1970s, ’80s and ’90s kids will recall that there was nothing more electrifying than the novelty of slipping on their mood ring each morning and watching its stone change hues before their very eyes. Today, Gen Z has discovered the wonder of colour-changing products via makeup — an extension of the customization trend that has permeated the beauty industry over the past several years. Colour-changing makeup products (typically lipstick and blush) are pH-activated and powered by a chemical reaction between the product’s ingredients and the wearer’s skin. What could be more customized than that?

RELATED: The Spring 2023 Beauty Trends to Wear Now

“pH is the measure of how acidic an environment is,” explains Alessandro Mendes, vice-president of research and innovation at Cosmetica Laboratories Inc. in Toronto. The level of acidity in anything, from our skin to a swimming pool, can be determined using the scientific scale of pH, which ranges from 0 to 14 (with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most basic). Healthy skin naturally stabilizes around the 5 to 5.5 mark.

What causes the colour-changing phenomenon in makeup products is the interaction between skin and an ingredient called bromo acid dye, a type of pigment commonly used in these products. The pH level of the skin that this dye is exposed to upon application determines the shade.

What causes the colour-changing phenomenon in makeup products is the interaction between skin and an ingredient called bromo acid dye.

“When you have a product that looks transparent or translucent in its packaging, for instance, it means that the level of pigment we can see with our eyes is very low,” says Mendes. “The reason we don’t see it until it’s applied is that the pH of the product is higher than the skin’s level of 5.5.” When the two come into contact, the pH levels react to each other, forming a shade that’s unique to the wearer.

Since the pH of everyone’s skin is generally around the same level, getting different hues from person to person relies on a few other factors, too. These include complexion shade, where on the face the product is applied (for example, the pH of the skin on our lips is higher than on the rest of our face) and even how dry or hydrated the skin is. While the differences in the shades and intensity of pH-adapting makeup from person to person may be subtle to the naked eye, as far as unique-to-each-wearer makeup goes, colour-changing products may just be customizable beauty’s final frontier.

Below, discover some of the hottest shade-changing lip products to join in on the fun.

In a world where mermaidcore is thriving, Maison Francis Kurkdjian is riding the wave. The beloved fragrance brand is expanding its Aqua fragrance line with the fourth launch within the collection— a fresh, new eau de parfum named Aqua Media Cologne forte. Aptly deriving its name from the Latin word for middle, Aqua Media represents the middle point between light and freshness. Its glimmering bottle is inspired by the shade of green that appears at the centre of a rainbow prism, brought on by a combination of water and sunlight. With key notes of Calabrian bergamot, verbena accord, and woody musks, this fragrance leaves behind a fresh, citrusy aroma fit for summertime.

Allow Jane Fonda to Explain What It Means to Live Intentionally https://fashionmagazine.com/beauty-grooming/celebrity-beauty/jane-fonda-cannes-2023/ Mon, 29 May 2023 15:34:06 +0000 https://fashionmagazine.com/?p=470921 Jane Fonda needs no introduction, but just for fun, here’s my attempt at one: The multi-talented icon is an Oscar-winning actress, activist, author, philanthropist, executive producer, L’Oréal Paris spokesperson, and my personal life coach. Jane Fonda needs no introduction, but just for fun, here’s my attempt at one: The multi-talented icon is an Oscar-winning actress, activist, author, philanthropist, executive producer, L’Oréal Paris spokesperson, and my personal life coach. OK, the latter is not entirely true, but it certainly felt that way as we chatted on a video call.

RELATED: For Helen Mirren, Feeling Beautiful Is All About Swagger

“What I’ve learned over the years is that what really makes you look good is if you’re curious and happy,” says Fonda, who’s calling from the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. “If you’re interested and happy, that shows in your face.” She says that when she looks back at photos of her that were taken during not-so-happy times in her life, she can immediately see that reflected in the way she looked. “Often it would mean I was wearing too much makeup.” These days, Fonda is much more concerned with caring for her skin than she is with piling on makeup. It’s also why she’s the face of L’Oréal Paris’ Age Perfect Rosy Tone Skincare line. Fonda has been working with the brand for 15 years, something that she says continues to amaze her. “I’m still working for L’Oréal Paris, at my age. I have to pinch myself sometimes.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jane Fonda (@janefonda)

Speaking of pinching (stay with me for a second), Fonda shares that she only began paying attention to her looks after starring alongside Katharine Hepburn in 1981’s On Golden Pond. “She made it very clear to me that she did not like the fact that I didn’t pay much attention to how I looked. She came up behind me one day and took my cheek between her fingers and said, ‘This is what you present to the world.’ She wanted me to be more self-aware about how I presented myself. And I think I’ve followed her advice and I do pay more attention now. It’s why I let my hair go grey, to match my face. Not because my face is grey,” she laughs. “But you know, I’m 85 now.”

Fonda’s advice for overall good health, good skin and good vibes? (My words, not hers.) Praying, exercising, meditating, and living intentionally. But what does that mean, I ask? “OK, here’s the metaphor. You’re in a canoe on a river and you have no oar or paddle, right?” (Right.) “So the tide takes you wherever it wants to take you and you have no control.” Fonda says living intentionally is putting your oar in the water and steering. “It took me quite a long time in my life to learn to put an oar in the water and steer myself. But I did learn to do it, and I think that’s why I feel pretty good now at my age.”

Before we wrap our call, I confess to my new life coach that I’m a hopeless meditator, having repeatedly tried and failed to pick up the good-for-you practice. “You need a good mantra,” says Fonda. I ask what hers is, in the hope that it’ll provide inspiration for my own. “Oh, once you have one, you can never share it,” she says. “You can’t repeat it to anyone.”

You learn something new (from Jane Fonda) every day.

How to Find Your Signature Scent https://fashionmagazine.com/sponsored-content/find-your-signature-scent-guess/ Mon, 29 May 2023 10:00:46 +0000 https://fashionmagazine.com/?p=470122 Three easy tips to help you find your new favourite fragrance.

The post How to Find Your Signature Scent appeared first on FASHION Magazine.

]]>
Nothing makes a lasting impression quite like a captivating signature scent. If you haven’t found the one for yourself just yet, don’t be intimidated. Selecting a fragrance might seem like a daunting task, but a few simple tips and tricks can make the process a lot easier. All you need to do is consider your favourite fragrance families, lifestyle factors and the season. For example, if you’re into floral and fruity scents that make you feel empowered, try the luxurious GUESS Bella Vita. With notes of zesty Italian lemon, enchanting jasmine and warm amberwood, the fragrance is all about embracing your mysterious feminine side. Read on for helpful tips to help you confidently choose a fragrance that represents your own unique style and personality.

Identify your favourite scent families

There are five fragrance families to know about before you begin your research. Floral scents include romantic notes like jasmine, freesia and lily of the valley, while fresh scents include lighter notes, for example, lavender, lemon and bergamot. If you want something warmer, try the amber family (think labdanum, coumarin and nutmeg) or more woody scents with notes of sandalwood, myrrh and patchouli. If you like sweet smells, go for gourmand (which can include cocoa, coffee and vanilla to name a few). Not sure where to start? Think about bath and beauty products you love. Are you a fan of vanilla? Or do you dream about fresh roses? Identifying which notes you like the most can help you figure out what to look for in a fragrance.

Remember that a fragrance is made up of top notes, middle notes (often referred to as ‘the heart’) and base notes. The top notes make the first impression, while the middle notes can be smelled starting 20 minutes after application, and the base note tends to linger on skin and clothing.

GUESS Bella Vita has playful top notes of lemon, juicy cassis and luscious black cherries, with velvety white floral middle notes of jasmine, tuberose and vanilla orchid. The base notes, a warm blend of amberwood, tonka bean, praline and fluffy musks, leave a sweet and unforgettable trail.

Choose scents that suit your lifestyle

When choosing a fragrance, consider the occasion you’ll be wearing it for. Is this going to be an everyday scent you wear to work? Or is it a special scent you want for a romantic date? It’s important to think about how you want to feel while wearing the fragrance too. If you’re looking for something light and fresh you can wear to the gym and then the office, you might want an energizing fragrance with aquatic, light floral or zesty notes. Or, if you want to feel sexy and confident during a night out with friends, a scent with notes of amber and vanilla could be ideal. GUESS Bella Vita is a great option for the woman who lives her life to the fullest, always seeking out a new adventure while forging her own path. The hypnotic scent is undeniably sensual and celebrates unique beauty.

Find the perfect scent for the season

When in doubt, think about which season you’re in. Amber and woody notes are great options for winter and fall (there’s nothing quite as luxurious as a woolly sweater that smells like warm spices). For spring and summer, fresh and floral scents are ideal—notes like grapefruit and jasmine evoke thoughts of a sunny day in a gorgeous garden. A gourmand fragrance is a fun option for a summer night, especially when love is in the air.

GUESS Bella Vita is one of those rare fragrances that works for every season all year round, since it’s vibrant, sensual and warm all at once. Even the opulent design of the bottle, which features the iconic GUESS peony medallion, is timeless.

With these pro tips, you’ll be able to find the signature scent you’ve always dreamed of to leave a lasting impression wherever you go.

This week in Toronto, local media and beauty influencers gathered to witness the unveiling of Sephora Canada’s new interactive installation: Sephora Illumination, powered by Colour iQ. Designed using over 140,000 shades of Canadian skin tones acquired through the use of Sephora’s Colour iQ technology, the installation aims to showcase the diversity of beauty across the country. Triggered by movement, Sephora Illumination displays thousands of animated skin-toned particles that swirl in mesmerizing formations to deliver a one-of-a-kind visual experience to each observer.

At the unveiling on May 24, beauty brand founders Danessa Myricks of her eponymous label and Basma Hameed of Basma Beauty engaged in an inspiring panel discussion about their paths to breaking into the beauty industry as women of colour. Both women — whose brands are available in Sephora — seek to cater to all skin tones and types in their product portfolios, making them and their work the perfect embodiment of the diversity reflected in the installation.

“The fact that somebody is recognizing that [all of] these skin tones exist is the first really big statement,” Myricks shared with FASHION on the power of the Colour iQ service that fuelled the instillation. “If I think about my journey through beauty and how much easier it would’ve been for me to just walk into a store where somebody could just scan me and tell me all of the things in the building that worked for me — I think that’s genius.”

If you’re in Toronto, you can head to 100 Bloor Street West (right across the street from the Sephora Canada store) between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. from now until June 1 to check out the installation for yourself, at no cost. Plus, Sephora Canada advisors will be on-site providing Colour iQ shade matches (which are also available in Sephora stores) to all visitors. Run, don’t walk!

Saie Beauty Glow Sculpt is here

Combining everything we love about blush and highlighter into one conveniently refillable compact, Saie Beauty just dropped Glow Sculpt. Within this product, colourful bursts of blush meet smooth micro-pearl particles to deliver a weightless glow that has just the right amount of pigment. Available in five shades, you can play with colours across the spectrum from cool pinks to rich bronze shades in the same areas you’d apply your blush or highlight. Accompanying this launch is a brand-new dual-ended makeup brush called The Double Brush, which goes hand-in-hand with your new Glow Sculpt.

