1970s, ’80s and ’90s kids will recall that there was nothing more electrifying than the novelty of slipping on their mood ring each morning and watching its stone change hues before their very eyes. Today, Gen Z has discovered the wonder of colour-changing products via makeup — an extension of the customization trend that has permeated the beauty industry over the past several years. Colour-changing makeup products (typically lipstick and blush) are pH-activated and powered by a chemical reaction between the product’s ingredients and the wearer’s skin. What could be more customized than that?

RELATED: The Spring 2023 Beauty Trends to Wear Now

“pH is the measure of how acidic an environment is,” explains Alessandro Mendes, vice-president of research and innovation at Cosmetica Laboratories Inc. in Toronto. The level of acidity in anything, from our skin to a swimming pool, can be determined using the scientific scale of pH, which ranges from 0 to 14 (with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most basic). Healthy skin naturally stabilizes around the 5 to 5.5 mark.

What causes the colour-changing phenomenon in makeup products is the interaction between skin and an ingredient called bromo acid dye, a type of pigment commonly used in these products. The pH level of the skin that this dye is exposed to upon application determines the shade.

What causes the colour-changing phenomenon in makeup products is the interaction between skin and an ingredient called bromo acid dye.

“When you have a product that looks transparent or translucent in its packaging, for instance, it means that the level of pigment we can see with our eyes is very low,” says Mendes. “The reason we don’t see it until it’s applied is that the pH of the product is higher than the skin’s level of 5.5.” When the two come into contact, the pH levels react to each other, forming a shade that’s unique to the wearer.

Since the pH of everyone’s skin is generally around the same level, getting different hues from person to person relies on a few other factors, too. These include complexion shade, where on the face the product is applied (for example, the pH of the skin on our lips is higher than on the rest of our face) and even how dry or hydrated the skin is. While the differences in the shades and intensity of pH-adapting makeup from person to person may be subtle to the naked eye, as far as unique-to-each-wearer makeup goes, colour-changing products may just be customizable beauty’s final frontier.

Below, discover some of the hottest shade-changing lip products to join in on the fun.

We’re finally emerging from the depths of a long, grey winter, folks. And with hints of spring in the air, that means we can dream of warmer, more colourful times ahead. With the Spring 2023 fashion shows in our rearview and photo galleries full of inspo at our fingertips, it’s time to start dipping our toes into sunnier looks — starting with our makeup. Because if we can’t store our fuzzy hats just yet, why not complement them with a flush of rosy blush or a swipe of colourful eyeliner?

RELATED: The Beauty Hacks I’ve Learned on TikTok and Instagram This Month

From pops of colour to sparkling bedazzlements, the top spring 2023 beauty trends are fresh and fun. Discover them all.

Draped blush

Blush draping, whereby you swathe your temples and cheeks in bright and beautiful shades of pink or red, first became popular in the ’70s. Since then, it’s been worn by everyone from Rihanna at the 2017 Met Gala to Arianna Grande this past summer. Thanks to Aliétte, Christian Cowan and Etro, the beauty trend will continue right on into 2023.

The wet look

Would it even be Fashion Month without models who look like they walked off the set of Flashdance? This season at Atlein, Giambattista Valli, Balmain and Dries Van Noten (not to mention Marni, Proenza Schouler and Molly Goddard), dry hair was out in favour of slicked-back knots, damp finger waves and straight-up stringy manes.

Embellishment

Glitter: it’s the ultimate pick-me-up — and this season’s key makeup artist’s all agree. From the sparkly brows at Peter Do to the metallic-and-sequin lids at Giorgio Armani, a little bit of embellishment is always a good idea.

Bright mattes

Tuck your nude eyeshadow palette back in your makeup bag, because Spring 2023 is all about brights. Purple, green, orange, yellow and blue are all up for grabs, as are colourful wings, blocked shadow and delicate accenting. Do it your way! Just make sure the finish is matte — à la Stella Jean, Prabal Gurung, Paul & Joe and DSquared2 — and the colour is Day-Glo.

Clean skin

This season’s skin looks just like… skin. There’s no heavy coverage, no dewy shine or flat matte texture. If we didn’t know better, we’d think the models at Erdem, Missoni, Brandon Maxwell and Altuzarra weren’t wearing any makeup at all.

Sprays of colour

Fearless makeup lovers, your face is your canvas — and it’s time to let it steal the spotlight. At Spring 2023 shows like Marni, Etro, Stella Jean and Act N°1, vibrant colour was sprayed over foreheads, brows and temples, shrugging off the notion that bright hues are just for the lids, cheeks and lips. “There aren’t any rules,” this look says. And it’s true.

From new products launching daily to the fast-paced comings and goings of TikTok-led makeup trends, there’s always something going on in the beauty universe. The object of the cosmetic industry’s desire this week? Mascara. Three coming-soon mascaras have now been put on our radar, and two viral ways to wear this lash-coating makeup staple have caught our attention.

RELATED: The Most Striking Fall 2023 Runway Beauty Trends

Simply put, mascara is having a moment — and there is much to be discussed. Allow us to bring you up to speed.

Major new launches from Fenty Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics

We kicked off the week with news from Fenty Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics that both brands will be dropping their own respective mascaras in the very near future. We’ll be able to get our hands on Fenty’s Hella Thicc long-wearing mascara first — with an online release date of March 28 (and March 31 in-store). Upon its arrival, it promises to deliver a high dose of volume in a creamy ultra-black formula. And it’s a total makeup bag must-have for the spring and summer seasons since it’s sweat-, humidity-, and transfer-proof. Launching soon after, on April 6, is Kylie Cosmetics’ first-ever foray into the world of mascara dubbed Kylash (ha!). It packs a lash-lifting punch into a chic powder pink tube that is super on-brand for Miss Jenner. Its claims? A flake-, smudge-, and clump-free product that provides multidimensional definition in a single swipe. That being said, we’ll take them both. Thanks!

A win for sustainability

In another exciting announcement that came mid-week, we learned of the first-ever post-consumer recycled fiber filaments used in mascara and eyebrow brushes. The innovation is coming down the pipeline by way of a new collection of sustainable brushes made by Medmix’s beauty brand, Geka. This debut is a thrilling development on the sustainability front, with brushes in the new range now made of 65% recycled polyethylene terephtalate (a common synthetic fibre used for product packaging)  or polybutylene terephthalate (a similar type of synthetic resin used in the making of electrical and small machine parts).

Cocktails, anyone?

Switching apps now, two mascara trends are circulating on #beautytok. The first is an application technique labeled “mascara cocktailing” — but there’s no alcohol required here. Instead, the process involves layering a custom concoction of mascaras with varying formulations (think: curling, thickening, lengthening) and brush types to create a lash look that ticks all your boxes. Even Jessica Alba‘s a fan of the technique!

Lighten up

If your lash preferences are more laidback and subdued, then TikTok’s brown mascara trend may be more to your taste. Content creators on the app are exchanging their classic black mascaras for the softer appeal of chocolate brown-coated lashes. This rich hue is universally stunning on all eye colours, brightening up light green and blue irises while making the darkness of brown eyes appear deeper and more alluring. TikTok’s trendiest brown mascaras? YSL Beauty’s “Uninhibited Brown” Lash Clash and Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara in the “Chocolate Brown” shade, which both lend themselves to beauty’s endless quest for the very best minimalist makeup products to satisfy its current obsession with barely-there beauty.

So, here’s what we’ve learned this week: there’s no one way to wear mascara — or to make it. In fact, it appears we’ve been spoiled for choice. The only question left to be answered now is, how do you like yours? And where will you be shopping for it?

Let’s get a little nostalgic, shall we? Imagine it’s the year 2016. Your brows are blocky and meticulously drawn on. Everything from your foundation to your liquid lipstick (Kylie Lip Kit, of course—your most prized possession at the time) is matte. You had no idea that a few years later, beauty would go through its “glazed donut” era. How were you to know that your makeup drawer full of ultra-matte products would soon be replaced with a much more minimal regimen?

Fast forward to present day and the skin finish trend du jour is a halfway point between matte glam from yesteryear and a modern, glowy complexion. Enter: “cloud skin,” the viral trend bringing soft matte makeup back. Sort of.

