter to make your soak even more luxe, or smooth it on after for decadently soft and lightly-scented skin.

Nars makes us all want to wear lip gloss again

Nars Lip Gloss

Lip gloss is just one of the many early 2000s makeup must-haves making its fearless return, and Nars is here for it. Spotted on multiple Spring runways, including Blumarine (duh), Fendi and Giambattista Valli, the shiny lip is undoubtedly flattering and can super-size your pout in one swipe (feel free to leave the decade’s filler-mania behind.) The new AfterGlow Lip Shine comes in ten shades, and unlike many of those sticky (and glittery) renditions from the past, it goes on smooth with mirror-like shine and actually hydrates lips with jojoba and raspberry seed oils. Your move, Bonnebell.

Inspired by a Monet-like garden filled with shimmering water and lush blooms, these three new limited edition lipsticks from Hermès are meant to bring a little light to your makeup routine. Acting like watercolours, the formulas look bright but go on with a glossy, transparent finish in shades of peach, orange and pink. The three limited edition tubes designed by Pierre Hardy (who is also the mastermind behind the brand’s shoe and jewellery collections) come packaged in the brand’s trademark orange box and can be refilled with existing lipstick hues (or new ones to come.)

Klorane introduces sustainable shampoo bars

Klorane Shampoo Bar

French pharmacy favourite Klorane is extending its best-selling mango butter and oat milk shampoo range, which are both ideal for dry hair, to include more sustainable bar formulas. Free of silicone, sulfate-surfactants (the ingredient that creates lots of lather and bubbles but can be extremely harsh on the skin and hair), the bars hold up the same effective formulas as the originals, but without the excess packaging. Both are great for adding hydration to lacklustre locks, but the Ultra-Gentle formula with oat milk works wonders to treat a dry scalp for softer, shinier hair.

A luxe new balm from Guerlain perfect for slugging

Guerlain Cica Honey Balm

Guerlain’s new Abeille Royale Intense Repair Youth Oil-in-Balm is the most luxurious answer possible to your new slugging routine. Its combo of cica and beeswax butter effectively protect your skin’s moisture barrier and lock in water molecules while you sleep or brave the elements (or indoor heating.) It contains 95 per cent naturally-derived ingredients, including sustainably-sourced,  concentrated blackbee honey from Ouessant Island (the scent is incredible), an island off the coast of Brittany, which functions as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is recognized as a uniquely pollution- and pesticide-free environment.

Oribe’s new haircare line for battered strands

Oribe Hair Alchemy Shampoo

Plagued by weak, broken strands from colouring, heat styling, or just intense daily styling? Enter, Oribe’s new Hair Alchemy collection. Made with a unique combo of plant proteins, bio-fermented bamboo leaf, green tea, hyaluronic acid and chia seeds, the formulas claim to penetrate the hair shaft to help strengthen your hair from the inside out. It also works to protect brittle ends (between trims!) and build elasticity to prevent further breakage. Now, if only there was a support group for flat iron addiction.

Shea Moisture improves its popular shea butter line

Shea Moisture hair mask

Fans of Shea Moisture’s much-loved shea butter lineup can now look forward to their hair lapping up more effective hydration (and it often needs as much as it can get this time of year) thanks to the whole range being re-vamped with a more effective combo of moisturizing ingredients, along with its namesake organic raw shea butter. To extend your sleeker and more conditioned results between washes, the brand is also dropping a new leave-in which smoothes your strands and keeps frizz at bay for longer, so you can keep drying shampoos to a minimum.

January is over, but we won’t be parting ways with winter anytime soon. As we await spring, it doesn’t hurt to indulge in some new beauty products to lift your weather-worn spirit. Whether it’s an addictive new scent (with a spring-like hue to boot), a glossy manicure in a pretty pastel shade, a brighter haircolour or a hard-working mascara that actually does curl your lashes for you, we’ve rounded up all the February 2022 beauty launches to help you remember that a new season is on the horizon…regardless of what Wiarton Willie has to say about it.

Burberry Her eau de toilette

If you’re someone who has a hard time choosing a fragrance (let’s not even go there with a “signature scent”) because you just love to have it all, the new Burberry Her eau de toilette may be the one to finally turn your head. Considered floral, fruity and gourmand, the new pistachio-hued juice offers up a bit of everything, including a juicy top note of green pear and berries, heart notes of peony and honeysuckle and sophisticated cedarwood base. Because, sometimes, more really is more.