Glow Recipe launches a plumping lip gloss balm

Why choose between lip gloss and lip balm when you can have both? Glow Recipe’s latest Plum Plump Hyaluronic Gloss Balm is the best of both worlds. This lip-loving formula is formulated with antioxidant-rich ingredients like vitamin C packed kakadu plum, hydration hero hyaluronic acid, and soothing raspberry. Whether you use it as lip prep, a lip treatment, or on top of your favourite liner, this product will keep your lips juicy and glossy all day long.

Canadian beauty brand The Cure Skincare has an enticing product lineup full of clean, vegan, and genderless skincare made out east in Nova Scotia, and they’ve just added their first-ever face and eye cream to the collection. Harnessing the power of coffee seed extract at the base of its formula, this cream brightens skin while also drawing upon hyaluronic acid and the brand’s star Irish sea moss ingredients to help plump up, refine, and hydrate your complexion.

Grown Alchemist revamps an original formula

Since Grown Alchemist sought out to rework their original Detox Serum formula, the final outcome is a stronger, creamier new serum named the Skin Renewal Serum. Hydration levels and reparative benefits have been amped up thanks to hyaluronic acid and peptides, as well as five more active ingredients than the OG formula. A supercharging treat for our skin, this serum is clinically proven to strengthen the skin barrier by up to 27 per cent in just 12 hours, and 36 per cent in a month of use. We’re liking the sound of those numbers.

Cardea AuSet drops a floral face mask fit for spring

Photography Courtesy of Cardea AuSet

Flowers aren’t the only thing in bloom this month! Cardea AuSet just announced the release of a hydrating floral mask named Bloom that sounds like a spring skincare staple. Coming from a brand already known for its plant-based products, this face mask is a seamless addition to the collection. And what would a plant-powered face mask named Bloom be without a little rose oil? This star ingredient keeps the skin barrier nourished and looking radiant as a fresh flower.

To bang, or not to bang — that is always the question.

Bangs often get a bad rap. It’s easy to get scissor-happy and snip away at our fringe until it winds up too short…or in a regrettable bowl cut. You either love ’em or hate ’em, but there’s no denying a solid set of bangs when you spot them.

RELATED: Dyson Debuts the Airstrait, a Revolutionary Wet-to-dry Hair Straightener

This summer, when it comes to bangs our vote is a resounding yes — and it appears that celebrities on the 2023 Cannes Film Festival red carpet, from Dua Lipa to Blackpink’s Rosé, are in agreement. At the star-studded two-week-long event, we’ve witnessed plenty of things worth mentioning: the return of exposed bras, Jennifer Lawrence in flip-flops, Elle Fanning in her slay era — and bangs. Lots and lots of bangs, of all kinds.

From chic micro-bangs to full-on fringes, we present to you the best bang hairstyles worn by your favourite stars at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Dua Lipa

For her Cannes debut, Dua Lipa walked the red carpet with jet-black, piece-y bangs that swept over her eyes and down all the way to her jawline. Stylist to the stars Rio Sreedharan sculpted Lipa’s cool-girl fringe as part of a deliberately undone French twist updo. When in Cannes, ’do as the French ’do, non?

Naomi Campbell

Naomi Campbell has never been one to shy away from a bang, and we’re grateful for it. This supermodel brought her signature black bangs to Cannes, and they were as blunt as ever, falling just beneath her eyebrows. The stylist responsible? Lorenzo Barcella, who often collaborates with Naomi to craft long lengths and avant-garde haircuts for major editorial moments.

Rosé

To mark her first time at the Cannes film festival, Blackpink’s Rosé unveiled a cutesy set of rose gold (ha!) tinted micro-bangs. In an Instagram post by the K-pop star, we get a behind-the-scenes look at hairstylist Lee Seon-Yeong at work during the application process of what appears to be a clip-in bang — which is the perfect alternative to taking the plunge and snipping away at your natural hair.

Sabrina Elba

Opting for a full-on and fanned-out fringe, Sabrina Elba wowed us with this bold look. Also styled by the aforementioned Sreedharan — whose expertise is clearly a hot commodity in Cannes — we loved the way Elba’s brow-grazing bangs transitioned into an elaborately crafted spiked-out bun. Sophisticated bangs in the front, party in the back.

Nadia Lee Cohen

Creative visionary Nadia Lee Cohen stepped out with a fiery fringe peeking through the hood of her slinky Saint Laurent gown. Behind the style, Gonn Kinoshita worked to shape Cohen’s copper hair into a baby bang and a face-framing curl. “76th Cannes but my first!” writes Cohen in another Instagram post. With hair this good, we’re sure it won’t be her last.

Gemma Chan

This year at Cannes, international L’Oréal Paris hair artist and expert Stephane Lancien had a case of bang fever. His bang-wearing Cannes clientele included Aja Naomi King, Luma Grothe, and Gemma Chan. Chan was a ray of light on the red carpet in a white full-length Louis Vuitton gown that juxtaposed her choppy, forehead-covering bangs (which were also clip-ins!).

For this hairstyle carried out by global hair artist Aleksandra Sasha Nesterchuk, the top model’s pixie cut was transformed by plucking out pieces at the front of the head and creating individual C-shaped curls. Forget Barbie, this look was giving Betty Boop.

Of all the things that Succession‘s Roy family does best — plotting, scheming, arguing, and being the absolute worst in the very best way — this fictional empire is particularly ace at displaying their wealth through acts of quiet luxury dressing. But a closer look at the beauty products they use proves that the concept of stealth wealth is not exclusive to their fashions.

RELATED: How to Achieve the Quiet Luxury Look On a Budget

In a recent scroll through TikTok, I stumbled upon a video from the @classofpalmbeach account where stylish subjects and socialites in the area are interviewed about their outfits. In the comments, one user writes, “It’s always fascinating to me how obvious it is when someone is rich… the glow lol.” Although the video was full of high-end fashion labels and stylistic details, what truly seemed to signify wealth to this commenter was the rich “glow” radiating through the screen.

It’s a luxury in and of itself to be unconcerned with common struggles like acne or split ends. For an affluent family like the Roys, thousand-dollar procedures and high-end skincare regimens will do all the work, so they can simply spend the dosh and be done with it. Skin that requires minimal makeup is the ultimate luxury, after all. There is no flashy symbol that suggests you’re wearing a $400 face cream, or a blaring signal that shows your hair has been styled with a product formulated by a celebrity stylist, yet there they are. There is only the rich glow.

To determine what it is that gives the Roys such an air of stealth wealth as it pertains to beauty, we’ve done a little sleuthing. We’ve observed and tracked down some of the high-end beauty products that appear in the background throughout the series.

Toward the end of the first episode of season 3, we find baby brother Roman (Kieran Culkin) pacing in a private airplane bathroom as he pleads for power over the phone with his father Logan (Brian Cox). In the background, a treasure trove of luxury beauty products is stocked on the shelves. First, there’s a bottle of salon-worthy and widely coveted Olaplex — which we’ve deduced is likely the brand’s No. 6 Bond Smoother hair styling treatment (thanks to the signature copper stripe across the bottle). On the same shelf, we see what appears to be a green product box of Origins skincare — potentially from its Mega-Mushroom skincare made in collaboration with celebrity Dr. Andrew Weil, and formulated with traditional plants, mushrooms, and herbs to optimize skin health and reduce stress (which is much needed in this family).

A couple of clips later, the celebrity product sightings continue when a lineup of Ouai hair products (A-list hairstylist Jen Atkin’s line) comes into view. A trio of the brand’s Detox Shampoo, and what we presume to be their leave-in conditioner treatment and super dry shampoo are neatly arranged on the shelf, in such plain sight that Atkin herself pointed out the feature on her Instagram story writing, “I am dead!!!! I love this show so much!” The mere implication that there is even an option to shower and wash your hair on the plane — much less with a high-end collection of beauty products lining the shelves of the plane bathroom — is a subtle brag about wealth, and a luxury few can afford. So what if the flight is hardly long enough for a full hair and skin routine? The point isn’t whether or not they use them, just that they’re there.

Later on that season, in episode 3, we catch a glimpse of Kendall’s (Jeremy Strong) bathroom sink, where a casual $385 skincare product rests, proving one of two things. Number one: though Kendall may undergo periods of feeling like his life is in shambles (when he’s not on a power trip), there is always the option of ensuring that at the very least, he can keep his skin in check. Or two: that he can afford to disregard a $385 cream when his life is in said shambles. The product in question? Augustinus Bader’s aptly titled The Rich Cream or its lighter companion The Cream — but knowing Kendall, he likely opted for the former, solely because of its name. Either way, this product will run you almost four hundred dollars. In return you get its patented TFC8 (Trigger Factor Complex) technology which nourishes skin while supporting cellular renewal.

Loved by Hollywood’s elite (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston, Margot Robbie, etc), Augustinus Bader is the German label that oozes quiet luxury. It’s something of an “if you know, you know” brand — instantly identifiable by its cobalt blue and copper-bodied packaging, but only if you’re a skincare aficionado. Or part of the upper echelon who actually uses it. What’s more, the meeting that led to the success of this eponymous brand reportedly took place at a billionaire’s dinner party where Bader met a Paris-based investor named Charles Rosier, who would become co-founder of the brand. And we wouldn’t assume that Kendall would use anything less than a product founded by a fellow member of a billionaire’s circle.

As for billionaire scion and Roy sister Shiv (Sarah Snook), there’s been a recent uptick in the internet’s interest in her beauty routine. One writer surmised that she’d have to be a “Dr. Barabara Sturm girl”. In a viral Into The Gloss post where each character was compared to a beauty product, Shiv was assigned Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. But alas, during season 4’s premiere episode, we’re placed in Shiv and Tom’s shared pre-divorce bedroom where an unmistakable tub of Tatcha’s $91 Dewy Skin Cream moisturizer is in clear view atop her dresser. As it turns out, Tatcha’s Japanese-inspired skincare line is Shiv’s brand of choice. This puts her in a class with real-life billionaire Kim Kardashian and former royalty Meghan Markle, who have been said to use these products. We think Shiv is a fitting addition to this crew. On the same dresser, a small silver tube sealed by a black lid that could possibly be a L’Occitane hand cream lies. Understated, yet still expensive, making it a suitable candidate for quiet luxury beauty.

A post shared by Succession (@succession)

In the penultimate episode of season four, the skincare saga continues. At the beginning of the episode, we see Roman reaching for a white tub of moisturizer. “A little dry,” he says before applying the cream. As Succession has the tendency to do, this lone moisturizer sparked a debate about what specific product he used. Beauty writer Kirbie Johnson and Dieux Skin co-founder Charlotte Palermino both took to Instagram with an initial hunch that it could be a La Mer moisturizer (likely The Soft Cream) because of the shape and material of the tub, the texture of the cream, and even the sound of the lid hitting the countertop. However, after posting her video, a follower who apparently worked on the set of the show DM’ed Palermino to inform her that it was in fact a Kiehl’s moisturizer (possibly The Ultra Facial Cream) used in the scene. Still, Johnson and a slew of Succession fans in the comments of each video remain skeptical. On one hand — like Palermino initially speculated — we’d probably expect Roman to use La Mer because of his “affinity for a certain demographic of women who tend to use La Mer” and because, well, it’s super expensive. On the other hand, if he’s this aware of his skin dryness, then Kiehl’s would be a solid fit. Either way, it’d make sense.