@victorialyn Cloud Skin Makeup!☁️ Loving these soft matte looks @hungvanngo 😍 Would you try this spring trend? #makeup #beauty #foundation #cloudskin ♬ Lo-fi hip hop – NAO-K

The term “cloud skin” was coined by MAC Cosmetics UK’s Director Of Makeup Artistry Dominic Skinner. Its name speaks to the soft-focus finish that this look seeks to achieve. “It’s velvety, blurred — it’s like dewy skin and matte skin had a baby and it’s gonna be trending so hard for Spring,” explains TikToker @victorialyn in a makeup tutorial.

From OG beauty gurus to the next generation of BeautyTok creators, cloud skin has been co-signed by makeup artists and lovers alike. In fact, the hashtag #cloudskin currently has 35 million views on TikTok. As the look circulates through the beauty community with tons of tutorials and interpretations to sift through, there are a couple of fundamental tips to keep in mind.

@dominic_mua #CloudSkin #MakeupTrend ☁️#MACCreator #MACCosmetics #MAC @maccosmetics ♬ Flowers – Miley Cyrus

The first step toward achieving cloud skin is in its name. Before you reach for your primer and foundation, prep and hydrate your skin with a base of moisturizing skincare. Then, mix a couple pumps of luminous matte foundation with a mattifying primer. As you blend, you’ll reveal a fluffy concoction of cloud skin foundation, with just the right amount of sheen. “When this dries down, the finish of it is like the perfect soft matte and that’s basically what cloud skin is — a reintroduction to soft matte makeup,” shares @victorialyn in her tutorial.

As you carry on with the rest of your routine, stick with a matte concealer and top off any cream blushes or bronzers with your ol’ faithful powder products. This will give you the right balance of radiant but matte skin. Tap into a blurring powder with a powder puff to set your skin, spritz with a matte setting spray to make it last all day, et voila!

@purenavamakeup Replying to @Makayla Cooper Cloud skin tutorial for dry skin, part 1 – The base! #cloudskintutorial #cloudskin #makeupfordryskin ♬ original sound – Makeup Tips For Everyday Women

“Us dry skin girlies can’t do matte,” commented one user on @purenavamakeup’s viral cloud skin tutorial (above). The MUA responded with two tutorials on how to achieve this look, even if your skin is on the drier side.

The main takeaways? Load up on hydrating skincare products first. Then, apply luminous foundation by pressing it into your skin with a damp sponge. Lastly, use cream products, such as blush and bronzer, and go over them with a setting powder (rather than choosing matte products from the get-go). Remember, cloud skin is not entirely matte; it’s more of a soft matte with hints of underlying dewiness. So you can absolutely work hydration into your routine without compromising the look.

So, is cloud skin the dream solution that meets 2016’s matte makeup and 2023’s glowy skin in the middle? If so, we welcome it with open arms.

As another fashion month wraps up, we find ourselves more inspired than ever by the beauty looks seen on the runways. If you’ve been searching for fresh new hair and makeup ideas, look no further than the the Fall 2023 runway beauty trends.

From hair that was both over-styled with excess amounts of gel and backcombed with reckless abandon, to playful makeup that experimented with pastels and glitter, the vibe this season was: anything goes. And it’s this rebellious creative expression that leaves us feeling inspired to approach our makeup in new ways as the year goes on.

Below, we’ve rounded up six Fall 2023 runway beauty trends that sum up the season.

Bow Beauty

With the meteoric rise of coquette beauty, seeing bows everywhere is to be expected. And the runway was no exception. So what was the high fashion approach to bow beauty this season? Miniature ribbon appliqué adorning models’ hair and cheeks, and hair manipulated into intricate bow shapes.

Pure Pastels

Autumnal beauty rules be gone! The Fall 2023 shows proved that playing with pastel makeup isn’t exclusive to spring and summer. In fact, butter-yellow blends of eyeshadow, abstract swipes of mint green, and powder pink lower lashes are encouraged for the upcoming fall season this year.

Oil-Slick Hair

Somewhere between the wet look and a clean slicked back bun is the oil-slick hair trend. Whether it’s combed away from the face, swept aside, or left down, the one requirement for this lacquered look was that hair must appear styled with thick globs of gel and ultra-shiny oil — and only then can this super-glossy texture be achieved.

All That Glitters

Using glitter in makeup is notoriously messy and difficult to remove, but that didn’t deter the makeup team at shows like Diesel and Giambattista Valli from adding the glitzy texture to their glam. From full-on hair and body glitter to shimmering mosaic eyelids and statement lips, apparently, all that glitters isn’t just gold — but blue, green and orange, too.

Bedhead Hair

Not one for oil-slick hair? Perhaps you’ll prefer bedhead hair — the deliberately disheveled look that made an appearance at shows like Miu Miu and Yohji Yamamoto. Making a purposeful mess of beauty, flyaways were accentuated and hair was teased out and tousled to create this realistic take on “I woke up like this” beauty.

The Gothaissance Goes On

Matte black lipstick, dramatic graphic liner, and deconstructed black shadow defined the current state of gothic beauty in 2023, and each look was striking in its own right. Thought we’d left goth glam in 2022? Think again. Gothic beauty lives on through the Fall 2023 runways.

By definition, the coquette (“a woman who flirts”) aesthetic channels an angelic sort of old-school beauty that draws upon notions of hyper-femininity and flirtation. According to Beauty Daily by Clarins, coquette beauty is the number one rising beauty trend on TikTok so far this year, with 1.7 billion views (and counting) on the app. Once TikTok’s algorithm has decided you’re a candidate for consuming coquette glamour content, prepare for an influx of inspiration that feels like it was plucked from a Sofia Coppola film or a live adaptation of a Jane Austen novel.

As told by TikTok and its in-the-know makeup artists and creators, true coquette beauty is not complete without a high concentration of pink products distributed between eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick. Skin is kept soft, simple, and set with powder. Because what feels more coquette than dabbing away at our cheeks with a powder puff? Next, the eyes come alive with doll-like lashes, a swipe of liquid liner, or a brightening burst of white eyeliner on the waterline for a doe-eyed effect. And finally, pearl finishes are added via iridescent highlighters to the high points of the face, like the brow bone and cheeks, for an ethereal glow.

If you’re fully committed to adopting this aesthetic, consider stocking your makeup station with brands packaged in pastel pink like Too Faced and Rare Beauty, or complete with bow details like Dior to take this trend all the way.

Hairstyles and accessories are essential to building a coquette beauty look. A head full of bows, a free-flowing cascade of bouncy curls, or a wispy set of curtain bangs will do — so long as that soft whimsical feeling and wink of playfulness is still present. Conveniently, this season’s fashion month shows have been all about the bow. Sandy Liang sent models down the runway with miniature bows adorning their crowns in New York, while Yuhan Wang tied bows of lace and ribbon into models’ braids in London. Lest we forget the Simone Rocha Fall 2023 show, where models’ cheeks were decorated with dainty bow appliqués.

From the runway to the red carpet, celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski have, perhaps unknowingly, contributed to the trend with recent coquettish hair moments. Earlier this month, the model posed before photographers at a Viktor & Rolf event with a curly disco hairdo that could easily translate on TikTok as a coquette hairstyle. Curls do make a lovely canvas for bows, after all. And while Em Rata’s spirals may be the work of a perm, natural curls are coquette material, too. Whether they’re being manipulated into a braided style or picked to afro perfection, curls can take on any coquette hair transformation.

We’ll be keeping our eye on the coquette beauty trend as the year goes on to see who embraces it and what sub-genres come out of it (we’re watching you, dark coquette!). To the craft store for mini-bows, we go!

This article was originally published on October 6, 2022 and has been updated.

When it comes to makeup, Doja Cat is a woman of the world. She had her E-girl phase. She long embraced an alien aesthetic. Now, after shaving her head and eyebrows, she has entered an “I’ll try anything” era. And we’re all better for it.

To mark the start of Paris haute couture fashion week on January 23, the pop star further cemented herself as a boundary-breaking beauty icon — no catwalk necessary. Sitting front row at the Schiaparelli Spring 2023 show, Doja Cat was adorned head to toe in ruby-red Swarovski crystals. The look — which reportedly took nearly five hours to complete and involved 30,000 hand-applied gems — was created by famed makeup artist Pat McGrath, and speaks to the Planet Her singer’s multidimensional beauty prowess.