Pupa Milano Zero Calorie Chocolate Eyeshadow in ‘Spicy Chocolate’

While we feel no need to serve up yet another reminder that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, this new chocolate-hued (and scented!) eyeshadow palette is here for those who love a subtle, smoky eye and may or may not have gone sugar-free in the new year. The seven shades come in multiple tones and finishes perfect for an everyday look, but are also ready to be dialed up for something more saucy come evening. If you prefer rosier undertones, be sure to check out the Ruby Chocolate version.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Rehydrating Mask

Kiehl's Overnight Mask

The original Ultra Facial Cream is a life-saver for many and a global best-seller around the world. For those that can’t get enough (or refuse to give up their existing standby), the new Ultra-Facial Overnight Rehydrating Mask is now up for your consideration. Made with over 10 per cent plant-derived squalene (the hottest it-hydrator since hyaluronic acid), it works to protect your moisture barrier overnight (when our skin can lose up to 93 per cent more water) for up to three days of moisture. Not a fan of sleeping with too much stuff on your face? You can also use it as a 15 minute mask for a quick boost before tissuing off any remnants.

Milk Rise mascara

Milk Rise Mascara

After the runaway success of its mega-voluminous Kush mascara, Milk is launching a new wand that is 93 per cent natural and vegan and meant to give you a more refined and lightweight work-day-ready fringe. The curved brush with crimped bristles helps give every lash the attention they deserve (even if they’re a little sparse to begin with) while lengthening, curling and offering up longwear. The formula contains a blend of four plant waxes, monoi oil and marigold extract for soft lashes without that mucky feel. The squishy tube is even cleverly designed with mini ridges for an ergonomically-pleasing application, regardless if you’re a lefty or a righty.

Tom Ford Bitter Peach collection

The eye-catching new Bitter Peach collection from Tom Ford Beauty features a ‘Belle de Peche’ long-wearing and highly pigmented eyeshadow quad and two lipsticks. The first is an everyday pink dubbed ‘Cherie’ while the second, ‘Scarlet Rouge’ is,  you guessed it, a juicy, vibrant red. Packaged in flashy orange lacquer, the whole collection is inspired by the Bitter Peach fragrance, meant to capture the peak sweetness of a ripe peach, right before it starts to sour. Perfect for fans of fruity-floral scents, it contains Sicilian blood orange and cardamom oils.

Dermalogica Clear Start Post-Breakout Fix

We all know we’re not supposed to pick at our face, but sometimes, in the glaring light of our bathroom vanity, it just happens. Dermalogica’s new medicated gel-cream to the rescue. Formulated with healing hexylresorcinol and exfoliating salicylic acid and hydrating squalane, the treatment helps your spots recover by nixing post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation, a.k.a. those red and/or dark spots that take longer and longer to fade as we get older. It can even help fade old marks from traumas past. Hands off, tubes up.

Clairol Blonde It Up

For blondes that are looking for a little refresh without having to visit the salon (or haven’t been able to during lockdown), Clairol’s new Blonde It Up formula can help you brighten your shade up to five levels. Its new breakthrough formula works without bleach, and uses “aminolift” technology instead to simultaneously lift your hair’s pigments without damaging your locks’ natural keratin or structure. It comes in two shades (for both lighter and darker blonde hues), and a conditioner which you can use to instantly tone down brassiness for one to two weeks post-colouring.

OPI x Xbox Ccollection

Attention all gamers: OPI’s latest colour collection in collaboration with Xbox is all about bringing your virtual life to reality. Filled with 12 vibrant, shimmering shades which are also perfect for a little spring dreaming, you can unlock Xbox game content for both “Halo Infinite” and “Forza Horizon 5” with every purchase at select retailers. Looking for a serious console upgrade? Fans will also have a chance to win custom wireless controllers in the collection’s top shades, so you can match your gear to your tips. Select shades are available in gel and powder finishes, for those that are, ahem, a little hard on their hands.

R&B singer H.E.R. has been racking up accolades. Last year alone, she snagged two Grammys, including for Song of the Year (she already has several nominations for 2022) and an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Fight for You,” featured in Judas and the Black Messiah. It feels like the California native is just getting started and the sky is surely the limit. Along with her signature shades, her luscious curly hair is instantly recognizable, so it comes as no surprise that H.E.R was recently announced as the latest spokesperson for L’Oréal Paris’s Dream Lengths Curl range.

We asked H.E.R. how she manages to keep her hair at its best (especially now that she’s a beauty ambassador) and the keys to curly girl appreciation.

How does it feel to be the face of a major beauty brand, and how did you celebrate?

I’m so excited! I can’t believe that I’m working with this brand that I’ve grown up with that actually contributed to my love of beauty. It is surreal. I didn’t really have a proper celebration. Honestly, things like this are all about having moments of deep gratitude. They make me want to go harder in everything I do.