Is it a coincidence that some of these items are left in full view? Absolutely not. It all lends itself to the show’s obsession with stealth wealth. If you blink, you might miss it. But it’s there nonetheless. To shop the Roy beauty regimen, flip through the gallery below.

Situated in Antibes along the coastline of the French Riviera, Dior has unveiled a dreamy new destination spa inside the iconic Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc. A recent hotspot, you may also recognize this historic hotel as the site of the lavish Sofia Richie Grainge wedding that took place last month (we’re still not over it!). Nestled beneath Aleppo pine trees in the Cap-Eden-Roc gardens, there is a lush selection of sensorial experiences available at this Dior spa where treatment rooms overlook a century-old rose garden once dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II. Here, some of these lavish offerings include Hydrafacial powered treatments and four new customizable signature wellness rituals titled “Dioriginels” inspired by the four elements. From soothing stone massages to hydrotherapy treatments that ease muscular aches and pains, the brand is honing in on its holistic view of wellness and beauty. What’s more, an exclusive “Riviera Solar Glow” treatment that uses products from the Dior Solar range to help treat and protect the skin from sun exposure also awaits. Ooh, la la!

Beyoncé teases a hair brand

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)

Attention Beyhive, this is not a drill! This week, Queen Bey took to Instagram to drop an exciting teaser that is bound to shake up the beauty industry. The first slide of her post shows Beyoncé curling her hair in glam, and the second is a throwback shot of young Bey in a salon chair with a fresh set of braids. “How many of y’all knew my first job was sweeping hair in my Mama’s salon?” reads a digital note in the third slide of her post. Bey further explains that her former band, Destiny’s Child, first got its start performing for clients while they got their hair done. It was in the salon, she shares, where she was exposed to entrepreneurial women of all sorts and witnessed the impact that nurturing and celebrating our hair can have on our souls. “Having learned so much on my hair journey, I’ve always dreamed of carrying on her legacy. I can’t wait for you to experience what I’ve created,” she writes and signs off with a heart and a capital ‘B.’ Haircare? Wigs? Hair tools? Whatever it is, we’re ready for it. And if her current blonde mane moments on her Renaissance world tour are any indication — we’re already sold.

Vichy Laboratoires Minéral 89 is now available in two new formats

We’re sure skincare enthusiasts are already familiar with Vichy Laboratoires’ iconic Minéral 89 serum — and if you’re a fan, then you’re in luck. The ultra-hydrating serum has now been formulated into a brand new Minéral 89 72H Boosting Cream formula. Conveniently created in three different textures with all skin types in mind, you can choose from the fragrance-free, light or rich formula options to add to your skincare routine. For a double dose of hydration, layer the OG serum (which is still available!) with the new cream and thank us later.

Beautycounter’s newest lipsticks make a statement

Nothing makes a makeup statement quite like a bold lip — and Beautycounter just dropped a collection full of lipsticks that’ll do just that. Developed in collaboration with celebrity makeup artist Christy Coleman, the newly launched Statement Maker Satin Lipsticks come in 14 highly pigmented shades from subdued nudes to vibrant hues sure to make their mark. Each lipstick is formulated with nourishing açai oils, shea, mango butter and plant-based waxes that leave lips as soft as they are pigmented. Housed in post-consumer recycled packaging, this angled lipstick tube also doubles as a lip liner when flipped over.

Serumize debuts a new line of products

Founded by Elizabeth Shabi, a certified medical aesthetician and former senior chemist, Serumize is a beauty brand that truly understands the inner workings of skincare. Aiming to bridge the gap between prescribed skincare treatments and daily skincare products, this Canadian label offers up formulas that go skin-deep to target skincare concerns — so you get the best results. And the proof is in its latest launches. While the Clear Fight Oil-free Moisturizer is a remedy for acne-prone skin that unclogs pores while leaving skin hydrated, the Peptide Quench Hydrating Moisturizer harnesses the power of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and aloe to combat super dry skin. What’s more, another addition to the Clear Fight line comes by way of a daily foaming cleanser that removes pore-clogging debris and makeup dubbed the Clear Fight Clarifying Facial Cleanser. Talk about spoiled for choice!

Where do we go when we need a little beauty advice or inspiration these days? TikTok, of course! And when it comes to helpful beauty hacks, the app always delivers. Last month we unpacked curling lashes upside down (kind of) and using sunscreen to contour, but this time around we’re getting into hacking a blowout overnight, DIYing your own skincare tools and more.

Below, find five tips and tricks that have been approved by #beautytok to try out this month.

Hold your bangs in place with a little lash glue

@darekelly

i kept forgetting and accidentally tugging at it but perfect hack for windy sf weather #bangs #lashgluebangs #bangshack #hairhack

♬ girls like me don’t cry (sped up) – thuy

Bangs are all fun and games until the wind blows. With a single gust, your carefully cropped bangs are giving full access to your bare forehead. Maybe you should try gluing your fringe down. Hear us out. In a viral video posted by @darekelly, she makes a convincing case for this hack. All you’ll need is lash glue, which you likely already have stored in your makeup bag. Again, that’s lash glue! Any other types of glue can irritate your skin should be avoided. Begin by using a few dots of glue along the brow bone (or wherever your bangs end) and press your strands into place. This ensures everything is evenly fanned out across your forehead. And just like that, your bangs are wind-proof! But don’t just take our word for it, users in the comment section of this tutorial speculate that this trick is how K-Pop star Lisa of Blackpink keeps her signature blunt fringe intact on stage, through killer choreography and all.

Combat oily skin with a foundation and powder concoction

@vincent.ford

This powder hack works well to control oil if you have oily skin I used Laura Mercier Translucent Powder in Honey and Fenty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Foundation #oilyskin #makeuphack #matteskin #fyp

♬ original sound – Vincent Ford

Got oily skin? London-based makeup artist Vincent Ford posted this powder trick that’ll help combat an oily-looking base in just a few foolproof steps. Just mix a loose face powder of your choice with your favourite liquid foundation and blend with your hands before applying it to your face with your fingertips. The result? A more mattified face with a blurred finish that’ll help to control oil all day long.

DIY a facial roller with a deodorant bottle…?

We love us a good skincare tool, but we don’t always love the price tag. That said, allow us to introduce our next hack: a DIY facial roller made with something you probably already keep in your medicine cabinet. In a TikTok with a whopping 35 million views, @rose.friederike uses an empty rollerball deodorant to DIY a facial roller. First, she pries the ball out with a small pair of nail scissors and soaks both the bottle and the ball in soapy water to clean it out (we suggest doing a super thorough cleanse to ensure no harsh ingredients have been left behind). Next, she grabs her product of choice — which is aloe vera — and squeezes it into the bottle before popping the ball back in. To complete her creation, she adds a personalized “face mask & chill” sticker to the bottle for a fun touch.

Hack a curly blowout overnight

@itsamandaguido

Tutorial of how I achieved heatless overnight curls on my smoothed-out, curly hair using flexing rods and socks & poor joe has seen some crazy things when I go to bed lol he said: “at-least tell me the socks were clean” LOL #heatlesscurls

♬ Area Codes (Sped Up Version) – Kali & sped up nightcore

Hair that sets in your sleep? Yes, please! If you’ve still got a set of flexi-rod rollers knocking around from way back when, you may want to bring them back into your hair tool rotation for this heatless curl hack. A recent TikTok posted by Canadian curly girl Amanda Guido walks us through how to use flexi-rods to achieve voluminous, blown-out looking curls overnight. Starting off with smoothed-out hair, apply oil to the ends of your strands before you wrap them up for the night. Next, stuff a handful of flexirods into a clean sock to act as your first ‘curler’. Make a C-shaped part at the top of your head and roll your sock tool from the ends of your hair up until you meet the scalp. Then, lock your sock curler in place by bending the flexi-rod. Repeat these steps all around your head in medium-sized sections — and be sure to tuck your hair up into a satin bonnet before bed so you can sleep sweetly and dream about the gorgeous curls you’re about to wake up to.

Match your foundation perfectly every time with this trick

@nikkiajoy

How to match your foundation the RIGHT way!!👏🏼 I hope this makeup tip helps🥺 #makeup #beauty #makeupartist #makeuptips #foundationhack #foundationmatch

♬ Funny Song – Cavendish Music

Whether we’re adapting to a darker skin tone in the summer, a lighter shade in the winter, or simply trying to decide which undertone is the right one, it can be a struggle to find the perfect shade of foundation. You may have tried swatching on the back of your hand or directly on your face in-store, only to return home and discover it’s not a match. Turns out we may have been doing it wrong all along. Beauty guru Nikkia Joy took to TikTok to teach us how to find our best match. “What you want to do instead is match your foundation to the exposed skin on your neck and chest,” says Joy. Start with one swatch on the neck, and blend it out to see if it matches. Though it may not be the same shade as your face, the point is to ensure that your makeup seamlessly blends into your neck and chest so it looks most natural. One more pro tip from Joy? Let your swatch dry down to see its true colour before you make your decision, as some foundations have a tendency to oxidize.

“I’ve always loved a red carpet moment,” says Elle Fanning over a video call from Cannes. “Since I was little!” The 25-year-old actress, producer and L’Oréal Paris spokesperson has indeed been a fixture in Hollywood since she was a toddler. She kicked off her already two-decades-long acting career by playing the younger version of her sister Dakota’s characters in the miniseries Taken and the film I Am Sam, and at age four landed her first independent role, in the comedy film Daddy Day Care. So she knows a thing or two about a red carpet.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Elle Fanning (@ellefanning)

Today, she’s calling in from her fifth Cannes Film Festival, where she opened the annual two-week-long event in a stunning Alexander McQueen design by Sarah Burton. “It was kind of the ultimate Elle dress,” she says of the romantic custom look, which is inspired by a deconstructed orchid. “I went to my first Alexander McQueen show in March and I saw the bodice of this dress on the runway.” It was love at first sight. “Seeing it in person, I was like, ‘This is the best dress I’ve ever seen!’,” she laughs. “It was like wearing art. It was so me and Cannes is the only place to wear a dress like this. It’s such a big carpet, it needs a big dress. And sparkles never hurt.”

A culmination of Fanning’s signature romantic, ethereal style, which we’ve watched evolve and grow alongside the young actress for over two decades, the McQueen dress by Sarah Burton is indeed so very her—mature yet still whimsical and playful. “You never want to take fashion too seriously,” says Fanning. “Then it starts not being fun.” Fanning says that fashion has long been a happy, welcoming place for her, giving her space to play and experiment. “The fashion community has always been a place that’s accepted me,” she says. “When I was in high school, a bold fashion sense wasn’t as celebrated. I’d wear my wacky Rodarte pants or my vintage finds to school and they just weren’t accepted in the era of skinny jeans and t-shirts. I always felt at home in the fashion industry, because I could experiment and try new things.” Fanning credits style giants like Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs for taking her under their wing and helping to shape her ability to put a look together.