Just two days later, Doja Cat attended Viktor & Rolf show in Paris on January 25, wearing an androgynous look with false eyelashes as facial hair. Later the same day, she arrived at the Valentino show with a completely new aesthetic.

This is not the first time Doja Cat has made the front row of fashion week her creative playground. If history is any indication, it also certainly won’t be the last.

Recall, back in September 2022, when Doja Cat (quite literally) went out shining to commemorate the end of Fashion Month. At the Awake Mode show on October 4, the 27-year-old stepped out with her skin covered in a glimmering layer of gold thanks to makeup artist Laurel Charleston.

In fact, while attending events across the city, Doja Cat sported variations of sculptural eyebrows, body paint and intergalactic illustrations. To attend the Mônot show on October 1, her face was coated in white, with dark blue contouring and bright red lipstick. On her forearms, black designs mimicked the look of opera gloves.

Earlier that same day, she attended the Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood show with a completely different ensemble — because, of course. Thin spikes sat in place of eyebrows and dark lightning-bolt eyeliner crept onto her nose.

As the week went on, her looks got more shocking — hence the aforementioned gold finale. For the Givenchy show, makeup artist Sophia Sinot gave her smudged black checkerboard-design lips with studs for eyebrows. To attend a party hosted by Beyoncé, the singer’s whole face became an optical illusion thanks to an expertly-placed swirling line. “After I was finished she asked me if I could sign her neck like an artist signs their work when they’re finished,” Charleston wrote on Twitter. Herein lies the genius of Doja Cat’s maquillage mantra.

Think about it: for the Grammy-winning singer, makeup is yet another way to perform. And lately, she’s been leaning heavily into this aspect of her artistry. After shaving her head and eyebrows on Instagram Live over the summer, Doja Cat has used her face as an unrestricted canvas. More and more, the singer goes against the beauty grain — from painting her own detailed facial designs to sporting a cow pattern on her head. With each new wonderfully weird look, she advocates for beauty as a means of art instead of a boring background feature.

These days, show-stopping style statements are hard to come by. With minimalist makeup routines reigning supreme and red-carpet looks often blandly replicating the runway, there’s a lack of risk-taking among celebrity beauty. Doja Cat, on the other hand, uses makeup as an accessory that’s up for interpretation and meant to garner a reaction.

Case in point: for the Balenciaga show back in October, she sported an eyeshadow look that resembled a black eye and split lip. “I think people are going to love it,” she told Vogue. “And I think that, as they do, people are also not going to love it.” But either way, Doja Cat doesn’t seem to care. The thing is, this subversive style isn’t supposed to appeal to everyone. Who can forget when Lady Gaga wore her meat dress to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards? She was ridiculed at the time, but it’s since gone down as one of the biggest moments in recent fashion history.

Of course, an important element of any memorable ensemble is the personality behind it. Doja Cat stands out not only because of the masterful creations on her skin, but the passionate energy that she carries with each design.

As we head into a new Fashion Month, we can surely expect even more surprising surrealist Doja Cat statements. By pushing against beauty boundaries and sporting thought-provoking paintings on her face, the star’s makeup aesthetic continues to be unapologetically unique. And isn’t that what art is all about? In the immortal words of TikTok: I don’t want to be pretty, I want to be iconic. If that’s Doja Cat’s mission, consider it accomplished.

The makeup industry’s newest beauty secret is out — Korean beauty spatulas are the key to achieving a glass skin-like foundation finish. From #beautytok creators to celebrity makeup artists like Chanel’s Nina Park, we’ve seen these K-beauty spatulas go mainstream thanks to their satisfyingly smooth application.

We could swipe for hours on end through TikTok’s #makeupspatula hashtag — whose flawless foundation results has amassed over nine million views. The viral tool behind this technique is Korean beauty brand Picasso’s makeup spatula, made in collaboration with makeup artist Ham Kyung-sik.

Canadian MUA Tami El Sombati tells FASHION that the K-beauty spatula uses a much thinner application than other makeup applicator tools, which is what creates that “your skin but better” finish. “The spatula allows you to apply sheer, even layers, without the tool absorbing any of the product or leaving streaks like a brush can,”she explains. It should be noted, though, that the viral videos that have tempted us to try this trend often begin with a base of skin that already appears smooth and free of texture — which adds to the final outcome, of course.

El Sombati credits Korean makeup artists as the masters of the beauty spatula, and talked us through how anyone, from beauty amateurs to makeup pros, can try the technique.

First and foremost, you’ll need a liquid foundation for optimal results. On either a clean makeup palette or the back of your hand, apply the foundation and then run the thin edge of your spatula through it before applying the product to your face in smaller sections — rather than those satisfying long swipes you’ve seen online, El Sombati suggests. “This will definitely take some practice, but the idea is for it to create a sheer, even layer, and of course you can build by adding more layers to gradually increase coverage if needed.” You’ll also want to use a light hand during application to avoid picking up other layers with your spatula tool. “Once your foundation is on in one section, you can then blend it to perfection with a damp sponge as you go — that way you’re blending the sections before they set by themselves since they’re so thin,” shares El Sombati.

@jennypysh_ would y’all try this or na? #koreanmakeup #foundationhack #kbeauty #makeupspatula ♬ FEEL THE GROOVE – Queens Road, Fabian Graetz

If you’re looking for an all-in-one tool to create a full face base with (say, foundation, concealer, contour andblush), you may want to skip using makeup spatulas beyond your foundation step. “I’m sure you could use them to apply other liquid products, but you may run the risk of using too much pressure and removing the base you’ve laid down [if you’re adding other makeup on top of the foundation you already applied],” says El Sombati. “The key is to use a liquid product, and be able to control the application, which would need to be a bit more precise in terms of placement with something other than foundation.”

It seems simple enough in theory, but as is the case with most art forms,  practice makes perfect. “You’ll have some trial and error in the beginning for sure, so seeing what works for you, and having all kinds of tutorials online to help guide you is such a great tool,” says El Sombati.

You know what we’re letting go of this year? Eyebrows, apparently.

No, we’re not shaving them off, but with some bleach and even more guts you can get the space alien meets Bella Hadid face that has taken over TikTok. Not convinced? Let me explain.

Thanks to social media, the ultra-minimalist DIY is becoming as common as eyeliner. And even though bleached eyebrows have long been used to make a statement on runways and red carpets, the look isn’t new.

In fact, during the Elizabethan era, eyebrows were regularly bleached or plucked to achieve a bare forehead, per the period’s beauty standards. And in the ‘90s, blonde brows gained major prominence on the faces of Linda Evangelista, Madonna and Kate Moss. During this time, New York City “club kids” (aka pre-internet influencers) also endorsed the style with their extreme after-hours looks.

While the trend continued into the early aughts thanks to fashion “It” girls like Chloë Sevigny and Gwen Stefani, the 2010s saw a strong pivot away from minimalist foreheads. The decade brought about an eyebrow growth spurt, welcoming bushy, fuzzy arches back en vogue.

But in recent years, lightened brows have become a rebellious pandemic trend. Case in point: it was by far the most popular beauty choice at the 2022 Met Gala, and the look has recently been seen on celebs like Julia Fox, Amelia Gray, Bella Hadid, Lady Gaga and most recently, Kylie Jenner.

The difference this time is that bleached eyebrows are no longer only sported by the Madonnas and models of the world. In the age of TikTok self-expression, a look that was once synonymous with high fashion is being democratized. And it’s not hard to see why.

Eyebrows have long been viewed as one of the most important facial features, and we spend a lot of money trying to perfect them, from cosmetic procedures like micro-blading to brow styling products. And as a result, we’ve probably all been burned by brow experimentation mishaps. Therein lies the beauty of the bleaching trend: no eyebrows, no problem. But besides that, a brow-less face is undoubtedly magnetic.

Elongated foreheads create a bigger canvas for face art. Depending on how you style them, light brows can give an ethereal, soft aesthetic, or allow for more elaborate eye makeup.