What are some lessons you’ve learned on your curly hair journey?

I’ve learned a lot. My mom didn’t really know how to take care of my hair when I was little but she used to have fun styling it. She taught me how versatile my hair can be! Trims are important. I also don’t wash my curls everyday because it’s too drying, and most importantly, patience is key!

How have you dealt with any negativity or bad feelings about your hair?

I’ve definitely taken my curls for granted. Society has looked down upon big hair. Often, women have been made to feel like curly hair can’t be professional or “appropriate.” So, we’ve felt obligated to straighten it. Thankfully, now, we are appreciating our big, fluffy curls and we still have the option to straighten it if we want to and just have fun with it.

How do you care for your hair while you sleep?

I always try to wear a bonnet or put it in a pineapple bun.

Dream Lengths Curl
Photography Courtesy of L’Oréal Paris

What are some beauty staples you make sure to always have with you on the road?

I absolutely need a great brush, bobby pins and the Dream Lengths Super Curls Mousse.

How does your hair play into your public persona?

My big curls give me so much confidence when I perform. I love how I can play with my hair on stage and how bouncy it is.

Are there any looks you’d love to try with your hair that you haven’t yet?

I want to try a short look, but admittedly I may not do that any time soon!

Tessa Thompson, who is currently filming Creed III with Michael B. Jordan and will soon reprise her role as Valkyrie in this year’s Thor: Love and Thunder, has just been named the new face of Giorgio Armani Beauty. Look for her to rep both the Luminous Silk Foundation, which comes in 40 shades, and Lip Power, the brand’s longwear, satin-finish lipstick. Since the former is a mainstay in many pros’ makeups kits, Tessa Thompson says her new role feels like a full circle moment. “When I first started as an actor, I would do my own my own hair and makeup on red carpets, to varying degrees of success! When I had one of my first big movie premieres, I worked with an artist who actually introduced me to Luminous Silk. So, the first time I had my makeup done professionally in Hollywood was with this foundation. It feels very exciting that now there will be women that will be able to look at [me in] an ad and see a version of themselves,” she says.

Bite Beauty launches its first fully recyclable product

Bite Beauty’s new Agave Lip Butter Balm has a vegan formula that is fortified with mango seed butter and oil and agave leaf extract to condition lips and keep them feeling hydrated around the clock (a must-have as we broach mid-winter). It goes on super-smooth without any stickiness, and its fully aluminum packaging ensures it can be tossed in the recycle bin when you’re ready for a fresh tube.

Customizable haircare brand Prose has launched in Canada

If you still have yet the find the perfect shampoo, conditioner and styling routine for your locks, Prose, which has newly launched in Canada, might just hold the solutions you’ve been looking for. After a short consultation, which takes over 80 variables into account, including your own hair traits, habits and local climate conditions (your products can even be adjusted seasonally), the carbon-neutral brand can suggest a personalized routine, which they then bottle fresh-to-order. The formulas contain sustainably-sourced ingredients, and are all sulfate-, paraben-, and phlathate-free. Plus, when you re-order you can note what you thought worked (and what didn’t) so you can continue to court the perfect fit.

The Ordinary’s most in-demand product is finally back in stock

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid

After two years and a 400K+ waitlist, The Ordinary’s much-loved Salicylic Acid 2% Solution, which famously sells for only $6.50, has re-launched in-stores and online this week. The gentle exfoliating serum is great for those with regular breakouts, but works wonders for all skin types by effectively nixing dead skin cells and decongesting pores. Other popular picks in the brand’s lineup (which have helped to tide over fans of the original solution) are the Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution, which is waterless and comes in a squalene-base, and the salicylic acid clay and charcoal mask which can be used once to twice a week on problem areas.

After launching its now best-selling Milk Marvel Dark Spot Serum in the U.S. last year, Eadem skincare, created by Marie Kouadio Amouzame and Alice Lin Glover (they met while they were both working at Google), are bringing their much-loved brand of skincare specifically formulated for people of colour to Canada. The serum was scientifically tested on women of colour to fight hyperpigmentation safely, without the risk of altering natural skintone. The star ingredient is amber algae, a unicellular microalgae which is sustainably harvested and proven to only target excess pigment without bleaching the skin, unlike other commonly used “brightening” chemicals.

