Zoë Kravitz and Makeup Artist Tom Pecheux Talk Natural Beauty
"Take these products and make them your own. Don’t try to look like someone else—just be yourself."
When Tom Pecheux, global beauty director for YSL Beauty, saw Zoë Kravitz on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards, one word came to mind: “Wow!” “I really like women to be chic and irreverent,” he says. “That’s Zoë. That’s the YSL girl.” Pecheux, who is the master of “you but better” makeup, says that subtlety was key to the beauty look for this cover shoot.
“There is nothing overtaking her natural beauty,” he explains. “I can see the light bronzer contouring and the smoky eye with a black smudgy eyeliner, but what I love is when you look at her, you don’t think ‘That makeup is fantastic.’ You think ‘That girl is really beautiful.’ But it’s also not just the makeup; it’s about an attitude—about being who you are and being the first one in your own category.”
It’s a sentiment that rings true for our cover star. Kravitz, who is a makeup ambassador for YSL Beauty, says that today there are so many preconceived ideas when it comes to beauty and how makeup should be worn. “I see a lot of young women wearing more makeup than they need and all trying to look the same,” she says. “That makes me very sad. So I guess what I’d like to say to everyone is ‘Take these products and make them your own. Don’t try to look like someone else—just be yourself.’”