The look is the welcome antithesis of TikTok’s viral “clean girl” aesthetic, which places no-makeup makeup and “natural” perfection as the ultimate beauty standard. A cousin to the messy Euphoria glitter-infused maquillage, the no-brow trend is perfect for the grungy maximalist.

Plus, with a look you can create at home, lightened eyebrows tap into the DIY culture that has taken over in recent years. But if you’re not ready to commit to bleach, applying concealer and purple corrector will give your arches a temporary taste of the coveted style.

Say it with me: dyeing your brows is arts and crafts! It’s no coincidence that the trend is returning as unconventional and “weird” fashion becomes more popular. With their extraterrestrial allure, bleached brows are not supposed to look conventionally attractive, per se. As the ultimate anti-beauty beauty trend, *anyone* can pull off the look.

This year, runway makeup trends 2022 were two things: expressive and extra. Metallics lined models’ eyelids, brows were bleached to a barely-there state, and faux lashes and kohl black eyeliner were taken to gothic extremes.

As far as runway makeup trends are concerned, designers and makeup artists are the vanguards of what beauty looks are considered “in” or “out” for the upcoming season. With each look sent down a catwalk, there’s the potential to birth the next beauty trend du jour. So when face gems appear at both Peter Do and Halpern — or statement blush debuts at both Gucci and Christian Cowan — we take note of a makeup trend on the rise.

To sum up 2022 in beauty looks, we’ve rounded up the top five runway makeup trends of the year below.

Glam goes goth

Will goth ever die? This year’s runways say not any time soon. Faux curtain lashes fit for a horror movie, witch-length black talon nails, black lacquered lips and of course — the quintessential icon of gothic grunge — black liner smudged smokey eyes signalled that gothic beauty was back (again). In a year where the runways forecasted funeral fashion and Wednesday Addams is having a moment, the resurgence of gothic beauty was all part of the trend cycle.

Ultra-embellished

Nothing says “extra” like a face bedazzled with chunky gemstones, iridescent pearls and OTT glitter. By this definition, 2022 catwalks were a high-class case study in how to achieve maximalist makeup at the highest degree. Move over, TikTok. If you’re not dressed in Schiaparelli haute couture and dripping rhinestone tears, you’re not doing “crying makeup” right.

Mega-bleached brows

Both on and off the runway, bleached brows shifted the beauty paradigm. This subversive beauty trend pushed back against the barely-brushed fluffy brow phenomenon, and broke out in full force at the biggest fashion shows of the year. Love it or hate it, it’s still a major makeup moment.

Statement blush

High-octane pinks and strategic product placement characterized high fashion’s take on statement blush. For these Spring 2023 shows, the standard rules of blush application did not apply. Instead, chiselled cheeks doused in bubblegum powder that blended upwards to frame the forehead were more than welcome.

Major metallics

Copper-coloured hair and chrome textured nails punctuated the 2022 beauty trend space, so runway models painted in foiled metallic finishings are well deserving of a mention on this list. From Dries Van Noten to Giambattista Valli, frosted metal makeup was swept over eyelids for maximum impact.

Who can deny the twinkling temptation of glitter makeup at this time of year? After all, there’s an unspoken rule that sparkle is the unofficial icon of holiday party glamour — and #BeautyTok’s latest trend on the rise elevates this shimmering texture to editorial new heights. Behold: glitter foundation.

@fredrikskoglunddGlitter foundation and lashes✨💞♬ Escapism. – RAYE & 070 Shake

Glitter foundation is an offshoot of the Twilight-inspired “Vampire Skin” trend sparked by artist August Sombatkamrai, who went viral on TikTok during the Halloween season. And not much about this luminescent look has changed the second time around, aside from the more approachable new name — a mixture of liquid foundation and cosmetic-grade glitter as the base of your glam is still the essence of this look. While “vampire skin” may not sound like the most appealing of looks for a New Year’s Eve party, “glitter foundation” sure does.

Not only does TikTok love a shimmering face finish, but so too does the runway. Look to holographic facials sent down the catwalk in Giambattista Valli’s fall 2018 RTW show or Valentino‘s fall 2022 couture catwalk for editorial examples of the trend. Much to our delight, with New Year’s Eve soirées ahead, TikTok’s take on glitter faces is far more subdued.

With advice from on-air makeup expert Veronica Chu and editorial beauty pro Robert Weir, we’re breaking down how to best execute this glittery glam — with all the tips and tricks necessary to ensure your skin won’t suffer in the name of beauty throughout the process. Here’s how to master glitter foundation.

Prep the skin

Before glitter gets involved, you want to begin with a fresh and clean skin canvas. Once you’ve cleansed your face, Chu recommends following up with a facial toner to unclog your pores before sealing everything in with an ultra hydrating moisturizer. The last skincare step? Priming. “I would suggest using a primer that fills the pores and adds moisture to make sure you have the smooth space to apply your glitter,” explains Chu. “The Milk Hydro Grip primer would be perfect for this and it gives you a nice base for the application of the glitter.”

Use your fingertips for a smooth application

Much like different sized and textured paint brushes can alter the outcome of a painting, the same can be said for applying foundation and the finished product of your makeup. When working glitter into your face base routine, Weir advises ditching brushes and sponges altogether in exchange for your fingertips. “You will end up with more glitter in and on a sponge than on your face. I would personally suggest fingers, because the glitter will be stuck in your makeup brush even after multiple washes.”

Choose your glitter colour wisely

The deciding factor regarding exactly which shade of glitter you should select when recreating this beat all comes down to your complexion. As per Weir’s expertise, champagne and white glitter works best for fair skin tones, while gold and bronze pairs well with darker skin. “You want to pick a fine glitter in a light colour,” he insists. “Dark-coloured glitter generally just looks like small dark spots on the face.” The glitter itself should have a milled texture — and should be made for exclusively for cosmetic use.

Apply with care

Ah yes, the fun part! On the back of your hand, mix your go-to liquid foundation with a small amount of glitter to ensure it can be evenly and smoothly applied. In the wise words of Chu, “a little goes a long way with glitter. You don’t need a lot of it for the impact. It’s easier to add more on then try to take some off.” Noted! When going in for application, she also encourages using gentle padding motions instead of dragging or pulling. “If you drag it across your face, the glitter could come off the skin, and you might look a little bit patchy.” Once complete, be sure to take a step back and inspect your glittered work of art in different lighting to get a well-rounded sense of how things are looking before proceeding with the rest of your routine.

A final application tip from Weir? Stick to setting only the under eye area and corners of the nose to avoid dimming your shine.

Don’t forget to double cleanse

It’s no secret that glitter is notoriously stubborn but — as the saying goes — beauty is pain. To safely bring your skin back to its cleanest state, a double cleanse is key. “I would use a cleansing balm like Milk’s Hydro Ungrip Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm first to try and remove a lot of the glitter,” advises Chu. For your second cleanse, she recommends a gentle cleanser followed by a toner to deep cleanse any unwanted particles that may be trapped in your pores post-glitter foundation.

Though our pros have guided us through the best application practices, we can’t stress enough the importance of using the right kind of glitter here — especially if you have sensitive skin. “It’s important to use cosmetic glitter, not craft glitter,” warns Weir. “Some craft glitter has sharp edges that can damage pores and injure eyes.” Once you’ve followed these prepping procedures, Weir tells FASHION that you can safely pull off this look as often as you’d like (and as long as you can withstand finding traces of glitter around!).

Is blush the star of TikTok’s 2022 beauty trends? Summer’s “sunburn blush” turned winter’s frostbitten “I’m cold” makeup look tells us it just may be. The beauty embodiment of Jack Frost nipping at your nose, this viral makeup trend suggests having just escaped frigid temperatures with its telltale rosy cheeks.

With several first snow sightings across Canada this week, we could naturally achieve this look after only a few moments spent outside — but we can also create the illusion of having done so with makeup from the good old indoors. No subzero winter treks required here, this faux-frost routine is about capturing the essence of a winter chill with all the fun and no fuss.