We still have a few months of parka wearing, driveway salting and wind chill calculating ahead of us, but the countdown to spring (and the chance to ditch our beloved puffers) is on. And just like our wardrobe, our beauty routine deserves a little seasonal refresh, too. As we say goodbye to winter, the season’s warmer hues and our dry skin, we welcome fresh complexions, bold accents and the sense of optimism and reinvention that spring brings. To prepare, we asked Essie’s global lead educator and celebrity nail artist Rita Remark and Maybelline New York’s lead makeup artist in Canada, Grace Lee, about the top spring 2022 beauty trends (and how to update our makeup and nail kits accordingly).

Skin is in

This is the reminder you’ve been waiting for: stop skipping your nighttime skincare routine. You don’t want to be caught slipping when complexion is the main character this spring. Lee anticipates that minimalism will be the foundation philosophy when things warm up. “It’s all about achieving good looking skin without having to apply heavy layers of foundation,” says Lee. To nail the your-skin-but-better-look, she recommends stocking up on a mistake-proof tinted base and applying it only where really needed to keep things looking light. For beauty minimalists-in-training, consider it the ultimate one-step base layer that can easily take the place of a primer, foundation, concealer and highlighter.

Move over matte

Gloss is back in a big way. There’s something very Y2K about finishing off your look with a shimmery lip gloss, and since the early aughts is very in ATM, this trend is perfectly timed. You can even incorporate the wet look effect by bringing the gloss up to your eyelids. Since lacquered lips can still get dry (it’s a thing, and it’s the worst), this hydrating formula is a must-try since it leaves behind a long-lasting, high-shine finish, and is just as moisturizing as a balm.

Pretty Peri, please

“Unlike some previous years, the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2022 is an exceptional shade for nails,” says Remark. Pantone’s newly created hue, Very Peri, is a lilac blue that feels vibrant and hopeful without being over the top. Plus, it’s garden-inspired, and spring florals will always be a thing, Miranda Priestly be damned. “Periwinkle is so wearable and the perfect winter-to-spring transition colour,” Remark adds. If you’re averse to extra bold manis but still want to incorporate a bit of Very Peri, ask your manicurist for Lavender Water by Gelcare. If you’re down to go all in, this vibrant purple-blue is the shade to try.

The higher the brows, the closer to God

Lee anticipates that “full, uplifted brows” will be the shape du jour this spring. So if Omicron is causing you to feel rudderless without your regular brow touch ups, this one’s for you. Get the look by softly filling in your brows, then brushing them upward with a strong-hold brow gel. This one fluffs your brows with an oomph that rivals a fresh brow lamination, plus it’s packed with good-for-you ingredients like Vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid to keep them full and healthy.

Bold lips only

Spring beauty trends 2022

When we asked Lee what’s on her beauty trends moodboard for spring 2022, she said it’s full of vibrant colours. “There’s way more pop than I’m used to,” she shares, “but, I think that it’s because I want to see more vibrancy now.” On top of the already popular bold eyeshadow trend, she predicts that underneath our masks, we’ll be sporting high-frequency lip shades. Expect a wave of reds, pinks and magentas, such as the lip looks we saw at Giambattista Valli and Michael Kors. For a bold lip that won’t be completely rubbed off by your mask, try a stain formula — just be sure to give it a little bit of time to dry-down before heading out.

Space-inspired tips

A post shared by Rita Remark (@ritaremark)

Remark predicts that spring’s must-have nail art will be all about the great outdoors…and perhaps the great unknown.  “Think constellations, geodes, and watercolour effects,” she explains. For a milky way-inspired mani that you can DIY, all you’ll need are two nail polish colours, tweezers, a small sponge, and a dotting tool (or anything with a tiny tip, like a toothpick.) Remark says to start with a dark base, like navy or black, then sponge on (try using a small piece of a cosmetic wedge) a pastel shade with tweezers. To add stars to your constellation, apply a metallic silver with your dotting tool or use a glittery topcoat.

Nars has released a new Light Reflecting Advanced Skincare Foundation in 35 shades, including a new loose setting powder and an expansion of shades for its much-loved pressed powder. To up the ante, the brand is also releasing a Light Reflecting skincare collection (look for it in stores and online next month), which will also focus on boosting luminosity. The new liquid, medium-coverage foundation has sensitive skin in mind and has been formulated with 81 percent natural ingredients and without silicone, mineral oil, talc, fragrance or alcohol.

YSL drops a new mascara to swoon over

Boasting the largest brush (at 10.5 millimetres in diameter) and thickest volumizing formula ever created in its lab, YSL Beauté has released its newest patents-pending mascara, Lash Clash. With a unique formula which contains an oil-in-water wax, long-wear boosters and hyper-black pigments, the mega-volume mascara claims to build your lashes to incredible thickness layer by layer (YSL suggests applying in five simple strokes) and wear for 24 hours, without the need to be waterproof. Packaged in bold black instead of the brand’s trademark flashy gold, the fragrance-free mascara also contains iris florentina extract sourced from its Ourika community gardens co-op in Morocco to help keep your fringe soft and supple.