Photography by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

The actress brings that sense of play to her beauty looks, too, of course. “I’m in my eye makeup era,” says Fanning. “I’m getting creative and experimenting with my eyes.” I ask if this is a post-Euphoria effect. “Oh yeah, maybe! The rhinestones!” While Fanning uses makeup as a creative outlet, she also views getting un-ready at the end of a day as a moment of self-care. “It’s important to take time for yourself to decompress at the end of the night with your skincare. For me, hair wash day is a big deal because I have very curly hair [Editor’s note: say what?!], which people actually don’t know because I straighten it a lot,” she laughs. “But detangling it is a whole process. And I think loving yourself and being able to take time to look in the mirror and breathe is very important.”

As a young woman in Hollywood who’s been in the industry since she was really young, Fanning says she’s proud to work with L’Oréal Paris, who launched the Lights on Women initiative in 2021, a yearly award program for promising female short filmmakers. The winner of each year’s award will collect a grant, and receive support from the brand throughout the year at other festivals. “It’s so important to uplift young female artists and create space for them,” says Fanning, who has a production company with her sister, Dakota, called Lewellen Pictures. “I’ve been fortunate to have worked with a lot of female directors from a very young age,” she says. “So I will always continue to look for new female directors to work with.”

Photography via L’Oreal Paris

The same goes for the writers of the films and shows she works on. “As a woman, I want to feel like all of my complexities and layers are on screen,” says Fanning. “I think sometimes male writers will write a part where a woman walks into a room and she’s just strong and badass. And of course, there’s a time and place for that. But I’m like, ‘Where are her weaknesses? Where is she faltering and finding her strength?'”

Fanning is outspoken about the importance of increased diversity and representation in every facet of the industry, As one of the faces of L’Oréal Paris’ True Match Foundation, which is available in 45 shades and was recently reformulated with up to six pigments, allowing for its most precise shade-matching ever, the brand’s commitment to providing a wide range of makeup shades (and at accessible price points) is certainly not lost on Fanning. “It’s always so inspiring to be on set for True Match commercials and be with all of the girls,” she says. The most recent commercial stars Fanning alongside H.E.R, Kate Winslet and Nyma Tang. “It’s incredibly important that people feel like they are seen. The worst thing in the world is to feel like you’re not being listened to and not being seen. I’m happy that we can provide a little bit of that through beauty. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful.”

If you were offered the opportunity to relive an elementary school class, would you take it? What if that class was taught by Angelina Jole? The actress, filmmaker and humanitarian taught a Guerlain Bee School session at Ecole Henri Barbusse, an elementary school in Clichy-sous-Bois (a suburb of Paris) earlier this year, as part of the brand’s ongoing mission to teach children about bees and how they positively affect our environment.

In fact, since launching the Bee School program in 2018, Guerlain has kept its promise that every employee of the brand teaches a Bee School session to elementary school-aged kids between the ages of 5 and 11. The program started in France but went global in 2021. Since then, almost 6000 children in over ten countries have been able to learn about the various issues facing bees and biodiversity conservation. Capturing and holding the attention of a room full of kids is no easy feat, but thanks to the initiative’s interactive and fascinating curriculum, including Q+A sessions, workshops, and games, it’s definitely doable. And we got the opportunity to experience the class first-hand.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.F. GALIPEAU

Earlier this month, in preparation for World Bee Day on May 20th, we attended a ‘Beescapade’ hosted by Guerlain at Quebec organic honey farm, Miels d’Anicet, following a signature facial at the Guerlain spa at Four Seasons Hotel Montreal. Making it even more special, Guerlain’s Chief Sustainability Officer Cécile Lochard (who co-hosted the Clichy-sous-Bois class alongside Angelina Jolie back in January) was in town from France for the event. “I’m not a beekeeper but I think I could be now,” laughs Lochard. We got to learn all things bees, sustainability and Guerlain straight from the ultimate expert.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.F. GALIPEAU

Additionally, from May 20th to May 22nd, 20% of the brand’s sales will be donated to the Guerlain for Bees Conservation Programme. Continue reading for some of the most interesting and un-bee-lievable facts we learned at Guerlain Bee School.

The Guerlain emblem has been a bee for 170 years

Guerlain was founded almost 200 years ago, with a bee as its emblem for 170 of those years. This started when founder Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain was tasked with creating a fragrance for Empress Eugénie’s marriage to Napoleon III in 1853. To do so, he collaborated with master glassmaker Pochet du Courval, who designed a stylish bottle adorned with bees—a long-standing emblem of the French empire. The end result was so beloved that the bee has remained at the heart of the brand ever since. “We’re extremely committed to celebrating the bee,” says Lochard. “Each May 20th, we celebrate everything the brand does to partner with scientific organizations toward the preservation of bees.”

The Queen Bee only eats royal jelly

A beehive’s Queen Bee is much larger than her crew because she lives off of a luxe diet of royal jelly (sometimes called ‘bee milk’), not honey and pollen like her worker bees. This helps her outlive the other honey bees, and makes her capable of laying more than 2000 eggs per day. Go off, queen.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.F. GALIPEAU

There are 20,000 different species of bees around the world

“Bees belong to a family of insects called hymenoptera,” explains Lochard. This family has certain characteristics: three pairs of legs, two pairs of wings, and a three-part body. There are 20,000 species of bees around the world, but only two types: domestic and wild. Domestic bees live in colonies and produce honey, but they only make up 10% of the bee population. 90% of bees are wild bees, which are solitary insects. They don’t produce honey or have stingers.

Bees bring the heat—literally

Even in the coldest temperatures (like, winter-in-Quebec levels of cold), the inside of a beehive can remain at a temperature of four degrees Celsius. This is due to the muscular contractions of the bees, who are busy working away.

But the main takeaway from Guerlain’s Bee School? “Many people don’t even know that bees are endangered,” says Lochard. “We protect what we love, but we only love what we know. That’s why we developed Bee School in 2018, to pass down our love for bees to children.”

With the arrival of Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, we’ve been once again swept up into a Bridgerton fantasyone in which the tale of Queen Charlotte’s ascension to the throne is accompanied by all the enchanting elements of pomp, pageantry, and risqué romance that we love about the original series. Only this time, the Queen and her natural hair help to propel the story in a way we hadn’t yet experienced in a period drama before.

This prequel winds back the clock and introduces us to a young Queen Charlotte (portrayed by India Amarteifio) and King George III (played by Corey Mylchreest), as the origin of their romance unfolds in six binge-worthy episodes. If you’ve seen any of the Bridgerton episodes, then you’re already acquainted with the gossip-loving Queen Charlotte and her sky-high wigs intricately interwoven with diamonds, pearls, and of course, crowns. Though when we first meet young Charlotte in episode one of the new series, she is not yet a Queen.

A post shared by Bridgerton (@bridgertonnetflix)

Set to marry the King, she arrives in England in the first episode with her natural curls pulled up into an updo, still visible beneath a blue satin headpiece. This textured updo remains for the majority of the episode — that is until her first run-in with her future husband George — who she is actively trying to escape at the time of their meeting — moments ahead of their wedding. Following a surprisingly warm first encounter in which the King leaves the decision to wed entirely in Charlotte’s hands (after having seen her attempt to climb a literal *wall* to escape her marital duty), the soon-to-be Queen is left with a newfound sense of agency. In one of her first power moves of the show, she abandons her former updo and arrives at the wedding ceremony with a perfectly picked out afro and defined curls around the perimeter of her face topped with a flower ornamented tiara. With that, she weds the King on her own terms — natural hair on full display.

The first season of Bridgerton, where Queen Charlotte rules over the ton at a much older age, is set in 1813 London. So we can surmise that Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story takes place during the latter half of the 1700s. Typically, when we think of other period piece dramas set around the same English Regency era, we envision women like Keira Knightley in Pride and Prejudice with elegant coiffures and Marie Antoinette-esque bouffants accompanied by forced curls. Bridgerton is known for its diversity and inclusion, and this limited series is no exception. Much like many of the characters of colour in the Bridgerverse, Queen Charlotte and her naturally textured tresses are a welcome anomaly in this genre. The decision to embrace her curls is not only a major statement about Black women and their hair in film, but it also helps us to understand the type of character Queen Charlotte will become. “We wanted to show the afro and its beauty,” says hair and makeup head of the new series Nic Collins in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “That was important. It’s her decision, it’s her choice. It’s like she’s just let her hair down and it sits in its glory.”

Despite Amarteifio (who has blown us away with her recent press tour hairstyles) having a full head of beautifully defined coils, it may surprise you to learn that every single hairstyle Queen Charlotte wears is a wig. Why then, would a show with such an adamant focus on embracing natural hair, not embrace its leading lady’s natural curls? As a curly girl myself, I take this as a sign of a hair team that is well-versed in the workings of textured hair — one that understands our hair is delicate and more prone to breakage. They are aware of the fact that our curls may not necessarily be able to withstand rigorous daily styling in the ways other hair types can. “If it’s not their natural hair, all characters are wearing wigs because we wanted to be cautious and not damage the lead’s natural hair,” Collins tells the Los Angeles Times. The use of wigs runs deeper than mere on-screen representation — is a careful consideration of the actors’ hair in real life, which is just as crucial.

As the show rolls on, we’re offered up a spectacular array of elaborate hairstyles that evolve as Queen Charlotte does. We observe her hair wrapped up before bed (as we natural-haired folks do), in ornate updos, and worn in an abundance of afros adorned with jewels and crowns that capture the regal essence of the show. Collins tells Netflix that the hair stylists used a collection of unorthodox tools like thin skewers and wire cages within the wigs to help create shape and convey various textures — because some of us can only dream of achieving hair that big and bodacious.

In the final episode, young Charlotte’s ‘fro is fuller than ever, and she is ready to reign as the mature monarch we all know her to be. Closing out the series having embraced all her kinks and coils, Queen Charlotte reminds us all that wearing a head full of curls is a crown in and of itself.

In his latest leading man role, Timothée Chalamet has been announced as the new face of the Bleu de Chanel fragrance for men — a partnership that’s a stylish fit for both the Oscar-nominated actor and the classic Parisian brand.

RELATED: Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet Just Destroyed Yet Another Red Carpet

Though he’s been known for sporting high-fashion looks for years now, this collaboration is Chalamet’s first partnership with a fashion house. Chanel picked the Dune star, who they call “one of the most alluring and audacious actors of his generation,” to be the face of the men’s fragrance partially due to his edgy persona and often daring style choices, according to an official release from the brand.

Not one to shy away from bold colours, unique silhouettes and unexpected textures, Chalamet has made a name for himself for his creative and gender-fluid red carpet style, frequently working with designers like Louis Vuitton and Haider Ackermann. Back in September of 2022 at the Venice Film Festival, the actor made headlines as onlookers were blown away by his show-stopping backless red jumpsuit, which was designed by the aforementioned Ackermann. You know what goes great with a fashion-forward gender-bending jumpsuit? A woody aromatic scent.

Without even trying, his off-duty style is just as cool. The star is often seen sporting his favourite Prada jacket and loves to layer with streetwear staples like windbreakers and sweaters (like the iconic Glossier hoodie Timmy wore back in 2019, and no, he wasn’t an ambassador, just a fan) when he’s out and about. Fans are so enamoured with his street style that there’s even an Instagram account called @readytimmywear, which has over 30K followers, that chronicles Chalamet’s looks both on and off the red carpet.