@zoekimkenealy #greenscreen I think this is my favorite TikTok I’ve ever made even tho I felt so basic going outside and taking selfies with my Starbucks it was also the highlight of my day hehe it’s Makeup for serotonin feels and hallmark movie time! It’s the im cold it’s winter and the holidays and fall makeup look tutorial. #wintermakeup #fallmakeuplook #coldmakeup #maccosmetics #benefitcosmetics #makeupforever #wintermakeuplook ♬ august – Taylor Swift

“There are ways you can do your makeup to make people feel things,” shares TikTok’s trendsetting makeup artist @zoekimkenealy, in her viral “I’m cold” makeup tutorial on the app. “Forty five degrees, it’s the holidays, we’re drinking cocoa — that kind of cold,” is the feeling in question that sparked the cold makeup movement.

Gathering inspiration from snowy selfies fresh off of Pinterest (or Emily Ratajkowski’s camera roll) #beautytok participants followed suit with their own cold makeup recreations. Some of the most delightful versions were set to the tune of trending TikTok holiday sounds, like remixes of Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” and a festive Gossip Girl voiceover mashup backed by Wham!’s “Last Christmas” to really lock in the yuletide mood. With one tap of the #coldmakeup hashtag, you can find 19.7 million views worth of cold makeup interpretations, all rosy cheeks warmed up with blush, wintry pink lips and strokes of subtle highlighter, evocative of just-melted snowflakes.

To replicate the trend, begin by applying translucent powder to your usual makeup base for a blurred canvas to work with. The pièce de résistance? Blush, of course. The shade of blush used matters not — instead, the key is your product placement and a generous application. Drape the blush liberally all over the cheeks, on the tip of your nose, and just above the lip.

@bonitravo trying im cold makeup but w/ my skin tone (ib: @zoekimkenealy) #blackgirlmakeup #imcoldmakeup ♬ original sound – 𝑵𝑨𝑻𝑪𝑺𝑳𝑼𝑽𝑹❦

The “Black girl” and “brown girl” versions of this TikTok trend serve as helpful reference points for how to achieve this chilled effect on darker, more melanated skin tones by using different shades. Baby pink and orange blushes layered on lighter skin tones do the trick, while bright pink and berry tones pop on melanin-rich cheeks.

“I’m not built for winter but at least my makeup looks cute,” says makeup artist and 2022 Sephora Squad member Sumaya Yusuf in her glitzy take on the trend for deeper complexions. “I’m not black but I’m brown and girl I wanted to do this so bad but thanks to you I now have an idea how to,” comments an inspired fan.

@ysumaya I’m not built for the winter but at least my makeup looks cute ❄️ my take on the “I’m cold” makeup trend that I LOVE 💙 ib: @zoekimkenealy #wintermakeuplook #makeuptutorial #imcoldmakeup ♬ original sound – ci

Next, eyes are swept lightly with a neutral eyeshadow, brows are minimally brushed, and lips are blotted with a semi-matte shade of your choosing  — but a neutral rouge closest to your natural lip colour is recommended. Keep the final look matte or add tinsel-like touches of highlighter to the inner corner of the eye, eyelids and nose for a little holiday flair. Lipgloss is optional but glamorous always.

So, cold makeup is the latest beautytok fixation to come out of the app’s obsession with makeup pretty much anything a makeup moment (see: crying makeup). In support of these ever-changing trends, it appears this generation of social media users will try almost anything once in the name of beauty. And in this case, it turns out to be très cute.

After all, it’s not uncommon these days to paint a full face of makeup if only to wear it working from home, so long as it helps liven up an otherwise mundane day indoors. Not to mention the power of makeup to make you feel something, be it confident… or cold. If it conjures up joyous feelings of the first brush of warmth upon returning home after a chilly excursion out in the snow sans the snow, we’ll give it a shot.

Billie Eilish fans will be “Happier Than Ever” about the release of the star’s second fragrance, Eilish No.2. The antithesis of her debut scent Eilish, No. 2 is much darker and moodier this time around. The sleek almost-black bottle contrasts the original gold packaging, while sweet vanilla notes have been swapped out for more earthy and woodsier scents. Leading with Italian bergamot and apple blossom, this fragrance flows into spicy papyrus and black pepper notes followed by palo santo and ebony woods in the dry down.

There’s nothing quite like marinating in your ennui. Sure, being happy is great, but there are days when I’d rather listen to grim music, revel in the gloomy weather and scribble my surly thoughts in a notebook. Sometimes, we all just want to be sad. And that feeling comes to life in TikTok’s latest beauty trend: crying makeup.

A distant cousin to Euphoria’s glitter tears, the trend is — as its name suggests — about appearing like you just shed a few tears. “This one’s for the unstable girlies,” says creator @zoekimkenealy. “You know how we look good when we cry?” — uh, not exactly, but go on — “If you’re not in the mood to cry, here’s how to get the look with makeup.”

Thus lies the trick to completing said maquillage: it’s a performance of pain, not genuine distress. Instead of the realistic mascara-smudged post-cry look, this fresh-faced fad borrows from the clean girl aesthetic. It involves having flushed cheeks, glistening eyelids, a full face of dewy highlighter and slightly smudged lipstick.

@zoekimkenealy

#greenscreen crying makeup look tutorial 😅 Can I go as a crying person for Halloween or is that not a thing #cryingmakeup #tearmakeup #cryingeyes #makeupforhalloween

♬ Show Me How (Album V) – Men I Trust

Instead of being messy, the final product is surprisingly elegant. “I just feel like this makeup look really brings out my feminine energy,” says TikTok creator @morveskim. “I really hate the fact that some people really see crying as showing weakness … The older I get, I realize it’s such a beautiful way to express yourself and to connect with people.”

In 2022, there’s a growing demand for emotional vulnerability online. The allure of oversharing spans across social media — from the rise of crying selfies to the normalization of tearful stream-of-consciousness confessionals. Bella Hadid and Billie Eilish speak candidly about their mental health struggles. Emma Chamberlain, Gen Z’s bona fide It girl, is known — and widely adored — for her perpetual melancholia on the internet. Today, it seems it’s cool to cry.

@angeldreamgirl

but crying in the few glittering tears way, not like sobbing #angelcore #makeup #angelicmakeup #coquette

♬ original sound – Olivia💕

But while the crying makeup trend touts radical vulnerability, it is, first and foremost, about looking conventionally pretty. With glossy eyes, puffy lips and generally soft features, perfecting the aesthetic means achieving a certain subtle beauty. After all, there’s something about quiet dismay that makes someone seem deep, intriguing and, thus, more attractive.

Just look at the cultural fixation on mysteriously glum girls. The “sad girl” trope is one of the most prolific pop culture staples, with unhappy icons like Effy Stonem from Skins, Lux Lisbon from The Virgin Suicides and Nina Sayers from Black Swan forever living on in mood boards and video montages. Throughout the 2010s, aspirational “sad girl” content was its own niche genre on Tumblr. And as other aesthetics born on the blogging platform make their return, Tumblr-esque sorrowful visuals are now resurfacing on TikTok. But a beauty trend based on simply being sad begs the question: are we encouraging emotional openness, or just romanticizing mental health struggles? Because while sharing your sorrow is one thing, actually taking steps to feel better is another.

On TikTok, the “crying makeup” category is full of ethereal-looking faces with modest under-eye jewels and wet-looking cheekbones. Background music includes glamorous-yet-dreary anthems like Lana Del Rey’s “Pretty When You Cry.” With each post, the message is persistent: crying is beautiful.

@ecemcelenli

♬ Pretty When You Cry – Lana Del Rey

Let’s be real: this is not actually how anyone looks after a good sob. Most of us probably more closely resemble Kim Kardashian’s crying face than a dewy, angelic runway model. Despite this, the ever-curated crying girl is put together and presentable when she weeps. She’s not physically dishevelled by her emotions. If anything, her tears elevate her look. With its softness and delicate details, the crying makeup trend presents a version of gloominess that is palatable and appealing. However, sometimes, sadness isn’t pretty. And that’s okay.

Whether it’s by journaling, gazing longingly out the window or painting tears on your cheek, leaning into sorrow can be cathartic. But just because being sad is en vogue doesn’t mean it should become a permanent state of being or an everyday aesthetic to aspire to. Perfecting glossy crying girl makeup can serve as a tool for honouring emotions, but it shouldn’t be a way of dealing with them. Ultimately, even your favourite highlighter can’t solve your problems long term.