Queer Eye’s JVN makes over your hair

I think we can all agree that Jonathan Van Ness’s luscious locks could give us all a run for our money. Now you can cop that gorgeous shine, honey, with a few drops of JVN’s new Complete Nourishing Shine Drops. The product is lightweight, colour-safe and silicone-free so you can use it on dry hair daily for maximum light reflection that Van Ness describes as downright “prismatic.” Natural meadowfoam esters and squalane are also included to help nourish and hydrate your hair for silky results sans frizz.

A new high-powered serum to banish dark spots

Specifically targeted to ditching hyperpigmentation, Vichy’s new ultra-fluid serum contains 5 per cent niacinamide (also known as B3), along with glycolic and tranexamic acids and vitamin Cg (a synthetic form of vitamin c) — all highly effective skin brighteners. Smartly packaged in a squeeze-drop bottle, you can apply two to three drops morning and night without exposing the formula to excess air or the bacteria on your hands. Layer it under your existing serums and creams and you’ve got yourself the ultimate skincare wingman.

Your eyes can soon be ready for their close-up

New Clinique Eye Cream

It’s said that the delicate skin around our eyes is about 10 times thinner than the rest of our face. It’s no surprise then that with all of our daily squinting, laughing, smiling and you know, expression, that it doesn’t take much for fine lines and wrinkles to take shape. Add gravity and other everyday skin stressors, such as UV exposure, to the mix, and our eye creams start to feel like a ride or die part of our routine. Clinique’s latest Smart Clinical Repair Wrinkle Correcting Eye Cream seems primed for the task with no less than eight active ingredients, such as multiple proprietary peptides that specifically target aging skin, whey protein (rich in amino acids) and St. Paul’s wort for collagen production, and glycerin, sucrose and hyaluronic acid, which all help to hydrate and plump. Shea and mango butters help to smooth out the area and leave you feeling prepared to move your face as you see fit.

After ten years of development, Chanel released No.1 this week, a new range of skincare and makeup and a fragrance mist based on sustainable initiatives and extracts from the red camellia flower. The standout Revitalizing Serum contains 95 per cent natural ingredients, 76 per cent of which are derived from the red camellia. The flower, which Chanel harvests by hand on sustainable and organic farms in Gaujacq in the south of France, was chosen not only as a long-standing icon of the brand, but also for its long-studied positive effects on “senescence.” The latter refers to when your cells stop effectively dividing and being released from your body (which is required for skin repair and a younger-looking complexion) largely due to environmental stressors. No. 1 is also being presented in reduced packaging with partly-recycled materials (some of which include camellia seed shells) and ditching its traditional cellophane wraps and paper inserts. Since the red camellia is actually a naturally odourless plant, the entire range including the fragrance mist is scented with a combination of rose, jasmine, orange flower and juicy red fruit notes, created by famed Chanel nose Olivier Polge.

A new copper peptide serum from Biossance

Squalene-based brand Biossance has become a skincare favourite thanks to its natural ingredient list and celeb fan base. (Reese Witherspoon liked it so much she became a global ambassador for the brand and we’re sure we’re not the only ones to have spotted it as a favourite on the latest Queer Eye season thanks to fellow brand supporter JVN.) While squalene itself is a plant-derived substance with mega-hydrating properties, Biossance’s latest serum has been super-charged with copper peptides that support collagen production and help to improve skin’s elasticity. The copper peptide also lends the serum a unique, natural blue hue which somehow makes it feel extra refreshing when you smooth it on.

In anticipation of Bridgerton’s season two premiere on March 25, the Regency-inspired makeup features royally outfitted (in Bridgerton blue, no less) palettes for the eyes, cheeks and face that are truly fit for a Duchess.

Dior Forever Foundation is back

Dior Forever first launched as a full-coverage foundation in 2007, and like many a millennial must-have, has become new again. Newly formulated to wear more like a second skin than ever, the creamy makeup is transfer-free and designed to resist extreme heat and humidity, while also helping you to counteract the effects of stress and fatigue on your face for 24 hours. Both the matte and luminous finish formulas contain a new skincare base of floral extracts, including rose hip oil and hibiscus acid respectively, as well as iris, pansy and nasturtium extracts. The collection is available in 43 shades with a wide variety of nuanced undertones, including: neutral, warm, warm peach, warm olive, cool and cool rosy.