Chalamet’s meteoric rise to fame after starring in the 2017 coming-of-age film, Call Me By Your Name, has been nothing short of neck-breaking. Since his big break, Chalamet has starred in movies such as Lady Bird, Little Women and Beautiful Boy. Fans of the 27-year-old actor are also waiting on his next projects to hit the big screen, which includes the titular role in Wonka, the prequel to the 1964 Ronald Dahl novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the next instalment of the Dune series, Dune: Part Two. And how could die-hard Chalamet fans forget last year’s cannibal love story Bones and All, co-starring Canadian (and fellow fashion darling) Taylor Russell?

In a conversation with Chanel about his new beauty gig, Chalamet discussed how working with the brand felt like a “no-brainer” and explained, “As someone who is passionate about movie making and acting,” the significance of “collaborating with a fashion and beauty house that has a vast, substantive history with cinema.” That history continues with this campaign — a campaign film, directed by Martin Scorsese, be be released this coming fall.

Photography courtesy of Chanel

So, is Chalamet an everyday scent kind of guy, or someone who uses fragrance for special moments? It would seem it’s the latter, with the actor taking as thoughtful an approach to grooming as he does style. “When you put on Bleu de Chanel, you’re emphasizing a distinct experience, or maybe a certain look, occasion, or date,” the actor says. “For me, personally, there’s a specific intention behind fragrance. I’m not someone who wears a scent all the time. When I do, it becomes emblematic of a moment, and later there’s a nostalgia for that moment and it becomes something more meaningful.”

The Bleu de Chanel campaign, shot by legendary fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti, will be released in June.

Expanding upon the high-tech universe of Dyson styling tools, the haircare innovator has unveiled the Dyson Airstrait — a wet-to-dry hair straightener here to revolutionize the way we blow dry and flat iron our multi-textured tresses forever.

On a balmy evening in NYC on May 11, brand founder Sir James Dyson presented his latest product innovation to an eager crowd of media, beauty enthusiasts and influencers. As a black cloth covering the mysterious machine was pulled back to reveal the brand-new hair straightener in all its sleek glory, the audience cheered and clapped with excitement, still unaware of what it was or what it even did yet. Why? Because with every groundbreaking announcement of Dyson hair tools, like the Supersonic hairdryer, the Corrale straightener, and the Airwrap multi-styler serving as evidence, the brand proves it’s constantly one-upping its own creations launch after launch. The arrival of the Airstrait — which comes as part of the brand’s £500m promise to expand its research and technology development in its beauty sphere — is no exception to that rule.

Photography Courtesy of Dyson

“Having a strong understanding of how to manipulate and realize the potential of powerful airflow is fundamental to the performance of Dyson AirstraitTM straightener,” shares Dyson in a press release. “This expertise, which we’ve gained over the last 25 years, is what has enabled us to deliver our first wet-to-dry straightened, with no hot plates, and no heat damage.” The aforementioned airflow is shot through two apertures on the arms of the machine, which are angled at 45 degrees and deliver a downward blast of air powerful enough to straighten strands while they dry.

Emma Sheldon, vice president of the hair care sector at Dyson explains that the name of this machine is derived from the word strait — meaning, a narrow passage of water that connects with larger bodies of water. “It’s a nod to the fact that you’re styling your hair from [a] wet [state],” she explains. This process is able to be successfully carried out by using optimum heat levels and directional airflow to avoid damaging the hair, which is naturally weakened when wet. To protect the hair, the Dyson Airstrait also uses Intelligent Heat Control to measure airflow temperatures up to 30 times per second in order to prevent heat damage. What’s more, this machine can be conveniently used in either a Wet, Dry or Cool mode with varying heat settings available.

Photography Courtesy of Dyson

To prove the Airstrait’s efficacy and ability to cater to all hair types, Dyson global styling ambassadors and celebrity hairstylists Matthew Collins and Irinel de Léon took to the stage to demonstrate how to use the tool on three different hair types. This inclusive capability was one that Collins considered when checking out the product near the end of its development.

“I was like, ‘is it going to work for all hair types?’ Because we all know with type three or four type hair — even within that type — there’s a lot of different textures that react differently to heat,” the Canadian hairdresser tells FASHION.

The good news: The Airstrait does work for all hair types.

On a wet section of hair, the hairstylists wowed the crowd with the tool’s ability to straighten and smooth strands from wavy locks to kinks and coils with three passes. Collins explains that although coarser type four hair textures may not necessarily achieve a silk-press level result with the Airstrait, what it will do is minimize the amount of work by eliminating tedious round-brushing and blow drying. “All the type four [haired] girls that I’ve talked to about this are like, ‘Yeah I’m spending almost an hour to prepare my hair for my flat iron, and now you’ve just made that process a half hour.’ That’s a game changer.”

A post shared by Dyson Hair (@dysonhair)

While Collins says the Airstrait won’t necessarily replace all of our beloved styling tools, he tells FASHION it’s going to change the hairstyling game “a lot.” And while it’s not technically a professional tool, Collins says, “For me as a professional… secretly I’m keeping it in my kit.” (We suspect he may use the tool to style his high-profile clients like Mandy Moore and Sophia Bush.)

With the Airstrait being just one of 20 beauty products coming down the Dyson pipeline over the next four years, we can’t begin to imagine what other state-of-the-art tools could be coming next.

The Dyson Airstrait ($699.99) is available to shop in Canada right now.

Last summer, we couldn’t seem to escape the shimmering lure of Hailey Bieber‘s glazed donut nails. And just shy of one year later, there’s a new chrome nail craze on the rise that is just as sweet. Enter vanilla chrome nails, the creamy metallic manicure making us melt.

Not to be confused with the original glazed donut look, this new iteration of last year’s trend features a more off-white, vanilla-coloured undertone — hence, the name of the look — paired with a classic chrome top coat that gives off a pearlescent finish. By combining a neutral base with a pearly element of high shine, the result is a look that reads subtle yet glamorous. Call it a cross between quiet luxury and mermaidcore, if you will.

Racking up nearly 100,000 likes on Instagram, it was nail artist Alexandra Teleki (a.k.a The Hot Blend) who posted the save-worthy snapshot of her vanilla chrome manicure back in March that has served as the main source of inspiration for the trend ever since. “This is a chrome twist, it is so subtle and beautiful!” comments one user beneath the viral post. “Omg I am obsessed,” writes a fellow nail tech. With her vanilla chrome look in high demand and over 500,000 curious followers on TikTok and Instagram to answer to, Teleki revealed her creative process on both platforms in a step-by-step tutorial right in time for spring and summer. The best part? You can recreate the look yourself at home — and it only requires a few simple steps.

As seen in her viral TikTok (which has accumulated over six million on the app so far), Teleki begins by painting each nail with a coat of The GelBottle’s Love Letter polish to create a creamy vanilla-coloured base. To lock it in, she then swipes a layer of Extreme Shine Top Coat on top of the off-white polish. As for the pearlescent pièce de résistance, each nail is then buffed with a white pearl chrome powder to create that shimmery, reflective finish. Lastly, she cleans up the look by brushing away any excess powder surrounding the nails, and reveals a fresh spring-ready vanilla chrome mani. It’s as simple as that!

Loving the look of this manicure trend? Keep scrolling for more pearly inspiration — including two new ways to further simplify your at-home chrome manis that’ll change your nail game forever.

Try a French vanilla

If you’re already into the vanilla trend, might we suggest a vanilla Française? And why not save yourself some time by going the press-on route? These French Glaze press-ons by Canadian beauty brand Quickies are gorgeous, easy to apply, and right on trend.

Go for a pink pearl mani

Strawberry chrome nails, anyone? Try opting for a layer of translucent pink polish over your cream shade before adding your chrome powder to create a soft pink pearl look that is subtle yet chic.

Get the look with a glaze pen

Using this convenient Glazing Powder Pen by Salon Perfect, all you’ll need is a single swipe of the gel polish included on one side of the pen followed by a buff of chrome powder on the other to achieve the chrome look overtop bare nails or coloured polish.

Try soft spring shades

Giving in to pastels for spring? As you should! Elevate the classic chrome look with a multicoloured pattern by swapping out the neutral base shade with any combination of your favourite springy pastels. Baby blue, candy floss pink, sweet lilac — the choice is yours.

Make it abstract

If you’re feeling experimental, follow Teleki’s lead and take the classic vanilla chrome manicure to new heights with this abstract design on a few accent nails for a little extra fun.

We don’t know about you, but we’ve been pleasantly surprised by this wave of warmth and sunshine we’ve been having in place of dreary April showers. Sure, it’s technically spring, but that fact that it also feels like spring? Groundbreaking. It also means that a slew of new sunscreen launches have arrived right on time.

We can all benefit from the protective properties that sunscreen offers, like helping to prevent sunburns, skin cancer, and premature signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. The SPF of our beloved sunscreens is an indicator of how well a sunscreen can protect against UVA and UVB rays, and we should be aiming to use products with a minimum SPF of 30.

Here’s the thing: We love sunscreen and all that it does for us, but finding one that blends well with our makeup and doesn’t leave behind a white cast or a greasy finish is no easy feat. It’s true that you should be applying sunscreen daily and all year round, but if you’ve neglected this step during the winter months or haven’t found a sunscreen that works for you, allow us to introduce 12 new SPF-packed products we think you’ll love. From multifunctional creams to dewy serums, there’s a face sunscreen here for everyone.

Are there any depictions of love more romantic, more dizzying and more over-the-top than the ones that exist in the fragrance world? Perhaps only Disney films and romcoms come in as close seconds to the perfume industry, which has long been determined to capture that “drunk in love” feeling in a bottle, sweeping us off our feet with grand declarations of love in both the descriptions of fragrance notes and in ad campaigns. The beauty industry may just be the most hopeless romantic there ever was.

RELATED: Romcom Core Is About Romanticizing Your Life

Take, for example, Missing Person, the first fragrance launch from Phlur last year. The scent sold out upon its release, thanks to viral TikToks claiming it smells like someone you love. Indeed, the description on the Phlur website reads: “If nude were a perfume, this is it. Missing Person is pure, provocative and undeniably familiar.” #PerfumeTok creator @paulreactss says in his video, “It could literally make me emotional. This is what love smells like. To me, it smells like when my partner [and I] first met.” This spring, Phlur released its best-selling scent in a candle, calling it “a delicate, yet addictive fragrance that evokes the lingering smell of your lover’s scent.”

A post shared by PHLUR (@phlur)

Luxury fragrance brand Killian Paris is perhaps most well-known for its Love, Don’t Be Shy fragrance — otherwise known as Rihanna’s favourite perfume. (In case you didn’t know, the A-lister famously smells heavenly.) Its description reads: “First love’s innocence makes itself known with juicy honeysuckle and plush rose softly caressed by the sweetness of luscious marshmallow sugar accord, satisfying the craving pang of new love.” Earlier this year, the brand released Can’t Stop Loving You, described as “a true love declaration, a perfume celebrating love. Can’t Stop Loving You is a narcotic floral fragrance that puts peace in danger.” Oof. Be still, my heart. The list goes on and on: What Would Love Do? by Lush (a personal favourite, which has sadly been discontinued in North America), Chloé’s Love Story, Tory Burch Love Relentlessly, Dior J’Adore.