ICYMI: Earlier this month, Guerlain dropped a stunning new colour collection of velvet-metal longwear lispticks (Rouge G) and rose oil–laced eyeshadow quads (Ombres G). The colourful assortment was steered by French makeup-artist-turned-beauty-entrepreneur Violette Serrat, who joined the luxury beauty brand last year following sought-after gigs at Dior and Estée Lauder. She also heads her own beauty line, Violette FR, a tightly edited mix of skincare and makeup essentials inspired by French beauty culture. Below, the beauty insider shares her inspiration for the new Guerlain products, her favourite techniques and more.

Tells us about the creative concept behind the new fall makeup collection.

I’m constantly blown away by nature. I can never get used to it. I’m always visiting botanical gardens, taking pictures and getting inspired by things like flowers. And for a long time, I have wanted to do something around moths. We usually picture this brown fluttering insect that’s boring and dusty, but trust me, its wings can resemble an haute couture dress. Moth wings can have black and white prints, dots of reds — it’s absolutely mind blowing.

For this collection, I first started looking into moths and eventually butterflies and really dug into the different species. And what really wowed with me with butterflies is that they are unapologetic with their fabulousness; their wings come in all of these incredible colours as if they are wearing a dress. At the same time, they’re very vulnerable insects. So there’s almost this paradox between strength, power, extreme fragility and vulnerability, which really reminds me of women in a way. As women, I think it’s a strength to be in touch with our vulnerability. So I wanted to explore all of that through colour.

The hues and finishes are quite something. How did you decide on them?

When I studied butterfly wings very closely, I noticed that they have this coating of metallic-like pigments. It’s like a little dust of metal pigment that’s there to help absorb and reflect light — which is why butterfly wings are so vibrant to the eye. I wanted to recreate that same effect for the Rouge G lipsticks, so I worked really hard with the Guerlain lab to try and replicate that same sheen, which was quite difficult and meticulous. It almost felt like haute couture work with all the research and back and forth. And for the lipstick case, I wanted to highlight the butterfly wings as an art piece by zooming in on it.

What about for the eyeshadows?

I took my inspo a bit further and decided to have each one celebrate a different aspect of nature: butterflies, the richness of peacock feathers, the jungle, roses. Within each palette you have gorgeous and unexpected topper shades and are encouraged to play. For example, with Mystic Peacock, I like mixing the blue shade with a bit of water and applying it halfway up my eyelid to my middle crease. I’ll then use the green as a topper by patting it over the blue and all the way to my upper lid. This creates like an ombre effect and a sheer veil of sparkle. It’s quite magical.

Do you have a go-to technique for applying lipstick?

There are two things I do all the time. First, I really like to moisturize the lips by over-applying lip balm. I’ll then remove the excess before applying the lipstick. Then, I’ll overdraw the lips a bit by applying colour just beyond their natural curve. Cheating your own volume a bit, which naturally diminishes with age, really provides this plumpness.

Guerlain also dropped its new Parure Gold Skin Matte Foundation at the same time as this colour collection. What’s a foundation hack you love doing?

One thing I like to do is not apply foundation on the nose. So I’ll apply it lightly everywhere else, but keep the nose bare. This, to me, creates the illusion that you’re not wearing foundation. But, with this technique, you can’t do heavy things like bake your makeup or contour because then you will really see the difference and the effect is lost.

What’s a signature makeup look of yours?

Bright lipstick, very matte, very intense. That’s definitely my personal go-to.

Do you have a favourite skincare product you like to use under makeup?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Violette (@violette_fr)

My Violette FR Boum-Boum Milk. I’ll use it as a prepping mist before makeup but also at the end of a look because the birch sap in the formula gives your complexion this, like, tiny topcoat of shine and it leaves your skin feeling really great. It also helps to lock in other products.

What role does makeup play in your own life?

I don’t care about trends. To me, beauty is very personal and makeup should be used as a mood lifter. I think you should wake up in the morning and ask yourself, ‘How do I feel today? How can makeup support that feeling or push that feeling?’ If you’re feeling a little fragile and you have a big meeting that day, maybe wearing a red lipstick will make you feel powerful and provide protection. Or, if you’re feeling very inspired and you want to really tap into that, maybe you’ll go for metallic eyeshadow.

Makeup should never be used to ‘better’ who you already are. It should be about celebrating yourself. I always say to people: When you’re cleaning your teeth in the morning, putting on your skincare and brushing your hair, please believe that you are a god or goddess and really feel it. Your beauty routine then becomes this amazing tool for your mental health, instead of something you use to ‘fix’ yourself.

Before you swipe on your new hue, prep your lips by gently exfoliating and moisturizing. Let the balm absorb in and then perfect your pout. When it comes to technique, the options are endless — define your shape or create contrast with lip liner; layer colours to get the perfect shade; or add some gloss on top of your freshly stained, dry lips.

Everyone wants to look like a sun-kissed glazed donut these days (thank you, Hailey Bieber!), and it’s not hard to see why. Summer has always meant dewy skin and barely-there makeup. But the 2022 edition of the perennial trend has seen an old beauty technique popularized via TikTok: sunburn blush.

The best part is that you don’t actually have to get a sunburn to achieve the look (so don’t ditch your SPF and brimmed hats just yet). By applying a heavy dose of blush in a “W” shape over the cheeks, nose and temples, the skin looks instantly revitalized. It allows you to recreate the ultimate summer glow, as though you’ve spent the day out in the sun and just rolled up to your evening plans looking perfectly flushed.

The meaning behind makeup has continued to expand as the beauty space has taken off over the last decade. Many turn to it to bring out their natural features, others use it as a tool to make a powerful statement, and some express their identity through its colours and textures. Whichever way you choose, it’s a transformative medium and every June, as we celebrate love, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community breathe life into this form of storytelling.

This year, Canada’s very own iconic beauty destination, Shoppers Drug Mart, is encouraging Canadians everywhere to “Get loud for Pride!” with the launch of their limited-edition Quo Beauty Pride Collection, with a portion of proceeds supporting Pflag Canada—a local organization committed to helping Canadians navigate their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. With a new assortment of Pride-inspired makeup and accessories—from vibrant eye, lip and nail colours to rainbow-themed makeup brushes, lashes, jewelry and accessories—the 2022 Pride lineup is one of Quo Beauty’s biggest and boldest collections. The cherry on top? The entire collection comes with minimal packaging and is vegan, cruelty-free and PETA-certified.

What better way to up the glam factor than a partnership with Canadian drag icon and TV star, Icesis Couture?

“Bright, vibrant colours are essential for creating fabulous Pride looks. This year, I’m turning to my new favourite eyeliners and eyeshadows from the Quo Beauty Pride Collection,” says Icesis. “Pride Month is a great time to think outside the makeup bag and use beauty products more creatively, like experimenting with liquid liners to create bold graphic looks.”

Inspired, yet? Whether you want to recreate Icesis’ look or come up with your own, we sat with Shoppers Beauty Pro, Dee Sikora, to get the tea on this collection and how you can slay your way through Pride this year.

Quo Beauty Love Is Love Eyeshadow Palette

This must-have eye palette delivers rich pigments and a vibrant range of 12 colours that will leave you beaming with pride. “This is a great palette for artful experimentation and offers easy ways to add a pop of colour for someone who’s just starting to play with makeup,” shares Dee.

Quo Beauty Heart Liquid Liner

With a fine felt tip and steady flow of bright and colourful liners, you can truly wing it your way and explore colour as a form of self-expression through unconventional looks with the Quo Beauty Heart Liquid Liners. Hot tip from Dee: “Try pairing your eyeshadow with a contrasting eyeliner. For bolder looks, apply multiple shades of liquid eyeliner and connect the lines to create extended or layered wing effects.”

Quo Beauty Liquid Lipstick

A full-coverage, transfer-free matte liquid lipstick is key for an alluring pout this season, and this lipstick range is an easy way to add instant bursts of colour to your lips and even your face. “Pair your favourite shades to create an ombre lip effect,” shares Dee. “And you can take your kissable look on the go by simply popping one or more of these into your purse, fanny pack or pocket for on-the-go touch-ups.”

Quo Beauty Paint My Pride Brush Set

Cruelty-free and made with 100 per cent synthetic fibres, this set gives you five essential brushes that offer high-performance application. Perfect for anyone, Dee shares that “Quo Beauty brushes are affordable and accessible with quality that professionals enjoy, but also easy for a beginner to use.”