Waking up in pitch dark, frigid conditions in order to get to work on time doesn’t always inspire enthusiasm for kicking off the day on a high note. However, this week Dermalogica threw its hat in the ring with its new Awaken Peptide Eye Gel which contains the all-important “but first, caffeine” to help with puffiness, as well as tetrapeptides and rosemary leaf extract which work to refresh and brighten tired eyes, as well as reduce the appearance of fine lines over time. Ready, steady: join meeting.

The post-holiday slump of winter weather, steep credit card bills, and the months-long countdown ‘til Spring all add up to January notoriously offering up the most depressing day of the year. However, these January 2022 beauty launches can help you shake off the shadow of a sometimes-intimidating new year with tried-and-true, results-driven ingredients, no-brainer makeup and some self-care treats complete with mood-boosting, romantic florals.

Fresh Floral Recovery Mask

Looking for a way to welcome the first month of the year that doesn’t require ditching carbs or your favourite Pinot? Enter, Fresh’s new overnight recovery mask. The first in the much-loved collection formulated especially for sensitive skin (read: those that experience redness, irritation and tingling) the creamy, cocoon-like formula contains four flowers specifically chosen for their ability to calm, nourish and refresh your complexion. “I’ve always been inspired by the natural power of flowers and wanted to put them on my face since the launch of Rose Face Mask in 2001,” says Fresh founder Lev Glazman. “We selected passionflower, cornflower, peony and cherry blossom for their ability to soothe and help with visible redness.” Vitamin c and squalene round out the mix to help balance, brighten and hydrate holiday-worn faces.

Diptyque Limited Edition Eau Rose Collection

If you’re ready to light up a fresh scent that doesn’t involve nary a hint of pine or cranberry et al., get excited for Diptyque’s new collaboration with L.A. florist Maurice Harris. The limited edition collection is Harris’s whimsical take on the brand’s classic Eau Rose scent, complete with new accords of chamomile, litchi and, yes,  artichoke. Each candle comes in a gorgeously illustrated jar and box (a perfect Valentine’s gift, bien sûr) and can be lit all together to achieve the scent of the whole Eau Rose bouquet. Those who fall in love with the combined scent can also snag it in the limited eau de parfum and toilette.

Hourglass Equilibrium Instant Plumping Eye Mask

Our eyes are often the first thing to give us away when we haven’t exactly been keeping up with our ideal sleep schedule or cutting back on inflammatory foods. Now you can still give off those elusive bright-eyed and bushy-tailed vibes with the help of this new gel eye mask from Hourglass which directly targets puffiness and dark circles. Apply it for 15 minutes once you get out of the shower or while styling your hair, then simply massage or tissue away the excess for an instant pick-me-up before your usual makeup application.

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Anniversary Edition

Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder

World-renowned French makeup artist Laura Mercier is celebrating 25 years since launching her namesake collection. To mark the occasion, the brand is releasing a jumbo-sized collector’s edition of its loose setting powder, one of its most popular and best-selling products (it’s the number one selling powder in several international markets) and also one of Mercier’s first products, period. Available in three universal tones, the invisible powder is a favourite among makeup fans and pros alike for its finely-milled texture and 16-hour flawless finish. The limited edition features illustrations by popular English artist Kit Agar, who was chosen by Mercier herself and is known for her abstract linear face drawings.

Evio Revitalizing Oil Serum

After clocking customer feedback, Toronto-based brand Evio is relaunching its oil-based serum in a larger size and easier-to-use dropper. The serum is great for all skin types and works as a moisture barrier for your skin (hello, indoor heating) while also nourishing it with nine plant-based oils, including antioxidant-rich hemp seed and rose hip oils. Its non-sticky, non-greasy formula makes it great for smoothing on anytime, but the gentle lavender scent makes it particularly soothing pre-bedtime.

Dior Rouge Dior Balm

Created by Peter Philips, the creative and image director for Dior makeup, the latest must-have lip launch from the brand feels like perfect addition to your lippy stash for the colder months, especially for wearing under the obligatory masks and scarves. Inspired by a romantic floral bouquet, the 95 per cent natural-origin balms provide 24-hour hydration with shea butter, as well as extracts of red peony, fig and pomegranate blossoms, and red hibiscus flowers. The velvety balm imparts a luxe veil of weightless-feeling colour in satin, matte and velvet finishes and 18 shades, including a colourless balm and the iconic 999 red.

Revlon So Fierce! Eyes Wide Open Mascara

Available in both waterproof and standard formulas, Revlon’s new smudge-proof, 24-hour wear mascara thickens and lifts lashes for ultimate-volume without the heavy, waxy texture. The lightweight formula is also infused with hemp seed oil to condition your fringe for long, healthy lashes. The “push-up” brush is uniquely outfitted with six product reservoirs, so you can coat each and every tiny hair with every swipe and skip the pumping (which inevitably just fills the tube with air and dries out your precious formula).