So what’s with perfumery’s obsession with love? Well, it actually comes down to science. Smells are processed by the brain’s olfactory bulb, which is directly connected to the parts of our brain that process memory and emotion. It’s why a sniff of a certain fragrance can immediately send you on a sudden trip down memory lane (whether you consider yourself a hopeless romantic or not). It’s also why love and scents can’t be separated — they’re chemically intertwined.

But it’s not just fragrances. The makeup industry is head-over-heels in love (and lust), too. Think of iconic products like Nars’ Orgasm and Too Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara. More recently, Rituel de Fille’s Love Spell (fun fact: this is the exact product used on Riley Keough’s eyelids in Daisy Jones & The Six), Pat McGrath’s Love at First Blush and Love and Lust Duo of glosses, and Charlotte Tilbury’s Look of Love collection, prove that the beauty industry’s obsession with looking, feeling and smelling in love is no short-term fling.

Earlier this year, Byredo launched its first-ever makeup collection, under the creative direction of the brand’s newly appointed creative image and makeup Pprtner, renowned makeup artist Lucia Pica. The collection is called First Emotions, and is inspired by “that first being in love state,” explains Pica on the brand’s site. “It’s enigmatic […], a reflection of how the body feels things before they are comprehended in the brain. There are the different tonalities of love; the different facets — erotic, sincere, unconditional, even unrequited.” Featuring a limited-edition eyeshadow palette, kajal pencil, mascara and two lipsticks, which are available at Holt Renfrew, the collection is said to reflect “the many shades of falling, and being, in love. The highs and lows, bright spots and dark moments, and all of the flurry of emotions that come with falling in love.”

Above all else, First Emotions is a makeup collection for the hopeless romantic. “You kiss and everything becomes a bit more colourful,” Pica told CR Fashion Book about the collection launch.

Swoon.

Fresh off a total rebrand, Radford Beauty has entered a new era of stripped-down skincare. The Canadian brand aims to simplify skincare by cutting through the confusion. With often overcomplicated language and a constant shift in trends, it can be tricky to narrow down what your skin really needs — and what actually works. To remedy this overstimulation, skincare expert and brand founder Victoria Radford has relaunched Radford Beauty with a curated lineup of daily essentials made with clean, intentional and effective formulas. To help reset your skin and get your routine back on track, the new product portfolio now includes a skin-loving series of products ranging from a pH-balanced cleanser to a sheer tinted moisturizer, all housed in no-fuss, minimalist packaging so you can get the job done.

Sulwhasoo drops a brightening line

Photography Courtesy of Sulwhasoo

Need a little boost of brightness? The launch of Sulwhasoo’s Concentrated Ginseng Brightening line has arrived right on time. The collection, which includes a spot ampoule and a serum, boasts three illuminating hero ingredients. First, Sulwhasoo’s GinsenomicsTM technology uses a rare form of saponin (derived from the ginseng plant) within its Ginsenoside ingredient to power its anti-aging properties. Then, the patented MelasolvTM ingredient works to brighten the skin by targeting dark spots, ultimately revealing a clearer complexion that glows. And lastly, while white ginseng polysaccharides promote a radiant glow, they simultaneously keep the skin hydrated. How’s that for a brightness boost?

Supergoop!’s body sunscreen is now available in Canada

Photography Courtesy of Supergoop!

Canada, our wait is over — the Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen Body SPF 40 is here. Beauty enthusiasts are probably already obsessed with the O.G. Supergoop! facial sunscreen, but this body-focused iteration features a revamped formula and a couple of unique new ingredients you’re going to want to hear about. The Unseen Sunscreen Body offers up an easy-to-glide formula that is silkier than its facial counterpart, so it’s a breeze to apply all over the body. Plus, newly added olive leaf and fruit extracts team up with plant-derived emollients to reinforce the skin’s natural barrier and wrap the skin in a moisturizing layer of protection — without leaving behind a dreaded greasy finish.

Wildcraft launches an affordable brightening serum

On the skincare market, vitamin C serums can run you anywhere around $100 and upwards — but Wildcraft’s mission to design products priced under $45 makes their Brighten Vitamin C Face Serum a budget-friendly option that your skin will thank you for. To brighten and even out your skin tone, the serum is formulated with sodium ascorbyl phosphate (a stable, water-soluble vitamin C derivative), and uses both hyaluronic acid and sea algae to smooth the skin while fading stubborn dark spots. This Indigenous beauty brand also prides itself on creating plant-powered skincare — which is why this serum draws upon chamomile, green tea, and blossom honey ingredients to support a healthy skin barrier.

Paco Rabanne revamps its Fame fragrance for spring

Paco Rabanne’s irresistible Fame fragrance just got a springtime makeover. It’s the same floral fragrance you know and love with key notes of succulent mango and airy jasmine, only this time dressed up in a collector edition bottle doused in pink glitter. Dubbed Fame Blooming Pink, this limited-edition jewel bottle oozes luxury with its Paco Rabanne chainmail dress-inspired design in a new rosy hue. An absolute must-have for perfume collectors, it’ll add a playful pop of pink to any vanity.

If there’s one thing we can say about Florence Pugh, it’s that she’s fearless. Whether she’s playing the role of a polished 1950s housewife in the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling or the flower-crown-wearing lead in Midsommar, Pugh is unafraid to take on any character. And both on- and off-screen, she’s unafraid of trying new things with her hair.

RELATED: Florence Pugh Walked Her First Met Gala Red Carpet

In the trailer for her latest heartfelt film A Good Person, we see Pugh’s character, Allison, recklessly chopping away at her hair — which would typically be a wig, but the actress revealed in an interview with USA Today that it was actually her own hair being trimmed. “Everyone was really anxious that it was the only take we’d have, but I found it really liberating,” she shared.

This liberating haircut launched the stunning series of chic pixie cut and bob styles she’s worn since.

At the 95th Academy Awards earlier this month, Pugh’s hair — styled by her hairstylist of years, Peter Lux — was swept back into a sculptural ponytail that flowed up and forward to create micro-bangs using the ends of Pugh’s own hair, and then completed with a coquette-style black bow. It was everything we love about a classic Pugh ‘do: unexpected, intricate and innovative.

Even when Pugh isn’t donning an updo, Lux still styles and shapes every strand with purpose and intention. Rest assured this duo will always deliver hairstyles with an element of surprise. Below, browse our favourite recent Florence Pugh hair moments.

At the 2022 British Fashion Awards back in December, Pugh wore her blonde bob slicked back to perfection, with a subtle side part and flipped out ends. With a touch of the wet-look going on, Pugh’s vibe that evening was cool and effortless.

A post shared by Florence Pugh (@florencepugh)

Pugh’s 2023 Emmy Awards hairstyle wasn’t merely a hairstyle — it was a masterpiece. In the front, we see micro bangs and a glimpse of what’s in the back: an abstract work involving twisting, tucking, and fanning, resulting in a gravity-defying ‘do.

At this month’s Valentino Fall 2023 show in Paris, Pugh’s modern mohawk stole the show. “Like…mohawk, pixie, swirly thingy, punk, greasy,” says Pugh of the look on Instagram.

From complex creations to effortless updos, there’s nothing that Pugh can’t pull off. See the loose swept-up look she wore for the British Academy of Film and Television screening of A Good Person in early March. Perfectly undone yet still glamorous.

While it’s clear that Pugh is partial to an updo, she can also serve with her hair down. Take this ‘do for instance, featuring a middle part and loose waves for a day of press.

For another screening of A Good Person, Pugh was once again on the coquette beauty train — this time with an OTT sparkling bow holding her side part in place. As for the rest of the style, Lux created subtle Hollywood waves and opted for a Pugh signature: a minor flip on the ends of her blonde bob.

The Met Gala proves time and time again to be a platform for dramatic transformations and shocking reveals (think: Lady Gaga’s campy costume changes in 2019, or Jessica Chastain‘s platinum blonde unveiling at this year’s Met ball). Pugh was no exception to this rule at the 2023 “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”-themed event on May 1. Stepping out onto the Met Gala red carpet on May 1, Pugh debuted a fresh brunette buzz cut topped with a show-stopping feathered headpiece.

As we continue to keep an eye on Pugh and her sculptural hairdos (or lack thereof), we wonder what style she’ll dare to wear next.

While Met Gala themes can most easily be translated and identified through dress, beauty serves as another avenue for further creative expression. With some blatantly obvious tributes and some more subtle, the hair and makeup looks worn by this year’s Met Gala attendees reflected the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” theme beautifully.

RELATED: Who Was Missing From the Met Gala?

Having left behind a legacy that’s both controversial and celebrated, there were endless possible references to be made at an event centred around the memory of Karl Lagerfeld’s impressive career. Though this designer was best known for fashion, his creative process was also closely intertwined with beauty, giving way to some of the “Karl-isms” we spotted on the glam scene at this year’s Met Gala.

From smokey eyes to bridal beauty and, of course, nods to Lagerfeld’s beloved cat Choupette, we break down how the 2023 Met Gala beauty trends that honoured the late Karl Lagerfeld and nailed the theme.

The significance of the smokey eye

A post shared by Emily Ratajkowski (@emrata)

When Met Gala attendees including Emily Ratajkowski, Keke Palmer, Kim Kardashian, and longtime Lagerfeld muse Cara Delevingne stepped out onto the Met carpet with slept-in smokey eyeshadow, we began to sense a trend. While this sultry eye look is a certified classic, it has deeper ties with Lagerfeld and his relationship to makeup. As a multi-hyphenate dabbling in photography, illustration and design, Lagerfeld’s artistic abilities stretched far beyond strictly clothing. Among various other mediums used to communicate texture in his drawings, Lagerfeld is known to have used eyeshadow.

In addition to using shadows for the sketches themselves, he always had a vision of how each model’s makeup would tie into his designs. “Karl was building a story with every collection, and there was no [disconnect’ between the makeup and the clothes,” shared Caroline Lebar, SVP of image and communications at Karl Lagerfeld, in a Vogue interview. “He had a vision of how she dressed. How she did her makeup. How she did her hair.” With this attention to detail, the creation of several makeup collections developed with big beauty players like Sephora and L’Oréal seemed to be a fitting extension of Lagerfeld’s creativity. Eyeshadow palettes packed with midnight blacks, sultry silvers and blendable browns proved to be the common thread throughout his makeup collections, mirroring Lagerfeld’s iconic monochrome look and the signature Chanel smokey eye — a recurring look that appeared on the runways of some of Lagerfeld’s most praised shows from the ’90s to the end of his career.

Fanciful felines

A post shared by Saccia (@sacciadidthat)

From Doja Cat’s sharpened claws and prosthetic snout to more subtle feline eyeliner flicks worn by stars like J.Lo and Vanessa Hudgens, one could argue that this year’s Met Gala beauty looks honoured Karl Lagerfeld’s blue-eyed Birman cat as much as the late designer himself. She’s a cover girl. She’s an Instagram icon. She’s essentially the heir to the Lagerfeld throne (and is reportedly set to inherit some of his millions). She is Choupette! As Lagerfeld’s feline companion and perhaps most prized possession, homages to Choupette and cat-inspired beauty looks were to be expected at this year’s Met Gala — and they did not disappoint.