Quo Beauty Flash Dry Nail Polish

Whether you’re rushing off to a Pride party or if you just don’t have the patience to sit through all the drying stages that come with an extensive nail art look, quick-drying polish is the people’s champ. Dee shares that this range of polishes is “another easy way to express yourself by creating colourful nail looks.” They suggest starting with a solid or clear base and then getting “loud by adding multi-coloured dots or painting each tip a different colour.”

Explore the limited-edition Quo Beauty Pride Collection in stores and online at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix now until supplies last.

The Spring/Summer 2022 runways saw no shortage of minimalist makeup.

Fashion houses from Alaïa to Bottega Veneta paraded supermodels with cheeks blushed as if pinched, faces slicked with dew, and brows enviably brushed up to feathered perfection.

For Toronto-based makeup artist Robert Weir, minimalism in makeup is a “less is more” approach to beauty. “Minimal can mean either focusing on one feature at a time or doing makeup so subtle that your natural features become the statement.”

Still, the term minimal is not to be taken too literally — as even these laid back looks require some effort. Below, Weir talks to FASHION about how you can recreate these model-inspired minimalist beauty trends for the spring season like a pro.

Flawless face

At Collina Strada and Alaïa, models embodied the “no makeup” look with skin so flawless it appeared au naturel. To achieve the same barely-there finish, Weir suggests reaching for a tinted moisturizer, BB cream, or CC Cream. “With moisturizer as the base, it gives a moist look while the sheerness of it allows the natural glow of your skin to come through the makeup.” Apply this lightly all over the face, and finish with concealer only in areas that require extra coverage. For application, opt for brushes or fingertips over sponges as they may absorb too much of your makeup.

The wet and dewy look

Channelling springtime dew, the wet look caught our eye at Bottega Veneta and Jacquemus. For this trend, Weir prefers using a cream highlighting product to create a slick finish on the high points of the face such as the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, under the brow bone and the cupid’s bow. Keeping it real, he also reminds us that this glass-like look is not the reality for those with more textured skin. “If you’re battling acne, scarring, rosacea and things like that, the dewy look can sometimes accentuate the texture more, so it’s a luxury for some people to naturally have skin that can pull off that really dewy look.” With your skin’s texture in mind, you may be more selective with your product placement — but anyone can do it.

Pinch me baby blush

As per the trends seen on Altuzarra and Brandon Maxwell runways, a neutral swipe of blush over the apples of the cheeks adds warmth to any minimalist beauty look. “I love cream products for this because they tend to melt into the skin and lightly fade throughout the day,” says Weir. Rare Beauty’s Stay Vulnerable Melting Cream Blush comes highly recommended by Weir in five natural looking shades from pink to berry for all skin tones. “I’m a melanated man and I work on a lot of beautiful melanated women — don’t be afraid of blush just because you’re dark,” says Weir. “It’s for all of us.”

Born this way brows

Throughout the years, the shape of eyebrows have fluctuated between ’90s thin to bushy and everything in between. For Giambattista Valli and Isabel Marant, Spring/Summer brows are brushed and low-effort looking. To mimic this look, begin by brushing your brows up. Weir’s personal brow hack involves using got2b Glued hair gel. “It’ll hold down a lace front wig so you know your eyebrows are good,” he says with a laugh.  Using a clean spoolie brush, apply this gel to set your brows in place. Got thinner brows? Fear not. Weir assures us that these fuller brows are still within reach. “I like to use a brow pen as opposed to powder or a pencil and take some time to draw hair by hair to fill in the gaps and it still looks super natural.”

Ultra glossy lip love

We’re taking cues from Victoria Beckham and Blumarine as we declare glossy lips are in — thank you Y2K revival! The preparation for this high-gloss lip begins with hydration. “Usually when I’m doing full glam on someone the first thing that I apply is a lip mask so that it can start soaking in while I do the rest of the makeup,” states Weir. The rest, he says, is simple. “Even in a dimly lit room if you have a clear gloss on it’s going to reflect everything around you,” says Weir. “It’s a way to add drama without adding colour.”

Essentially, minimalist beauty trends are all about enhancing your natural self.“There’s something about a minimal makeup look that exudes confidence” says Weir. “It looks cool because the person is owning who they are.”

It’s that funny time of year when we’re previewing Fall/Winter beauty trends while still dreaming about the looks we’ll (hopefully) soon serve up for spring. Enter the March 2022 beauty launches. What better way to rev up our imaginations than with an entirely new beauty collection from a dynamic avant-garde designer, or a meditation session in the new must-have sauna blanket? When practicality calls, prepping your skin by targeting end-of-season breakouts, parched lips and an uneven skintone will have you looking fresh-as-a-daisy and ready to take on the world one moderately-temped day at a time.

Enigmatic Belgian designer Dries Van Noten is bringing his unique POV to your beauty routine. Inspired by his “impossible combinations” of colour and print, the collection of makeup and fragrance is sure the make the hearts of his fans sing. Described by Dries as  “playing creative ping-pong,” in reference to his collaboration with various makeup artists and perfumers, the first drop features 10 refillable eaux de parfums, including scents such as Neon Garden — inspired by Dries’s own garden and featuring an unexpectedly offbeat combo of mint, orris, lavender and carrot seed — and Voodoo Chile, containing notes of rosemary, patchouli and balsam. There are also 30 lipsticks, available in four eye-catching, refillable cases, scented soaps and hand creams, as well as other inspired accessories, including beautiful leather pouches, a comb and eyeshadow brush, which are all packaged to-go in the boutique in patterned drawstring pouches.

This buzzy best-selling infrared sauna blanket is now shipping to Canada and is also available exclusively at Holt Renfrew. Said to be a game-changer for better sleep, post-workout recovery, increased energy, anti-aging and immune system support, the luxe blanket has been racking up celeb fans, including wellness-lovers Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker.

YSL Black Opium Illicit Green Eau de Parfum

When Black Opium first launched in 2014 with its signature floral-coffee twist on the famous original, it was an instant hit. Addictive in its clash of strong notes such as white flowers, black coffee and gourmand vanilla, the juice is now being reinvented once more. The new YSL Black Opium Illicit Green parfum is predictably still quite bold, but is a fresh take with notes of sparkling green mandarin, crisp fig leaf and an accord of creamy fig fruit.

Noble Panacea The Exceptional Chronobiology Sleep Mask

We’ve all been told that getting a solid night of sleep is the secret to keeping everything from our mind to our weight in check. Now, Noble Panacea, founded by British-American scientist Sir Fraser Stoddart (who won the Noble Prize in 2016 for his lifetime contributions to organic chemistry), is taking a deeper dive into how we can optimize our skin’s nightly DNA repair and recovery in sync with our circadian rhythms. The brand’s new overnight mask contains a series of potent and sophisticated actives, such as exfoliating polyhydroxy acid, retinol, peptides and two weights of hyaluronic acid (to reach different levels of skin), each of which are programmed to release in sequence so that it works with your skin’s overnight phases of detox, repair and regeneration. The treatments, packaged in a reusable plastic-free box made with renewable starch, come complete with an applicator and a Xiuyan white jade gua sha — the perfect bedtime routine for reaching the ultimate dream state.

Designed for all skin types, including those that are very sensitive, this new foaming cleanser from Dior contains over 90 per cent naturally-derived ingredients, including detoxifying water lily extract, which is sourced from the house’s new Latour-Marliac garden. Inspired by having to gently and effectively remove makeup backstage during fashion week, the creamy foam also targets impurities from pollution, while maintaining the skin’s pH and moisture barrier.

Avène Cleanance Comedomed

Everyone knows that the best time to target a breakout is as soon as you feel that painful pressure brewing below your skin’s surface. Avène’s new drying emulsion was made for getting ahead of a pesky spot (or many) and limiting its havoc to just one day. The spot treatment was developed with the brand’s trademark thermal mineral spring water sourced from the south of France, along with Comedoclastin, an active ingredient which limits the development of microcomedones, and retinaldehyde, a vitamin A derivative widely used by derms for treating acne-prone skin. Simply dab it on where needed and wait for the magic to happen.