Lancôme Rénergie H.C.F. Triple Serum

New Lancôme Serum January 2022 beauty launches

This new performance-packed serum from Lancôme combines three high-powered ingredients often proffered on their own and seldom seen in combination: plumping hyaluronic acid, brightening vitamin c and niacinamide, and firming ferulic acid. Driven by years of bioengineering research, the formula allows the active ingredients to be applied at an optimal concentration to treat your unique combination of skin goals, including fine lines, density and dark spots. To keep each ingredient at its most active, and be able to combine together effectively, the tube contains a separate vial for each to ensure it is protected from oxidizing in air, light or combining with other impurities.

Heat and colour damage is hard to repair, plain and simple, and, to be honest, it can be one of the most discouraging parts of your natural curly hair care journey, especially when it’s due to methods you’ve used with the intention of actually elevating your style. However, there is hope at the end of this frizzy, split-end tunnel. With a little effort and the right mix of ingredients and methods, your hair can easily (read: with patience) return to its former glory.

If you’re wondering how tools and chemicals designed for hair actually create this damage in the first place, you’re not alone. The short answer is major damage to your hair’s cuticle. Both straightening and dyeing your hair lifts the hair’s cuticle and opens your hair up to further damage. Anything you do from this point on is to repair the outer cuticle of your hair in an attempt to bring back that healthy appearance. We spoke to Toronto-based hairstylist Sally John to get some of her top tips to repair damage and restore volume, moisture and shine to your curly hair.

A post shared by Oribe (@oribe)

Establish a realistic routine

No matter what your hair goals are, having an established routine will help you get there. John recommends going for regular trims and talking with your stylist to assess your goals. Have them evaluate your hair, assess the damage and recommend specific products to add to your routine, including a shampoo and conditioner that will help ease your ravaged hair. If you’re trying to repair curly hair damage due to colour-processing, use a colour-safe shampoo to help minimize touch-ups (and further damage). A root touch-up spray can also help you cover up pesky greys or roots in between appointments to minimize your hair’s exposure to dye.

A post shared by OLAPLEX (@olaplex)

Rebuild broken bonds

John reminds us that one of the tell-tale signs of damaged, textured hair is when it gets knotted at the drop of a hat. “If your hair is tangling, it’s probably because you have split ends,” she says. This is particularly true for tighter textures. John advises to keep an eye out for single strand knots, especially during the detangling process. To battle tattered ends, it’s important to establish and maintain a deep conditioning routine. Look for a concentrated treatment which will help to strengthen and repair bonds overtime.

Try a hot oil treatment

One of the first signs of damaged hair is a noticeable loss of moisture. High protein oils like coconut oil and castor oil are well known for their ability to deeply penetrate the hair shaft as well as restore moisture and shine to hair that has lost its lustre. When applying this type of treatment, it’s best to start at your scalp and work your way down, so your roots can get some much-needed TLC. Mix your favourite oils in an applicator bottle and then place the bottle in hot water to heat up (do not microwave!). Once you’ve applied the oils to your scalp (always test for temperature safety first) cover your hair with a shower cap and let the treatment work its magic for 30 minutes. Rinse, condition and wait for your glorious shine to be restored. Repeat once a week, as needed.

Limit styling and protect your hair overnight

Protecting your hair while you sleep can go a long way. If you’re using a standard cotton pillowcase, the friction from your head moving alone can contribute to waking up with frizz and split ends. Instead, wrap your hair with a silk scarf or use a silk pillowcase, which will help to minimize stress on your strands. Anytime you attempt to style your hair, there is the chance of causing further damage. John recommends putting your hair into a protective style such as braids or a weave, to limit how much you manipulate your hair on a daily basis. “Sew-ins are great because you can play with colour and length without having to commit. Wigs can also be a good alternative, but look for a style that can be installed without glue, which can be damaging in its own right,” she says. You should also be weary of having a protective style installed with too much tension, which can also be the cause of thinning and hair loss, especially around your hairline. “If you feel like your weave or extensions have been installed too tightly, tell your stylist before you leave their chair,” says John. A few weeks with a too-tight install can take months, or even years, to repair. To help repair thinning edges, ensuring they are constantly moisturized is the best method to encourage growth. Use a leave-in cream daily and implement a repairing hair mask multiple times a week. “Applying castor oil along your edges before bed is your best friend,” adds John.