After cat-sitting Choupette (whose name translates to “cute girl” in French) for French model and muse Baptiste Giabiconi in 2011, Lagerfeld was so fond of the cat and their time together that he decided to keep her. “There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals… I never thought I would fall in love like this with a cat,” he told CNN in 2013. In the years since, this fluffy feline has become as synonymous with Lagerfeld as his signature white ponytail and black sunglasses. When Choupette revealed on Instagram that she would not be walking the Met carpet — despite her eagerly anticipated attendance — we had to rely on celebrities and the power of makeup to channel her feline energy. And they sure did.

Pearls, pearls, pearls!

A post shared by Taylour Chanel (@taylourchanel)

Channeling Lagerfeld’s Chanel era, we observed pearls galore draped over gowns and hanging from the necks of Met Gala guests — and upon close inspection, pearl details were also worked into some of the best beauty looks of the night. Alton Mason (who was the first Black male model to walk in a Chanel show) accessorized his look with a single pearl at the inner corner of each eye, Gigi Hadid opted for an undereye placement of her micro pearls, and Lil Nas X was bedecked in pearls from head to toe, all nodding to the house of Chanel where pearls remain one of the brand’s most notable symbols. Coco Chanel famously stated that “A woman should have ropes and ropes of pearls,” a mantra which Lagerfeld continued to follow when he began working at the French fashion house in the 1980s. Layered pearls were featured in Lagerfeld’s debut collection at Chanel in 1983, and this precious gemstone continued to appear throughout his collections until his final show in 2019.

The black bow

We may view hair bows as a coquettet beauty accessory now, but the black bow will forever be associated with Chanel. Like pearls, the bow was an accessory favoured by Coco Chanel that Lagerfeld continued to incorporate into his looks long after her death and right up until his own. Under Lagerfeld’s rule, the black bow was used on Chanel runways in a multitude of imaginative ways: classically tying a model’s hair back in the Fall 1986 show, as a headband during the Spring 1990 show, miniature and everywhere at the Autumn 2005 show, and as a bridal accessory on muse Cara Delevingne for the Métiers d’Art show in 2014. On the Met Gala red carpet, our FASHION’s Winter 2022 cover star Sydney Sweeney went big and bold with her black bow, while Karlie Kloss, Camilla Morrone and Billie Eilish also took on the black bow trend.

Bridal beauty

In true couture tradition, Lagerfeld was known to close his haute couture shows with a bridal look, many of which became his most beloved and best-known creations. From ’90s brides Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista and Devon Aoki to modern muse brides like Lily-Rose Depp and Kendall Jenner, Lagerfeld’s nuptial looks pushed the envelope with designs that surpassed traditional notions of wedding attire. In his honour, bridal beauty was abundant on the stairs of The Met. Met Gala co-chair Penélope Cruz accessorized her hair with a dreamy bridal veil (which was part of a hooded gown plucked from the archives of Chanel’s 1998 Spring collection), Ava Max adorned a pearl-encrusted headpiece to complete her bridal look, and Alton Mason topped off his “groom” getup with a rhinestone encrusted veil overtop his cornrows.

We all want skincare products that deliver the results we’re after and leave us looking and feeling our best. We want to see a decreased appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increased radiance, and an overall smoother, more even complexion. We also want to know what the ingredients we’re putting on our skin are, and really understand how they work. Oh and better yet, we’d like to achieve those results using local, good-for-you Canadian ingredients. Is that too much to ask?

The newly reformulated Watier Age Control Supreme Sublime Advanced product range, including a day cream and light day cream, checks every single one of those boxes. Now formulated with superstar local Canadian ingredients and featuring more protection via antioxidants, you’ll see the anti-aging, brightening results you’re after in less time than ever. Their recent clinical study resulted in a significant anti-wrinkle and smoothing effect after only 14-28 days.

This range was re-formulated with Canadian women in mind. Our harsh Canadian climate, along with other daily stressors, impact our skin more than we realize. This is why their formulators decided to add extra levels of protection and antioxidants in these new and improved products.

“The global anti-aging benefit is still present (wrinkles, prevention, uniformity and radiance of the complexion, hydration, plumping effect). However, we wanted to make the antioxidant protection shield even more powerful and complete,” they said. “We also wanted to promote local Canadian key ingredients. Using our distinctive Canadian ingredients goes one step further than simply claiming to be a local brand.”

Whether you’re looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift for Mom, or shopping for yourself so you can feel strong and confident in your skin, Watier’s newly reformulated Age Control Supreme Sublime Advanced line has what you need. Continue reading for the ultimate decoder about the hero ingredients in this collection and how they can help you achieve stronger and healthier skin.

@fashionmagazineHave you heard the news? Watier has reformulated its coveted Age Control Supreme Sublime Advanced products. They’re now made with superstar local Canadian ingredients and feature more protection via antioxidants, so you’ll see the anti-aging and brightening results you’re after in only 14 days. Take a close-up look at their new and improved products, and hop onto our website for more deets on their new formula! 🧖🏼‍♀️✨♬ original sound – FASHION

Labrador Tea +

Extracted from the Labrador Tea plant, the hero ingredient in Watier’s Age Control Supreme Sublime Advanced product range is known for its age-defying properties and incredible ability to keep skin looking youthful and healthy. The recently reformulated products now feature Labrador Tea in encapsulated form, so the ingredient can better penetrate and diffuse into the skin. It also ensures its potency is preserved. A powerful antioxidant, Labrador Tea + helps the skin maintain its elasticity and firmness, helping it effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Thanks to this new encapsulated formula, when you apply their day cream (also available in a light formula), the concentration of Labrador Tea + can better penetrate, allowing for even better and faster results.

Cranberry Biopeptides

Peptides derived from cranberries are featured in all two formulations of their Age Control Supreme Sublime Advanced line. From soothing and moisturizing skin to revitalizing dullness, cranberry biopeptides can really do it all. In fact, they also have serious anti-aging properties, working faster than retinol (yes, really) to address issues like wrinkles and dullness without any irritation. They don’t call cranberries superfruits for nothing.

Boreal Chaga Mushroom

It’s no secret that a strong skin barrier is crucial for healthy skin, which is why Boreal Chaga mushroom is a key component of Watier’s Age Control Supreme Sublime Advanced line. The extract is rich in polyphenols, which help rejuvenate skin. Boreal Chaga mushroom, which is a more potent antioxidant than vitamin C, strengthens the barrier function of the outermost layer of skin. Better yet, the Boreal Chaga mushroom used in Watier’s formulations is responsibly and sustainably harvested in Canadian forests.

Boreal White Pine

Thanks to Boreal White Pine’s unique antioxidant composition, it targets three major areas of skin issues: pigmentation, inflammation and translucency. When you use Boreal white pine, you will see a reduction in the appearance of dark spots, discolouration and uneven skin tone. It also brightens the complexion and leaves you with luminous, glowing skin.

Talk about a Met Gala to remember. From Rita Ora’s foot-long nail chains (the coolest, albeit most impractical, nail trend ever?) to Naomi Campbell giving signature Naomi at her 16th (!!!) Met Gala, to Emma Chamberlain’s blue smoky eye and extra-long extensions, the Met Gala 2023 beauty looks did not disappoint. This year’s gala, honouring the late Karl Lagerfeld, gave us equal parts classic and understated (think Irina Shayk, Kate Moss and Gisele Bündchen each donning the hair and makeup looks we know and love them for) and bold and experimental (courtesy of Doja Cat and Lil Nas X, most notably).

RELATED: Chanel Brides and Chic Cats Dominate the 2023 Met Gala Red Carpet

Below, we walk you through our favourite Met Gala 2023 beauty looks and the inspo behind them.

Rita Ora’s foot-long pearl and diamond nail chains

Beloved nail artist Naomi Yasuda is the genius behind Rita Ora’s unbelievable foot-long jewel and pearl nail chains. Using Manucurist nail polish in the shade “Licorice” to get that jet black base, Yasuda revealed on her Instagram story that she “incorporated classic Chanel elements” like deconstructed, handmade pearls to achieve a memorable nail look that we certainly won’t stop thinking about for days to come.

Suki Waterhouse’s watercolour eyeshadow

Fresh off of spring’s hottest mini-series, Daisy Jones & The Six, model, singer and actress (actually, add one of our favourite TikTok follows to the list of her accolades, too), Suki Waterhouse, who joked that she’d turn up to the Met Gala tonight thinking the theme was Karl Marx, blew us away with her glam tonight. Paired with her usual romantic bouncy blowout, courtesy of stylist Candice Birns, Waterhouse gave us watercolour paint-chic with a multi-shade pastel eyeshadow look that we’re going to try and recreate ASAP.

Lil Nas X’s pearl-encrusted…everything

Lil Nas X at the 2023 Met Gala

In a look that can probably be seen from space, Lil Nas X arrived at the Met Gala in silver body paint, glitter, pearls, jewels, and honestly, not much else (see for yourself), right down to his pearl-encrusted nails. Taking the naked dress trend to an extreme, Lil Nas X’s look was the masterful work of none other than Pat McGrath and her team.

Doja Cat as Choupette

Forget a simple cat eye. Doja Cat went for cat face. (Er, in addition to a not-so-simple cat eye.) In what’s sure to become one of the Met Gala’s most memorable looks ever, Doja Cat walked the carpet paying homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette, complete with prosthetics and all. Her makeup was the work of Emmy-winning makeup artist Ernesto Casillas, and FX makeup artist Malina Stearns. “We paid tribute to Karl Lagerfield’s beloved cat Choupette and gave Doja a sexy, feline eye using Charlotte Tilbury’s The Feline Flick Liquid Eyeliner,” wrote Casillas on Instagram.

Jessica Chastain’s blonde wig

Sans her signature red locks, a totally unrecognizable Chastain told reporters on the Met Gala red carpet that her new blonde wig “is not forever; it’s for Karl.” Chastain paired her new ‘do with dark sunglasses (and a gorgeous dark smoky eye by makeup artist Kristofer Buckle underneath) as a nod to Lagerfeld’s signature look. Excuse us while we shed a tear.

Emma Chamberlain’s sleek ‘do and smoky eye

Emma Chamberlain at the 2023 Met Gala
Photography by Getty Images

Courtesy of makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan Fisher, who used the Lancôme Hypnôse Eyeshadow Palette in Bleu Hypnotique to achieve the metallic-smoky look, Emma Chamberlain arrived at the Met Gala donning a smoky eye we can’t stop obsessing over. Blue smoky eyes have been poised for a proper comeback for several seasons now, but we think Ms. Chamberlain may finally be the one to officially usher the look in and do it in a modern way. As for her stunning waist-length hair (quite the departure from the star’s choppy bob), it was courtesy of hairstylist Sami Knight, who used Hairitage tools to craft the Carla Bruni-inspired ‘do. “I always like to wash my extensions before use,” says Knight. “I find it makes them blend better with the clients natural hair, as it opens the cuticle somewhat.”