Buxom Power-full Lip Scrub and Balm

Just in time to makeover those dry and flaky lips for spring, Buxom has released their newest luscious lip scrub and balm duo. The mess-free sweet guava lip scrub gently exfoliates with sugar while also leaving behind nourished lips thanks to tomato seed oil and vitamins c and e. For an extra-pillowy pout, the First Crush tinted lip balm contains peptides for a gentle plumping action and imparts an effortlessly flattering hue that’s customized to your lip’s natural pH level.

Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Primer

It’s official: Makeup is back. We’ve kept our routines to a minimum for the past couple of years in favour of focusing on more mask-friendly skincare, but this season’s looks are all about playing in our cosmetics bags again. You may have forgotten that primers even exist, but the new Hourglass formula will remind you why you fell in love with them in the first place. A refreshing gel that’s as light as a feather, the formula contains innovative micro-spherical powders which absorb oil to control shine, smooth skin texture and blur fine lines and imperfections, all while extending the wear of your fearless new looks.

In a surprise move, one of the most noteworthy beauty lessons to come out of London Fashion Week Fall 2022 was that you may not have to worry about styling your hair at all next season. The prolific parade of headwear that was seen in all forms on the runways, from jovial extra-wide brimmed hats to moody hoods and balaclavas, practically guaranteed that bad hair days need not be feared any longer. Those not yet ready to cover their coif à la Richard Quinn, Ahluwalia and Erdem can dip their toes into the accessory waters with a headband, as seen at Eudon Choi and Roksanda.

If it’s your makeup brushes you’re ready to take a break from, bare faces continued to be the trend du jour at shows including Christopher Kane, David Koma and Nensi Dojaka. But on the other end of the spectrum, a beauty rebellion of sorts was brewing, including a bevy of ’90s-era punk rock looks complete with generously applied black eye liner and spiky devil-may-care updos.

While Aadnevik and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi may tempt you to unearth your volumizing mousse and texturizing pomade, you can still play nice with your standby eyeliner pencils and pens thanks to Bora Aksu, Molly Goddard and Eudon Choi. To mix it up a little, there was still lots of the party-ready embellishment we previewed in New York, with a spectrum of colour (Mark Fast), crystals (Simone Rocha, The Blonds and Paul Costelloe) and a dynamic focus on the lower lash line, such as the graphic looks spotted at Ozwald Boatang and Roksanda.

Finally, if it’s a smooth-as-silk blowout you prefer to pair with your smoky eye (à la Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface) look no further than the throwback looks spotted at Halpern and 16Arlington, who along with Bora Aksu, proved that middle part supremacy rages on.

Inspired by a Monet-like garden filled with shimmering water and lush blooms, these three new limited edition lipsticks from Hermès are meant to bring a little light to your makeup routine. Acting like watercolours, the formulas look bright but go on with a glossy, transparent finish in shades of peach, orange and pink. The three limited edition tubes designed by Pierre Hardy (who is also the mastermind behind the brand’s shoe and jewellery collections) come packaged in the brand’s trademark orange box and can be refilled with existing lipstick hues (or new ones to come.)

Klorane introduces sustainable shampoo bars

Klorane Shampoo Bar

French pharmacy favourite Klorane is extending its best-selling mango butter and oat milk shampoo range, which are both ideal for dry hair, to include more sustainable bar formulas. Free of silicone, sulfate-surfactants (the ingredient that creates lots of lather and bubbles but can be extremely harsh on the skin and hair), the bars hold up the same effective formulas as the originals, but without the excess packaging. Both are great for adding hydration to lacklustre locks, but the Ultra-Gentle formula with oat milk works wonders to treat a dry scalp for softer, shinier hair.

A luxe new balm from Guerlain perfect for slugging

Guerlain Cica Honey Balm

Guerlain’s new Abeille Royale Intense Repair Youth Oil-in-Balm is the most luxurious answer possible to your new slugging routine. Its combo of cica and beeswax butter effectively protect your skin’s moisture barrier and lock in water molecules while you sleep or brave the elements (or indoor heating.) It contains 95 per cent naturally-derived ingredients, including sustainably-sourced,  concentrated blackbee honey from Ouessant Island (the scent is incredible), an island off the coast of Brittany, which functions as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is recognized as a uniquely pollution- and pesticide-free environment.

Oribe’s new haircare line for battered strands

Oribe Hair Alchemy Shampoo

Plagued by weak, broken strands from colouring, heat styling, or just intense daily styling? Enter, Oribe’s new Hair Alchemy collection. Made with a unique combo of plant proteins, bio-fermented bamboo leaf, green tea, hyaluronic acid and chia seeds, the formulas claim to penetrate the hair shaft to help strengthen your hair from the inside out. It also works to protect brittle ends (between trims!) and build elasticity to prevent further breakage. Now, if only there was a support group for flat iron addiction.

Shea Moisture improves its popular shea butter line

Fans of Shea Moisture’s much-loved shea butter lineup can now look forward to their hair lapping up more effective hydration (and it often needs as much as it can get this time of year) thanks to the whole range being re-vamped with a more effective combo of moisturizing ingredients, along with its namesake organic raw shea butter. To extend your sleeker and more conditioned results between washes, the brand is also dropping a new leave-in which smoothes your strands and keeps frizz at bay for longer, so you can keep drying shampoos to a minimum.

It was a simpler time in 2010. Sure, we had swine flu, but the concept of a pandemic like COVID-19 would have seemed like a far fetched reality. And besides, some of us had twee looks to recreate and Tumblr blogs to run. In this pre-Vine era, “Tik Tok” was the name of your favourite Kesha song — not a social media app. Over a decade later (yes, 2010 was 12 years ago), we’ve waved goodbye to skinny jeans and side parts and traded in Gossip Girl for Euphoria.

A decidedly darker take on the lives of high school students, the HBO series is back for its highly anticipated second season. Set at a Project X-level house party, the Euphoria girls return to their fullest forms, bringing fashionable chaos to every scene. But as we follow Rue and the students of East Highland High, we can’t help but trace the show’s makeup legacy back to the 2010s.

In season one, audiences were swooned by the use of chunky glitter and neon liner. The show’s influence on makeup art is undeniable, forever inspiring creators’ takes on rhinestone-adorned lids and sparkling under eyes. And though Euphoria brought the glitter tears aesthetic into mainstream consciousness in recent years, the trend was openly embraced by 2010s music legend Kesha.

A decade ago, the star’s influence on the pop-music scene could not be overstated. After her debut single “Tik Tok” had commercial success in 2010, Kesha remained a staple in the pop culture zeitgeist for years to come.

During her years of mainstream fame, Kesha embraced an aesthetic of glammed-up messiness. Enter glitter tears. The singer was known to sport smeared sparkles at every performance, public event and red carpet she graced. The 2010s grungy glitter era was short-lived, but thanks to Euphoria and other 2010s trend revivals, it’s coming back.

With the return of 2014 Tumblr era fashion and the widespread embrace of maximalist personal style, adventurous makeup looks are having the chance to shine (pun intended). TikTok trend forecaster @thedigifairy predicts that the “sleep-deprived glitter eyes” trend will be making a comeback this year.

After popularizing the glitter eye makeup aesthetic in 2019, Euphoria set a precedent for over-the-top eyeshadow and eyeliner. But in season two, we’re seeing a reimagined take on the stylized makeup that the dark fantasy series has become known for.

Barbie Ferreira

In an interview for FASHION’s March 2022 issue, Euphoria makeup designer Doniella Davy shared that this season, the girls’ makeup will be decidedly more toned down and mature.

“I’m still working with a lot of reflective textures,” she said. “It’s about swapping out brights and big pieces of glitter for more refined colours and textures. Of course, I still snuck in one or two neon moments for fun.”

While season one gave us ethereal-style makeup with bright colours and free-flowing glitter tears, it’s clear season two is intentionally more polished to reflect the characters’ development. In episode one, for instance, Maddy (Alexa Demie) sports an ultra-sharp eyeliner look that mirrors her badass (admittedly terrifying) personality.

While the refined looks from the second season of Euphoria are bound to inspire more makeup trends, it seems grungy glitter tears are here to stay. And TBH, I’m not mad at the idea of using sparkles to cover my dark circles.