Lana Ogilvie started her modelling career at 17 and moved to NYC soon after, where she quickly appeared on the covers of Vogue, Marie Claire and Elle and in endless campaigns, including Ralph Lauren, Bergdorf Goodman, DKNY, Victoria’s Secret and Guess. We asked the industry veteran about how her 30 years in the business inspired her self-care journey and planted the seed for eventually launching her own skincare range, Lana Ogilvie Cosmetics.

You were the first person of colour to be signed to CoverGirl. How do you think the modelling industry has changed or not changed enough, in recent years?

Certainly in regards to representation, everyone is trying to be more inclusive. It’s not necessarily equal representation, but more inclusive representation. You may have a certain number of white models in a shot along with one Asian or Black woman. Because, you wouldn’t normally have two of those ethnicities in one group, right!? That doesn’t make sense! So, while people are striving for more inclusivity and more diversity, it’s not always equal.

Lana Ogilvie Cosmetics
Photography Courtesy of Lana Ogilvie

What did you learn about taking care of yourself throughout your modelling career?

I spent so much time with different makeup artists who used so many different products on me. I really started seeing my skin react really adversely to many things. I have eczema and my skin is already quite sensitive and reactive. I had formulas give me hives, make my eyes swell shut, and cause massive rashes. I quickly started paying attention to what was safe for me to use and not use when I was at work. After a while, I also started asking myself why that was and looking into what was consistent with these products. I eventually realized that I really needed to personally avoid synthetic fragrances and colours and ingredients like parabens, silicone, and mineral oil.

Winters in Canada can be pretty harsh on the skin, especially for those that have irritations such as eczema and rosacea. How do you cope with that?

Layering is the thing. You have to start with the least occlusive layer. So, if you have a light serum, you start with that. Then a lotion or cream and an oil. Layering is a really good way for anybody with dry skin to lock in hydration. For daytime, I use my serum first. It’s a water-based serum, so it soaks in quite quickly. Then, I use the Reflect Facial Lotion and then layer that with the Renew Facial Oil, followed by sunscreen. The oil is really lovely and also soaks in quickly, so you’re not sitting around for ages with an oily-looking face before putting on makeup. It also has a wonderful orange colour which naturally comes from the sea buckthorn and rose hip oils. It gives you an instant glow on top of hydrating your skin. At night, I like to apply my eye cream to the lines around my eyes, between my eyebrows and even on my forehead. Like many eye creams, it has a higher concentration of actives, so it’s great for spot treating fine lines. Then I layer on face oil again.

What else was important for you to consider when creating your skincare line, Lana Ogilvie Cosmetics?

I’ve been a skincare addict for so long. It’s something I love and it’s always been a passion of mine. I put a lot of effort and research into the formulas because I think of it as personal treatments for my own skin. There’s so many people with skincare issues and I was really motivated to formulate without the bad stuff so it could be a good solution for more people. I worked with a Canadian lab, which was also very important to me. I wanted to come out with a Canadian line by a Black Canadian woman. Someone who’s been in this industry for many years and who knows this space firsthand.

A lot of skincare these days feels overly complex, but you’ve obviously avoided that approach with Lana Ogilvie Cosmetics.

A lot of things out there are complicated, but this is really streamlined and easy to use. I started out with three products: the serum, the eye cream, and the face oil. The serum is a triple threat with peptides, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid. This year, we also launched the lotion that filters the blue light and the UV rays that you’re exposed to during all your screen time. After talking to customers, we sourced an algae that works to protect the skin because everybody’s at home sitting in front of their phones and computers.

Grown at the base of a volcano by organic micro-farmers, the white grape variety thrives in extreme conditions by drawing self-renewing energy and minerals from the soil to withstand the extreme wind and sun. Added to this gel-like cream, along with salicylic and hyaluronic acids, the formula is ideal for combination skin that requires loads of hydration. The lightweight cream will work to keep acne-prone skin in balance while also promoting even texture and less shine.

Toronto-based, Indigenous-owned brand Wildcraft has launched a new sustainably-sourced and biodegradable cleanser and silk sea sponge, which makes using the cleanser not only easier, but a total pleasure. The cleanser is gentle enough for all skin types, but especially ideal for those with oily skin or who are prone to breakouts. It contains Mediterranean purple clay to absorb excess oil and naturally-occurring salicylic acid from willow bark to help gently exfoliate and nix the buildup of dead skin cells. Chamomile extract is also included to help soothe irritation and reduce inflammation. The 100% natural sponge is biodegradable and its high mineral and enzyme content make it beneficial for cleaning all skin types (face and body) and can be used for months without the worry of bacteria growth or nasty odours.