Next, the stylist applied blended Luxy Hair extensions in three different shades (Dark Brown, Cool Dark brown, and a touch of Mocha Bronde Balyage, “just to account for differences in hair shade; hair is often darker in the back, and lighter in the top and front naturally”), teased it at the roots and curled the ends before finishing the look with a baby blue headband. Oh, and you guessed it, hairspray was a must every step of the way.

In celebration of the brand’s four-year anniversary, UOMA Beauty has unveiled a new campaign inspiring us all to be our truest and most authentic selves. With a name that translates to “beautiful” in Nigeria’s Igbo language, this brand has been inspired by its own cultural heritage to rewrite the beauty industry’s rules regarding diversity and inclusivity. The “We See You” campaign captures a beautifully diverse array of faces, including models like Jasmine Saunders and Leomie Anderson. Each photo embraces a multicultural mix of beauty — because UOMA Beauty believes that skin colour is more than just a colour, it’s a representation of identity, history, and the way our pasts push us forward. With this campaign, the brand invites us all to consider looking at our varying skin tones with that same perspective.

Glossier unveils a new line of polished lip products

Photography courtesy of Glossier

Inspired by all the best standout suits in our lives (think: birthday and business suits), Glossier‘s latest lip launch is a nine-piece collection of buttery smooth lip crèmes labelled G Suit. Softer than a liquid lipstick, these lippies are formulated with a nourishing blend of shea butter and black raspberry seed oil. The finish is a soft-focused, demi-matte look with a “petal-like” feel, thanks to its rose wax sicilia and orchid complex ingredients. Comfortable and chic, trust in this product to polish off any pout so you look instantly dressed up with a single swipe over the lips.

The Ordinary drops its third cleanser

Photography courtesy of The Ordinary

There’s always something brewing in The Ordinary’s O. Lab, and the release of a new cleanser marks the brand’s fifth drop to come out of The O. Lab universe. Introducing the Glycolipid Cream Cleanser, a suitable-for-all-skin-types cleanser with a gentle foam-free cream texture. The plant-derived glycolipid cleansing agent is this product’s hero ingredient, allowing for a non-stripping cleanse that is still superb for makeup removal.

Céla by Celine Tadrissi has two new products packed with Canadian ingredients

Céla by Celine Tadrissi just dropped a Northern Facial collection inclusive of two new product offerings powered by Canadian ingredients. The Northern Face Oil was made in collaboration with Seneca’s Centre for Innovation in Life Sciences and features sustainably sourced red maple bark extract in its formula, which restores skin firmness by promoting collagen and elastin production. In addition, the Northern Eye Cream draws upon its leading bakuchiol (a natural retinol alternative) ingredient to reduce the appearance of ageing signs like wrinkles, fine lines, and dryness.

Evio Beauty adds a jelly cleanser to its EvioSkin line

The latest addition to Canadian brand Evio Beauty’s skincare line is a soothing facial cleanser dubbed the First Cleanse Jelly Cleanser. Designed to dissolve the day’s buildup of residue, this cleanser’s soap-free formula taps into the power of hyaluronic acid and antioxidant ingredients to help repair skin damage. At the same time, amino and omega fatty acids work gently to reduce redness and inflammation, while eucalyptus works to prevent and heal acne. You can preorder the cleanser as of April 28 through the Evio Beauty website.

Over the past few decades, the beauty world has grown exponentially, which unfortunately also includes its carbon footprint. With the rise of the beauty social sphere and public awareness of environmental issues, consumers demand more transparency and better environmental practices from their favourite brands—and they’re delivering! Individual changes in self-care practices can have a positive environmental impact. It all comes down to daily choices.

Making more eco-conscious choices when shopping for new products and establishing your beauty routine is easier than ever. While positively impacting the environment may feel like a hopeless feat for a single person, every little bit helps. Here are five tips to get you started.

Shop from environmentally conscious brands

Make sure you buy products from companies committed to shrinking their carbon footprint, like Aveeno®. The brand is making a number of changes to its packaging to be more sustainable, including their popular Daily Moisturizing Lotion, which is now packaged in 30 per cent post-consumer recycled plastic. Committed to being an environmentally conscious brand, more than 70 per cent of all Aveeno® packaging is recyclable. They’re also working towards expanding their line of existing refillable packaging, along with plant-based, home-compostable wipes with recyclable packaging. By 2025, they aim to be 100 per cent recyclable and reusable and run their manufacturing sites solely with electricity. As a consumer, try your best to be educated on the brands you invest in.

Recycle your jars and packaging

Find different uses for your jars and packaging to avoid them getting tossed in a landfill. Hot tip: clean out empty makeup bottles and use them as travel-friendly containers for your go-to skincare products or reuse glass jars to keep your beauty drawer organized—they’re perfect for holding bobby pins and hair elastics.

Pay more attention to ingredients

Simplify your routine using cleaner products, like the Aveeno® Daily Moisturizing Lotion. It’s formulated with prebiotic oat and rich emollients and has been proven to protect and balance your skin’s natural moisture barrier and keeps your skin hydrated for 24 hours. Plus, it’s free of fragrance, parabens and dyes. In addition, the brand uses a patented system called the “Global Aquatic Ingredient Assessment” tool to protect aquatic life and neighbouring ecosystems. Choosing clean beauty ingredients that are derived from natural sources and are non-toxic can help protect the ocean. All this said, look deeper into ingredients that are good for you and the planet.

Reduce your consumption habits

Be mindful of overconsumption. It can be tempting to hop onto new beauty trends. Ask yourself: do I want to use this product or do I want to buy this product? A less-is-more approach is better both for your skin and your wallet. Stick to refilling products you know and love when necessary. Plus: makeup and skincare products expire faster than you think. If you hoard more than you can handle, it can lead to unnecessary waste. Try embracing a minimalist, “less is more” routine.

Use reusable beauty tools

Reduce, reuse and recycle—that’s the name of the eco-conscious game and also applies to your choice of beauty tools. It’s time to get rid of those single-use products once and for all and invest in reusable cotton pads, makeup remover pads, cotton swabs (yes, those exist), and face and eye masks. Try opting for the Aveeno® Refillable Moisture Pouch or the Calm + Restore Nourishing Oat Cleanser Refill Pouch to kick-start your new reusable packaging routine. Minimizing your ecological footprint all comes down to these simple green swaps; you’ll be amazed by how easily you can adopt a more eco-friendly beauty regimen.

As the internet continues to be enamoured with Sofia Richie‘s wedding, new details are emerging daily about the luxurious, South of France-situated soirée. And since FASHION detailed all the products used to create Richie’s bridal glam earlier this week, there’s been an update on the beauty front regarding the bride’s wedding day nails. Thanks to a TikTok posted by Richie’s nuptial nail artiste, we’ve got the low-down on how to recreate the Sofia Richie wedding nails and all the products you’ll need to do so.

While celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff was behind Richie’s timeless glam and hairstylist to the stars Kathleen Hair was responsible for her bridal bun, London-based manicurist Georgia Rae was the talented manicurist on nail duty. As a self-titled “minimal nail artist,” Rae’s expertise lent itself fittingly to Richie’s soft glamour wedding aesthetic.

This week, everyone from wedding guests to members of Richie’s glam squad have offered up a unique behind-the-scenes insight into the happenings of the Richie Grainge wedding, by way of elaborate beauty breakdowns and entertaining GRWM segments on TikTok. Posting the details of Richie’s rehearsal dinner and nuptial nails on the app, Rae is the latest to reveal her creative process — following other key wedding players like Dubroff and celebrity tan artist Isabel Alysa.

For both events, Rae prepped Richie’s nails using Navy Professional tools to create a clean, flawless base for the polishes to come. She then opted for a soft square shape (which she shares is Richie’s signature) to match the elegant mood of the wedding weekend. For the bride’s rehearsal dinner nails, Rae used a single coat of OPI’s beloved Funny Bunny polish to create a milky white manicure. “I decided to do one coat because it kind of allowed Sofia’s natural skin tone to come through and almost created a custom shade for her — which I loved,” shares Rae in her TikTok post. As for the big day, two coats of Bio Sculpture’s Sweet Candy Breath polish brought Richie’s official wedding manicure together for a look that whispers “quiet luxury gone bridal.”

To ensure that Richie’s hands were moisturized throughout the weekend (because, let’s be real, all eyes were on her and her ring), Rae sealed in each manicure with Chanel skincare for an extra layer of nourishment that wouldn’t leave behind an oily or greasy finish. I mean, what could be more luxurious than topping off your wedding mani with a little Chanel?

Lizzo is a bona fide style icon. Since she came onto the scene, the “Good As Hell” singer has never been one to shy away from innovative fashion statements, especially when the ensemble involves bearing some skin. Her most recent head-turning look was just this week, when the star stepped out in a crystal see-through dress. The glistening, sheer purple outfit is reminiscent of the famous Swarovski crystal gown that Rihanna sported to the 2014 CFDA awards — even still, it is so uniquely Lizzo. The fashion moment has (understandably) been the topic of social media praise since the first snaps hit the internet. To her fans, Lizzo’s ability to consistently turn these types of risqué looks is a testament to her unshakable self-love. Now, she’s working to help others achieve the same self-confidence. Earlier this year, the singer announced her partnership with the Dove Self-Esteem Project, which aims to address confidence issues resulting from social media use.

Part of what makes Lizzo so great is that her aura of confidence is contagious. From her lyrics of self-assurance to her refreshingly candid social media presence, she seems to have it all together. But this has not always been the case. “My self-love journey was literally for survival,” she says. Since she began to gain popularity within the notoriously critical entertainment industry, Lizzo has become an advocate for body acceptance — not out of desire, but out of necessity — in response to the fatphobia she’s often received. “I thought, ‘If I’m going to continue living in this body, I have to find a way to like myself.’” And that she did. The star has become synonymous with the concept of self-love, and now she wants to help young people struggling to attain it.

Lizzo’s partnership with the Dove Self-Esteem Project addresses how social media can worsen our feelings of self-worth. A key part of the initiative is The Selfie Talk, a guide for parents and teachers wanting to discuss digital photo altering and unrealistic beauty standards with kids and teens. One of the tools available for download is Dove’s Confidence Kit, a self-esteem resource written by experts in the field designed to help parents and teachers navigate these difficult conversations. The kit was developed as a result of shocking survey findings — like the fact that by the age of 13, 80 per cent of Canadian girls have downloaded a filter or used an app to change the way they look in photos, or that 37 per cent of girls between ages 10 and 17 say they don’t feel confident posting a picture of themselves without editing it first.

“It was much easier before Instagram and TikTok,” says Lizzo. “My heart goes out to young people growing up in a world that’s constantly showing them who they should be.” The singer notes that trends in women’s body types have fluctuated through the decades — and this contributes to falling self-confidence. “Women’s bodies have always been seen as a trend, and this is inherently an issue. It’s so important to find love and acceptance within ourselves, because then no matter what movement or trend comes along, we know that we’re good.”

As for Lizzo’s role in changing the conversation, she’s ready to move past talking about her appearance. “My body has been politicized since I stepped onto the scene wearing leotards. It was shocking to see in 2015, but now you all know what it looks like. You’ve seen it naked, in couture and at the Met Gala. Let’s stop talking about it and normalize bodies just existing.”
